I watched this years ago and now that I've got a 2 car garage shop I used this style without thinking where I saw it. Plywood with tool holders screwed into it, no cleat system or peg board baloney... and now my projects get done so fast cause I'm never looking for a tool. They're all within reach and I couldn't be happier. Thanks for producing these videos over the years. You've helped me more than I can put into words.
I think your tool holders are some of your most beautiful work actually. The way you arrange them on the wall is very pleasing to the eye as well. It's all so perfectly ordered. For someone who is borderline obsessive about organization, this is pure art.
Matthias Wandel Great job, Matthias! I want to do the same thing in my garage (that's my "workshop" too). I've just repaired the wall in which I want to hang the tools, and I already have the plywood sheet to fix to the wall to make something like this. It sure looks very nice, but I do think those holders take a lot of work indeed!
Looks good! I use a slanted plane till because I have quite a few more hand planes (though your way has no limit I suppose), but a very similar setup for my other tools. I love what you said about not doing it all at once. Yes! Not only time consuming, but it seems like I need to live with my setup to know exactly what I want.
As a woodworker there is something about custom making holders for your tools. You are making something that is utilitarian but you can make it as minimal or elaborate as you like. Its very rewarding working "on" the shop and not just "in" the shop.
Christopher Demetrick Well, I’m a fairly busy woodworker (woodworking & other activities), so I just don’t have the time for that. I use a pegboard system. Tools can be added in mere seconds and whole areas rearranged to accommodate in minutes. My creativity is reserved for what is done with those tools.
Thank you so much Matthias! I'm learning alot from your wallhanging video. Learned more about my bandsaw having a push guide that i didn't think it had, which enabled me to setup my new blade better than i've been doing it, and how to put a bevel on a small board when my blade tilts to the left instead of the right LOL. This is a great video for us beginners. Much appreciated....really enjoy your channel !!!
As always, beautifully produced video. Inspired me to do the same with a 12mm plywood sheet screwed to the gyprock wall - through to the studs. Pleasantly surprised to see pocket-hole jig used on one of the shelves. Great work, Matthias.
Loved this! Thank you for sharing. Was good to watch as you shared your rationale for the design. I found it elegant and inspiring as I prepare to revamp my workspace. Thanks again!
That plane holder is a great idea and seems like it would be a bit more fun to make then just a regular slope and stop. I want to make a hand tool cabinet at some stage to get all my stuff out from under the bench and dust and I think I'll do something similar. Thanks.
Super cool. I always wanted to make such wall too where all my tools are easy available hanging. Not yet made. But with this video gives me motivation to finally start on it aswell. But good that you made an example because the thinking about it made me not doing it. And I see now what I would do different / better. I think I'm going to hang the heavy tools at the button of the wall... And the lighter ones like screw drivers and drills.. more in the middle..
Good job on these much needed tool holders, going to seal a few of your ideas, and get some of my tools up too. keep up the good work & thanks for posting..
Very nice video. My ever lasting problem is to find my (electronics) tools in my own mess. So this weekend I'm going to design tool holders. Thanks for a very inspiring video.
Great, but those plane holders should be lined with natural-fiber velvet to prevent blade damage. Also, a climate controlled box can limit exposure to moisture and harmful UV radiation, which both hasten primary planar degradation and quantum-warping of the sole.
pocket83 I keep my wood planes in 3M Fluorinert engineered liquid. It is specially designed to be chemically stable (so the blade won't corrode) and thermally conductive (to keep heat out of the blade to prevent warping due to thermal fatigue). It's designed to cool electronics, but at around 250$ per gallon, it is totally worth it to protect those precious, delicate tools!
Those are all great individual projects but those hand plane holders are a true work of art lol :) i was shocked when you ran them through the table saw but they look great :) It's fun to see how your big garage workshop is coming along thanks, Peter
These are great tool holders, but use caution on using them in a southern climate where humidity is much higher. I made similar holders years ago (not as nice though) and within months my tools developed rusty areas where they were in contact with the wood. I'm not sure if you could seal the wood perhaps to keep moisture problems at bay.
I'm getting older - put the heavier stuff down low, the lighter tools higher up. Is easier to put and retrieve, also less damage if something falls, and from engineering; the higher something the greater the force or strain on the back boards.
The downward force is the same as the wueight of the object, which will only change by an incredibly small, negligable even to most science experiments amount with height
Hi Matthias, I agree with you. French Cleat walls look nice but they do not give any more functionality than your wall with tool holders and screws. My garage is the envy of many of my neighbors but I do not use French cleats. I like having tool outlines so a quick visual tells me that something is missing. If I spend 15 minutes looking for a tool I have lost 15 minutes of my life--I cannot get those 15 minutes back. I use long torx screws for most of my stuff--plus cabinet grade 3/4" plywood. My tools are on 2' x 4' panels so I can move them to the next garage and get set up quickly. Time is something I don't have a lot of. I used to have the same drill press as you, but then I burned it up once when I used a 1200W inverter to power it (an experiment). Keep up the good work, Matthias!
So glad I found your videos, exactly what I've been looking for as I've taken the plunge to completely redo my workshop organization along these same lines. I know it'll take awhile but I've already hung up the oak plywood and am ready to get started. Keep those videos coming, thanks.
I just knew that large plane would snap those elegant rails. I should have known Matthias would think of that also and compensate with the screw stops.
I saw lots of videos about tool organizer and I can say this is one of the best Why is the best because all the wood he use its just a scrap wood not like others go buy a sheet of wood thats easy to work but can you make something from pieces of wood or wood that you dont need thank you for the video
Thanks Mathias I must say I love all your ideas but those plane holders are awesome I have to make myself a couple...... Great idea ...Thanks for sharing... Albert
Hey 6 years later this is still one of the best clear, thorough, and well explained videos. Thanks!

More tool holders in my big workshop. Got the essentials hung now, but I'm sure I'll make more with time.
Matthias Wandel i love how tidy you are with all tour tools
Matthias Wandel Great job, Matthias! I want to do the same thing in my garage (that's my "workshop" too). Love the plane blocks.. smart to think off a blade recess Matthias Wandel !
Matthias Wandel Молодец !!!

I love what you said about not doing it all at once. Yes! Not only time consuming, but it seems like I need to live with my setup to know exactly what I want.
Quality work many thanks I'm not a carpenter and after 40 yrs as a mechanic I enjoy working with wood great tips
Hey, Matthias, thank you for putting subtitles on your videos, it makes them accessible for the hearing impaired. Thank you!
Custom holders, affixed as-needed to a plywood wall. No rails or cleats to limit options in positioning. So simple. So versatile.
As a woodworker there is something about custom making holders for your tools. You are making something that is utilitarian but you can make it as minimal or elaborate as you like. Its very rewarding working "on" the shop and not just "in" the shop.
Sometimes I feel like persons like Matthias (and myself on a smaller scale) ONLY really make things "for" the shop. It's just too fun.
I love those plane holders, especially the "tiny" finishing touches.
Very Inspiring. I stay in a Condo(Apartment) with limited space and love tools. you inspired me to make something of my own. Thanks Matthias.
Thank you Matthias for being so inspirational.
Seen many a woodworking videos but this man is the most intelligent and smartest of the lot..
Tool boards make the day go a lot better ! Nice job on the plane holder. I was glad I got to talk with you on the Nicks live feed show .
Great work Matthias. You don't miss one detail. I'm always checkin to see your latest gizmos. From a dedicated viewer, more vids!
Matthias you are better than watching TV. Thanks.
Thanks for giving me some ideas for filling the remaining space on my wall of tools. I especially like the holders for your planes.
One of my favorite videos. Bored of yet another fence or sled.
my dude never misses with his helpful hints smh. excellent video.

another great video. love watching you come up with little tricks for the different tools.
Sliding the planes into those holders was so satisfying to watch😮👾 love your work bro
Again much appreciated. Great mind, creativity and patience. I was inspired again. Thank you mr Wandel!
Brilliant solution for keeping that hammer from falling off of the tool holder!
That plane holder is a great idea and seems like it would be a bit more fun to make then just a regular slope and stop. I want to make a hand tool cabinet at some stage to get all my stuff out from under the bench and dust and I think I'll do something similar. Thanks.
How many good ideas can you fit into one video?! About this many!
So many cool ideas in this video, it's hard to pick out just one. Thanks, Matthias!
Really nice ideas. The improv levelling idea made me smile. Your big workshop is looking great
Super cool. I always wanted to make such wall too where all my tools are easy available hanging. Not yet made. But with this video gives me motivation to finally start on it aswell.

My favorite CZcams craftsman!
Some great engineering, and now I see what you mean about trying not to build them all at once. I'm burnt out after 3!
Wow, this video is loaded with great storage/organization ideas, thanks for the video!
Can't wait to use some of these tool holders in my new shop. Great work Matthias!
Good job on these much needed tool holders, going to seal a few of your ideas, and get some of my tools up too.
keep up the good work & thanks for posting..
You are very professional. I really appreciate it your time and sharing to us .
it seems like you have the best ideas for mounting tools
I like the plane holder, gonna borrow that idea for my new wall storage
Gosh, you really made it look so nice. Thanks again
So many good ideas in this video. Thanks for making these videos. You are awesome.
Mi familia y yo te abrazamos con respeto y gracias, muchas gracias por compartir tu talento... Desde México ciudad, familia Pérez Gómez
Very nice video.
My ever lasting problem is to find my (electronics) tools in my own mess. So this weekend I'm going to design tool holders.
Thanks for a very inspiring video.
Amazing amount of tips, in these 2 videos. I really appreciate you sharing, saves me a ton of time.
A lot of great tricks and tips in these holders, thanks.
Great, but those plane holders should be lined with natural-fiber velvet to prevent blade damage. Also, a climate controlled box can limit exposure to moisture and harmful UV radiation, which both hasten primary planar degradation and quantum-warping of the sole.
Also consider displacing the oxygen with an inert gas, or simply pulling a constant vacuum in the box. :-D

Azure Flash That's true. If the internet has taught me anything it's that handplanes are more valuable than children.
Azure Flash Right. Keep the planes safe in a seald box, and if you need to smooth something, just grab the belt sander :)
Doug Reed Have you considered the effects such fluid would have on the internal grammeters of the planes turbo encabulator?
Nice job on the plane holders. I like the design.
Those are all great individual projects but those hand plane holders are a true work of art lol :) i was shocked when you ran them through the table saw but they look great :) It's fun to see how your big garage workshop is coming along
thanks,
Peter
Always be Knolling!! Love the look of that wall!
I love the way your mind works!
exactly the kind of setup ideas i was looking for. no pegboard... tyvm!!!
Nicely done! I love well organized work places.
Always love your videos. The tool wall is coming along nicely.
I can’t do most of this...but I can appreciate it that you can.
Great job Matthias, the tool rack is starting to look really good, cheers Harry

However, the torque on the wall about its axis along the floor is much greater if the heavy tools are mounted higher.

I like what you done with the place. Nice Job.
Love your channel, you are so precise on everything you do 👍

Nice. Now you've got me wanting to play with making more tool holders :)
Very well thought out and looks like they will work nicely.
This guy is a super genius.
I'm doing my wall right now. Sadly I don;t have a ban saw yet and only 1 plane to go on my wall. hahaha! But I love your idea! Im gonna use it.
buen trabajo. No hay como tener todo en su lugar y se ve mejor el taller donde uno se desempeña a diario. saludos Matthias desde chile.
beautiful execution on all these.
So glad I found your videos, exactly what I've been looking for as I've taken the plunge to completely redo my workshop organization along these same lines. I know it'll take awhile but I've already hung up the oak plywood and am ready to get started. Keep those videos coming, thanks.
Gracias por tus videos, no me canso de ver las maravillas que haces
Some Good Ideas. I noticed you had a problem with the plastic head of your clamps breaking too...I never thought to re-make that part out of wood.
Great work! Very impressed.
Helpful little tips re keeping tools on their pegs.🇬🇧
Beautiful bit of work
Clever solutions for storage issues.
Informative and inspiring, comfortable length videos. Thanks
I especially like the plane holders
I just knew that large plane would snap those elegant rails. I should have known Matthias would think of that also and compensate with the screw stops.
Awesome video, I'm making all of these holders ASAP
I saw lots of videos about tool organizer and I can say this is one of the best

My favorite kind of projects!
You think of everything.
You can make cutting a piece of wood interesting.
Many great tips! Thanks Matthias.
Nice... Im glad i found this video, i needed ideas like this. Thanks
Well You Know: I' m just a dreaming fan of Yours , because I enjoy seeing Your videos and Woods playing like that
Best Regards
amazing! creative and i really enjoyed learning new tricks!
I guess this is Sunday sorted out. Thanks for the video.😊
Great use for 3D printer for tool holders!
I love those hand plane holders
I love watching your videos ive watched them all probably twice haha
Great job! Makes all my tool holders look like left over dry wall screws...
I hang my handplanes by their front tote. I use a long 12mm wooden dowel and hang them on it. Fast and easy.
Thanks mate you've given me some good ideas.
Gracias por compartir tu trabajo, saludos desde Argentina.
Thanks Mathias I must say I love all your ideas but those plane holders are awesome I have to make myself a couple...... Great idea ...Thanks for sharing...
Albert
Very enjoyable to watch.
Amazing!
You're very crafty :)
Simple but great things. Good work.
Love the plane rails, I was wondering how to make holders for all my dad's old planes.
But....if the mallet is trying to fall off of the ledge, what are you using to cause all that banging?
a hammer
I was joking. Guess my jokes are so bad they don't translate well :)
Great ideals, I am building a new workshop and lots of useful information. Thanks
The sawstop joke was hilarious
