- The New Tetris is a puzzle video game for the Nintendo 64. The game was developed by H2O Entertainment and published by Nintendo, based on the latter's popular Tetris series. The game was originally released on July 31, 1999, in North America.
The game is notable for showing scenic fly-bys of famous structures (for examples the Sphinx, the Pantheon, Saint Basil's Cathedral, a Mayan temple, and others) rendered in realtime. This is relatively difficult for the Nintendo 64 hardware to accomplish at the quality that is achieved. The New Tetris also features a multiplayer mode with up to four players and an ethnically themed electronic dance music soundtrack by Neil Voss, who also composed the award-winning music for Tetrisphere.
Fun fact: The team who worked on this game HATED it. Some even went as far as hiding lengthy rants in the code about how useless the main producer for it was.

try Tetris Effect. Same idea of audio-visual meditation based on Tetris gameplay, but more modern.

The problem is that if you want to release a tetris game today you need permission of the tetris company that is the one responsable to give authorization of a tetris game and you must follow their guidelines. It is very hard to have a different set of tetris game after 2001 because of it. That's why Tetris Connect had hard time getting classic mode into their game.
I would kill it if Nintendo added this and the original NES version on the Switch Online service

I know it's Tetris, but the visuals of this game are still really impressive for the N64. The lighting on the blocks in particular looks like a GameCube game

i think it's almost the same as original tetris. the different is that this allows you to aim for high score by constructing and clearing square (4x4) blocks. There are two kinds of square: silver and gold. Gold is the most valuable and will reward you the most points. i think this concept is a very good twist to the original although I'm not an expert.
this is definitely not 70s porn music lol, also this game added a really fun mechanic to it - creating a big cube out of small pieces to get more points.
If you made a big cube out of varied pieces it would turn silver, if you made it out of all the same types of piece it would turn gold.
You could do a lot of different combinations to make the big cubes and it introduced a really interesting strategy/mechanic. I loved this game.
Just realized though the person playing it in this video isn't making the big silver and gold cubes so check out another vid if u want to see that mechanic in play
The original “Tetris 99.”
Hopefully this gets added to NSO. It's definitely not like it would harm sales of Tetris 99 or Effect because GB Tetris is already on NSO

I'll take the SNES Tetris Attack over this. In my opinion, that's the best Tetris. Although, it's quite a bit different to traditional tetris.

It’s not Tetris, they just put Tetris in the name so it can sell better, and threw in yoshi there. The game is called panel de pon in Japan and the series is known as puzzle league here. Although I like all those games, I still prefer Tetris, puyo puyo and even dr Mario over it
nothing wrong with paying homage to the original, but trust, this version was an absolute gem. Never been in such a trance playing a video game ever as I was in this game. This video doesn't showcase the big silver and gold cubes mechanic which was just such a perfect extension of tetris logic. Making the big blocks, the sound of the music and the sound of the blocks and how it falls into rhythm, it was perfect.
And no hard feelings offenses!
I would prefer the Tetris NES 1985, and the Tetris Worlds GameCube 2003 towards this!
But if I had a n64 only and couldn't afford any other classic games consoles if I was able to be patient saving money for! I would just try to find this new Tetris n64!
I just relized that the new Tetris didn't make a cut release in Japan , there only released outside of North America and Pal Regions.
This was the only game that both my parents would play.

Definitely. The game has you clear lines to build monuments or “wonders” creating some major replay value
Favorite Tetris, But why it was called New was because it reinvented the game ? :P
