I was six or seven. We lived on Waterhill Street in Lynn Massachusetts. It was the second floor and there was a crawl space that led to an attic. I climbed up there and found a record player and some records. I remember Frankenstein, an instrumental, the ojays, waterloo by Abba, Another Saturday night by Cat Stevens. There was, Going to the Chapel, and then there was this song. I came from a broken family. This song stood out to me. I longed for a father figure that was sincere. Unfortunately, I never experienced that. However, the experience alone in that hot attic with those single records, and that record player, was like entering a spiritual realm with God himself for me. I love this song.
Ever since I can remember, my grandfather would play this in his garage while he stood there drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette, tapping and bouncing to the beat. He had a way of comforting all of those around him. He had a free yet grounded spirit. My love for him will persist throughout my life, and I'm happy for all of the great memories he gave me. Can't wait to see him again.
This reminds me of my step daddy and the love he had for my Mom. He loved her to pieces and would do anything for her. He died of lung cancer and she passed many years later when she was 80 in 2021 after the isolation pandemic by herself in assisted living from the horrific illness of dementia. She was my very best friend. I am happy knowing my loved ones are whole again and my belief is that I will be reunited again! Heaven is real and better than your human mind can understand. My step father was the man in this song❤.
I am so sorry, I just cannot imagine a Mother not wanting her child. My heart goes out to you. I lost a child when he was three, it just about killed me. Sending you a huge hug from California.
I live in a Small Town...I mean Small! I swear when I go into the little Grocery Store they purposely play Songs for me...tonight I was only in there for a few minutes...one of the few people there on a Sunday night...and this Song came on...They really do Care! ❤
Back when he played this song on the American Top 40, Casey Kasem told the listeners that Billy Swan had a couple of pet dogs that ran loose in the studio, and halfway through, the dogs were excitedly jumping up on some of the musicians, and some onlooker friends were clapping because the band managed to make it through the recording of the song ~
He probably just made it up, because those claps were actually dubbed in by the recording engineers to give the song a feeling of an in-studio party. The continuation of the instrumental was also included intentionally to pad the recording out since it was such a short song.
I was a freshman in high school when this song came out. It’s funny but I had a radio alarm in my bedroom and a lot of times this song woke me up. Such great memories!
Me too! Freshman AND the alarm haha. Roller skates to it alot as well. It was perfect for that because it was so fun and hard to sit still to. This brought back some fine memories!😉🛼 Have a great safe holiday🎄
Every morning when I wake up to go to elementary school, this song, Mary Hopkins " Those Were the Days Again, New Kid in Town by the Eagles would come on around the same time. Those were some good times.
This song just makes you feel good. Spreads good vibrations. Makes you wanna go out an kiss somebody just to make then smile an have a good day. Fun fact. Just found out two days ago. Billy Swan also wrote "Lover please" made famous by Clyde McPhatter.
I have been trying to remember the name Billy Swann and the title I can help for two years. Finally heard it on this radio station I listen to today. Such a great song.
@@bklyn2shoes After listening to both versions, I have to say that I do like the Billy Swan version best. Ringo's is cool, but I guess this is the original. Either way. Great song with a positive message.

This song has kind of a 50's feel to it which makes it all the more appealing.
Michael 4043. No. This has a 70s country feel.
I was 8 when it came out and every time it came on the radio I thought ot was an oldie.
What a great song with the rhythm and words.
Something about this song is just so sweet. Loved the song in 1974 and hadn't thought of it in a long while.

Such a great song that not even Elvis himself could better it.
To Craig. 817: I agree. Elvis wouldn't come close. It's the Swan's song -- only for him.
Love this song, was 15 years old in boarding school at the time. Youth, carefree, hanging with my buddies. Miss those days. ✌ ❤ 👋 🇦🇺
