I saw the Fantasmic show over in Japan almost ten years ago. I can't remember that much but one thing that stood out was the dialogue. I was there with my brother and our friend who is Japanese and she was laughing because she couldn't believe how dark it was with Ursola saying "I will kill Mickey Mouse. I will squeeze him until his head explodes." They didn't hold anything back.

Storytime: My family made plans for a Disneyland trip back in 92, and accidentally scheduled it for the opening weekend of Fantasmic. Mom likes to remind me that the traffic around the Rivers of America was a nightmare, as this was before they added the terraced walkways to act as a theater.
Years later, we were back when they finally switched from cherry picker Bucky to the magnificent animatronic dubbed Murphy. As luck would have it, we were there a year later for the performance where Murphy famously lost his head, and evil triumphed once more. We were seated by the Frontierland docks (disabled seating), and watched as the Mark Twain approached and the costumed cast members were talking to each other in shock. It was hilarious, especially since the lights and music cut when it started making it's round of the river.
So, 2012 comes by, and my mom hears about the special 20th anniversary show coming up and wanted to get the merchandise since we were annual passholders. We go to the store in Frontierland to get them, only to be told we had to go wait in a special line outside the park to get a pass to get them, which no cast member had ever mentioned in the day prior when my mom found out about the event. My mom was pissed, and began to recall the events that transpired, being there for the opening and for Murphy loosing his head. The cast member made a phone call, and we were able to walk out with 2 brand new t shirts.

Disney was a client of my Dad's and he did a lot of work for them including the water mist projections for Pirates of the Carribean (after Dead Man's Chest came out) and also did Madame Leota's face on her crystal ball (after Haunted Mansion premiered).
One of my favorite stories he had was while he worked during Fantasmic (wish I remembered the year) and got to see how the Maleficent dragon worked- those flames are produced by igniting DRY COFFEE CREAMER. So weird and cool! Also helped give the flames a more french vanilla scent than a charred woody one.

Steve Skorija, Bruce Healey, and Ken Whitcomb all worked on arrangements for the 2nd movement of IllumiNations. The new theme was composed and orchestrated by Bob Krogstad and the first and third movements were orchestral adaptations of the original Carnival/New World/Laserphonic arrangements that I did. The River Haunt was developed by myself and Adam Bezark following our work on IllumiNations at Epcot. Those are early storyboard drawings and you can see which elements made it into Fantasmic after further development.

A friend and I traveled to LA for a weekend to visit Magic Mountain and DL. It happened to be Mother's Day weekend, and we went to Magic Mountain on Saturday, and Disney on Sunday (Mother's Day). On Sunday, we were touring the park and walking toward the queue for Pirates when we saw cast members roping areas off and asked if there was going to be a parade. A cast member told us that there was going to be a sneak preview of a new show, and it would be amazing. She told us where to stand when we came back, and to keep an eye out for any crowds gathering so we could get in or near that good spot (bridge area of the walkway near Pirates). We made it, and what a show! I've seen the show many times since, but I'll never forget that first one! It was something very special to witness!

Funny story: Way before I became interested in Disneyland history and way before I set foot at Disneyland, a friend took her family there. This was the first year of Fantasmic, so family vacation slideshows were still a thing (I miss those!) She shows me her blurry 400 iso photos of Ursula and tells me that she RISES FROM THE WATER and moves around the RoA as this inflatable animatronic and then disappears back INTO the water and that's where they store her. I hate that I believed her. Fast forward to Sept 1999 - my first time ever in Disneyland. I'm 20 years old and dumb as rocks thinking that bellow that horrifyingly dark surface of Rivers of America are a bunch of sleeping animatronics waiting for a cue from a giant theater booth somewhere in the park. I never got to see Ursula in action, but I like holding on to the false idea of her sleeping beneath the Mark Twain...waiting...

Fantasmic was my favorite show at Disneyland! The summer when I turned 18 and got my drivers license and an Annual Pass, I would take my sister, her best friend, and I the half hour drive to hang out at Disneyland and watch Fantasmic 3 times a week. We'd watch it from the side near the Big Thunder Mountain ride exit, so you could watch the cast and crew prepare backstage.
This was the same year I learned that my favorite high school math teacher also worked nights on this show as Captain Hook specifically for this show. ((This man could do a backflip on the spot! He was probably the most popular teacher on campus.))
I have visited Disneyland frequent enough to have seen every iteration of Fantasmic in it's history at Disneyland. The Glow-Up that Maleficient Dragon got from a bunch of rags on a cherry picker to a fully realized animatronic was my favorite, even with her temperamental break downs in her first year.
Thank you!! I've been missing Disneyland lately, and this was exactly the nostalgia hit I needed.

I got goosebumps to see you covered this (just found your channel a couple weeks ago). Fantasmic was my all-time favorite Disney experience (show, attraction, movie, food, anything, you name it) as a kid, my family were APs and we watched it every single time we went, which was very often. I know the musical score by heart and almost all of the sequences/dance moves. I could recite the whole thing while listening to the soundtrack, and the outro music that plays when the lights go up still rings out through the promenade pretty often. I was devastated to see the big change after the refurbishment post-galaxys-edge. It really is a totally different show now. I know not all change is bad, I loved the projection mapping and I think it definitely needed an update...but I miss the story, the characters, and most of all, the score. Thanks for covering my favorite, least-discussed show from Disneyland in California!

Thank you. I vividly remember watching Fantasmic from the Disney Gallery (the balcony above Pirates) in 1995 and seeing Ursula on the water. For years I was wondering where she'd gone, and now I know! I also had a vacation to Disneyland in September/October of 2009 and remember loving the brand new Maleficent Dragon. She worked perfectly the night I saw her. I remember how jarring the WDW version of the show was. The newer version of Fantasmic in Disneyland is good, but I do miss the original version. Even so, I look forward to many more technical advancements and improvements that change and improve the experience!

WDW also had had that weird lift installed as a plan B for when the Dragon wasn't in the mood to breathe fire. Also in first few years years when Fantasmic was a huge draw for Studios, they used to have CM's do stand up skits and little talent things because you would often need to get to the theater a good hour and a half early for a decent seat.

I have such fond memories attached to Fantasmic. I don't know how old I was when I first saw it (1990 baby here), but it would have been within its first years of operation for sure (I actually think this is the first time it's really clicked with me that little baby me saw Fantasmic when it was still basically brand new). So many trips to Disney I remember us grabbing a spot and saving it for the show towards the end of our night. The Kaa and Chernabog scenes scared the crap out of me at the time though haha. There was one trip where I stood on the trap door on Tom Sawyer's Island and acted out Mickey's part in the show. To this day I always love the times I am able to stop and catch the show, I took my girlfriend to see it for the first time on her birthday the first year we had our passes together, we even did the Blue Bayou dining package. That was something really special. I don't like the newer version as much as the one I grew up with, nostalgia is a powerful thing, but the show never fails to impress. The main theme is an all time classic and the finale version of it especially hits the feels for me something fierce.

That's one of my most favorite things to do is stand on the stage and ride on the boat that they use in Fantasmic. That's where I think the WDW version falls down is it using a bespoke stage. If it's slow enough I love going on the island to open the hatches and look through the holes of the boxes to see which equipment is stored where.

I know budget-wise it’s probably not very likely, but with the show not operating right now I really hope WDW takes the time to redo and revamp some of the scenes in the Hollywood Studios version of the show, because for as much as I love the soundtrack and ending, that Pocahontas segment really does drag on for way too long, and feels like it was squashed in there from a different show all together.

Also, I love Fantasmic. I saw it at WDW in 2005 during the "Happiest Celebration on Earth" celebration--and my sweet 16. Such good memories! We did the "dinner and a show" at the Brown Derby, and had premium seating for the show. I remember tearing up a lot during the show. ❤

Speaking of the Disney World Fantasmic, I imagined one where it would have the same enhanced treatment that the Disneyland version has, by putting in new scenes replacing the older ones.
Like replace the bubble montage with extended musical parts for Be Our Guest and Under the Sea, 2 songs from Moana and Frozen (of course Let It Go) and A Whole New World (from the Disneyland version) replacing Pocahontas, along with Tangled in place of Snow White in the princess scene like in the Disneyland version.

    • @macsound
      @macsound Před 3 lety

That was the most obvious to me in the WDW version is how much more video there was and how less interspersed it was than DL. DL seems to use the video as a transition to clear the stage, setup a boat etc. WDW just has you watching video for minutes, which ends up making it 7:30 longer than at Disneyland!
