    I was in Hanoi last year and I loved it so much, I went back to Vietnam 3 months later, this time to Da Nang. On both trips I've never experienced pushy touts or been a victim of crime (thank God). It's best to go with an open mind and understand that there are definitely gonna be less than pleasant people around and not just in Vietnam - it's everywhere in the world. And maybe it's also because I'm a dude and I was mostly with another male friend. But don't let that stop you from visiting Vietnam - it's a very underrated place and has a lot to offer.

    when I was at Hanoi last year, my tour guide gave my family and I a long talk about what to do when people snatch us. cos apparently the crazy ppl their kidnap women. I WAS SO SCARED WHEN CHERYL SAID SHE'S GOING ALONE. I'M SO GLAD THAT SHE'S SAFE!
    we went to sapa and hiked to the village through a muddy mountain, and we already paid for the villagers to take us, but when we reached there they asked for money, and kept saying "we bring u here! we help you!" when I was sure that certain lady did not help me at all. of course I tipped the villager who helped me but NO I DON'T WANT TO TIP THE REST.

      You're part of the problems. Are you like 12 years old? You make all the Vietnamese people look bad. Haft of the problems are solved by first recognizing them. Viet Nam is a small country, don't use size as an argument.

      I am from Hanoi. I visited Singapore once in 2009 and thought never to come back. The cost of meals and accommodation is too expensive compared to Hanoi. I feel like you have been stripped of your money while the quality is nothing special in comparision with Hanoi. It is very difficult for backpackers to visit Singapore. Singapore is a fine city. Calling such a city is also true because there are so many rules like a prison.

    One tip for taking cabs:
    Try taking white or green/white cabs that has "Hanoi", "Malinh" or "Hanoi Tourist" words on them. On the whole 2 weeks there, we have been scammed probably 2 or 3 times, cuz we weren't sure or mistook the wordings on the cab, and the fare could be as high as 10 to 15 times higher than the metered fare.

    I used to live in Hanoi for more than a year. It is always safe to ride a taxi even if you don't lock the doors.Locking is a good thing but no one will do any danger or criminal act while you're inside the taxi and while it's moving. About the boat ride with the lady paddler, you can just say no. That is in Tam Coc in Ninh Binh Province and the woman who paddled for us was nice and didn't force us to give tip. It was voluntary.Also you should caller her "me oi" instead as respect because she is older than you. "Em moi" is just being addressed if the person is younger than you. But you had good choices of tour.Thanks. Peace!

    • @evedear7863
      @evedear7863 Před 4 lety

      Twernxuen that’s actually the issue. They say okay “20usd for the trip” and when you reach the end and have no alternative they charge more. That is by no mean trying to earn a living, it’s taking advantage of people’s lack of options, would be much better to just say “trip is 30” and that’s all.

People might get upset and mock you for being disrespectful. I hope you can be more careful in the future. I’m not Vietnamese myself. Watching this really brings back memories of my trip to Hanoi last December during Christmas! I first headed to Sapa where I spent a day hiking 11km along the villages and rice paddy fields. I also visited Mount Fansipan while I was there and it was really out of this world! Then I went to Halong Bay and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had - something you'd never expect simply reading from a geography textbook. Coming back to Hanoi... there wasn't much to do except to visit the same places you did but the food (bun cha!!!!) and vibes were pretty great. I would say HCM is more historical and educational (I went with my school in 2014). 10/10 would go back to anywhere in Vietnam again. However, I don't think I'd be willing to travel to Vietnam or even Thailand alone.

    After my bad experience in HCM, I don't think I would ever want to visit Vietnam again and I won't recommend Vietnam for single woman travellers and you should always be accompanied by a male companion la coz in my opinion, it's quite dangerous. My sis's handphone got snatched while we were trying to look for directions and the hotel staff told us five tourist's cameras were snatched while we were just walking on the streets. I think Bangkok is a better choice for single female travellers tbh. Me and my girlfriends were walking till 12am at Bangkok and we were using our handphone for directions half of the time and we still felt super safe

    I was at Sapa till 16th July and the weather held up just fine(mostly). Sometimes you just gotta not care about the weather forecasts and just go
