  • The text of the anthem was written by Francisco Acuña de Figueroa, who also wrote the Anthem of Paraguay. The text was officially adopted as the national anthem on July 8, 1833. Usually only the first two verses are played.
The music was composed by Francisco José Debali and Fernando Quijano, supposedly based on a theme song from Donizetti's opera. This music was first performed on July 19, 1845, and on July 25, 1848, it was officially adopted as the national anthem.
After 90 years, on May 20, 1938, the changes proposed by Gerardo Grasso and Benone Calcavecchia were made to the anthem.
    ▬▬▬▬▬ WORDS ▬▬▬▬▬
¡Orientales la Patria o la Tumba!
    ¡Libertad o con gloria morir!
Es el voto que el alma pronuncia,
    ¡Y que heroicos sabremos cumplir!
    ¡Libertad, libertad Orientales!
Ese grito a la Patria salvó
Que a sus bravos en fieras batallas
    De entusiasmo sublime inflamó.
De este don sacrosanto la gloria
    ¡Merecimos tiranos temblad!
    Libertad en la lid clamaremos,
    Y muriendo, ¡también libertad!
