Once I retire, I don't plan to buy any more, I plan to sell some occasionally to add some monthly income when I need it for a vacation or whatever. If I could do things again, I'd stack only Eagles, Maples, and generic rounds for silver (no holiday or political themes) and - for gold - only Eagles, Maples, Krugs. Instead I have a hodge-podge of various items, including those. Is there too much? No. Not if one can afford it. It's a great thing to pass down to your offspring. The number for each of us is situational. Basic needs like housing without a mortgage, hard assets, food prep, and family size all factor into stacking needs. I see silver as a barter metal for daily needs and gold as a wealth item for bigger needs. I looked at my monthly spending and began at 6 mos value, for a first stack goal. Four mos value in silver 2 mos in gold. For a second goal, I added another 6 mos value 4 mos gold 2 mos silver before a repeat for 18mos total. For me, that means silver-sized from 1 to 10 oz items. Gold I chose low-premium items based on surplus cash and gold priced "right". About 65% of my gold is sized 1 to 16 oz coins and bars with 35% fractionals and foreign sovereigns and 20 francs with low premiums. Oh, and plenty of seeds for the family to defend it.

I think 20 ounces of gold which is roughly 48,000 dollars. Then 2500 ounces of silver roughly 75,000 dollars right now should be minimum. I think 150,000 in today's money in precious metals would get the average family through. If you can meet and exceed that do it. Also every gun you own buy a few spare parts for said guns know how to replace said parts and have minimum of 1,000 rounds per caliber. If you never need it pass it on. God bless America 🇺🇸

I watched it all and you were not rambling. All of it was important, from the heart, food for thought. Unfortunately my wife is addicted to fiat cash and when I wanted to use 25% of our savings for precious metals she bristled at the idea. So I wound up only using 2.5% of our savings. And the reason Im stacking isn’t one of the two that people gave to you at the coin show which you mentioned. Reason #3: It’s for something extra as a retirement investment. Yes, I will continue to buy and everything is going in my deep stack. Today, Im selling what little constitutional silver I have and rolling it over into two more tubes of silver eagles for further investment purposes. If the trend of silver and gold continues, silver will gain another 200% in the next 15 years like it has in the past two 15 year periods. Good luck to all of us.

Gold is up due to the demand that appears to be slowing down, owning your home helps stabilize your income to a certain point as in escrow that continues to increase over time. Owning PMs as well but again you have to be careful with premiums and timing when buying and selling, but learning value in other things that you have better control in is like secondhand goods found in numerous places like yard sales, thrift stores, flea markets and even at antique malls and stores for these mistakes that can be sold locally and even online as in ebay just to name one or two. Another option is collecting versus stacking sovereign coinage and in my case certified slab coins. I can go on and on. Only you are in control of your destiny and please be careful what you wish for it mostly likely will come true over time.

How much to stack? Well, my view as an older fellow:
    1) Never put any money into any metals that you may need in the next 5 years. (In other words, have a healthy cash stack 1st)
    2) If you are younger (under 50) then gold is the best long-term play, since it has better potential of retaining value in the long run.
    3) If you over 50, then I think silver is a better play. It has more volatility, but more potential for growth than a loss in the 10-year window.
    4) If you are over 65, you typically have one foot in the grave and one foot out, so again, silver has more potential for your loved ones you leave it to, but in reality, over 65, cash flow is way more important than metals, due to increased health-care costs you will face, so it may be smarter to cut way back on the stacking in that 65-70 plus year old range.
    5) If you have a huge stack, it can be challenging to sell in bulk at one time. (And if you can, it will likely be well under spot) - I have only one high-volume LCS near me, and even he will not readily buy 20oz of gold or more without advance notice. More than that, it depends on his inventory. (He does not like having more than 100oz of gold on hand.) With silver, he usually stops buying when he has 10k ounces on hand. This means if I had 5k ounces of silver to dump, it would be a very rare event for him to be interested in all of it, (especially now, while he has a surplus of inventory) unless I was willing to take a couple dollars under spot. (he pays spot and over for smaller amounts, depending on the items, just to keep this example in perspective)
Personally, my cap on silver is 2,000 ounces, with the sweet spot being 1,000 ounces. The reason is weight....You simply could not carry much more than 1,000 ounces if you had to leave and carry it. (for me, that amount is more like 500 ounces)
I already sold all my gold and have the cash stuck back, and in a few more years, I will dump all my silver, and only keep about $500 face value in junk silver as a forever hold.
Folks can bad-mouth fiat currency all they want, but the reality is, cash is still king.
I agree with Seeker - the likelihood of society converting to an all-metals trade or bartering system is about as high as getting hit in the head by a meteorite. I am sure there would be pockets of society that would accept it, but overall, not a big chance. The reason is simple math.....Only about 10% of the population have any metals beyond jewelry, so if cash became worthless tomorrow, there simply is not enough folks that understand or have metals to start seeing it in wide use. Those 90% with no metals would simply over-run everyone else, and would likely become takers, instead of traders. (If they have no metals, they likely have no food stocks or water filtration, etc....With our country basically being ran on a 3-7 day restock level, it would be pretty unbearable after 2 weeks with no new deliveries to the grocery stores.) - And for the gung-ho types, you will never be able to protect or defend against a hoard of 10 looters, let alone the group of a hundred and more that will be banding together to feed themselves.

If SHTF, then most likely food will be a bit different to acquire to eat and feed ourselves and families especially in times of desperation. I'm a 3rd generation stacker, and I've been stacking since 2003, as an adult and I use to earn dimes and 1/2s for doing stuff around the house and whatnot... I don't really count that though, but over all I had stacking goals back in the early 2000's and it was 1000 ozt of silver, and then I reached my goal back in like 2010...then I took a break from DCA ING, then started hitting it hard again in 2014, and made a new goal to hit 2k by 2024... Well fell short, that's for sure, covid hit my family hard, plus had some of my stuff stolen.. But long story short, I unfortunately ended up starting all Over again and have a gold of 500 ozt for normal minted coins like eagles, Maples, and britannia's... And 100 ozt of numismatic / key dates which is the ones I'm going to save the pass down to my kids.... And have a goal of 2030 to have this amount (600ozt total).. But want to get at least 10ozt of gold in whatever format... I just DCA $250 - $350 a month.... And honestly, even if I hit my goals, I'll probably still stack %90 and some BU / AU stuff to pass down to the kids as well... But one day I'm hoping to get enough to buy a nice RV trailer and truck so my wife and I can to the RV thing for a few years to find that one place / town that specks to us... But if anything, I'm just happy knowing it's there to hold onto especially during these uncertain times... Having to start over again has giving me a new perspective...

I stack for many different reasons. First off I love collecting different kinds of rounds and bars because they look neat and a lot of times I find pieces that are priced close to spot price, so if I decide that it's no longer cool to me I can get my money back and move on to the next cool thing. Second, I treat it as a savings account that so far has performed better than any savings account I ever had. The majority of the silver I have purchased is worth considerably more than I paid for it, while the money I had put into savings account has pretty much stayed the same. Third, is security, believe it or not silver is far more secure than fiat, it cant be hacked like my bank account and or debit/credit cards have several times. If anyone comes for my silver the likelyhood of me looking the soon to be late thief in the eye is very high. Fourth and most importantly is world wide value. It doesnt matter where I go in the world silver is recognized as currency by it's weight and not what is stamped on it showing which country decided to claim it. and most importantly it's pretty much indestructable. Whatever could destroy my silver would also permanently destroy me deeming any importance I have to silver no longer important.
