- Ryo Akiyama is Digimon's most interesting human and his connection to Millenniummon, the villain of the Digimon Adventure: 2020 Reboot, can NOT go unnoticed.
Will Ryo be a part of Digimon Adventure: 2020? Find out everything there is to know about the Tamer Who Leapt Through Time!

This is a remix of my Episode 25 Review video. That video had a short section about Ryo and I always disliked how this cool segment was hidden inside a standard episode review. So I took the segment, added new footage, recorded an intro and an outro, and released this remix video! Thought I'd explain myself in case any longtime fans are watching this and getting deja vu :)

Ryo is/was a fantastic idea for a character. Through him the writers basically found a way to insert a representation of the fans into continuity, and in such a way that it makes sense. This is a character who is a singularity and could theoretically hop into any digimon media with knowledge of prior ones. He is us, making a cameo and fighting along the digi-destined. It's brilliant.
Ryo and Monodramon deserved a digivolution and biomerge scene in tamers! But it would be cool if Ryo is the new digidestined in the remake. But we may also get Meico too. Just so many possibilities
He may also be the key to biomerge digivolvution for the reboot which may be for season 2 to show others like dna as well
At least people here seems to like Ryo on reddits they hate the crap out of him for some reason but I’m assuming is because of rika you know how weird and creepy weabs get for their “wifu” 🤮 I hate using that word.
Also Xros wars: hunters climax had a main focus on universe-hopping crossovers
Ryo even appears this season along with the other tamers, through the Cirueta of Justimon.
Such cool lore, hopefully there's room for this timeline jumping in the new adventure continuity later down the line! Nice vid as always! 🥳
i actually said in one of Based DIGIMON videos, that with such short time left on the series i think its possible for them to make a 2nd season, what if the last episode of this season they have the main boss fight and lose! Then Ryo appears to rescue them, then they leave it on a cliff hanger? season 2 can feature Ryo for a little bit and then there is plenty of time for the team to all get their megas and any new forms and also maybe even return to the real world again like in the original.
just a theory but it would be neat :P
Fingers crossed! I would love it if this new show would keep going with other characters we know exist in the original Adventure timeline like Ryo, like Willis from the movie, and like Meiko from Tri!
I have been summoned 😜 A season 2 would be great as you say because I feel it can complete the whole picture, whilst also still giving us more (and more time too).
We need to hammer away at Toei to prove the viewership and support is there for a season 2 👊🏻
Similar to how Xros War have 3 season with Season 1 end in cliffhanger and season 2 end up on a good note.
Season 1 ends with them killing base Millenniummon, but it says it will return and converts to Moon Form. Because Moon cannot realistically be defeated, Ryo comes in and offers to help. Cue season 2.
Personally he’s amazing and I want him in, although a sequel with him, Willis, Michael and Meiko would he bomb
Yes please!
Oh please no! No more Meiko! I can't stand her constant crying...
Yes... get him to appear in Digimon Adventure... a weird story involving how he was also present when the Holy Digimon fought together the first time... and have him and Joe geekout over timeline jumping cos Joe read about it all in one of his textbooks or something and how the Digimon timeline is just Data even Archival Data he has access too.
Would be cool finale to have Ryo show up at the end of the fight against Zeed Milleniumon, reminisce about Agumon and finally show the jogress with Monodramon into a digitama... It would tie the whole Ryo timeline into a neat little bow in this universe
Great video and loved learning more about the extended universe. There isn’t a ton of Digimon knowledge out there this put together. I’d love to see a video or videos talking about the connected timelines and how they all fit together.
Thanks so much! There is so much more to this character that I didn’t touch on because I wanted this to be almost like a TL;DR “in two minutes” video, but the lore is vast. Hopefully I can do more in depth videos maybe when the current season ends or goes on break and I have more time
Hey folks bad news: someone claiming to be Toei has been targeting CZcams channels with unjustified copyright strikes and TheDigiKnow has been a targeted. 11 of my videos were targeted which is well over the 3 strikes required for your channel to be permanently shut down in 7 days UNLESS you can dispute the strikes. I'm also not able to post a video until this is resolved. I'm trying my very hardest right now to dispute the claims as I believe everything I create here is protected under Fair Use Commentary & Criticism. But if you are a fan please consider following @TheDigiKnow on twitter (twitter.com/thedigiknow) for updates -- I'll try to keep you all informed there and worst case scenario, if the channel gets deleted you will hear news about what comes next via Twitter. Thank you!
You also forgot to metion his appearance in the digimon adventure V-Tamer manga where he had cross over with that universe's tai. So ryo has travelled to 3 different universes and has appeared in 3 different forms of media. Also the V-Tamer manga has crossed over with the 1998 series, there was a cross over chapter with the 02 cast.
Thank you!
You also forget that v-tamer had a crossover with frontier where takuya and taichi team up in that one chapter
@yymenghis64 oh shit I remember hearing v tamer is coming back for a special chapter
@yymenghis64 do you know where we can read this chapter?
He also appears in Digimon World DS as well! I can't remember if he was in Digimon Dawn/Dusk, though...
I think Ryo will come back. We've got 20-something episodes left, that's plenty of time.
And it isn't the first time Adventure canons have crossed paths.
In Adventure V-Tamer 01, there are a few special crossover episodes where the Taichi of that series meets with Daisuke and Ryo (also Takuya).
V-Tamer ended in 2003, but was brought back last year for a new chapter where Taichi meets the Taichi from Adventure:.
If they're digging far enough into Digimon's past to bring Millenniumon back and revive V-Tamer, there's *no* way they aren't going to pull out the hero of the Wonderswan trilogy, whose destiny is tied to Millenniumon's.
What's more, is that they could very easily tie the ancient war to the Ancient Digital World established from the Wonderswan games.
That's the original Digital World, created by the ABC and ENIAC computers, which eventually splintered into alternate realities (explaining the myriad different continuities).
This guy could have appeared in Frontier, Savers, Xros Wars and Applimonsters, he could have appeared in Adventure Tri, but I think Bandai didn't think he could not be a good gimmick for the Digimon franchise, and then he was forgotten by everyone.
I hope with this video, Bandai could bring back Ryo someday.
Ryo's timeline jumping stuff is insanely hard to figure out from the outside, though. It's weirdly complex and I've never been a huge fan... unlike Mirei. Mirei is immediately mysterious, serves the same function of jumping between game timelines, and is mostly ust a side character who manages evolution stuff and occasionally helps the heroes. So it feels way more natural to have her show up in multiple places since it's implied she's some form of digital life form.
Same basic concept but I feel like it's a way better execution of the idea to make it obvious that the character 'doesn't belong' instead of trying to work the character in more subtly and naturally, like with Ryo.
never new, i appreciate this video immensely
As I mentioned before in one of your videos, I think that by the last few episodes, or as a movie/ova, the digidestined will be part of millenniummon return and Ryo will have his arc then.
poor you people who grew up with the English versions
Ikr lol
Yeah I needed this 😊
They literally did this again in Xros Wars with the legendary heroes...
If Ryo can come back maybe Willis can come back with a purified Cocomon and clap Millenniumon cheeks.
Willis and Ryo in an Adventure tv series? Yes pls
Ryo is a plot point they never seem to come back too, they really need to make another Tamers season.
You can make a "poll" about this in the community section, but in my opinion, I *don't think* that Ryo Akiyama is gonna be featured in this anime. It feels "too late" for him to be in the show at this point (they would've teased his existence way earlier if he was scheduled to appear in this show) and it would be *very confusing* for "casual" Digimon fans to see him appear out of the blue in the last couple of episodes before the series ends just to stop Millenniummon. I think the series writers are PROBABLY gonna give us a new "Omnimon" form (or an existing one) to handle ZeedMillenniummon IMO.
I feel pretty similarly. No way to make Ryo come in without it feeling like he’s overshadowing 40+ episodes of character work. If the kids can’t beat Millenniummon but this...random new guy can? I don’t know how you make that work
I mean... He did appear in Tamers kind of out of the blue without properly explaining who he is and why he looks like the guy from the 02 flashback with Ken. Even the flashback with Ken where he and Ryo are fighting in the Digital World was quite confusing for a casual viewer.
I do believe that it was made canon that he originated in Tamers, somehow getting into the Digital World there and winding up in the Adventure timeline, before he made his first appearance in the WonderSwan games. The card game tournament where he beat Rika/Ruki was most likely happened before his first entry into the Tamers digital world and winds up in the Adventure timeline. The English Dub of Tamers by Saban even hints at this in one episode "Blame It On Ryo" where he tells some of the Tamers that he can get them home but they have to go through another dimension first, most likely hinting at the Adventure timeline, as he has just returned to the Tamers' Digital World following the events of the third WonderSwan game; D-1 Tamers, the last time he worked with the Digidestined from Adventure. It was indeed retconned that he was from the Tamers timeline as when he returned to the Human World in Tamers, he was reunited with his father. Which makes me believe his parents in the Adventure games were likely adoptive parents. At least that's what makes sense to me, it may not be 100% what happened, but that's what I get from putting the pieces together and going by what others said.
V-Tamer 01 already confirmed that Adventure 1999 and Adventure 2020 already exist in the same multiverse canon. Also, Ryo is in it.
I didn't realize how much was peppered in..the gateway in 01 that Geni (sp?) Shows the Digidestines is interesting. He tells them that it can leaded to many dimensions if they didn't pick the correct key it could be bad.
Bruh, I didnt even think was a possibility. That and Milleniummons crystal form in ghost game, so many missed opportunities
Millenniummon: “I don’t, I don’t want to kill you! What would I do without you? Go back to ripping off mob dealers? No, no, NO! No. You… you… complete me.”
I'd wish.
Do you know if World and Story games had any connections to any anime? I think some give at least an explanation how digital world appeared and how it influences the real world.
He’s living proof of the Digimon Multiverse
ryo looks like a younger version of genni
This is because Genai is literally a clone of Ryo. This is a consequence of Ryo's various time travels.
Millenniumon is his nemesis but also his Digimon, no?
What was ryo doing with ken in 02 and where that fits in the canon?
basically Ryo and Ken were childhood friends before they became chosen children. (pre-emperor Ken) and they fought Millenniummon.
Millenniummon Dark seed that hit Ken's neck is reason why he end up becoming Digimon Emperor in the first place.
I thought this was already a thing after Digimon Fusion bringing all the digidestined generations together in its last season
So wait if its game 1 game 2 tamers how and when does he go back to 02 and Our War Game timelines? Does he travel thru the 02 and OWG events before the second game? Or after the events of tamers? on second thought I dont wanna know it would just make me wanna play those old games and I Cannot Do That
Not much explanation bud needed for me on Ryo. He’s one cool dude his voice actor rocks. One tough fella for sure. Admire his fortitude and also love how he handles his Digimon with such strength and conviction willing to punish him! Additionally he’s shrouded with Mystery. Maybe Taners is the real world everywhere else is alternate. The random appearance on 02 just left everyone wanting to know more 02 was riddled with mystery for sure
Damn. Sucks that Rio never made it to the 2020 universe
Yeah :( there are still about 12 episodes to go but I doubt it
I've definitely gotta watch Digimon Adventure 2020. But I still haven't watched the sub of DA99. I've watched the dub a few times, though.
I need to get on the new anime
Personally, I would save this for after the 2020 children defeat Milliennummon if for no other reason than to give them this victory alone rather than just having them rely on Ryo to help them win. However, they could make him a Gennai figure of sorts for them since we still don't have him in this reboot (and maybe some fans have been wonderin where he is); granted, it would have to be once everyone got their mega forms first.
Ryo archenemies is zedmilinimon so of course he will be there at the beginning of the fight or near the end of the fight when all hope is lost he will appear to save the day and give hope to tai and Matt
Boy it sure would be wild of Digimon 2020 actually gave us Ryo
Conversly It sure would suck if Wargreymon just spirit bombed one of the strongest digimon in canon away before any real cool plot stuff could happen
Nice 👍
I was so confused when I saw him in 02 in Kens flashback
what episode of Tamers did he first appear in?
He could show up if their teasing Goddramon in posters he could have a chance
Again is cool that your trying to connect the dots and all and say it’s canon however there is a small problem… how do you explain Ryo’s dad appearing in the tammers universe….
You really need to add v tamer manga to your videos. Rio shows up there and confirms that there can be Tais in several timelines. Davis even confirms it. Not to mention the season 2 of Fusion ending.
Wait, Ryo's dad was in in the Tamer's universe. And if he was from adventure's universe, why would he just take up playing card games in the Tamer's universe? What was he doing that whole time? I think they just made it up as they went along with Ryo haha
Alternate timelines and time travel are concepts not foreign to kids shows either. Dragon Ball Z did it as well where both Trunks and Cell each came from separate timelines. I am however not expecting Ryo to turn up in Adventure 2020 even though that would be cool.
True cause Ryu is always tied to Millenniummon. But also we never seen a shadow of another digimon or tamer so far. You know some times they like to do that hole shadow cilowet of a character. My question if they bring him to the 2020 anime who will be his partner digimon.
Digimon 2020 is wierd. It's so good, but it's doing things most haven't done before. Like alternate evolutions being not just dark digivolutions but situational and based off environment and taichi getting eaten for heaven's sake. I wouldn't be surprised if Ryo came back, and I kinda hope he does. But just in case im not gonna keep my hopes up
He is the trunks / selver of the digimon verse
So it is a good bet then that it'll be Ryo Akiyama that saves Taichi and Agumom?
I kinda want to see a faction in Adventures that are suspicious of Ryo’s death and then travel universes to the tamers one and that could be a crossover
Could Ryo also be jeni?
But what about Ken
So Roy is basically Django from boktai who go from universe to universe.
He is Gennia just saying
onore dikeido
aaannnnd he din't show up in 2020
Pretty sure Ryo is Gennai
Ryo is the true Digidestined
So wait, what games are Ryo from???
Japanese exclusive ones for the WonderSwan.
And then toei appeared and said "I don't give a flying f about ryo or continuity I'm gonna make Tai destroy zeedmillenniummon with a not genkidama to make him seem cooler yes brilliant"
So the answer is no
Anyone who thinks that's too crazy for a kids show doesn't know how many things for kids have a multiverse. Like comic books, for example. And Pokémon.
However, Digimon was actually created for teenagers. At least in Japan. The US ruined it as per usual. Baseball, racism, and ruining thing for the rest of the planet. That's Amurica.
Yah fax bro
welp he didnt appear in the 2020 series lmao
Welp…that didnt happen
yeah lol
@thedigiknow if anything you're theory an plot would have made that joke of an ending way better which could have erased what we did get from our minds
Personally, I think Ryo is a wasted character who just appears in 02 for Ken's flash back and then vanishes completely and not even given a single mention in the rest of the season, while he just appears in Tamers, little is given to his backstory, such as how he ended up in the digital world or met his partner, remove him from the show, you loose very little aside from a possible love interst for Rika and his Biomerge form was rubbish and extremely weak compared to the others!
Which is ironic and at the same time sad, given that the Milleniumon/Machinidramon,the partner
of Ryo, was responsible for much of the confusion in the digital world that we saw in zero 2.
That’s probably because his entire story is centered on his own series.
Didn't happen..
I don’t like Ryo. He’s pretty much a Gary Stu.
@yymenghis64 They didn’t help.
@yymenghis64 Gary Stu is also known as a character that usually overpowers others, which does fit Ryo more.
@@KingNazaruhe just seems like that Because he is a game character who is introduced into the anime in a strange way, ignoring his story in the game
First hahaha
