  • HOW TO QUIT MINOXIDIL AND KEEP YOUR HAIR REGROWTH RESULTS? HAIR GROWTH EXPERT EXPLAINS
    00:00 Introduction
    00:19 What is Minoxidil
01:17 How to Wean Off over 9 months
Is it feasible to discontinue the use of minoxidil without experiencing significant hair loss? Hello, I'm William Gaunitz, CEO, and founder of Evolution Hair Loss Institute, and a fellow with the World Trichology Society, with over 21 years of experience in helping people regrow hair. Minoxidil, a potent blood pressure drug used orally and topically, is globally recognized as the primary treatment for hair loss, particularly the 5% formulation for both men and women. If you've been on 5% minoxidil, especially twice daily for over 90 days, abruptly stopping can result in hair shedding. Minoxidil acts as a vasodilator, expanding blood flow to hair follicles, synchronizing with hair growth. While it encourages new and thicker growth, it doesn't address the underlying issue.
If considering discontinuation, it's crucial to block the root cause of hair loss. For example, if DHT-related, males may use finasteride or herbal DHT blockers. For nutritional loss, addressing ferritin, iron, vitamin D3, and adjusting the diet for blood type is essential. Achieving a sustained equilibrium allows for a gradual weaning process. If using minoxidil twice daily, transitioning to once daily for 90 days is the initial phase, coupled with internal measures to block the underlying cause. Monitoring shedding and hair changes is crucial. If satisfactory, further reduction to every other day for the next 90 days is recommended, followed by a decrease to every third day or twice a week for an additional 90 days. If after nine months, hair remains healthy and continues to grow, weaning off minoxidil may be considered, indicating a stabilized influence of the drug due to blocking the underlying cause. For additional guidance on hair loss, check out my other video. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments; I'm here to help.

I used to do minoxidil twice daily consistently for about a year and watched my hair thickness slowly come back. Then I weaned off it gradually throughout a year and noticed most of the gains were retained. After that I got complacent and stopped totally. After about half a year, I noticed that my hair wasn't as thick as before. Went back to using minoxidil every 2-3 days and it was good enough to bring back some coverage and thickness.
After a couple of years I started incorporating dutasteride. Not only was my receding hairline halted, fine hair even started regrowing at the previously barren areas.
Around half a year after that I started using stamp-type hair needlers with 0.7mm needle depth which was sufficiently deep to pierce the hair bulge while causing acceptably minimal pain and bleeding. The needling was a game changer. Fine hair started growing in between my matured hair.
It's been over 3 years since I incorporated occasional scalp needling (just once every 4-6 weeks). I no longer use dutasteride and I use minoxidil around twice weekly. My hair thickness and density do not seem to be reducing thus far and is actually pretty good. It would appear that permanent reversal of hair thinning was achieved.

Questions: long so I can understand lol
    1. so because it is increasing blood flow that’s why new hair growth is possible…
When you come off … IF you lose hair , you’re losing the “NEW” growth… but you won’t be shedding the hair that has been growing naturally.
But… because it’s extending the the growing stages ( keeping hair from shedding naturally) you may see lose that is just the hair that should have shredded naturally … ??
    2. If it’s is stimulating new follicles … why would the “NEW” hair fall out when coming off?
Isn’t it already established hat it is growing … and coming off will not promote FURTHER growth of new hair ? Or are those new hairs dependent on the meds because the follicle needs that boost in order to grow hair ?
    3. Can it grow hair where there has never been hair?
Example: eyebrows? Hairline? That never has had hair before?
Or does there need to be a folicle that has once grown a hair but is weak or whatever?
    4. To confirm: will this med affect old growth at all?
I have a lot of thick hair but just want to increase in areas …
Getting more hair is a bonus but do not want to mess with the hair I already grow naturally and is heathy
Thank uou… sorry that was a lot of run on sentences

I have well water with high iron and I started taking a daily for men, D3, snd biotin supplement. This week I just started trying out Mielle which has helped with inflammation and irritation. I tried to ween off of the minoxidil while still taking the pill form DHT Blocker Minoxidil. I noticed clunks of hair coming out of my left side. I definitely don’t recommend weening, or stopping. Stick with the system that Dr G has in place. It really does works. At some point I’m going to start posting my pictures of my own results. My hair is past my shoulders and nearly at my mid back, my goal when I started this project was to get the things that guys in Jamaica wear. I showed up for a consultation, and the lady asked me was I mixed, I said no, she said are you sure? So I said my grandmother is white, and my mom is mixed, and she said your would be difficult because it’s straight/way! I said to her I see white people with dreadlocks! She said it would really hard because your hair is silky, so I understood her when said silky, no one wants to braid my hair, it’s that difficult. I can’t even greasy products that black folks use. I remember as I child, shopping in the grocery store with my grandmother, I would grad hair products for black people, my grandmother would laugh. She would grab Wella Bossom shampoo 🧴 and conditioner as backup. Grandmothers know best. The products for black folks would sit in the bathroom cabinet all summer long until my cousins would visit.

I used Minoxidil for 6 months, and grew 2 years of hair loss back. I stopped using it for over a week, and starting losing my hair again. Once I got back on Minoxidil 2x daily, my hair instantly grew back. So far so good after 1 year of use.
With that being said, are there any long term side effects using Minoxidil twice daily? The only occasional symptoms I get are headaches. Also, what do you think about Ketoconazole shampoo?

Thank you for that information. No there's no long term side effects with minoxidil. Problem is usually overtime it becomes less effective predominantly because most people do not block the underlying reason for the loss. As you've handled any dht or vitamin D3 that may be a problem then it should hold up pretty good long term. I am not a fan of ketoconazole shampoo unless there is a reason for it. Ketoconazole is an antifungal and it does seem to have an anti-inflammatory impact on the scalp temporarily but it does not do anything for dht. Therei is there some data out there that says that it supports the reduction of inflammation caused by aga but in my opinion you are coming at that situation from the exact wrong area and it may actually cause more problems than it prevents

Now, it feels like finasteride has stopped working - hair is thinner, scalp feels a bit more inflamed and I’m producing a lot more sebum. No more watery semen. Why is this happening? Yes but there would almost be definitive decline and overall volume over time since genetically, the beard growth would be the determining factor of its original volume. I would say there's at least a 50% chance that the vast majority of the new created during the use of minoxidil would remain though if the minoxidil use was greater than 12 to 18 months

I have tried it for well over a year, and I haven’t really seen anything substantial If any at all to be honest. I finally said F it and just started using minoxidil. Hi William please help me out in my situation. I am 24M with zero family history of baldness on both sides. In 2021 march I made a stupid mistake of using 5% tropical minoxidil on my temples just to experiment if it makes them denser. Till this time i had no complains of any hair shedding just had slight issue of seb dermatitis but was managable. I used minoxidil for just a week and stopped using it due to itchy dry scalp and extreme heart palpitations. Since stopping that in march 2021 i started shedding 200+ hairs every time i shower. I am shesding in diffused manner there is no fixed pattern. I have been to 3 dermats all have said to just wait and watch. There is minor recession in hairline in these 3 years. Shedding has remained the same. Please help me what options do i have now? Should i try some safer options like hair peptides or something else. I had blood test done where for some reaosn i had very high progestrone levels and low d3 and b12 which i have fixed through supplementation.

    • @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist
      @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist  Před 5 měsíci +4

It sounds like you're having a telogen effluvium shed from the initial minoxidil reaction. The low D3 and B12 need to be addressed immediately. I would take 10,000 units of vitamin D daily for the next 90 days and start on a methylated B-12. Low D3 increases your probability of telogen effluvium and will allow it to keep going if it maintains its low levels.

As far as i know tel9gen effluvium doesnt need minoxidil. Take nutritional supplememnts and most importnat of all good sleep and take less stress. In about 90 days you will have new hairs which will be permanent since telogen efflivium is not same as male pattern baldness and you dont need to continue taking some drug like mino for the rest of your life as people with male pattern baldness do

    • @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist
      @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist  Před 8 minutami

Using minoxidil for facial hair growth can be effective, but it's important to understand what happens when you stop using it. Here's what you need to know:
      How Minoxidil Works:
Minoxidil works by prolonging the growth phase of hair follicles and improving blood flow to the area where it is applied. This can lead to thicker and fuller hair growth, whether on the scalp or the face.
      Potential Outcomes of Stopping Minoxidil:
Temporary Gains: If the hair growth achieved with minoxidil is still dependent on the treatment, stopping it may cause these hairs to eventually shed. This is because minoxidil supports the hair follicles and maintains their growth, and discontinuing the treatment can lead to a reversal of its effects.
Permanent Gains: Some users report that hair grown during minoxidil use may become permanent if the follicles have been sufficiently stimulated to enter a regular growth cycle on their own. This varies from person to person and isn't guaranteed.
      Considerations:
Gradual Reduction: If you plan to stop using minoxidil, consider tapering off gradually rather than stopping abruptly. This might help reduce the risk of sudden shedding.
Consistency: For optimal and sustained results, consistency is key. Missing occasional applications is generally okay, but regular use increases the likelihood of maintaining gains.
      Monitoring and Adjustments:
Observation: After stopping minoxidil, monitor your facial hair over the next few months to see if there is any shedding or thinning.
Re-evaluation: If you notice significant shedding, you might decide to resume minoxidil use or explore other treatments or techniques to maintain your results.
Other Tips for Facial Hair Growth:
Healthy Diet: Ensure you are consuming enough vitamins and minerals, particularly those that support hair health (e.g., biotin, vitamin E, and zinc).
Good Skincare: Keep your skin healthy and clean to support hair follicle health.
Avoid Stress: Stress management is important, as stress can negatively impact hair growth.
In conclusion, there is a possibility of shedding if you stop using minoxidil, as its effects can be temporary without continued use. However, each individual's response can vary. If you decide to stop using it, monitor your results and consider consulting with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.

Yeah, it sounds like you're having a contact dermatitis to something. Propylene glycol is a very common irritant that's in minoxidil. I've only seen a handful of true, minoxidil allergies, but you'll know if you have an minoxidil issue because of the very dark circles under your eyes and very definitive swelling.
