- HOW TO QUIT MINOXIDIL AND KEEP YOUR HAIR REGROWTH RESULTS? HAIR GROWTH EXPERT EXPLAINS
00:00 Introduction
00:19 What is Minoxidil
01:17 How to Wean Off over 9 months
Is it feasible to discontinue the use of minoxidil without experiencing significant hair loss? Hello, I'm William Gaunitz, CEO, and founder of Evolution Hair Loss Institute, and a fellow with the World Trichology Society, with over 21 years of experience in helping people regrow hair. Minoxidil, a potent blood pressure drug used orally and topically, is globally recognized as the primary treatment for hair loss, particularly the 5% formulation for both men and women. If you've been on 5% minoxidil, especially twice daily for over 90 days, abruptly stopping can result in hair shedding. Minoxidil acts as a vasodilator, expanding blood flow to hair follicles, synchronizing with hair growth. While it encourages new and thicker growth, it doesn't address the underlying issue.
If considering discontinuation, it's crucial to block the root cause of hair loss. For example, if DHT-related, males may use finasteride or herbal DHT blockers. For nutritional loss, addressing ferritin, iron, vitamin D3, and adjusting the diet for blood type is essential. Achieving a sustained equilibrium allows for a gradual weaning process. If using minoxidil twice daily, transitioning to once daily for 90 days is the initial phase, coupled with internal measures to block the underlying cause. Monitoring shedding and hair changes is crucial. If satisfactory, further reduction to every other day for the next 90 days is recommended, followed by a decrease to every third day or twice a week for an additional 90 days. If after nine months, hair remains healthy and continues to grow, weaning off minoxidil may be considered, indicating a stabilized influence of the drug due to blocking the underlying cause. For additional guidance on hair loss, check out my other video. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments; I'm here to help.

Thanks so much Doc! I appreciated this video.
I used to do minoxidil twice daily consistently for about a year and watched my hair thickness slowly come back. Then I weaned off it gradually throughout a year and noticed most of the gains were retained. After that I got complacent and stopped totally. After about half a year, I noticed that my hair wasn't as thick as before. Went back to using minoxidil every 2-3 days and it was good enough to bring back some coverage and thickness.
After a couple of years I started incorporating dutasteride. Not only was my receding hairline halted, fine hair even started regrowing at the previously barren areas.
Around half a year after that I started using stamp-type hair needlers with 0.7mm needle depth which was sufficiently deep to pierce the hair bulge while causing acceptably minimal pain and bleeding. The needling was a game changer. Fine hair started growing in between my matured hair.
It's been over 3 years since I incorporated occasional scalp needling (just once every 4-6 weeks). I no longer use dutasteride and I use minoxidil around twice weekly. My hair thickness and density do not seem to be reducing thus far and is actually pretty good. It would appear that permanent reversal of hair thinning was achieved.
what was the product that halted your receding hairline and that fine started regrowing at the previously barren areas. pls i want to by it to

Very useful information which i searching from many years. Thanks
I quit Minoxidil, Finasteride and Ketoconazole and kept my hair. About every 2 years I have a 3-month routine that keeps me good for another 2 years; my research is currently focused on increasing that time interval as well as re growing my temples. I am a 62 year old man that began balding at 16 and was nearly completely bald by my mid-20s. I now have more hair than I had in early teens. It is possible!
What is the every two year 2 year 3 month routine you that you follow?
I need to post my protocol in addition to the other videos I have posted. It will be another month as I’m still finishing new research on Insulin/Cortisol and early-onset balding. I will have 2 protocols

Questions: long so I can understand lol
1. so because it is increasing blood flow that’s why new hair growth is possible…
When you come off … IF you lose hair , you’re losing the “NEW” growth… but you won’t be shedding the hair that has been growing naturally.
But… because it’s extending the the growing stages ( keeping hair from shedding naturally) you may see lose that is just the hair that should have shredded naturally … ??
2. If it’s is stimulating new follicles … why would the “NEW” hair fall out when coming off?
Isn’t it already established hat it is growing … and coming off will not promote FURTHER growth of new hair ? Or are those new hairs dependent on the meds because the follicle needs that boost in order to grow hair ?
3. Can it grow hair where there has never been hair?
Example: eyebrows? Hairline? That never has had hair before?
Or does there need to be a folicle that has once grown a hair but is weak or whatever?
4. To confirm: will this med affect old growth at all?
I have a lot of thick hair but just want to increase in areas …
Getting more hair is a bonus but do not want to mess with the hair I already grow naturally and is heathy
Thank uou… sorry that was a lot of run on sentences
Thanks David Spade.
Thanks Doc. I'm in the very early stage of male pattern baldness. Bought a one year supply of Minoxidil and been using twice daily for one and a half months in. I was wondering how to stop using Minoxidil after I've achieved my desired results. Will follow your video instructions when the time comes 👍🏻
Tnx sir. For this valuable information 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Never thought I’d be searching ways to get a thicker hairline because all my life I’ve never had the issue. My dad is 56 and has a small forehead with thick hair (also no grey) and his dad is 86 who went grey at 30 and has an even thicker hairline. Mine isn’t bad but I’ve definitely seen changes over the past year.
What’s your opinion on 5% Redensyl for DHT and nutritional loss? And does topical melatonin absorb transdermally and cause drowsiness? Just 300mcg of melatonin taken orally is enough to put you to sleep. Also, how does one supplement ferritin just above 70ng/mL without jacking their iron levels too high?
Thank you for the information
What are the precautions we should take after stopping minoxidil to keep hair safe
i use minoxidil for like 6 months now.. mair hair got a lot thicker and stronger, overall the density got better... some patchy areas even got darker again, but its not like that my old hair did come back... anyway, what i find really shocking, i didnt lose any hair for months...
i can show, brush through my hair, there is not a single hair falling out again, thats mindblowing... i wish i could keep this :D
i will soon hop on topical finasterid since im planning a hairstransplant this year..

great video doc. i dont like the idea of using min for the rest of eternity. but i still question whether or not dht really is a cause for hairloss and not an additional side effect.
we know T converts to dht in low oxygen environment. i like the tidbit about hair growing in proportion to the blood supply it gets. i just want to increase my bloodflow!
Vitamind D3 will help with that
I was on minoxidil for about 3 or 4 months twice a day. Quit cold turkey. Now I'm losing far more hair than I had when I started. Not just losing the gains. What can I do about this? I have well water with high iron and I started taking a daily for men, D3, snd biotin supplement. This week I just started trying out Mielle which has helped with inflammation and irritation. I quit minoxidil in February. Wondering if what I had prior to minoxidil will return? I've also been under a lot of work stress in the last 6 months. Thank you for any input. By the way, I'm a 59-year-old male.

Can I replace Minoxidil with Rosemary oil? I read somehwere Rosemary performs as good as Minoxidil.. Kindly suggest Doc.
I have used Minoxidil with Finasteride foam for 3 months everyday and after I have basically reduced it gradually, during another 6 weeks.
I have noticed just a small amount of hair fallen off, same as radically always.
I think I did well enough, right?
I have used that foam just to prevent any further hair loss, my hair being already rare since 2018.
Hopefully it helped.
Hello Doctor, first of all thank you for your great efforts on composing amazing videos. Would be great if you can help me with this question. I am in the stage 4 to 5 of hair loss, and am doing every possible remedies like diet, massage, exercise, mineral supplements EXCEPT applying MINOXIDIL. This has benefitted me in term of stop shedding & regrowth of some new baby hairs. However, my hairs are still thin on crown & baby hairs are trying their best to grow, but I can't see much growth. Can I somehow grow my hairs thicker without using minoxidil ?
Thank you. What if a person doesn’t know and cannot know the real reason for their hair loss? Mine may be because of stress but there’s many other reasons and a lot of them cannot be changed unfortunately.
I tried to ween off of the minoxidil while still taking the pill form DHT Blocker Minoxidil. I noticed clunks of hair coming out of my left side. I definitely don’t recommend weening, or stopping. Stick with the system that Dr G has in place. It really does works. At some point I’m going to start posting my pictures of my own results. My hair is past my shoulders and nearly at my mid back, my goal when I started this project was to get the things that guys in Jamaica wear. I showed up for a consultation, and the lady asked me was I mixed, I said no, she said are you sure? So I said my grandmother is white, and my mom is mixed, and she said your would be difficult because it’s straight/way! I said to her I see white people with dreadlocks! She said it would really hard because your hair is silky, so I understood her when said silky, no one wants to braid my hair, it’s that difficult. I can’t even greasy products that black folks use. I remember as I child, shopping in the grocery store with my grandmother, I would grad hair products for black people, my grandmother would laugh. She would grab Wella Bossom shampoo 🧴 and conditioner as backup. Grandmothers know best. The products for black folks would sit in the bathroom cabinet all summer long until my cousins would visit.
I am totally confused as to what you are talking about 🤔

This video is great. I am a girl and i lost hair because of vitamin d deficiency and stress. Been treating it by taking vitamin d3 and using topical minoxidil 2% twice a day for about 6 months. My vitamin d levels have gotten back to normal and so far, I've see new regrowth but I've been so scared of stopping minoxidil because all of the horror stories I've heard. So, what i gather from this is that as long as i keep my vitamin d at a normal level i can start the process of stopping minoxidle?
Did you stop minoxidil?
Well, I was using topical Minoxidil 5% once a day but broke my right arm and the application was difficult so I stopped completely for 3 months. Didn't notice any change at all. In fact my hair loss reduced significantly. The only thing I changed was taking protein supplements and vitamins to help heal the bone.
Months later I restarted on Minoxidil but just because I was worried that the problem might come back. I also use liquid caffeine and essential oils.
I won't even consider the possibility of taking systemic medication.
My father in law had finasteride for an enlarged prostate and ended up with a bad case of osteoporosis. I prefer to lose my hair to my bones.
Finasteride does not affect bone density. Please don't spread misinformation.
@@gavinr9107 That's what my father in law was told by his doctor. That finasteride caused the osteoporosis he was suffering from. Although studies seem to show contradictory results.
I know I wouldn't take it, but it's up to people to take their own decisions.
@@MariaDiazskn Regardless, that is the word of one doctor, and the results are inconclusive you conduct your own reasearh. Also - was your father on Dutasteride or Finasteride, and the dosage? This needs to be taken into consideration. If your father was taking a high dose due to prostate issues then it is entirely different due to the fractional dose a man requires to stop hair loss. Seeing as your a woman and you do not experience male pattern baldness and the psychological effect it has one on men - whether you would take it or not is not really relevant. Check out the channel 'Haircafe' if you would like additional insight.

Doctor. What if i want to change minoxidil from topical to oral. Should i follow some kind of these phases? Thank you
not a doctor. not medical advice just personal experience. i do both (topical at hairline only). went from stringy white haired old looking man to sliverfox who regularly gets approached in public w/in about 11 months. my fitness is good but same as ever. only change is hair. internet random search will say don't do it. but if you look at the published studies at NIH it's safe and pesonal experiecne its very obviously effective. Full disclosure, my oral minox also has low dose dua. i also use nutrafol, daily nioxin shampoo and won't use any hair styling products that don't have saw palmetto, biotin and caffeine. And even then it still took me almost a year of being very dedicated to the daily (and expensive) regimen to restore my full head of hair. there are no short cuts. investment and commitment required.
My question is that when you state “when you stop taking the drug you will dump hair” so are you losing the new hair that you grew? Or are you losing all the hair on your head, the hair you weren’t losing before you even started the drug
Your hair will go back to how it would be without using minoxidil. You will not lose more hair than you naturally would that is a myth (but if your underlying male pattren baldness has progressed it will be like you never took minoxidil so worse than you remember which is why people take finasteride with it). If you're one of the lucky fews you could keep some of the new hair you grew but you won't know that for many months into quitting.
I thinks sometimes you have to apply minoxidil twice per day, especially if you have long hair because then, inveitably, a part of the liquid will end up not being absorbed. I shaved my hair, and one application daily is enough and probably the absorption is better
use PRP serum topically twice a month wether your face or hairs you will see magicall results wrinkle free less dark heads face and thicker fuller shiny and no hairfall on your head and it has no side effects
Can DHT be blocked forever. If yes how could I ? Hoping for replies 😊
Does this apply to beards cuz I only use it to grow mine but I don’t have an underlying issue

What if I am using minoxidil to promote beard growth? As I do not have a beard yet, I want to promote growth in those hair follicles. Would I need to worry about losing hair on my face after effectively "gaining" a beard? I have a few hairs here and there, but it is a family trait, we get our beards later on in our late twenties. I merely want to speed up the process.
I thought the vasodilating effect wasnt the growth factor you get from Minoxidil since there are other products which do the same with less sides?

I used Minoxidil for 6 months, and grew 2 years of hair loss back. I stopped using it for over a week, and starting losing my hair again. Once I got back on Minoxidil 2x daily, my hair instantly grew back. So far so good after 1 year of use.
With that being said, are there any long term side effects using Minoxidil twice daily? The only occasional symptoms I get are headaches. Also, what do you think about Ketoconazole shampoo?
Thanks for all you do for us. You have great products too!
Thank you for that information. No there's no long term side effects with minoxidil. Problem is usually overtime it becomes less effective predominantly because most people do not block the underlying reason for the loss. As you've handled any dht or vitamin D3 that may be a problem then it should hold up pretty good long term. I am not a fan of ketoconazole shampoo unless there is a reason for it. Ketoconazole is an antifungal and it does seem to have an anti-inflammatory impact on the scalp temporarily but it does not do anything for dht. Therei is there some data out there that says that it supports the reduction of inflammation caused by aga but in my opinion you are coming at that situation from the exact wrong area and it may actually cause more problems than it prevents
I used ketoconozale shampoo for seb dermatitis and it worked for many years but now just makes my scalp horrendously itchy and flaky.

Hello , this steps could be done also for beard growth ? Hope u answer
Yes but there would almost be definitive decline and overall volume over time since genetically, the beard growth would be the determining factor of its original volume. I would say there's at least a 50% chance that the vast majority of the new created during the use of minoxidil would remain though if the minoxidil use was greater than 12 to 18 months
So, you have to cut down on the use of minoxidil in order to not encounter the effects

Hi William please help me out in my situation. I am 24M with zero family history of baldness on both sides. In 2021 march I made a stupid mistake of using 5% tropical minoxidil on my temples just to experiment if it makes them denser. Till this time i had no complains of any hair shedding just had slight issue of seb dermatitis but was managable. I used minoxidil for just a week and stopped using it due to itchy dry scalp and extreme heart palpitations. Since stopping that in march 2021 i started shedding 200+ hairs every time i shower. I am shesding in diffused manner there is no fixed pattern. I have been to 3 dermats all have said to just wait and watch. There is minor recession in hairline in these 3 years. Shedding has remained the same. Please help me what options do i have now? Should i try some safer options like hair peptides or something else. I had blood test done where for some reaosn i had very high progestrone levels and low d3 and b12 which i have fixed through supplementation.
It sounds like you're having a telogen effluvium shed from the initial minoxidil reaction. The low D3 and B12 need to be addressed immediately. I would take 10,000 units of vitamin D daily for the next 90 days and start on a methylated B-12. Low D3 increases your probability of telogen effluvium and will allow it to keep going if it maintains its low levels.
what about your heart palpitations. have they stopped after stopping minoxidl?
Can i treat my tellogen effluvium without minoxidil and take nutrition supplements?
And how much time will it take without minoxidil for my hair to grow back. Thanks
As far as i know tel9gen effluvium doesnt need minoxidil. Take nutritional supplememnts and most importnat of all good sleep and take less stress. In about 90 days you will have new hairs which will be permanent since telogen efflivium is not same as male pattern baldness and you dont need to continue taking some drug like mino for the rest of your life as people with male pattern baldness do
How long should you wait to wash your hair after using topical Mixiolidio. ???
6 hours
I need to know what can I use beside minoxidil such as cream, shampoo or something else

Using minoxidil for facial hair growth can be effective, but it's important to understand what happens when you stop using it. Here's what you need to know:
How Minoxidil Works:
Minoxidil works by prolonging the growth phase of hair follicles and improving blood flow to the area where it is applied. This can lead to thicker and fuller hair growth, whether on the scalp or the face.
Potential Outcomes of Stopping Minoxidil:
Temporary Gains: If the hair growth achieved with minoxidil is still dependent on the treatment, stopping it may cause these hairs to eventually shed. This is because minoxidil supports the hair follicles and maintains their growth, and discontinuing the treatment can lead to a reversal of its effects.
Permanent Gains: Some users report that hair grown during minoxidil use may become permanent if the follicles have been sufficiently stimulated to enter a regular growth cycle on their own. This varies from person to person and isn't guaranteed.
Considerations:
Gradual Reduction: If you plan to stop using minoxidil, consider tapering off gradually rather than stopping abruptly. This might help reduce the risk of sudden shedding.
Consistency: For optimal and sustained results, consistency is key. Missing occasional applications is generally okay, but regular use increases the likelihood of maintaining gains.
Monitoring and Adjustments:
Observation: After stopping minoxidil, monitor your facial hair over the next few months to see if there is any shedding or thinning.
Re-evaluation: If you notice significant shedding, you might decide to resume minoxidil use or explore other treatments or techniques to maintain your results.
Other Tips for Facial Hair Growth:
Healthy Diet: Ensure you are consuming enough vitamins and minerals, particularly those that support hair health (e.g., biotin, vitamin E, and zinc).
Good Skincare: Keep your skin healthy and clean to support hair follicle health.
Avoid Stress: Stress management is important, as stress can negatively impact hair growth.
In conclusion, there is a possibility of shedding if you stop using minoxidil, as its effects can be temporary without continued use. However, each individual's response can vary. If you decide to stop using it, monitor your results and consider consulting with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.

i have been using 5% for 1 years 5 months once in a day.
bt sometimes i forget to use in a day or i am too busy to use it. should i be concerned about missing 1 or 2 doses? i have been taking dht blocker along with it regularly.
No missing a day or two here or there is not a big deal
@@WilliamGaunitzTrichologist thank u sir.
if on finasteride I had sides and on minoxidil I had heart palpitations...does that mean I'm screwed? Im just microneedling and using nizoral for now, their working slowing things for sure, but im looking for some drastic change, but dunno what try.
Try topical finasteride and take a look at haircafe channel there’s other options to minoxidil as well
I've been using minoxidil for 6 months, i got forehead wrinkles and dark circles, my nose also looks swollen has anyone faced these problems?
Yeah, it sounds like you're having a contact dermatitis to something. Propylene glycol is a very common irritant that's in minoxidil. I've only seen a handful of true, minoxidil allergies, but you'll know if you have an minoxidil issue because of the very dark circles under your eyes and very definitive swelling.
What happen u continue using it or u stopped using it ??
hey i had minor hair loss not very concerning (slight recession on temples) i started using 2% minoxidil recently for 2 months once daily. didn’t want to use it forever so i decided to stop. decreased frequency to every other day for a month then every 2nd day for a month then every 3rd day, then once or twice a week then finally stopped. do you think my hair is now dependent on it and i will lose hair eventually?
What happened to u please reply
Hi Doctor
Can you please tell me oil ( herbal oil or Ayurveda oil ) application for scalp and hair is it good for hair growth?
I've done a lot of research and found that rosemary, peppermint and jojoba oils mixed together is the best. I do 3 to 4 drops to every table spoon of jojoba oil.
👍👍
Thanks!
How do you figure out what’s the cause of your hair loss?
