I was told that little spring on the float hinge pin was to counter the vibration of the two stoke motors to keep the float up. I've also heard of people that yeeted the spring during disassembly and didn't replace it and had no issues. Ymmv.

So my dad has and still uses an old Toro CCR powerlite with a 3hp 98cc two stroke from the late 90’s (I think) and although we don’t treat er right (starting with with carb cleaner and starter fluid, cheap ethanol 87 octane, and letting it run out of fuel at the end of the season instead of manually draining the gas) it still runs like a champ, even if it doesn’t always like to start (I liken it to a moody teenager who doesn’t want to do work).
Doug in the future. The carb intake is on the back of the carburetor facing the clamshell as you discovered and from behind the first plate you removed you can access the air intake with a straw or a hose.
