Hey, about the fact that "softlocking is bad", well you are technically wrong, sometimes it can be funny to get softlocked and also, it forces the player to start over.

How do you make the see-saw surprise thwomp?

The screen is locked and there is a thwomp just off screen, but you could also get the same effect using a mole and on/off detector that drops a munch on the seesaw.
I'll whip up a short over the weekend to explain better!
