the funny thing is that this wasn't just about keeping the ants in line, but also about keeping his own men in line. the fact that they sugested not going to ant island told him that they were starting to question his leadership, so he put a stop to it right away. two birds with one stone

Bad guys they are, all they care about is party and fun times. Hopper on the other hand was a psychopathic xenophobe who only gave a shit about fatuous oppression. Yes It is fatuous to hold tyranny over an ethnic group. What good does that help?

Hopper is reminding his followers that if it weren't for the ants, they'd be starving, and if they give them the slightest space to think more for themselves and recognize their strength in numbers, everybody's access to food is at stake. They have everything to lose.

It's also implied that he knew the ants weren't collecting the food. I just think that's what makes a great villain when they know that they can be taken out at any time. Kevin Spacey does an amazing job voicing him. He's not only a good example of a physical villain, but a mental villain as well.

What about Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear from Toy Story 3? He turned a daycare into a prison for toys and subjected many toys to be mistreated by toddlers. He brainwashed Buzz into serving him. When Woody and his friends were about to be burned in the incinerator, instead of pressing the button that would save them Lotso abandons them to save himself despite them saving him earlier. Lotso may have had a tragic backstory it is not enough to justify his cruelty. In the end, Lotso became a cruel, nihilistic sociopath who believes love is non-existent and life as a toy is meaningless. The only villains that come close to his level of evil are Hopper, a grasshopper who terrorized an ant colony for power, and Syndrome, who killed off numerous superheroes and sent his omnidroid to attack a city to stage a battle where he triumphs as the hero all because his idol wouldn't let him be his sidekick when he was a kid.

But yes, he is smart enough to know by logic that if one ant rebels, why not hundreds? They have nothing but intimidation to keep them enslaved. And once they lose their fear, they cannot keep them in line. And without them... you know, this is actually a great metaphor for slavery. So they have to keep oppressing them, because even though they are hording all this food, the real factor are the workers. What a monster... but an underrated villain nonetheless.

The thing what stands Hopper out the most in the best way possible to other villains is him knowing an obvious weakness against him or even the fear of the ants rebelling against him
As he said, the ants outnumber his own by hundreds, or even thousands - and keeping them in line through fear and power hiarchy is the best way to maintain that control
But him actually KNOWING that they can rebel as soon as they know they would figure it out, is such a boost of character because most villains just thinks they're unstoppable at any way, but Hopper doesnt, he is completely aware about his weakness and does whatever to make sure it wont come to pass, and him killing his own men just to prove that point is what makes him more intimidating than other Pixar villains

Ricks group (the ants) are forced to work for Negan (Hopper) and the Saviors (the grasshoppers) in order to stay alive. Negan is very similar to Hopper. He uses force and intimidation to get his way and even kills his own ppl to prove a point (like the scene here). He understands that Rick and his group(the ants) are tougher then they let on so is always using submission tactics to keep them in control. Too bad they will fight back and now Negan is worried about losing his power just like Hopper

    • @codename617
      @codename617 Před 6 lety +6

Ryan Curtin I feel that Negan isn't that bad of a bad guy. In the comics when David was about to rape Holly(No Sasha) Negan was infuriated. He condemns rape. He killed Spenser because he thought he was a spineless coward.
He is still a bad guy, though. Killing Glenn (And Abe in the show), tossing grenades onto Alexandria, using Gregory to force the Hilltop out of the war (in the comics he held him hostage and he had influence before Maggie took over.) There's a graphic novel about how Negan became the tyrannical leader of the apocalypse.
I'm just saying that he's bad but just not evil. Not the Gov was evil. More so in the comics.

Rated R for that? I seen more violence in PG movies.

Surprising how well this movie nails the psychology of racism.
Deep down, the most powerful racists know that the people they oppress aren't really inferior. Why else would they work so hard to keep them oppressed and whip up so much hate in their supporters? Because they know if they let up, everyone will realize their whole system is based on bullshit.

This is also why Dictators stomp on any small information against them (Even if its seen as a joke).

    • @joshuakim5240

It's not just racism, but all forms of power dynamic control involving 2 groups (they can be of the same race). Those in power, in the big seats, are always small in number and have to assert control over the larger, less well-off masses by seeming to be much more grand and powerful then they actually are, and use fear to fuel their facades. Dictators do it all the time to their own fellow race groups, racists do it all the time to other races, bullies do it all the time to the weaker people, and politicians do an ironic reversal of this to stoke fear against others while putting themselves on a pedestal.
Fear, fear, fear. It's the ultimate tool of control, but is also a doubled edged sword because the irony of control invoked by fear is that the controller also fears the controlled in their own ways.

Fear is good for keeping control but when one starts to break the system of fear, then more will do the same, and then more and so on till the dictator is overwhelmed and overthrown.
A leader can do anything but if they show any cracks then everyone who sees them will make those cracks bigger

@@slothonmercury he's right though, but it fits more so in the mind set scenarios like the Antebellum South. Wealthy plantation owners were vastly outnumbered not only by slaves but poor whites as well. Establishing a caste system was critical to keeping their economy going and that included keeping people in their respective lines.

    Hopper from A Bug's Life.
    Zurg from Toy Story 2.
    Randall from Monster's Inc.
    Syndrome from The Incredibles
