I hope LTA has done the collision test with the Processing Unit mounted to the footwell. We need to know it will not be a safety hazard that will injure the front passenger in car collision.
Technically, the OBU can also record the driving speed of the vehicle since there is GPS onboard and tracks the lapse time a vehicle enter or leave certain road hence able to fine the driver for speeding or “warn” the driver that he is speeding. Insurance companies will be able to use these data provided by LTA to determine the premium for specific drivers / car owners base on their driving pattern and style. So, the OBU use case has expanded for the LTA. I’m just wondering if it has recorder on the OBU and can record your conversation in the car, or track if you use mobile phones while driving.

I believe there are design house able to miniaturize the design further. but that could bring up the cost of the unit, which might not coincide with the authority budget.
Then for cara with CF centre console etc or soft sides where would the processing unit be placed ??
I think the question that has yet to be answered is why from 1 piece, it becomes 2-3 pcs, not to mention the 2nd piece is placed in such an awkward position. Security wise, how will car owners be able to ensure that their car is safe with the cash card inside? Recall the times when there were incidents where the car windscreens was smashed so as to gain access to the cash card left in the IU. So far there doesn't seem to be much updates on these perspectives. Would appreciate if more information could be given on such matters.
Long story short, they don't care. They implement you just follow. The dialogue is all wayang, and most still don't get it! 😅
With today's advanced tech, it should not be too difficult to integrate the cash card reader/mounting into the optional display unit, right? Even the current IU is smaller compared to this OBU cash card reader.
It's unlikely that authorities will invest time and money into advanced technology when they can outsource the manufacturing of outdated hardware for a cheaper price and then simply install straightforward software upgrades. With full control over the matter, the authorities don't need to explain their decisions, they just need to implement them, and users have no choice but to accept it, even if the product has not passed any associated crash tests by independent bodies. Essentially, people who are powerless have no say in the matter; they either take it or face the strict rule of law.

With the advancement in technology, id expected a better version of what malaysia has done with their stick on tags. this just became even worse than the current IU. User ergonomics wise is bad having it on the passenger side, and also everyone is using waze/gMaps which display traffic congestion and tolls already

First time heard IP65/66/67 rated device cannot be used indoor... really unbelievable that is the reason given by LTA. IF heat is the problem, why not just design a casing with holes/grills to dissipate heat or just add copper heat sink to..
Instead of using their money and resources to solve the outdated coe system, here we are, fixing something that is working fine. Thumbs up to LTA for setting their priorities straight.

Through private companies, somebody has to make money from the motorists on the side. Given that politicians don't have to declare assets or commercial conflicts of interest, you'd never know how pockets on that side of the fence get pockets waxed. 😅

Ugh… I hate that LTA is forcing this abomination down our throats. I definitely won’t be getting the touch screen, such a massive blind spot. Hopefully the processing unit can be installed on the driver side.

Car cabin is hotter under hot sun due to oven effect, bike is relatively cooler cos it's expose all the time.

@@dc5375 then find a solution to overcome the over heating prob~ its seem to me that they create an unpolish product and push the product to us~ will you buy a phone that can only record 5min of 4k video and the manufacturer tell you it due to overheating that's why it has to limit the recording time~? i'm sure some tech co. can come out with a better solution with a smaller OBU~ the first thing is to scrap the cashcard and go for e-wallet~ smartphone has evolve from normal size simcard to microsim to nanosim to esim~ and erp2.0 still stuck with 1st gen cashcard~ 🤦♀

Additionally, they might be benefiting financially through some private company licensed to manufacture these devices. Pockets get waxed. 😅

Time for democracy to work. Send in feeback to LTA for them to review the OBU. Mounting the system on the passenger side is just dumb and of course implementation of the app on our phones to the point where the touchscreen it's unnecessary. It's not the year 2010.

What a crap. The driver has to bend over to the passenger side to insert the card. Where is the sense of user friendliness and safety? By placing this unit at the console area, is it safe during an accident? There is a reason why interior are design in a way with safety in mind and we stuck a piece of crap there. Very disappointing. With today's technology, we would have thought the replacement would be better but no. What a joke.

The antenna can be integrated with the screen holder and the processing unit can be reduced to the size of an iPhone 14. Saying poor heat dissipation is just an excuse, with today's processor technology there are more than enough computational power on an efficient ARM chip. If heat dissipation is truly an issue, then whoever who designed this piece of hardware is not doing their job properly. They should review their design and come up with a better design and not shoved this unsightly ugly mess into cars.

Worst and outdated design. Should have redesign it as technology has already advanced so much from the old time. Instead of using these obsoleted hardware, LTA might as replace the whole hardware with one common and maybe older model (so cheaper) handphone, that is fixed and supplied by LTA.
The screen is just useless. Just develop an app that can mirror using Apple Carplay and Android Auto onto your car's screen. Then you don't need that screen no? Creating electronic waste.

The whole design is screwed up. Cars should retain the one piece design, easier to install and less wiring route behind the dashboard.
Bikes on the other hand, should use the 2 piece design, the cepas card unit can be placed under the bike seat for security and the antenna placed anywhere on the bike for a low profile look. This is what most bikers have to deal with, the ugly IU/OBU spoiling the look of our bikes.
And with technology being so advanced now, the new OBU is LARGER than the older IU. Screwed up design considerations/factors.
