Our today’s interviewee:
Stanisława Imiołek (1923-2022), prisoner of concentration camps in Pustków, Ravensbrück, Sachsenhausen and Oranienburg. At the end of the war, when she was detained at KL Sachsenhausen, a the Allies bombed the city in retaliation for a mass execution of prisoners. The camp was destroyed in the process and the prisoners were able to flee. Stanisława Imiołek and a group of her friends manager to escape, get through a railway bridge across the river, and reach a town. The locals were too afraid to take them in, so the women made their way to the commune office, where they spent the night in a large hall. In the morning, the Gestapo arrived, took the prisoners away and forced them to work. The young women had to clean the debris in the city, and when they fell to the ground because the bricks were too heavy, the guards whipped them mercilessly. Freedom was just around the corner, but they still had to fight to survive another day.
