The Secret of Making a Pattern-Welded Viking Spear

- In the Viking Era, the spear was the most common weapon. It had long range and was much cheaper than a sword. I show all the steps of creating a pattern-welded Viking spear from start to finish including forging the wrought iron socket and all the complicated pattern-welding steps that need to be combined at high temperatures in the forge fire. At the end, I add a shaft and test the spear. This is quite a complicated project and requires a large number of forging steps especially the forming of the wolf tooth pattern that make the original Finnish spearhead from Rovaniemen so famous.
This video is an abbreviated version of the eight videos appearing in my Spear Forged of Fire series. It is also forged in fire :-)
If you want to see more details of the work, you can find it in those individual episodes.

I do not understand how somebody can dislike this video, is has everything. footage of forging, shaping. explanation of each step and commentary explaining stage of the creation step by step.
Excellent work, I especially liked watching the recalescence in action. My brother has started blacksmithing and, after helping him a few times, I appreciate the work you've done here. Truly awesome!
Absolutely beautiful work! You are an artist! This gives me a great impression of what it took back then for my Norse kin to forge them...especially when you used modern techniques. Magnificent
i second anything handcrafted with that much attention and care seems to be a work of art these days that's a two-edged thing its self
I have watched this several times and it never ceases to look deliciously beautiful! Well done!
Damn man. I appreciate how difficult this is. I am envious of your ability. Very well done!
hello there
Friis Forge ù
I really enjoyed watching this spear come together. Such an incredible amount of work! Thank you for sharing.
Man Neil's, I only wish I was closer to you so I could learn in person from you. Your teaching skills are brilliant! As well of course as your blacksmith skills. Bravo Sir, Bravo!
love this video man. like how you explain what youre doing in each step as apposed to just a montage like everyone else.
i liked that you mention that your method of doing the forge weld is what works for you. great work, spear the shalft really complements the pattern welding. keep up the good work.
Amazing. Thanks for narrating too, for those of use who have no clue what you’re doing, it’s nice to have a play by play.
Absolutely magnificent! Your metalwork is amazing. And the wood you used really made this a masterpiece in my book.
I love how you tell your stories! Keep them up, there excellent!
The music brings this whole video together... absolutely masterful work. Thank you for sharing sir
I wish you would invite one of us to be an apprentice.
Much respect for your skills, and the finished spearhead looks amazing!

Niels, exemplary work! The finished weapon is beautiful, a fine piece of craftsmanship. I will look through your library to see past work. Your presentation, and narration make going through the process a pleasure. Keep up the great work! Be well.
Well done. Appreciate what you have shown and how you work from the same conclusions I arrived at. A spearhead is on my project list for the year after some 'hawks and gladii. Thank you for the inspiration.
Really amazing and love the high skilled effort that was put in by both of you
lots of good work for a spearhead
Holy cow, awesome work dude. This is just amazing, I'm definitely going to make one of these as soon as i get a better forge. Awesome work, this is outstanding!!!

WOW, not only amazing technical mastery, your narration to the video was just as captivating. I subscribed instantly :-)
It was great to watch it again in a single streamlined episode.
That was great, it brought the viking out in me and needing one of these for myself Ha! while you start another spearhead allow me to fit a shaft , there is an art to this part as well. tks 4 showing this
Superb , well done . Quality workmanship always speaks for itself .

Beautiful craftsmanship, you did a wonderful job. I would love to own a spear. Maybe I might give it a go. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Lot of work, I would never take you for granted brother.
I love your videos. You had me hooked ever since I watched the "Serpent in the sword" what seems like forever ago.
Gorgeous spear. A work of art, truly.
My gods what a beautifully done piece ❤
This is also the first video of yours that ive seen, and i love the fact that you explain each process thoroughly, and in laymans terms so that people new to forging can understand what you mean!
Again. Incredible work! It came out great in the end, and was a wonder to watch start to finish. I cant wait to finish one of my own in the future!!
Glad you liked it. There is a whole video series on the spear that goes into a little bit more detail.
Well done, clearly structured and explained.
Cool, the pattern is amazing!!

Absolutely lovely. I'll be sure to check out some more of your content.
Amazing job there, who would of know how much work goes into these, what a nice spear in the end. Wolf tooth pattern looks great also.

Wow that was amazing work to see all that went into that it's a piece of art for sure. I collect Viking axe heads.
You've got mad skills. Nice job!
The slow motion makes it seem epic... Then again, it is epic 🤘
Absolutely gorgeous !!
I'm envious I cant make one , I have tried and tried !!
@@NielsProvos I can make gorgeous knives. Cant fold your pattern right.
An amazing project. Well done!! To create something from a thousand years ago must be very fulfilling. I was born in an old Viking village in England. Gainsborough, along the Trent River in Lincolnshire.
Thank you. I am glad you liked it. I grew up close to Viking settlements as well, e.g. Heddeby.
My pleasure, I really appreciated the hard work, talent and historical knowledge that went into this project.
The result looks awesome ... 👍🏽
Beautifully made!
Love the video and the information is great!
Very nicely filmed, as always.
That is an absolute amazing job you did in making that spearhead. Awesome professional work and craftsmanship. I actually think you're a bit too harsh on yourself lol you are very talented.
Very skillful and great pattern.
What a great job on this just amazing
Beautiful work very well explained
Amazing! So cool, what handcraft!!!!
Wow Niels (and Tony). That was impressive. Final product is jaw dropping... and even more so when you see the work that goes into it (well... probably one tenth of the work). Cheers. And btw...I have some ash I'll trade you for wenge :-D
Wow that was just amazing, you really are a master blacksmith
Beautiful work.
This is gorgeous thank you for sharing it with us.
+Harry McLane glad you liked it
very beautiful work my friend
meeen! what a beautifull piece! it came to by like flawless!!
Phenomenal!! I hope it works out on the sword ideal for you. I would like to see that.
Extraordinary. Just extraordinary.
As much work as you put into that beautiful spear head, just think what the viking blacksmiths had to go through to make it without the modern equipment you used..the presses and stuff...even more amazing when you think of that. What talent they had to do such work with only a hammer and forge..no presses, sanders, grinders, etc. Wow.
Exactly
i had always wondered how the socket-blade join was done so cleanly on the historical ones. i forge my spears from a single piece, so i get a section that does not close right at the join.
+Hanaar Steelhand it's supposedly possible with a single piece construction as well but i think the forge welding would be trickier.
Your work is so awesome. Makes me wish I chose a different profession.
I can only hope that one day I have the forging skill to do something like this..Amazing work and skill sir...
+abolith thank you and good luck on your journey
WOW very very nice job Neils. Just loved the Vid TKS
Form follows function...that is a beautiful piece of work...I would love to see how well it would work when taking a 150 to 200 kilo boar hog...I bet that would be a great hunt!
Thank you for a great video.
Ed
In all first world countries bar one killing an animal that way would be a serious criminal offence. And rightly so. We live in the gunpowder era. I'd consider not using the right calibre or a well landed shot to be cruel and improper. The last thing we need is dickheads running around thinking they're fucking Conan the Barbarian spearing animals destroying the sport.
@@bashpr0mpt244 Hunting boar with a spear is quite legal in most of the US, including California btw and Ive done a number of boar that way, including a nice 585lb Russian Boar. (265 kg). For boar hunting..a cross guard 12-18" down from the tip of the blade is almost a requirement. As one stabs or lets a pig charge and impaling themselves on the blade..they will continue to push down the shaft to eat you. (And yes..pigs will gladly eat a human being. We are not talking about Javalina (who also will eat you and comes in packs ). The cross guard prevents the hog from reaching you that way and allows you to keep out of his jaws. Just as historical as can be...and not a sport for the timid or weak. Now that Im old..Id simply prefer to shoot them with arrow or bullet, load them up and be off to the butcher...but that being said...I thought I should inform you of your error. I should further mention that this is far more sporting and humane for both pig and man, than forcing them into a tight chute, chaining their hind legs, hoisting them into the air and then slashing their throats or applying a bolt gun to their skull as they are thrashing around. Sometime man wins...sometimes the pig wins. Ive applied first aid and called in an ambulance more than once on people where the pig won.
Beautiful work
Simply breathtaking
You should change the channel name to God Of The Forge because that's exactly what you are. You have some true skill
Wow and wow. Very well done sir, again.
Great and wonderful work.
great work, had to go back to the start of the vid for the best picture of the finished spear as the end ones dont show the wolf teeth as well
great video mate informative and entertaining
Great work!!
Nice work.
Great video, great craftsman
You sir just got yourself a sub. beautiful spear
Very nice spear, good job!
That was absolutely beautiful. I've always loved to watch artisans share their passion. I'm a woodworker hobbyist but my father was a welder by trade. One thing that I am wondering and maybe you can answer: seeing how difficult it is to make the hollow part to receive to shaft, and having to considerably taper the wooden shaft to fit it in, wouldn't it make more sense to make a tang instead or would that make for a weaker fitting?
I am The Wolfman, and I approve of this wolf toothed spearhead. Ya gotta love the Fins. Never met A Fin I did not like. Peace from Canada.
Beyond brilliant...mastercraftsman
Wouldn't call it a secret. Sacred yes. Excellent work
Have to get potential viewers excited somehow 😜
Excelent work
