The difference between pick-up lines and hugot lines is that pick-up lines are lines you say to get your crush while hugot lines are lines that are sentimental and heartbreaking and always feel like you just got from a break-up. Hugots are very poetic and uses many figurative words to portray a message about love and experiences. It's like you seeing a glue and making a hugot out of it out of the blue.
    For example:
"Pabili po ng glue" (Can I buy a glue)
"Yung kumakapit at hindi bumibitaw" (The one that sticks and never let go)

exactly what I was thinking, seems like they're seeing hugot lines as pickup lines when in fact both are completely different. the other thing is, they're taking it way too literally. Hugot lines, as you've described, is more of poetic. it's interesting tho how they also somewhat got the gist of what is a hugot line as the video progresses.

If it helps, HUGOT does not necessarily mean TO PULL OUT, but rather more of TO DRAW because these lines are DRAWN FROM DEEP EMOTIONS. These emotions are often correlation between an existing situation or condition but interpreted in a more romantic sense that clicks to the person (or people) who can relate to it.

      @artesiningart4961 Před 2 lety +52

Yeah. That's why a lot of context/s or even the entire, whole or all of the context/s of or behind the "hugot" lines should or must be thoroughly explained and be well understood along or together with the contextual and conceptual meanings, and do not just take them or these literally based on the literal meanings of the words, phrases or sentence/s.

  • @LucasEver
    @LucasEver Před 2 lety +106

I like the participants they are really dissecting the meaning behind the hugot line... And I agree hugot lines is not just in the Philippines... They call it cheesy or hook up lines just like what they said and the participants are also hugoteros and hugoteras too... By the way El I like that you set an expectation in the beginning of the video, some will not really appreciate the meaning behind the hugot lines because of the difference in language

  • @solkizziahmeireyescabandi9445

Hugot lines are sentimental words that can make you relate. Pick up lines are words that make you feel 'kilig' or the tingles/butterflies in the stomach. That's the big difference. Both can be cheesy at times tho, depending on word choice and delivery 😆.

I was trying to translate the original phrases as I was watching for my own enjoyment and I felt a little sad that there's a lot of sentimentality lost in translation 🥲 I'd like to share my personal take on each line:
    1. A crush is like a math problem; if you can't get them, just stare at them.
    2. Please clear your ears... so you could hear the beating of my heart.
    3. Love is like paying the jeepney fare... sometimes, you get shortchanged.
    4. Someday, I dream of piloting a plane... so I can pick up the people who were left hanging [in their relationships].
    5. Go for a check-up at the doctor's, seems like your sight's blurred; you keep on searching for "the one" when I'm already here [in front of you].
Overall, hugot lines are meant to be highly emotional-depending on the context and delivery of the lines, they can come across as anywhere from heartbreakingly sad when stated unironically to gut-bustingly hilarious when uttered overdramatically. They're not QUITE exactly like pickup lines, but they're certainly useful for proving wit and humor when timed properly too!

I've never heard of these hugot lines -‐ aren't there more famous ones? It really isn't the same when translated - it just loses its "hugot" feels!
The movies "One More Chance" and "That Thing Called Tadhana" had the best ones!
    ----
Mace: “Gaano katagal bago mo siya nakalimutan?”
    Anthony: “Matagal.”
Mace: “Gaano nga katagal? One year? Two? 3? 4? 5?”
Anthony: “Importante pa ba ‘yun? Ang mahalaga, nakalimutan."
    - "That Thing Called Tadhana"
    -----
Popoy Gonzalez in "One More Chance":
"She had me at my worst. You had me at my best. Pero binaliwala mo ang lahat... and you chose to break my heart."

For them to get the joke, they have to relate at the metaphor. They're relating it too much on the 'love'. or some of the jokes are somewhat cultural like some transportation here doesn't really give out changes and filipinos relate cuz they've experienced it multiple times. We laugh at it now. But I don't think that happens in other countries that much. 😂 Oh and the hugot lines are weird when you translate them 😅 Nice reactors tho. Great personalities! As a filipino, hugot lines is like a contest on who is more corny. It is like who is the best in relating love to anything that happens on a day to day mundane things. It is different from pick up lines because pick up lines is to get the attention of your loved one. While hugot line is an emotion expressed through language because of heartbreak. Like for ex. You just broke up with your ex, you are so sad that you start relating everything to love in the saddest but poetic way possible.

✌🏼😅🇵🇭 Most of them most likely or seemingly didn't or appears that they didnt get the context of this "hugot" line translated in or into English:
"Can you clean your ears? So you can hear the beating of my heart!"
"To have dirty, stuffed or waxy ears" here in this context means a person or individual is emotionally, socially, mentally, romantically and/or especially empathetically numb or is apathetic, indifferent, unconcerned, detached, uninterested, unmoved, unresponsive, passive, impassive, uninvolved, emotionless, disinterested, uncaring, unemotional, halfhearted, dispassionate, unfeeling or lukewarm to or for someone else's emotions, feelings, care, concern, interest, friendliness, kindness, thoughtfulness, actions, acts of service, gifts, sacrifices, sincerity, truthfulness, loyalty, honesty, trustworthiness, endearment, affection, fondness, tenderness, liking, warmth, passion, respect, closeness and especially love, and not the literal meaning of physically, really or actually having such dirty, stuffed or waxy anatomical and physiological ears.
"To hear the beating of the heart", on the other hand, here in this context means being able to have or having feelings, emotions, sympathy, care, interest, response, passion, sensitivity, concern or especially empathy, understanding and/or reciprocation to someone else's emotions, feelings, care, concern, interest, friendliness, kindness, thoughtfulness, actions, acts of service, gifts, sacrifices, sincerity, truthfulness, loyalty, honesty, trustworthiness, endearment, affection, fondness, tenderness, liking, warmth, passion, respect, closeness and especially love, and not the literal meaning of physically, really or actually hearing or even listening to the beatings of the anatomical and physiological heart.

The "left in the air" hugot, maybe it meant like, saving those who are experiencing it because you don't want another person to get left out or be ghosted coz that really hurts. Not necessarily be the ONE for them.

Hugot Lines are like the anti-thesis to pickup lines actually. If for pickup lines you still have the bullet in your gun ready to fire, hugot lines are for when you already shot and you completely missed. "Hugot" refers to drawing from a sad experience, usually in your romantic life.
Honestly, I think the lines are cringe-worthy most of the time. I like it better when it's used in a light-hearted and/or funny situation. Like, something so ridiculously mundane suddenly turns into existential crisis for some reason. When it leaves me dumbfounded and then makes me laugh right after. For example,
A: "CZcams video quality is on Auto by default so it adjusts and will lower the resolution when your internet slows down."
B: "Wow, how thoughtful. At least CZcams is willing to adjust to my needs. Others just neglect me."

The thing with hugot lines is that it's not supposed to be "sentimental" but truthful/realistic to the point it's funny. It's not supposed to be taken seriously, more like those funny life memes.

Thanks for this video bro, I hope as a Negrense or a Filipino born in Negros that pick up lines and hugot lines will be thought deeply by foreign people because it's very different hehehe
    It's like this as example
'Sa panaginip ko sana numiro ako sa iyo
( to my dream I hope I'm a number to you)
isang milyung man kasi ang lumabas malapit sa iyo, 0 ang buhay ko pagwala ka
( a million might be go out near to you, my life is zero without you
Hugut line was deep line of idea to be portray to other. Mostly it hurts

      Floorwax ka ba? (Bakit?)
      Kasi gusto kita.
