- In this video I discussion the corrosion issue which affects JL Wranglers & Gladiators and how to inspect for the problem. There is a 5 year corrosion and paint warranty on the panels, and if you don't get it repaired within 5 years from the in service date your could have over 20K in out of pocket expenses.

We had our 2020 Wrangler Unlimited repaired under warranty last year. All four doors, hood and tailgate. So far it looks great.
Awesome.
My hinges started corroding on my 2014 JKUR. I pulled them apart, cleaned them up and masked and primed the unpainted door panels. I primed and repainted the hinges with flat black epoxy paint, added a gasket layer and sealed with clear silicone. 5 years later they still look great.
Yep.. that'll do it. That's really what they should be doing as a fix. Leaving that body panel unpainted is not good.
thx alote for this huge information .Appreciated for ur time and the share to take care of my new jeep .
No problem. Love helping.
Thank you for this video!
You are so welcome!
My 2020 rubicon is in process now. They are replacing the hood and doors completely and repainting the tailgate. They said jeep fixed the hinge issue in 24 but didn't say anything about the door and hood. It's garage kept, washed all the time and has 34000 miles. I asked about trading up and they want 33000. My 3rd and last jeep.
We just purchased a pre-owned 2020 Wrangler a few days ago (on the solstice actually) and we never noticed this because it doesn't manifest like the corrosion of steel.
I just went out to inspect our rig, and sure enough! There are a couple spots beginning to form!! I am feeling kinda scammed here.
Luckily it appears to be in a very nip-it-in-the-bud early phase.
Thank you for posting this.
Glad I could help. Something everyone with a JL needs to keep an eye on. Good luck !!
To be fair, a 2020 wrangler won't last long enough for corrosion to matter
This is really useful. I live in the PNW and looking for a JT diesel. Needless to say we have a lot of moisture here. Thank you.
Yeah, the new zinc shims might help a bit. Love the diesel's..
These jeep designers are some of the brightest minds in the business
Yeah.. sucks.
your right!
Good information. I knew about this before watching your video but since I live in the Arizona desert I didn't think much of it. I have a roof rack on the Wrangler so I don't take it to a car wash. I wash it by hand. So, maybe it will be a non issue for me but now I know about running my finger along the panels by the hinge so thanks.
You Bet. not much corrosion here in Vegas as well.
The Garage Studio Hello Friend New subscriber here keep up the good work 🇺🇸🇺🇸😃😃💪💪👍👍
Thanks for the sub. Appreciate it. Will do !!
Its a GALVANIC CORROSION problem with the mating of dissimilar metals. If you electrically isolate the alum from the carbon steel, the corrosion stops; a nonmetallic gasket between the hinge and the door and nonmetallic bolts or some way to isolate the bolt holes (electrically).
We disagree. But.. I hope Jeep eventually finds a way to fix it.
There is no dissimilar metals. The hinges are aluminum and the doors are aluminum.
@@AustinH7 What are the BOLTS?
@@AustinH7 Connected to the carbon steel door frame with carbon steel bolts....No?
I have a 2016 Wrangler Unlimited 4 door and while washing it I saw what your speaking about sad stuff😢 only have it on Driverside rear.Damn
The JK's don't have the same issues as they use steel body panels. But.. they can still have rust/corrosion from the bare steel panel under the hinge.
Let's admit it the factory knew about all these problems with the Jeeps by not preparing these surfaces properly to begin with Cause and all of these corrosion issues !! Which is unacceptable from the factory of them being cheaply built !!! Even a good body shop can tell you about these problems !! But with European Stellantis Company in charge now good luck !!😤😤🤬🤬🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️👎👎👎
I doubt they knew about this issue when manufacturing was getting rolling. Problem is having to retool and make changes after the production line starts would be very expensive. But, they should have bit the bullet and just made the changes. Their pissing off their most loyal customers.
Two dissimilar metals in contact will cause this. Does the same thing to boat motors which is why they put a zinc anode on the motor as it is a sacrificial material that can be easily replaced but will take the corrosion and spare the aluminum .
That's one thought, but I respectfully disagree. If that was the case corrosion would be the same regardless of the location. In the Southwest you see very little corrosion, but back east, and if you saw my video the Hawaiian special shows it has more to do with the environment and the humidity and moisture getting into contact with the bare aluminum panels than the galvanic corrosion theory.
@@The.Garage.Studio Ah but remember Hawaii is an island surrounded by ocean and in the north east they use a lot of road salt in winter. The key is the salt. Just like a boat in the ocean. Boats in fresh water do not corrode nearly as fast or as bad as those in the salt water. So vehicles in the southwest are a long way from the environmental effects of the salt. As you mentioned in your video the 2025 jeeps have a zinc plate between the steel hinge and the aluminum door panel. That is the buffer just as the zinc anode is on salt water fishing boats. Also as you noted keeping your jeep clean is a huge help. We tend to use car washes regularly here in New England to wash away the salt. The carwashes even have undercarriage washers to help remove the salt on the frames and drive trains.
I reported the roughly 20 spots on my wife's 18 JL right before the 5 year warranty expired. Almost a year later it still hasn't been fixed and the dealership stopped responding to my inquiries.
As long as this is documented, find another dealer or call jeep cares.
This problem is ridiculous considering the cost of the vehicle.
I agree.
Your not complete in your explanation. It's galvanic corrosion. It's when two (or more) dissimilar metals are brought into electrical contact with water.
There's quite the debate about that. Given all the corrosion on the bottom of the body panels where there is no dissimilar metals kinda goes against the galvanic corrosion theory. Either way, it's an issue. Just hoping the fix lasts (i.e., replacing the panels, replacing the hinges). I purposely left out the galvanic corrosion discussion.
Not galvanic corrosion. Poor prep at the factory
blame it on your fine government. they are forcing automakers to meet a MPG rating. Jeeps are heavy because of the full axles front and rear, so they had to put an aluminum body and doors to keep the weight down but keep steel hinges which cause Galvanic Corrosion from Dissimilar Metals (steel/aluminum) contacting each other.
I have a 2018 JLUR and live in a wet climate but I haven't had a problem with mine.
Yeah, that's debatable. I believe it's the moisture that's causing the corrosion on the aluminum panels, not galvanic corrosion. Galvanic corrosion doesn't explain all the other corrosion coming from the panels not near the hinge.
Yep I have it. On the door hinges and bottom side of passenger door. It sucks but I bought it pre owned and I already knew about it. Unfortunately it’s out of warranty with almost 80k miles and 5 years old
Well, at least you were aware of the issue beforhand. Good luck with it.
Thank you for the información
You bet.
Long live the AMC CJ …
I bought mine in 1989 , a 1982 cj7 . It came from the AL coast and didn’t have corrosion like that . I’m actually looking at buying a gladiator but I’m turned off by stuff like this , engine included. I really wanted one but seriously do not want to buy something that will need body panels in just a few years . As bad as AMC was in paint and body my original 1982 paint is protecting way better . These newer Jeeps may as well be a Datsun , remember those vehicles? They started corroding off of the assembly line and rusted out in a short time . Wow thanks for your in depth video , I will not buy one .
The JL wrangler is so awesome in so many was, just a couple of issues. Hopefully they get it figured out.
I just bought a 23 Gladiator new off the car lot in May of this year. Its production date was Sept of 2023. It has 2024 characteristics (which even Jeep said it would or does). Hoping I never have this problem.
Me too. Hopefully the updated hinges help.
I had it on the Door & Zjeep had it repaired
Nice.. Thanks for commenting and sharing.
I jus got rid of my ’21 Wrangler.I really hated to do it but no way I was going to go through this.Last Jeep for me
That's sad.
I just notice paint chipped off a door hinge on my 2021. It looks a lot like the pictures your showed. I guess I better start the process
Look really close. Ideally you can find it on all the panels and get it fixed once and for all.
My 2020 Gladiator was covered. Got the hood and 2 doors covered. My girlfriend’s 2018 JLUR has it bad. Need to replace the hood, all hinges, all 4 doors and the tailgate. Not under warranty. Estimate is over $15k. Jeep cares is extending the warranty for us. We have to pay a $2500 deductible
Wow, that's really cool that Jeep is helping you with that. It sucks that this problem is happening, but at least there trying to help out customers.
My 21 Jeep Gladiator has a small area of corrosion on the lower portion of the front passenger door. I’m currently in the process of having the corrosion issue taken care of by my local dealership.
Thanks for sharing. Good luck with the process.
Thank you for this information. Every time I hear about this issue, I wonder what kind of company this is. I own a Jeep, but this issue makes me nervous. Even if it's covered under warranty, it's a waste of time. They knew about the issue but made zero effort to remediate it. Coverage under warranty is not enough; it should be covered for at least 10 years, if not more.
I agree.
@@The.Garage.Studio My question is about my 2023 car. I applied rust protection coating underneath and injected it inside the doors, but I am not sure if this procedure will protect my Jeep from corrosion. Do you know what else can be done to prevent it? Does painting the inside door hinges or doing something similar help prevent corrosion?
@@johnshirbini5801 One of the things jeep is asking dealers to do is to apply cavity wax after repaining the jeep with the repairs, so you could consider that - anything to keep moisture away from the aluminum panels. I'd also wash the car yourself and ensure the hinges and the doors are nice and dry. I would not leave it outside if possible, always garage it. And if you do have rain, possibly wipe it down. Here's a video on the wax. If you haven't already, join the corrosion facebook group - czcams.com/video/ihxT2wanEhA/video.html
Talk about how JL wrangler bumpers are made with a soybean-based product and are being chewed/eaten by Squirrels!
Now that's a video i'd watch !!
I have an 18 JL and every door, hinge, hood and tailgate have this corrosion. My Jeep has been taken care of since new but its embarrassing to drive at this point. Tried to trade it in due to the corrosion but every dealership mentions the extensive bubbling throughout. Even one door that was repaired by the Jeep dealership has corroded again.
Since you are the original owner, and already taken it in for repairs, I feel that jeep cares might extend your warranty. I would give them a call directly to try and get it extended. It sucks, but I think you may have a case. Good luck. Sorry.
Land Rover (the original vehicles going back to 1948 well prior to the birth of the DEFENDER) used aluminum bodies since their original prototypes. Bi-metal corrosion was (and may still be) a major problem with Land Rover and "Land Rover's" products. The Land Rover, again meaning the original vehicles starting in 1948, used thin sheet steel for their chassis frames. Those frames have a terrible corrosion problem. The Jeep Wrangler JK's (and probably JL's) use thicker gage steel than the old "Series" Land Rovers did. I drove Land Rovers from 1964 to 1993. I washed all my Land Rovers frequently after being on salted roads and even after driving in salt water. I never personally had a frame rust out on me. I am well aware of this problem, however, having spent about 15 years in the Land Rover business. Wash your vehicle frequently; don't drive in salt water unless absolutely necessary. I've had a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (JK) Rubicon since taking delivery of it in April 2012. No major rust issues on my Jeep as of 23 June 2024. Andrew McKane IV, Maunaloa, Molokai, Hawaii.
Nice. Thanks for sharing.
I love my JL but this is exactly why I’ll never get rid of my 2010 JK
Or get rid of my 2005 TJ/LJ Rubicon or 97 Sahara.
So many improvements on the JL.. too bad there are some issues with them. I love mine.
I’m in Hawaii and yes, I do have that issue 😕😕
Yep.. Lots of moisture and salt
My 2007 has bubbles on the hinges saw it too late . Bought new in2007 has not broken through yet
2007?
The jk’s have been doing this since 07
Thanks for sharing. It's a little different, but jeeps have always had some issues with rust.
I got it on my Hood
Try and get it in asap.
Hi, Daryl (please correct me if I heard wrong)! I have a bit off-topic question, but you mentioned it in the video. You live in Las Vegas, and I am new here. Do you happen to know a good car wash service here where they wash cars by hand without those pressure washers?
P.S. loooove all your videos, binged in two days :D My lovely 2003 Acura CL Type-S is dying, well not the car - this thing is immortal, but the transmission, which is the same price as the car >_< Couples days ago, got stuck in the middle of the desert on the way to LA and understood, that this car is not reliable anymore for long drives, especially in the heat. And so I am getting ready to finally allow myself my dream car - Wrangler! I am considering leasing for a couple of reasons - since I had only one and very old car - I really want to experience all those luxury add-ons that Jeep offers, plus a brand-new car feel :) Leasing is cheaper, and all the repairs will be covered by it, which is good while I am getting to know a completely new car!
Hey there neighbor. Sorry, I don't. I've lived here forever, but don't use car washes often. And now that I know about this corrosion, will only be hand washing my Bikini Pearl (Summer Vibes is her name)!! Thanks for watching my videos.. appreciate it !! I wouldn't lease, it will always end up costing you more. Anyhow, good luck with whatever you decide. There is a really nice off-road jeep club called Desert Wranglers. Haven't went out with them you, but you should check them out. They do runs all the time. They have a lot of real knowledgeable jeepers. Also.. I've got a growing facebook group called Wrangler Jeeping (For Beginners), check that group out. I do my best to keep things civil..
I bought my 2020 Wrangler in July 2023. I was completely unaware of this issue. I first noticed it in November 2023 and immediately made a claim under warranty. They need to replace my hood, doors, and tailgate. I’ve been waiting since Nov 2023 and the dealership just told me it will be at least another year or more before they can get to mine. I absolutely love my Wrangler but I’m trading my Jeep in next week and I will never buy a Wrangler again.
Its not going to affect the integrity though. Aluminum corrosion is not rust
That's so sad.
True.
@@humorsswhat does that mean? What if bubbles spread and it’s all over the place? I guess it wont corrode but it’s not really a sight for sore eyes
@@nemomilo333 yes very unsightly expecially with colorful paint
What if you don't have any corrosion at this time but will have it at some point in the future due to this issue? Is Jeep covering preventive corrosion issues?
They cover it for 5 years.

I am not an engineer, but I know enough to mix dissimilar materials or you get galvanic corrosion.
Yeah, that is one of the theories.
There is literally no dissimilar metals touching. What part of the Jeep do you think has dissimilar metal touching?
@@AustinH7 hinge is steel and door is not. either way, that's the reason why jeeps put aluminum foil on the new part number.
They didn't learn anything from the Defender era.
So sad.
That is not corrosion, that is a smart product, green recycling composition "save the earth" activated design.
That's funny.
It's a Jeep thing
We should expect better.
Rust is a Jeep thing. You wouldn't understand....
I understand rust fine. I don't understand why this has been going on for 6 years without fully resolving. We're not lemings are we?
One key issue not covered in enough depth was what does the dealer do to correct the issue, and more importantly, what's going to prevent it from happening again? Also, it'll help your appeal if you'd trim the chest hairs back a bit. Not only is it unattractive, but it's particularly off-putting to most women. Sounds silly, but it'll help your subscription rate.
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah.. gotta trim that chest hair for sure. For the most part the dealer will. hopefully replace all the aluminum panels and replace the hinges with the new style that adds the zinc plate. No guarantee though it won't come back, but it is what it is.
My 2011 gx460 off road /overland build - not a spec of rust ehh shop smart or

Yeah.. someone else mentioned that aw well.. LOL>>>

I still love my jeep.
Jeep supposedly installed zinc plates between the door and hinge on newer builds.
Yep. I mentioned 2024 models had these. Not sure when exactly the model year they started adding these.
@@The.Garage.Studio mid 2023 and up if I'm not mistaken. Also the new part number got the zinc plates when you repair under warranty to help prevent other claims (DealerConnect information)
