The legendary Chelsea Hotel, an icon of 1960s counterculture and a haven for famous artists and intellectuals including Patti Smith, Janis Joplin and the superstars of Warhol's Factory, is under renovation. Soon it will reopen to the public as one of New York's most fashionable luxury hotels. Dozens of people, most in their later years, still live amidst the scaffolding and constant construction. Against this chaotic backdrop, the film takes us through the hotel’s storied halls, exploring its living body and the bohemian origins that contributed to its mythical stature. Its residents-casualties of capitalism-and the walls themselves now face a turning point in their common history.
Directed by Amélie van Elmbt and Maya Duverdier

This is what New York City allows. They're doing it to the Chelsea & they've done it to a building on West 4th that New York University owns -- in order to make room for new dorms they tore down a building where Edgar Allan Poe had written The Raven. (That's what I was told by neighborhood people).
The prohibition-era tavern Chumley's Pub -- a speakeasy -- (established in 1922 & closed for good in 2020) on Bedford Street was legendary as a watering hole for many renowned authors -- both the Lost Generation (Hemingway) & the Beat Generation (Kerouac) for decades. It had a creative atmosphere.
It had to sign outside. Unmarked. You had to know it was through the ornate 86 door. Now, I know the chimney collapsed and that's what closed the building for many years. But how can a chimney collapse? No building inspections? No warnings? The owners didn't check things like that, or clean them? Chimney sweeps would notice if bricks were loose or if the lining was bad.
Well, when it reopened almost 9 years later Chumley's was modernized. Now it's closed because few loyalists went back. They just don't care about preservation or history. There are many more like these buildings. People shouldn't have to fight for this, the politicians need to step up and say wait before a wrecking ball comes. But the almighty dollar rules -- not the dollar that's made because of these changes but the dollar that lines pockets. The dirty money.
What's next? The White Horse Tavern? Washington Square Park. The home (also on Bedford Street) of Edna St. Vincent Millay?

I love old hotels with history and beautiful architecture but unless there's structural issues such as damage due to fire, etc it's just a shame to tear them down and " renovate".
I didn't hear him say once that he actually knew Janis Joplin he was merely making reference to what he knew OF her.

1:21 This guy fought no fight. Like the majority of tenants, he sat out the fight for many years as guest rooms that didn't affect him were desecrated. It is offensive for him to pretend he did something to save the "old" Chelsea while giving it over to developers to destroy. This entire film is a charade financed by the hotel and produced by the business partner of one of the owners' business partners. Pure fantasyland and magical thinking, pretending real protests didn't happen. They did. This guy just didn't take part.
