If you're new to my channel and videos, hi! I'm Evan Edinger, and I make travel vlogs of all the exciting places I visit. I started travel vlogging about 8 years ago because I wanted to see more of the world and be able to watch back some of my adventures. I also make weekly comedy videos every Sunday on my main channel usually revolving around funny differences between British vs American things! Anyway, thanks for stopping by!

Pro tip: your ratcheting screwdriver (or "clicky clicky" if you will) can take Hex bits to put together IKEA furniture. So much easier than those stupid L shaped Allen keys

Most drills these days have screw driver “clutch” where you can select a certain torque that it stops turning so you can’t over-tighten screws. I would highly recommend using these or an electric screwdriver - especially if you have lots to build. It will make it so much quicker and save your wrists.

Hey - fellow recent new build purchaser here! In terms of drilling and hanging I highly recommend you get a stud finder before you go putting in holes anywhere. I think the one I have was £25 and can check for studs, pipes, metal etc. I’d also recommend you pick up some good filler, a filler knife and trade white paint because you will make a few mistakes along the way and I find that I’m a lot less anxious when prepared! Don’t forget that some things can be “no more nailed” into place like bathroom fixings etc. Glad to see your place come together and as a design graduate it’s great to hear that you’re getting into interior design! If you’re into mid century - eBay is a great place to find unique pieces and a lot of the time they’re actually based in / around London. Can’t wait to see it all come together! 😁

Hey Evan, not sure if anyone commented already but TV licencing is for anything that you would be watching live. Basically, it means that anything you would be watching live streamed whether on your laptop or tv would be under tv licencing. As long as youtube premiere doesn't have 'live' sign on it you can watch it without a tv licence. If you wish to watch anything on bbc iplayer whether live or on demand you will need tv licence. Funny thing is that they don't have authority to enter your home and as long as you say that you do not watch live tv you are good. They do try to check it occasionally, but since you are living in an apartment building, it might be a bit hard for them to check your flat directly. :)

A word of warning from a friend that lived in a flat with he same setup as you (he live in a victorian nurse housing block that got coverent into flats ~ also it was listed building)... after a few years his ground rent went up and up and up and him and his wile had to sellup and move out because that bill was more than his mortgage payments. Scotland has a cap and law about these type of payments/bills where in England it is totally unregulated and there been cases owners of the building putting the ground rents up 1000%+ just to drive out people that moved in due to the fact X% of the development had to be social housing and they did not agree with the current law or the people that moved in.

ikea tip - you can order spare parts like screws and fixings for free!

  • @Alcogod
    @Alcogod Před 2 lety

The probable reason your normal screwdriver stripped the screw head is because they are different. One is a "Philips" (with 4 points) and the other is a "Pozidriv" (with 8 points, 4 big and 4 small). The actual angle of the screwdriver splines is different meaning the Philips is loose in a Pozidrive screw head and therefore it strips them. If you don't have a Posidriv to hand however one quick fix is the grind about 1mm off the end of a Philips (you can use a brick on an exterioor wall or something) so it sits further in the screw head and gives it that extra grip.

Your desk looks a lot like mine, but I suppose these adjustable-height desks all look very much alike. But they are great.
BTW: In Germany, you have to have a licence if you have any kind of device in your home that would allow you to listen to the radio or watch television, regardless of whether you actually do so. That includes computers with internet access. So yes, virtually everyone is required to pay for a licence. Whether they do or not is a completely different question!

I don't have to pay because I'm on benefits but my flatmate has to pay still so I still kind of have to pay for that stupid license because it would be unfair not to share that expense.
Absolutely ridiculous we don't watch tv and only use sites like Netflix and don't use the öffentlichrechtliche Sender online either.
I think it should be free or at least you should be able to get out of paying it easier. Like just block access to those sites and those tv channels if I don't pay I don't care. I don't listen to the radio either and with how much money they get every year and somehow they still want more I understand why so many people are angry.

You miss out, there are a lot of fantastic docus out there (Arte).

Highly recommend getting a wobble board for your standing desk, to keep circulation going (I like the ones that are basically a curved board with bumps to massage your feet... you can keep it very still when needed or can wobble back and forth). It makes you a couple inches taller, so the extra height on the desk would be useful!

Hello! Your episode popped into my feed and I have a couple of suggestions that you might find useful. I’m female and very handy with my tools… first up, buy yourself a stud finder and a level to make sure you know if you’re drilling into a stud or just sheet rock. Measure and re-measure ‘till you’re 99.9 percent sure you have your mirror located where you want it to be. To avoid pencil marks on your walls, place a piece of masking tape where you need to mark and draw a line using your level to guarantee everything is straight. If you are truly uncomfy with drills and such, don’t force yourself to do it, just find a friend you know is handy, buy him/her lunch and done! Not everyone needs to be handy, do what makes you most comfy and happy! Good Luck and Enjoy! 😊

Pro tip, Hex keys can be used long ways too. much easier to spin the screw using the opposite end first and then crank with the long arm. Also check out blackbeltbarrister, he has done many videos on the TV license from a legal perspective. Live youtube is ok if it isn't broadcast on TV at the same time essentially. rewind TV is fine also, so catch up. The license only covers LIVE TV on whatever platform it is broadcast on. The only rewind you can't watch is iPlayer.

I feel for you Evan with figuring stuff out but I am laughing at how entertaining it would be to see you go through everything I've done in the past six months.
Best advice a friend gave me, houses are very modular, if you break something it's easy enough to fix. In general for online viewing with the TV licence.
You need it for catchup services like iplayer.
You don't need it for CZcams, with the exception of where it's being used as a catchup service.
You need it for services where the broadcaster is treating it as a linear broadcast not just a livestream (so think it it like the UK Parliament twitch channel, or when Channel 4 broadcasts Formula E on CZcams)
You don't need it to watch livestreams from normal streamers (so if you were streaming, we wouldn't need to have a licence to watch you)
The whole livestream thing is a huge grey area. There's no real definition over what constitutes a TV service vs a livestream broadcast,

You only need the TV license if you are watching live "broadcast" TV (I realise it's no longer technically broadcast, but like if you hooked up a Freeview box) or if you are using the BBC iPlayer online for anything live or streaming later. Interestingly, you don't need the license to watch iTV player or any of the other online players that have a live option, so you wouldn't need it to watch CZcams.

I like the BBC in theory but haven't had a licence for 8 years, it wasn't worth it for me once they gave up F1 - I'm not paying £150 a year to watch Dr Who. I no longer tell Capita that I don't need a licence (I object to having to keep telling them after years) and am waiting to see if they ever turn up at my door. So far I just have hundreds of slightly threatening letters.

I couldn't believe it was a possibility that the TV licence would cover CZcams, but I checked anyway. Unbelievably it does, they specifically list CZcams:
"The law says you need to be covered by a TV Licence to:
*watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV, on any channel
*watch or stream programmes live on an online TV service (such as ITV Hub, All 4, CZcams, Amazon Prime Video, Now TV, Sky Go, etc.)
*download or watch any BBC programmes on BBC iPlayer."

The licence fee is just for all television I'm pretty sure...like owning a TV makes you legally have to pay it..although contrary to popular belief the law isn't actually enforced.

You tube lives aren’t covered by TV license. You need Tv license to watch any live broadcast TV (recieved over TV frequencies) and for BBC iPlayer live streaming and BBC iPlayer on -demand. But you can watch other broadcasters catch up with out a license.

@@channul4887 - sorry let me clarify. You don’t need a license to watch a random CZcamsrs live stream. You only need one if the live stream you are watching via CZcams is also being broadcast on traditional TV.
This is the exact wording from the TV licensing website….
“Do I need a TV Licence to watch CZcams?
You don’t need a TV Licence to watch videos or clips on demand on CZcams. But you do need a TV Licence if you watch TV programmes live on CZcams. An example of this would be watching Sky News live. But it isn’t just live news or sport which needs a licence - it’s any programme which is part of a TV channel, broadcast or transmitted for everyone to watch at the same time.”

@@channul4887 just google it, you will have the tv licence page saying the same
If something is transmitted on TV and CZcams at the same time you need the licence
It doesn't matter if something is live or not, tv might show a prerecorded channel. What does matter is that something is transmitted to the tv receivers "live" meaning at the same time.
If your CZcams live stream, is not transmitted to any tv channel at the same time, it is all good
But if BBC will decide to play this video and broadcast it and you will watch it at the same while BBC viewers were watching it, you will need a tv licence

    Tv license and viewing CZcams……
Watching a normal everyday vloger is fine, the tv license covers companies that have a broadcast license from the government.
So it would only be needed if you were watching something live from one of those companies, which would be very rare if ever…..
