  • What a surprise! A water mite jumped into view, and stayed quite active on my microscope slide. I thought it was a spider, but only saw 6 legs.
Water mites are tiny water bugs (Hydrachnidia) are closely related to ticks and spiders, but they are swimmers. They are among the most abundant, diverse and ecologically important arthropod group inhabiting lakes, ponds, marshes, swamps, streams and rivers. Their legs come equipped with rows of swimming hairs to propel the mites through the water.
