- When planning to visit Italy, I was so excited to go to the region of my favorite Italian wine. The Piedmont region produces some of the best Italian wines from Chardonnay, to Moscato, to Barolo there is something for everyone. We had planned a road trip from Venice to Asti in hopes to see spectacular Italian views and visit some one the best vineyards.
We did have a bit of trouble with our rental car. Unfortunately when renting a car overseas I always run into issues and I was not the only one. It was a bit of a disaster but not something we couldn't move past after paying extra money. :(
I hope to help with that situation for others when they want to get a rental car overseas.
Leave a comment of your rental tips and how to avoid these situations.

Hi Ash I just wanted to comment that I'm so sorry you had hours and hours of stress over the rental. Scammers are the worst! It was nice of you to give a heads up to the girls in front of you also getting scammed. I cannot wait to see your Moscato trip and roadtrip around Italy.
Tell me about your rental car experiences. Am I the only one running into issues?!?? Any tips??
no its terrible process but they get away with it. because they know we are at their mercy.
Oof, got hit hard with the insurance in Ireland. They told me they needed a letter from the credit card company per Irish law.
I had a really bad experience in Puerto Rico at a small local car rental place. When I booked it, it was very cheap and seemed easy enough but when I got there they had all these hidden fees and tried to up-charge me 800 dollars or something like that because my insurance wasn’t full coverage.. they were taking forever also definitely felt like they were trying to scam! I said screw it and took a n Uber back to the airport and just went with budget. Super quick and easy and very cheap. No hidden fees! Maybe it’s best to try and go with big corporate companies like budget in foreign countries because I’ve heard other horror stories about local ones other places too. Glad you got it figured out Ash! Great video!! ❤
OMG. I just went through a similar rental car ordeal in Germany. The guy at the rental return checked the car in over an hour later than I returned. Fortunately I had taken a picture of the dash with the mileage, full tank, AND time. The rental car firm tried to charge me for an extra day. I would advise taking photos before and after, both inside and out. I also asked for a small car but after fighting with them, I drove a SUV. The smaller cars are so much better for gas and mileage (gas is SO expensive) and easier to park and manage in old picturesque towns. It was the worst rental ever as there were other issues. I was so surprised as it was a rental company I had used before. Never again. Germany, during the holiday season, was wonderful though.
I believe u
I feel like it's so much less stressful to just jump on a train or join a bus tour, although obviously you have a lot less freedom
Excellent tips and would love a video on renting a car. We rented a car in Athens, they TRIED, but I had researched and brought everything we needed including international driver’s license and took lots of pictures and insisted that an employee be with us for car inspection ON camera! I have a great Maui experience & link, I’ll DM you.
Jordan…did you guys meet in Spain? So nice to have a friend to travel with.
Great video looking forward to more of Italy! 💖~Cara
That country… so beautiful it hurts!
Loved this adventure 😊 Looks like you had lots of fun and sorry about the rental car 🙃 ugh I hate when that happens
Liked a lot when showing the vineyard from the car, and the background music when showing the cathedral.
Hello Ash how have u been?. Is great to see u doing well in Italy. I am very sorry to hear about your bad rental car experience there! Yes as a tourist we really need to be very careful wherever we travel to avoid ourselves from getting scam! But anyway thank u so much for sharing with us your bad rental car experience and also thank u for the renting car tips when we travel in other countries.
I totally agree with your advice about taking pictures of any issues with a rental car. I think a video is even better. I enjoyed watching the wine tour and tasting.
Thanks for sharing!
Love it. (travel vlog format that is)
Agree. Renting can be tricky. We have brought a copy of cc agreement showing insurance coverage. Also check if the country you are renting in requires an international driving permit (IDP). It was really easy to obtain one from AAA (in the US) and I believe it was valid for one year. Take photos or do a video of the car before you drive off the lot as others suggested. My husband had an issue with our rental in Costa Rica this summer but I never got the full rundown of what happened. We did watch someone's video about scams in Costa Rican rentals. Thanks for this video and the one you will do about renting!
Rental is the worst, curbed a wheel and it did cost a fortune, luckily the card I had at the time did cover it, but still was a hassle.
Don't have that card anymore and it's not that common here it's included, so for next time I'm not sure what to do.
I would definitely love a video on renting cars in Italy. We are going to Italy in April 2023. (You asked for the comment to have a sort of date stamp-Dec 18, 2022. ) thank you
Hiya. Ashley, if I'm not mistaken, that sweet wine produced there, that you like so much, is a dessert wine. Correct me, if I'm wrong. Stay safe. All the best to you.
Never purchase the company's insurance as it's only a CDW and covers the excess on their policy. They charge an arm and a leg. Take photographs before moving the car (for any previous damage) and before handing the keys back so as a record to dispute any damage claim made by them.
That's the Champagne method of wine production invented by an Englishman. In the bottle second fermentation. Unfortunately cannot be called Champagne as a registered domain just Sparkling Wine ( for those produced and grown in England) Prosecco in the region there.
Hours?? How! It should take like 15 minutes max lol. Sorry that happened, to be honest I have rented cars several times and never had a single problem. In terms of insurance, I make sure to always read the fine print beforehand and check what's included and what isn't so there are no surprises
Sorry for your experience Ash, car rental experience varies quite significantly not from company to company but from country to country. You can rent a car from the same company in two separate countries and the experiences could be massively different. And unfortunately in terms of scamming, I don't think Europe is that bad vs states 😊
Rental companies are always a scam/ripoff, especially the ‘cheap’ ones. The states used to be the worst but they’ve cleaned up their act now. They should be made to display/quote an ‘all-in’ price with no levies/additions. My easiest european experience was Enterprise in Belgium.
I love moscato too, my friend makes fun of me because she thinks it's too sweet like juice haha
How can your credit card cover you for a car crash though? I understand how it works for purchases but that seems odd to me
I thought you would spend the holidays in US
she is, this was probably filmed weeks ago
I got scammed by Alamo-Enterprise Athens Airport branch.
Anyone could recommend a reliable rental company in Italy? Would like to fly to MXP and reviews for all companies are soooo bad online. 😅
Terrible what happened to you but those other people who were 2 hours late, well that's quite late so I'm not surprised they gave their booking away. When you sign up it warns you about that.
I think Ash has a boyfriend. Look at 7:17 I dont know about you but you dont look like that to a friend.
nope definitely just a friend haha, they might be self-conscious cause they're on camera
You're such a mess when discussing car-rental no wonder you are ripped off. Cut out the beginning 3 minutes of trivial nonsense. Concentrate and focus what you intend to talk about
