- When visiting Venice, Italy there are so many things you can choose to do but in this video I think I have found arguably THE BEST way to spend and afternoon.
Row Venice is a non-profit organization of passionate women and expert vogatrici, Venetian by birth and by choice. We are dedicated to the preservation of the traditional Venetian cultura acquea and at its center, the voga alla veneta, the Venetian style of rowing: standing up, facing forward, native to Venice and made iconic by the gondoliers. Many of us are also athletes and regatanti devoted to this Venetian sport that’s as old as the city itself.

Why take the expensive and short trip on a gondola when you can spend an afternoon learning the ins and outs of being a Gondolier yourself.
I also tried traditional Italian tapas and share a bit more of the history of this amazing place. Enjoy!

Although we have been on a gondola in Venice, I learned so much more from you Ashley. This was really informative, and loved seeing the Venice views. It happens to be one of, if not, my favorite city. I love just wandering around and getting lost. Although, we have now been there 3x, so getting lost is getting harder to do....haha! Loved the information on gondolas, I certainly learned a thing or two! Venice looks amazing as always. The tour guide sure did make it look easy, I've not had a go in Venice but I have a couple of times in Cambridge - not sure if it's the same principle! It was definitely more difficult that it looks!
YEAHHHH I love hearing you learned a few new things. Thats the goal for sure! Im actually not sure if the idea is the same or not. Its a great question. After years and years of doing it she does make it look way easier than it actually is. It would take me much longer to really get it down than a short tour. Its a good thing she was with us lol other wise we may have gave up and rowed it lis a kayak . lol -Ash

Do the buildings have any basements or first floor? why the 1st floors or bottom of the buildings that are in contact with the water not get flooded or damaged? how do they maintain the homes against the water and mold?
I'm not sure. I don't imagine they do. I do know the building do suffer water damage and if you look close in many of the buildings salt grows on the walls because it comes up through the bricks being moist. Its s interesting. Don't tell anyone but I licked one of the walls in a restaurant I went to just to make sure t was salt. Gross I know but I can confirm its actual salt. haha -ASH
Most of the buildings have “garages” on the water that they can pull their boats into. Then use steps up to the main part of the house. Venice is tidal so the water rises and falls. Those bottom areas often get flooded from tides and rain.

Oh, that looks like so much fun! I agree that taking the longer tour and being able to ask questions would be a much better experience than just taking a 30 minute tour through the canals. Always interesting to try new foods while traveling. It kinda made me giggle when you bit into the octopus and almost lost a tiny tentacle. haha! Can't wait to see what else you ended up doing while you were in Venice.
Hey Ash. I visited Venice for a week in the summer. Lovely place but very crowded when I visited and it was rather hot as well! Hitting the 90's most days. Love to go back but maybe off season would be better.

I so wish I had more of this historical information before I visited Venice on a tour we took several years ago. Definitely would have made the gondola ride much more interesting! I love Venice!

I did a gondola ride there in Venice on my trip there but thanks to you Ashley I got so much information about them I didn't know before. The gondolist on that trip only rode us around on small narrow channels and singed romantic songs for us and we were not couples just tourists on the same day trip to Venice from Cattolica. Thank you Ashley for another interesting video

Yeah we were there in Venice for a day and for a extra cost we had posibility to do a ride on gondolas, and because I was travelling solo I was connected with other tourists travelling solo so I ended up on that ride together with a stranger girl. The gondolier didn't probably knew that we were strangers to each other. Sometime in the future it is something I hope and wish to do together with somebody very special to me in the romantic way with the gondolier singing romantic songs.
When I went to Venice, I never went on a gondola ride because it was like $100 or something for the two of us haha. I guess it's gone up even more now. Probably worth it once in a lifetime if you split it with a group of friends though

Such an insightful lesson on gondolas! Thanks so much Ash, and you looked like a pro with the driving ! I would not have the same reaction as that seagull did at the beginning LOL Never know why "tourists" are generally frowned upon (not saying you are doing it ).. after all they are travellers too looking for sights to see stuff to do etc.
LOL Scott It's a trick because I'm far from a pro. With out the guide I for sure would have ran into the wall.

Did you know that Birmingham, England has more canals than Venice? And for £500 you can hire a canal boat for a week!

@@WAYAWAYWithAsh Yes you should do it Ash! It's best if there are 2 people. I've hired a 65 foot canal boat and gone chugging along the Oxford Canal and others. The scenery is amazing and it's so peaceful you will feel more relaxed than ever before. And there are beautiful pubs and restaurants all along the canal networks too! It was the most fabulous time ever!
