  • TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT REMOVAL BMW N20 N26 ENGINE 320i 328i 420i 428i 520i 528i X1 X3 X4 Z4 F20 F22
    In this video we will explain how to replace timing chain on BMW with N20 engine or how to replace timing chain on BMW with N26 engine. BMW N20 N26 engines are known for timing chain failures at very early mileage (mostly the early generation of the N20 engines). When the timing chain fails you may be lucky and not ruin your engine but very often you may even need engine rebuilt if you bent the valves. This same engine has been used in multiple BMW models. We demonstrated how to replace the timing chain on BMW 5 series but the procedure will apply to multiple BMW models that use the same design of timing components.

    So I'm new to BMW. I brought a 2012 3 series tourer, the chain was replaced before purchased and the rocker cover gasket, I drove home which took me 2hours, but didn't notice till later and oil leak, not massive but enough for me to be concerned. Doesn't seem to drip when parked and cold, I've not driven it much since having it because of the leak and I wanted to call the garage, bit of a long story about what was said, but was told by the used dealer that it could be a little oil leaking out from when the chain was done and to check in a few days, because its not dripping now when parked should i go with what he said

    Do you think it’s possible to remove and replace the cylinder head with the engine still in the car. My timing chain guides broke apart and it skipped time, so I probably have bent valves.

      There were approximately 120k miles on the car. I did a leak down test on each cylinder, so the valves were not bent. Didn’t remove the cylinder head. Replaced the timing chain and oil pump drive chain, new improved sprockets, new tensioner. Got the tools needed from Amazon - they worked fine. You will need a scanner that is bidirectional with bmw software. My car works great now. Good luck.

    • @blado3442
      @blado3442 Před 3 lety

      No you don't have to but if you are also replacing the oil pump chain and tensioner then yes.
      You are installing the chain assembly by sliding it from the top down. There is no need to remove the oil pan.

    • @Minienthusiast
      @Minienthusiast Před rokem +1

      If you have lost the timing on your BMW X3 after removing the timing chain tensioner before removing the camshaft bolt, you will need to follow these steps to reset the timing:
      Rotate the crankshaft in the normal direction of engine rotation until the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket is aligned with the timing mark on the engine block. This will put the engine at top dead center (TDC) on cylinder 1.
      Once the engine is at TDC on cylinder 1, locate the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets. The timing marks may be located on the sprocket itself or on a plate attached to the sprocket.
      Rotate the camshaft(s) until the timing marks are aligned with their respective reference marks on the engine head.
      Install the camshaft bolt(s) and tighten them to the manufacturer's recommended torque specification.
      Install the timing chain tensioner and release the tensioner according to the manufacturer's recommended procedure.
      Verify the timing marks are still properly aligned after releasing the tensioner.
      Finally, rotate the crankshaft in the normal direction of engine rotation several times to ensure the timing chain is properly seated and that the engine timing is correct.

  • @FastEddies
    @FastEddies Před 3 lety +1

    So you only have to remove the pan if your doing the pump? So the oil balance shaft will be TDC when you put the motor at TDC why did you remove oil pan then?

    • @boomy818
      @boomy818 Před rokem +1

      Anytime you do timing job you have to lock the oil pump balance shaft, cams, the pin to the flywheel and remove the crank bolt and redo everything
