- TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT REMOVAL BMW N20 N26 ENGINE 320i 328i 420i 428i 520i 528i X1 X3 X4 Z4 F20 F22
In this video we will explain how to replace timing chain on BMW with N20 engine or how to replace timing chain on BMW with N26 engine. BMW N20 N26 engines are known for timing chain failures at very early mileage (mostly the early generation of the N20 engines). When the timing chain fails you may be lucky and not ruin your engine but very often you may even need engine rebuilt if you bent the valves. This same engine has been used in multiple BMW models. We demonstrated how to replace the timing chain on BMW 5 series but the procedure will apply to multiple BMW models that use the same design of timing components.

I love this guys Tech has a case of the drops. I thought I was the only one that gets them.
Very impressed with your guy's technical skills and explained well.
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! Thank you!
Amazing bro good job
Very nice
Too much okays =))) good job!
Subscribed and liked even ordered the jumpsuit
I did too. I had to get it from Romania on E-bay. I love it.
How come on my N20 2014 X1 there was only 1 vacuum line in the engine cover? The other one seemed plugged up?
👏👏👏
Where did you buy the timing kit ?
where can i buy 2013 bmw 328i n20 piston rings other than the dealer there expensive?
Hi, how similar is this to the n55 535i?
Did u remove sub frame
Mechanics love bimmers 😃
Thanks for detail video. I believe it’s possible to do this job without oil pan removing and also without camshaft holder tool. What do you think?

No. You must get take the chain that runs the oil pump off
So I'm new to BMW. I brought a 2012 3 series tourer, the chain was replaced before purchased and the rocker cover gasket, I drove home which took me 2hours, but didn't notice till later and oil leak, not massive but enough for me to be concerned. Doesn't seem to drip when parked and cold, I've not driven it much since having it because of the leak and I wanted to call the garage, bit of a long story about what was said, but was told by the used dealer that it could be a little oil leaking out from when the chain was done and to check in a few days, because its not dripping now when parked should i go with what he said
Why you dont have impact wrench
Do you think it’s possible to remove and replace the cylinder head with the engine still in the car. My timing chain guides broke apart and it skipped time, so I probably have bent valves.
How many miles did you car have at the time?
There were approximately 120k miles on the car. I did a leak down test on each cylinder, so the valves were not bent. Didn’t remove the cylinder head. Replaced the timing chain and oil pump drive chain, new improved sprockets, new tensioner. Got the tools needed from Amazon - they worked fine. You will need a scanner that is bidirectional with bmw software. My car works great now. Good luck.
@@cliveblowers709did you do the work yourself? What city/ state
My car 2016 bmw 328i 67k miles Does it need to be changed or when and how is it checked?
Keep doing 5k mile oil changes and you’re good until 120k
Do I have to remove the oil pan just to change timing chain and guide?
No you don't have to but if you are also replacing the oil pump chain and tensioner then yes.
You are installing the chain assembly by sliding it from the top down. There is no need to remove the oil pan.
However if there are broken guides it's better to remove oil pan
How should you get the intake cam back in time?
Barcode faces up and you use the tool
Hi Guys, I remove the tensionner of the timing chain before remove the cam shaft Bolt, and I lost the timing, please advise how to get back to the timing.
Thank tou.
If you have lost the timing on your BMW X3 after removing the timing chain tensioner before removing the camshaft bolt, you will need to follow these steps to reset the timing:
Rotate the crankshaft in the normal direction of engine rotation until the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket is aligned with the timing mark on the engine block. This will put the engine at top dead center (TDC) on cylinder 1.
Once the engine is at TDC on cylinder 1, locate the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets. The timing marks may be located on the sprocket itself or on a plate attached to the sprocket.
Rotate the camshaft(s) until the timing marks are aligned with their respective reference marks on the engine head.
Install the camshaft bolt(s) and tighten them to the manufacturer's recommended torque specification.
Install the timing chain tensioner and release the tensioner according to the manufacturer's recommended procedure.
Verify the timing marks are still properly aligned after releasing the tensioner.
Finally, rotate the crankshaft in the normal direction of engine rotation several times to ensure the timing chain is properly seated and that the engine timing is correct.
So you only have to remove the pan if your doing the pump? So the oil balance shaft will be TDC when you put the motor at TDC why did you remove oil pan then?
Anytime you do timing job you have to lock the oil pump balance shaft, cams, the pin to the flywheel and remove the crank bolt and redo everything
Looks like that oil was NEVER CHANGED. 🥶
Do you have to go counter clockwise to get the timing lined up or can you go clockwise as well on the intake side of the shaft.
Clockwise

Why remove the oil pan?
I completed the timing chain installation and got everything put back together but am now getting error codes 135808, 12B302, 12B102 and 1B5202. I checked the grounds I could think of but can't see anything obvious.. please help
Good Lord where did you learn to do all of the stuff that was the most complicated thing I’ve ever witnessed in my life I’ve got a and 2014 n20 I’m taking up next week to have BMW dealer evaluation to see if there’s anything wrong with the timing chain try to do a preemptive strike on it or I’m dumping the car one of the two
What did the dealer end up saying?
@@DC. They put the car through a variety of software tests and visual inspections and said there’s no issue with the timing belt or guides nothing that would indicate something is in need of attention I’m still driving the car to this day that was about seven months ago the car is running fine so I’m still gonna get rid of it very soon I think I just don’t wanna have to pay 35 or 40% more for another certified preowned
@@mfamily217 I just got a 2014 320i with about 94,000 miles on it. Seems to be running great. I'm hoping to have it for a few years
@@DC. I’ll tell you this I bought my 2014 in 2017 with 27,000 miles on it I now I have 68,000 miles on it the car has run flawlessly with the exception of replacing a door lock actuator for 600 bucks and then I had to pay 1000 bucks to replace an electronic module on the front that controlled the washer fluid sprayer and a little headlight washer …..beyond that the car has been absolutely perfect since the day I bought it I love it
@@mfamily217 I just heard someone tell me today that they had a 328i for about 150,000 miles, drove it hard from time to time. The timing chain did eventually give out but that was a decent amount of miles
Do you have any Audi Q7 videos?
JM auto repair: i have a couple of videos on how to replace pistons, head gasket, timing chain and so on
What you or a regular shop charge for this job
Anyone know how many teeth you can jump before the engine is damaged. 2014 x3 sputtered son stopped, then started it back up drove 1/4 mile then died have drivetrain error and would not restart
How do you drop the oil pan if it is a x drive?
There a chain at the bottom as well that’s why
Subframe and front differential must come out
Based on what I see, wouldn't be easier to remove the engine for this job? Not being critical.
ok
I have a 328i 2014. How much tine to wait to change the timing chain?
When u hear a ticking sound
Ach to liba!!!!
No wonder why the chain failed; look at that engine oil!! Too long of an interval for oil changes or the wrong oil?
Kho

Sorry guys but you do it completly wrong what you do to get the camshaft on time is not good
How do you retime the intake cam? Please any info about this would help. I was hoping these guys would show, but when they went to do it; it skipped backwards.
To much work not that easy thats not a job for person who don't have a clue and even i did I wouldn't want to do this.
Hi I need help I took my bmw 535i 2009 and they did something wrong it started making a loud banging noise that got louder with acceleration here's a link so u can hear it czcams.com/video/hQr2nWKYBOU/video.html. I found what I believe to be the problem. After taking the crankshaft cover I discovered one of the rocker arms had broken off. If you could post a video on how to fix this I would greatly appreciate it... Thank you in advance u guys are the best!!!

maybe you should just pay for CZcams premium. I haven’t watched one add in two years now. lol
