What does the mass production of the domestically-produced WS-20 engine mean for China?

  • The mass production of China's domestically-produced WS-20 engine is about to become a reality. This not only signifies China's independence from foreign technology but also symbolizes the country's aerospace industry moving towards autonomy and strength. However, this move has also sparked much contemplation: why is China so committed to developing its own engines? What does the mass production of the domestically-produced WS-20 engine mean for China? What is the significance of the localization of aerospace engines for China's military power and defense system?
In a military report program aired by CCTV in April last year, China openly showcased a brand-new Y-20B transport aircraft. The most significant difference compared to the first batch of Y-20A in service lies in its engine. While the Y-20A was equipped with Russian engines, the Y-20B has been fitted with domestically-produced WS-20 engines, attracting the attention of the U.S. War Zone website. According to analysis from the U.S. War Zone website, the mass production of the WS-20 brings at least two significant implications: first, the Y-20 of China has rid itself of dependence on Russian engines, and second, the Y-20 will enter an unlimited production phase, meaning China can manufacture as many as needed. The potential of the Y-20 will be fully realized. Why does China insist on developing its own domestically-produced WS-20 engine, and what does its mass production mean for China? Today, the editor wants to discuss with you the importance of the localization of aerospace engines for China.
Engines have always been the most dazzling gem in the aerospace industry and a longstanding weakness in China's aerospace industry history. From early J-10s, J-11s to later mainstay fighters like J-16 and J-20, they heavily relied on Russian engines. Even China's L-15 trainer aircraft required AL-32 turbofan engines from the Ukrainian Motor Sich company.
During the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Motor Sich was destroyed, and the AL-32 engines ordered by China faced delivery difficulties. It's not just the AL-32 engines made in Ukraine; even the Russian-made D-30KP2 engines experienced temporary disruptions in supply. The D-30KP2 engines are mainly installed on the Y-20 and H-6K large aircraft. From 2009 to 2016, China ordered D-30KP22 engines from Russia five times. After receiving the orders, Russia delivered a total of 463 engines. Considering that each Y-20 is equipped with four engines and excluding the quota for H-6K, Russia's supply can only meet the production needs of about 100 Y-20s, and any more engines would be insufficient. Especially after the Russia-Ukraine conflict began, Russian military factories had to prioritize frontline battlefield needs, similar to how India's large orders of T-90s main battle tanks were first sent to the Eastern Front. Such unexpected events are uncontrollable. If you want to control your fate, you must achieve technological independence.

WHY did China want to develop their own engine? Have you forgotten that the US banned supply of engines to prevent the progress of their C919 aircraft.

China was happy to buy Russian engines for their military aircraft, and Western engines for the C919 commercial jetliner. Following US trade sanctions as of the Trump administration, China was forced to reconsider their global approach. Hence the refocus on domestic engines. China doesn't need to match the USA and Russia in sheer numbers and volume of heavy transport. As a defensive country then China doesn't need to be the world's policeman, nor to project military power against other countries. China simply needs to be THE only significant military power in Asia and the western Pacific, and this can be accomplished with overwhelming asymmetric firepower via networked smart weapons.

"What does the mass production of the domestically-produced WS-20 engine mean for China?"
It means not being held to ransom by a belligerent and paranoiac West (the USA) which can sanction and bar (which has sanctioned and barred) any product from being sold at any time to China based on the USA's fictitious and infamous "national security" reasonings.
It means having to save itself from spending billions to buy LEAP jet engines and their spare parts from the U.S. and France and keeping the technology to itself.
It means being able to manufacturer and produce how many engines it needs and when it needs them instead of relying upon some foreign company that is controlled by their government.
It means being independent and relying upon itself and not upon others (ie learning to fish)
It means being able to further develop and enhance (innovate) the technology of low by-pass long range jet engines by itself, giving lots of work to its burgeoning ranks of top engineering students.
It means giving employment to their own people in manufacturing the engines instead to some other foreign country.

The high by-pass turbofan WS-20 is for military aircraft use. On the other hand, China's Yangtze CJ-1000A and B and CJ2000 are the counterpart of the US Boeing and France Safran "LEAP" high by-pass CFM engines for commercial passenger planes like the Boeing 737Max, the Airbus A320neo and until recently, the Chinese Comac C919.
The two engines are different in internal design and each are meant for a different purpose. One has vector thrust and after burners for top burst speed but shorter range, the other is designed for long range, fuel efficiency and quieter noise levels. China used to purchase military jet engines from the Russians and Ukrainians but due to supply problems plus the fact that should a war break out, the lines of supply will be restricted or cut, making it very difficult to re-supply your own planes.
One only has to look at the experience of the Australians during the outbreak of WW2 - its Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation was able to design and build airframes for the country's fighter planes (the Wirraway, the Boomerang, and the Woomera) but all suffered from a lack of having indigenous built engines to power the planes and have to depend upon engines shipped out from England - making it a huge disadvantage against the Japanese "Zero" fighters.
China also used to purchase the Boeing-France "LEAP" engines at a cost of around USD$14.5 million each. since a plane uses two engines, this would be USD$29 million per plane, not to mention having backup replacement engines and spare parts. China's spend on those engines were USD$52 billion.
However, Biden decided to cut off his own nose because he didn't like seeing China's image in the mirror and stopped the sale of the engines to China (when you think about it, the sums don't match - Biden wants China to buy more from the U.S. but at the same time, stops the sale of all the big ticket items - jet engines, semiconductor chips, ship turbine engines, etc - that China wants. There's no logic behind it, is there?)
Thank goodness for China that she has better forward planners than those in the U.S. and has been preparing for such a day when the U.S. decides to start cutting off the selling of products to her.

China would have developed WS-20 and WS-15 engines in normal circumstances. But US sanctions to sell engines and West support of Ukraine Russia war forced China to expedite the development of engines. If West has been selling engines China would have been awaiting the development of engines for next 10 years.

Congratulations in becoming independent in making airplanes but don’t forget that they need fuel, if it is true Russia is down 45% in oil production due to war. Battery development is the ultimate goal. Batteries for all transport. Maybe some hydrogen or ammonia engines but they have their own problems, see how that technology develops.

Compared with the complexity of landing on the moon, bringing moon rocks back to Earth, landing on Mars and the space station, designing and manufacturing high-end chips/designing and manufacturing advanced aero engines is a piece of cake. Sour grapes people can only talk about everything in vain. When talking about advanced science and technology, it can be said that a blind man feels the elephant. It is purely a layman's talk.
