For anyone asking about men's basic bodice pattern tutorial, please see it here czcams.com/video/0uGxpvDYORA/video.html&t
I've followed those three times and every time my calculation put my upper bust line right on my bust line? Is that normal?
Nice
Thanks I was going to join sewing classes but thanks to u I don't have to ❤ love u 💞 u just make it so simple love u ❤️
Hi at 4:23 you spoke about the round neckline but you didn't show the measurement so I don't understand, I'm refering to the basic bodice block
Sometimes you guys post these without knowing the impact you make on someone's life. My mother has always told me I couldn't do it and you just made it possible. I feel like I can do anything now. Thank you💯
I'm really sorry your mom told you that. How wonderful that she was incorrect! I don't know if you need to hear this today, but I'm proud of you ❤
I paid 4000$ for a pattermaking class in NY for 9 months and this lady just explained better than my FIT proffesors how to create a pattern. 🤭🤷🏼♀️
Ayee I was going to attend there, do you recommend it?
*sweats in New York baby cosplayer that doesn’t know what to do and was planning on taking classes*
OH MY LORD 4000$?? I wouldn't even convert that to my currency because it's breaking my bank account even in my own currency which 15x less than dollars, how rich are you??
This lady her name is all over the page
@@trxuvaille6788 🤣🤣🤣🤣 your comment made me laugh so hard.
To anyone who's planning on using this tutorial, use it as a GUIDE ONLY. Do not just trust that your vertical measurements will be the same as hers as she doesn't explain that those are HER vertical measurements, measure your own before you start. As she does not explain all of her maths (i.e. why is the bust divided by 6?), I found that they didn't work for me and I needed to add a couple of inches in various places because I have a much rounder body shape and so to actually fit my curves I needed to widen my arm holes for example.
This is a good tutorial to start you off but it will not give you a perfect bodice block by following it exactly. Watch it from start to finish so you can see what measurements you need and how it's constructed. Then watch it again as you make your bodice block. Finally, test your bodice block and see where adjustments need to be made. You may need to make a few drafts to ensure it fits you properly.
I'm trying to draft a bodice and am having a hard time settling on a tutorial. Any suggestions or tips?
those vertical measurements are the universally standard measurements used in the pattern making industry
oh thank you because this was coming out all weird in the bust area!
Yeah you have to go to the link in the description- Taking your own measurements
thanks Love
Omg you’ve saved me from buying a wedding dress, this tutorial has really helped me learn the basics, cant wait to make my wedding dress.
Yandelay Aguilar are you crazy?! You...must be super talented 😆
You can do it 💪
Sameee! I’m making my prom dress and I’m so excited!!
so like, how did it go/ how is it going??
We need an update :3
This is by far the easiest way to bodice pattern making. I have been doing this for about seven years and it has never failed. You can transfer it to so many styles. Well done Kim Dave.
It's true even I understand it so easily
Hey! The 10, 6 and 8 inches marked at the beginning are for any sizes? 🤫😀😀
Very useful😍
Wow!! So perfectly explained. This is just what I was looking for. I last learned how to create a paper pattern in my sewing class in 1970 (when I was 17) Today I am 68 and was looking to stitch my own long dress, and you brought back my memories of stitching. Thank you so much.
Awwww🍪
Try visiting other pattern making sites in CZcams. It is best to get comparisons for more ideas.
I have never learnt sewing and had no idea on sewing but after following this tutorial, i have been able to sew my first dress even with sleeves...I followed your sleeve tutorial as well. I even wore the dress to church on my birthday this year which was Easter Sunday...thank you very much. I'm very grateful. Being able to do this is more than enough motivation for me😄
Girl!!!
I never commented on CZcams, but I came to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I followed payed professional tutoring, get books, patterns, and too many CZcams tutorials but nothing 😵💫. However, I followed your videos and FINALLY got the results I wish. I believe it’s your way of explaining the steps simply, and not throwing too much information that may confused beginners.
Merci beaucoup!!
AM SO PREVILLEGED TO HAVE WATCHED THIS BECAUSE I HAVE ALWAYS HAD PROBLEMS WITH DRAFTING IT FOR AS LONG AS A YEAR. CAN YOU IMAGINE
Thank you so much, my Mum taught me to draft patterns like this but I had forgotten after many years and you make it look so simple again. I am looking forward to starting sewing again
Fantastic! Thanks for all the detail! I really appreciate that you don’t go too fast, that you show the whole thing (zoom out), and that you explain WHY it’s done that way. ❤️
Love that this is straight to the point with sweet and simple explanations. Learned so much and my notes is only a quarter of a lined sheet of paper long.
By far the best and easiest tutorial on the basic block, THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH,. Please keep the tutorials coming PLEASE!
Thank you so much for this video absolutely no one else on CZcams is this easy to follow.
Yassss! She came through on this one!
Yah without doing the ABC etc like some shown vids out there.
Tabitha Bridges - Absolutely true, been trying for pattern from years but nothing like this, it's like a magic.
Tabitha Bridges right
I really enjoy it too! Thought it was the best I’ve seen!
I'm currently inspired to make my own sweaters/cardigans via crochet, and one of the CZcamsrs I watched made a bodice before making the cardigan so I'm binge watching bodice videos to start learning. But this one is definitely the best, most beginner-friendly video!!! Thank you so much for this!!!
Good evening my dear , you're wonderful , you helped me so much with this video, been watching so many videos for couple weeks and I found out you were the the only one who helped me to make my first body pattern , since I have your body size used your measure And did follow you and I'm very happy , wishing you the best.sincerely Marietta from Montenegro 😘😘
I am very new to making garments for myself and this video is excellent. I will need to watch it several times in order to make myself a bodice block. Thank you very much for sharing this. xxxx
Love ❤️ this, u didn’t rush through the steps u really help me a lot Thz & God bless
The explanation was so easy and clear to understand. I've been looking everywhere to learn about the darts, thank you so much!
I am so grateful for you & your videos!! It makes me feel like I can actually do this.
Wow, wow, wow. This is the best tutorial I've ever seen, explained pefectly. Thankyou.
This is such a good instructional video! I really appreciate how thorough and straightforward you have made this tutorial! I am a very basic sewer, I've never dreamed of drafting my own patterns because it seemed so complicated. There is only one other sewing video on youtube that I consider to be the holy grail of good sewing instruction...but yours is definitely surpassing that video by leagues. Thank you!
What size pattern is that.
Kim Dave, Show more of your videos very much with care.
what's the other holy grail video?? :)
Love this tutorial so much! This technique allows you to make a block for measurements that aren’t your own which is something I’ve been looking for being I don’t make custom orders or clothing for myself. I’ve been wanting to make blocks that I can use regular standard us size chart.
Thank you so much!!
Thanks soooo much! Your tutorial is very clear, precise, and nicely detailed. I will be using this pattern for many years to come. You're the best!
This tutorial is helpful, I want to start designing my own clothes
You make perfect pattern videos, you're really easy to follow and I'm SO happy i came across you on youtube..Thank you!
I have not being sewing for a while since I don't have my own sewing machine yet, but after watching this I am confident it will be like "riding a bike" you are so clear and easy to follow.. 💕💕
You are very talented and so easy to watch. I went to school for fashion way back in the 80’s. You bring so many memories back to me. I love watching design videos. Great job.
You’re amazing! This is the first time this has made sense to me. Thank you soooo much. Could you show us how to make a bodice block for knit fabric.
This is literally the best tutorial I've watched for a bodice block. Thank you!!
You're the best teacher ever. I will always follow you for further enlightenment
This was so helpful! I've been too scared to sew without a store-bought sewing pattern... until now! Can't wait to try this out. You were very thorough and easy to understand. Thank you!
Best explanation ever I've learnt my basic bodice block at my sewing college but you've explained it better than all each step was by far clearer than what I learn
Well Done Kim 👏 I'm going to sit with the sleeve draft now
Thank you for taking the time to make such an amazing video! I’m a beginner and your videos are so easy to follow and I love how and why you do the thing you do ❤️❤️
One of the best basic pattern videos I have seen so far, very clear and precise.
Thank you so much! As an aspiring Fashion designer who can't yet go to fashion school, this has been really helpful to me and on my journey to make patterns for clothes.
A real life saver, the instructions I got from my school have been missing for ages, and the book I have got me so confused. Thanks for this!
I love it! I’m going to have a go at drafting one for me.
I like how you explain it. Very clear. You made it easy for me to understand. Thank you
You explained that so clearly and well, and I appreciate you going through step by step explaining everything without a rush and with such clarity. I'm a beginner, and I've watched so many videos trying to grasp this, and they all move too fast and they were not clear in explaining . The way you teach/ illustrate what you're doing I cannot express how valuable that is; keep moving forward to succes.
I have been sewing for 62 years. Your way is so easy to understand. Thank you so much. I have watched this video several times. And I will each of your videos. Thank you again
Oh wwwoooowwwwww....and to think I almost paid to learn the hard way lol....THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME❤👏👏👏👏👌
I think
Girl thank you so much for this video!! This is so helpfull for beginner like me, and it’s so easy following your steps 👌
Thank you so much for this clear and simplified tutorial 👌 it's been ten years since I learnt drawing patterns. I was searching for something like this. You have inspired me to start right away👍
Woww.....if u only know how simple n quite understanding this has been for me. Thank u really appreciate this. Going n try now
Great tutorial, delivered in a calm manner, no silly chatter.
Just what I was looking for. Thankyou Kim
Just found you today. What an excellent tutorial! Thank you!
Thanks dear 💕
I learned this in a Singer's sewing class in my country. I was only able to do the first six weeks course. But it taught me quite a bit. This is the best video I've seen. Great job.
Oh, Kim, You are really a good teacher. This is so far the easiest bodice pattern making I have come through CZcams. Every bit of the pattern was explained so clearly. I am really impressed. Thank you so much. keep it on. A big thumps up.
Kim, thank you for your clarity, patience and grace. I so appreciate your very helpful video. I'm looking forward to making my own patterns. As a beginner/intermediate this takes so much mystery and confusion from the process of making clothes that fit. You are a gem!!!
I enjoy watching your video for the first time and will be making my own patterns and doing some sewing for myself until I build my confidence to sew for others, love what I see so for.
You are are. I didn’t taught it that well
Thank you! Finally a video that is simple enough for me to understand!
thank you
I've just stumbled across you video's, I've recently started sewing again after about 14 years. And am loving it ( just wish I could sew all day 😁). I have watched a few block pattern tutorials but I never seemed to fully get it. But thanks to you and your clear instructions I know get it. Super video. Can't wait to watch the others 👍🏼 Thank you so much.
Hi, I’m Victoria. I’m a beginner and you’re my go to person to learn from online. Thank you so much for sharing this video ❤️❤️❤️
I just want to be your forever student. I love the African attire that I have been seeing on Pinterest and I would love to make these beautiful crisp and sharp tops and bottoms. I am a seamstress however I am more of mixing and matching different patterns to achieve my desired result but I want to do more freestyle meaning making my own patterns but I only had to do it once in school when I had designed my prom dress over decades ago now I’m in my late forty’s and I want get back into creating because I find when I am giving to others it’s my happy place. You have inspired me you are very easy to follow however I wish there was a step by step from start to finish of different projects almost like a sew along. Thank you for sharing, I appreciate your time in creating and providing people like me a second chance by you offering these tutorials 💜
Thank you so much for making it so clear👍
I'm beyond thankful to you, this tutorial helped me so much! Thank you thank you thank you for sharing your knowledge❤️
oh my gosh thank you thank you thank you! i kept getting the sizes wrong so i followed these instructions now my bust fits nicely into the clothes i made. never realized there were so many measurements, and this was so easy to understand and straight to the point!!
I was looking for such a video. Thank God l found you.
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. You explain everything so well.
God bless you!
Sheela from Mumbai lndia.
This is the most straightforward process I’ve seen, thank you so much I can’t wait to start drafting all of my patterns!
😃😃😃 I’m happy you love the tutorial 💕

This is the best video explaining how to make a basic block ever! Kim Dave, you made it so easy to understand. Thank you.
You are on point and a good teacher.Very calm and warm.
This has to be the easiest bodice making video on CZcams, I kid you not. Thank you so much for this
Hi @ Kim Dave. Hi I just want to ask for clarification the distance 10,6,8 inches vertical lines from neckline. Is it fix measurements..or is it yours??
Thank you!! I have always struggled with making patterns. This was perfect and understandable. I am so grateful that I was able to find your vid!!
Best pattern tutorial I've watched. Thank you.
This is certainly easy to understand for a novice like me. Thanks for the tutorial.
You're welcome
this is so helpful i was getting so frustrated with drafting my pattern from my textbook
With all the videos I've watched about pattwrn making, I said 'I could never learn how to make a pattern ever!😫'. But you made it so so understandable, you have given me hope, so much hope. And I can't wait to make one. Thank you Kim. God bless you.
Thank you so much. This tutorial is so detailed and east to follow. I’m a new sewer and I was able to draft it and make my first garment. It wasn’t perfect but it was way better than I had imagined. I’ve seen you add facings on other projects so I did so. I now understand the need for interfacing which I didn’t have on hand. I’m so exciting to keep practicing
Try visiting other pattern making sites in CZcams. It is good to compare pattern making methods.
easy and precise 👏
I'm so glad I found your channel, this was an amazing tutorial. :D I think you might just be my favourite sewing channel on youtube. ^^
EDIT: I made my own pattern with the instructions and it worked very well. I just changed the distance between the bust, waist and hipline according to my own measurements because I'm tall and most shirts are a little short on me so I hope this works out better. :) Thanks again for this amazing tutorial, it helped a lot.
Thank you for the positive feedback Lia 💕
How do you get those first 3 points in your tutorial? I'm also tall, 5'10", and need extra length neck to hip.
@@forestsmom You have to take shoulder to bust point measurement ffor bustline (10 inches), and shoulder to waist measurement for waist line (16 inches) and shoulder to hip measurement for hip line(24 inches). hope this will help you
@@Mommadesew is hip line same as hip depth
I've been watching drafting tutorials for months and almost lost self esteem because I could not understand (lol). Then I came across your video. Thank you so much for your clarity. The way you explained how you get the arch in the armhole made me shout "thank you Jesus!" I'm a new subscriber. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
This is the easiest explanation of drawing a pattern. Thank you. Easier than my home ec.classes.
Length measurements would be helpful to me as well. Your tutorials are fabulous. I’m starting to design the styles that suit me.
Hi Kim, lovely videos as always 😍😍. I just wanted to clarify something is the front waist measurement different to the back waist measurement? If yes how does one draft bodice pattern then for example if front wait is 17 and the back is 15 inches how does one draft such bodice patterns please. Thank you 🙏🏾💕
Apart from the inches confusion, this is very useful for me, thanks so much
You have a gift in explaining things clearly. Great tutorial!
I love how good you are at explaining things in this video!! I’ve run into a bit of a problem though where the baseline measurements you gave don’t seem to work with my measurements I’ve taken. For example you said to divide the bust measurement by 6 and add 1.5 to fine the upper chest, then go that far from the shoulder to get it.. my chest is 46” which gives me 9.16”, and it falls exactly where the bustline was plotted in the beginning of the video. Some of the baseline measurements you give don’t seem to be “one size fits all” so I would love to see another video with how to find exact measurements. But otherwise great video you are one of my favorite channels on CZcams, you’ve taught me so much!!
Same for me too
Thanks. ..OK so I'm about to make me my first pattern. ..wish me luck 😊
Good luck Jen. Let us know how it goes 👌
Jen jen - Good luck, even though you should have make your pattern by now 😜
Jen jen hi! Any update on your bodice? P.S. My Nana used to call me Jen Jen. ❤️
I have watch so many pattern making and basic measurement but yours is so simple, easy to follow and worth watching! I'm a newbie in pattern making. Thank you so much for this tutorial video. 👍🏼
Thank you so much! I finally sewed a super basic top that actually fit me
This is a great tutorial. Now can you do a video on how you then use this sloper with a new pattern to make changes to fit your size. I do get what is happening with basic sloper just don’t get how to put it with a bought pattern to fit me. Hope you know what I mean. I am a visual learner. Thank you Val🇨🇦
This is your pattern now. Use the position of down 6" for bust 8" for waist ect to find these points on your pattern and check your bust measurement with the pattern you have you can then see where it falls on what size to choose your size. Should you have a larger waist then bust you can then mark what size for your waist and connect those two lines with an easy curve like connecting a dotted line also same for hip measurement. I am not a professional so not sure I am helping but hoping I am.
@@TheVic923 very short story I want to tell you.... Years ago I started a business with a decent amount of knowledge and research. In business I was hesitant to call myself a full blown professional because my business venture was young and I did not want to misrepresent myself or skills. As time went on more and more I came across people who called themselves professionals who had not had hands on knowledge or only knew basics that most people with initiative and common sense would know. These people would try to sell.me services I needed but could rarely do beyond what I had already figured out on my own. These people get ahead at the expense of people that actually learned everything. Bottom line if you do it , it's making you any money and you are able to teach others the skill you are a professional and do not hesitate to call yourself one.
I found the process very useful but it might be a good idea to mention the shoulder to bust measurement and shoulder to waist measurements as 10” down must be yours but for mine it would be 13.5” from shoulder to bust point.
Hi,so did u use a standard measurement from ur shoulder to bust, waist and hips as mentioned or u used ur own measurement ?
Hazel Cook I’ve never met anyone with a bustline of 13.5” , you must be 7 ft tall 😊
Usually the bustline is 10” or 9.5” and the waist line is 16”
how did she measure the paper before she start with the other measurement?
The paper was about a metre wide because that's the size of my table.
Quin Vee my bust is 12.5 (without a bra) and im 5"4 so its very possible
I saw dozens of videos but none is as clear as yours. Thank you, your a best explainer.
She's so good at what she does, drawing this flawlessly. They taught us a bit differently in my sewing class but it amounts to the same thing.😮
Once I take my measurements how do I determine how far to set them from the top of the paper? Our torso may be a different size, so how do I figure that? (You busy was 10” form the top and then waist Was 6 inches further... how do I know how far down to draw my own from the top?
i have the same question!!!
You can find these measurements by measuring from where your neck turns into your shoulder to your bust. And then from bust to waist, etc !
I'm curious too. Based on store buy clothes I seem to have a shorter torso than most people and also have narrow shoulders so I'm not sure how to adjust this pattern to fit me. I am hoping to make my wedding dress with this help as well as using a dress form.
I have the same question, too.
The top of the pattern becomes your shoulder, I would measure from the top of your shoulder to your upper bust
great tutorial! one question: i see that she has made the measurements a certain distance apart. should i change it according to my body shape?
The variations are small from person to person but if you want a precise fit to your body then it’s worth it to measure yourself first imo. Look up how to take your body measurements, there are tons out there.
I know this is a late reply but hope I helped :-)
Thank you so much for this simple, concise and well explained tutorial. I've been looking for exactly this for several years.
KIM you are a rockstar - I am loving this series.
This is one of the easiest patterns to make that I've watched so far, but can you make a top using the pattern, I'm not so clear how to with the darts.
She uses the pattern here in a later video as a base modifying the neckline.... To transfer the darts she used apin to make a hole in both sheets of papee atthe corners of the dart. then filled them in on the new pattern. You would have to add seam allowances if you wanted to use this directly i think
i was justing wondering where is the back shoulder dart? Thank you for the video.
The back doesn't really need a shoulder dart, it's usually made of a pinch width, you can skip it.
Thanks so much Kim, your tutorial is well detailed, am a new beginner and I just hit the bell button to always get notify anytime you post😍💖☘️🌺🌿🌸
This is awesome. Your instructions are so clear and easy. You are about to become my favorite channel.
Thank you very much. Just one question though, how do you know where to draw the upper chest line.
calvin ferguson yes ,i also don t undestand it
Cris Tina i hope I’m not too late you measure from your shoulder until your chest
I think it’s an estimation - you divide your bust (36 in this case) by 6 and add 1.5. So 7.5 inches down from the shoulder line.
Ok. So at 3:45 you, mark 3" in for the neck and 5" in for the shoulders. Are those your neck width and shoulder to shoulder measurements divisible by 4?
No, they do not need to be divided by 4. They are just standard guidelines/measurements used to obtain the neckline and shoulder width. You are already working on 1/4 of the bodice, so there is no need to divide those two numbers by 4. Just use them the way she is demonstrating.
I have a question regarding the neck depth. Since measurement is not mentioned in the video, could someone help with that?
This tutorial was wonderfully helpful. I feel so much better about my ability to do a good job on my project. Thank you!!
THANK YOU. Simple, to the point, and easy to understand. Best video on making a block on youtube
Thank you 🙏
Great video.
I have a question though.
You divided the bust measurement in 4, so it seems the front and back would be the same width. Is this just for relatively flat chested ladies? Is there some other adjustment needed for breast with larger cup size?
Thanks
You can add darts !
They'll shape the bodice to your chest :)
I would measure with a tshirt on and measure from side seam to side seam at front and at back divide each of those measurements in half to find out your front and back measurements.
It's the stsndard.
Just take and use your correct measurement. Works for every body size. as long as you are using your correct measurement.
I was wondering the same thing but I think taking front and back measurements separately then diving by two and making the front and back pieces respectively should accommodate for a larger bust. Also, darting could fix the back panels however I think there would be too much extra fabric taken in with darts to create a fitted back if using the front measurements for the back panel.
I have the same question. Don’t think this fits everybody, front and back are the same?
Before post this tutorial, have you ever tried whether it fit you?
Nice tutorial. 10inches for the bust and 6inches for waist, is it the standard measurements for bust and waist?
Thanks dear. For the average woman, it is, but I suggest you measure yourself to be sure that these dimensions work for as well. Everyone is unique in their own ways ☺️
You are amazing! Thank you so much for making this video! Most comprehensive ever!
