Wolf got it all wrong. He kept calling the engine still on the tracks as the "lead' locomotive when in fact it wasn't. He also thought that the conductor had the power to slow the train down, On a passenger train the conductor is not in a locomotive. He is back in the cars tending to the crew and passengers.

Having known a passenger Conductor for many years. They do have the power to question and DEMAND that the engineer slow done ..stop back up..etc.
He also have the power to apply the brakes if the cars are equipped.
Freight trains use to habe caboose that hadcan emergency braking valve.
The engineer is the boss..He's responsibilities are to control the crew.

Actually, I believe the P-42 locomotive on the tracks was leading. The engineers are almost always in front of the train, and there in another locomotive on the ground, likely pushing. If the engineers were in the trailing locomotive they would have known the extent of the damage since they were on the ground. Unless both locomotives had independent crews, which I'd think is unlikely

why are they neglecting to mention the obvious second engine sitting OFF the track? They keep saying the 'engine' is on the track yet, and the lady even says at one time she can't tell of there was two engines or not... Its plainly apparent to anyone with eyes there were two engines. Likely one in the front and one in the back...

Good comment, I was checking back on this video, I like that observation. I think alot of things apply. I also think rail tracks cannot be repaired over and over, it will create error. "Do it right the first time", in engineering, in my opinion, means to do it right with the best engineer/welder. Again the observation is opinion for architectural ideas Id have. The train has a head and tails yes. Or just a tails? I would say as a gamer id play a trams or trains game for fun I dont know a whole lot about it other than sims.

Amtrak says it was a pull engine and that the other engine was not engaged. Why don't these trains have GPS which controls the speed of the trains at all times?? The engine still on the track is the trailing engine! This train was southbound. South is to the left in this picture. The road is the Southbound lanes of I-5. South is away from you as you look at the picture. The conductor takes tickets, the engineer drives the train. The conductor could have been in the rear engine or one of the rear cars. The cars on the far side of the bridge went off first following the engine. The cars sideways on the bridge buckled and whipped around and reversed order. The cars on the ground, on near side were at the end of the train and were forced off the rail when the two middle cars buckled and twisted sideways. The engine and cars still on the tracks were at the end of the train and stopped when the hanging cars on the near side of the bridge lodged there.

Actually, there are two people at fault here; the railroad and the engineer. The engineer should not have been going that fast around a curve, no matter what the speed limit, but around that time, Amtrak (and a few other railroads) were putting something called Positive Train Control (PTC) into their systems. PTC would've prevented this as it detects when a locomotive is speeding, but the system failed.

Tilting cars don't reduce the centripetal forces on the tracks. It reduces the lateral forces felt by the passengers inside the tilted cars, but the rails still experience the full outward push of the cornering train. Take a turn too fast and a tilting train can still cause the outer rail to give way.

  • @1articoli
    @1articoli Před 6 lety +2

The engine would be closer to 300,000 lbs. It's obvious from the curve and the way the cars are scattered to outside of the curve that the locomotive that's still on the track, was behind and those cars went down the hill just before the bridge.

So the first cars went down the hill and the last few went on to the bridge already derailed and falling off the bridge.. Re-watch the video and look for the crossing gate...

One locomotive is a brand new Siemens charger 44 that is leading the train, the other is an older GE P40/42 series.
I can’t say why this specific train had two locomotives in a push pull configuration since that isn’t the typical manner Amtrak powers trains, usually all locomotives are located at the front. The exception would be trains that originate/terminate at locations where the locomotives couldn’t be moved around the train or possibly testing.

This is not a infastructure Issue, those tracks were brand new, Dr. Wiliam Mount (Army Corp of Engineers) has stated that this is a demolition job, the rails are blown off the road way and the cars are split into two different directions. This is not possible in a normal derailment.

To the left of the bridge, the second locomotive is clearly seen sitting upright on the road. At 7:36, you can clearly see what looks like a track signal knocked over. If the blue and silver locomotive was pulling the train, that signal would not be knocked over. The other locomotive had to have taken it out before landing on the highway.

In my 35 years in law enforcement and as a first responder volunteer fire fighter in the NYC area, i have never experienced a response time so fast that we were at the scene while the victim was calling it in. The accident would have happened right in front of the fire house/ police station/ EMS unit for a response time as fast as this one here. Even a "Statflight:/"Life flight" helicopter crews has to "scramble" and get airborne and then finally fly to the scene. Not questioning whether this happened or not. i am questioning as to how and why the responders were at the scene as fast as they were. They must be the "super heroes" or something.

There is another very good video, it clearly shows that there had to be something that lifted the train, an explosion of some sort, the tracks are completely gone, if this had been a normal accident the cars would have only gone off 1 side, not split and go off both sides. You can see the rubble, you can clearly see the part where the tracks are completely gone, disinigrated. This is very similar to WW2 trains that were blown up, split, went off both sides of tracks, not just 1 side if this had been a normal incident.

    1) Wolfe Blitzer tells us the locomotive is on the tracks. Wrong it is sitting on the roadway in front of the white tractor towing the orange trailer.
    2) The female tells us the lead loco is on the tracks. Wrong look at the position of the cars behind it. The loco the tracks is the trailing loco.
    3) The male says that it is possible for the mess we see is typical of a train wreck. Simple physics will tell you the mess we are seeing was caused by the loco sitting on the highway.

At 3:08 and various other times, That also is an engine. Passenger cars do not have engine and brake fans on the roof, and they have windows. I see two engines total. Must of had one on each end. Edit, unless it is the galley, or whatever they call the kitchen on a train.

If the news person and the other voices in this were seeing the same video then why didn't anyone in the group realize the the engine was on the ground, it is very large, white and has cooling fans on top. When you see that that is the engine then it is very clear this was a case of excess speed. You can see that the engine went off the tracks before it was even commented to the curve. I will not be at all surprised when it is found this was operator error. There is also a huge difference in the Engineer running a Shinkansen train then in the US. On the Shinkansen the Engineer not only voices what he is about to do but also uses hand gestures, such as if the train is increasing speed the Engineer not only voices what he is doing but also makes a forward pointing motion with his arm and hand.

This train was very similar to the Spanish one crashed in Santiago... but it happened running at 120mph and the corner was harder, this accident is suspicious but chance at only 80mph the aluminium Talgo passenger cars saved lifes, rip.

You mean like the Airlines are run by private companies that have now become oligopoly where they control the prices and the quality control. You see how they treat their customers and there is not competition because all the owners have a agreed on the price. Now Amtrak is not perfect but it's run by the government. The government is us and I don't think we should give that control away. Let's do the work and make it better.

Listen the train was running with Engines on both ends not a cab car the engine went around the curve and derailed and pulled the train with it the engine wound up on one side of the highway with the cars on the other side The train in question can tell on curves so it is able to go round curves much faster than a conventional train however the locomotives that were in the front and in the back are not equipped to tell therefore they must slow down when they entered that 30 mount R curve if the engine their place to train into emergency while he was entering the curve the law of physics and inertia force the rail to turn over and the engine then left the tracks

front engine left rail (full momentum-pulling next cars with it)
cars piled up behind lead engine(skidding to stop-off the rail)
engine on rails experienced abrupt stop as cars buckeled/left rail
can't say they were going too fast(maybe outside rail failed)
got that from the 1st min of the video.

It’s frustrating to see how many comments are focused more on bashing the government than being concerned about these people dying today in a tragic accident. They really think their making a positive difference. That’s tragic. I’m sure the response would be MUCH different if it happened to a member of their own family. The dead are out of second chances, I’m thankful to still have mine.

....maybe cnn should have determined the direction of travel b4 going on air.....the engine on the ground is the lead engine ...it is brand new....a quick look at the scour of the ground trees etc. and the damage to the front of the engine tells you with out a doubt the engineer blew it....it is the engineers obligation to ensure the safety of the passengers and the train....and part of that obligation is to know the route and its danger points....this is obviously not the case......criminal charges are warranted.......tough xmas for that fellow but ...that is the way it is.....

it is force of speed times torque of weighted engine cars, low speeds can fling cars as well, perhaps not as far, but not much speed is important. The energy required to push the weight(x) distance over time is important
