Breaking is alive and well @candycane9264. It's ALL OVER youTube. It's just that it's underground. You don't see major artists hiring B-Boys commercially. They'd rather hire booty dancers instead of B-Boys. But, you're going to see breaking in the upcoming summer Olympics. There's nothing to revive. You even see a little breaking in the You Got Served and all those Step Up movies. It's changed but it's still around.

I was born in 1970 in northern New Jersey, heard hip hop first hit the radio airwaves in NYC in around 79'-ish, was already breakdancing in a crew called Floorlords by 1982 and when Beat Street came out Lee became my cultural hero of that time. And I can't begin to calculate how many times I've watched that Roxy battle (and the entire movie really) over and over. I hope Lee sees this comment one day and sees how much I appreciate his humble attitude and contribution to the culture! 🙌

Beat Street changed mine & so many other lives when it was released here in the UK in 1984.
The two 'Breakin' movies were good but Beat Street was amazing & on another level with the dancing & showing & educating all the elements of Hip Hop.
Also the Breakin movies were glamorous with sunshine but Beat Street looked dark & gritty which most youngsters in the UK could relate to.

I dug Beat Street. It was a fictionalized version of the Style Wars documentary. Breakin' beat it to theaters that year because Cannon Films saw that Belafonte was making Beat Street and they put Breakin' together in 2 weeks (according to Shabba Doo and Popping Pete) just to get it into theaters first. Nice representation of what was going on in the west coast. But, Beat Street had the NY flavor. I loved both. These days kids have You Got Served and the Step Up movies. It's all good.

"Yo Ramo: When you gonna teach me that style man? 'Practice up on it.' 'I like you man.'" Me and my childhood friend, John "DJ Vicious J" Parker used to watch Beat Street over the telephone and could recite every line, word for word. Crazy! What I never understood was during the infamous battle at the Roxy, why didn't Lee do the classic routine he did later in the movie, when he did donkeys, suicide flip and the classic 1990 move? During the battle, all he did was a little footwork, followed by a backspin. And if you really pay close attention, while he's doing his routine, he had a knee brace on but after he finishes his backspin and gets up, the knee brace magically disappears. Nonetheless, Beat Street was an absolute classic. #NewYorkCityBreakers

Wild Style came out before Flashdance but very limited release . Wild Style I think came out in 1982 . For me the first time I have seen Breakdancing was the BUFFALO GALS video with RSC and MALCOLM MCLAREN . The first time for most people seeing Breakdancing live in person is when Top Masters Crew led by ledgandary B Boy OZROCK who was a member of RSC in a club on LANDSDOWN ST right next to Fenway Park in 1983 and they performed to the instrumental of SUCKER MCs by RUN DMC . I was there . Became a full on BBOY after that night . Was already a Dj by 1982 working on cutting and matching beats thanks to inspiration from GRAND MASTER FLASH

Meant to say for most people from BOSTON seeing breakdancing live in person was in a roller skating rink called SPIN OFF which was converted in a a under 21 dance club on SATURDAY night called DANCE FACTORY . after TMC performed that night . BBOY crews formed all overb Greater Boston including FLOORLORDS and the DEVASTATING ROCKETS which was the crew I was in

Legendary b-boy movie, don't forget wildstyle, also great, less budget, If you notice Lee didn't wear a matching tracksuit like the NYC Breakers(beat street) did, bcuz he wasn't a member, maybe that's also why his battle moves were limited, he probably wouldn't have, but they weren't taking a chance he outshined his b- boy crew in the movie

Wow . Though it don’t actually believe that battle in the Roxy ( if that’s what they were talking about ) was done in one take . There is a continuity error in the film where Lee or Robert was wearing a knee pad prior to going into his back spin and then when he actually does it , it’s gone .
