- As a millennial, I felt personally attacked by the Spamton Sweepstakes, and it was absolutely amazing. This Deltarune charity event gave fans plenty to analyze over the coming months, and in this video, I've archived my initial reaction and analysis as the Sweepstakes was ongoing and included information on references, early thoughts and theories, and compiled it as a sort of archive and time capsule for your enjoyment. I will say the possibility that Kris and Berdly were actually friends and his shittalk was like awkward razzing would be a pretty clever reinforcement of how we do NOT know Kris’ life and that you can just make the command decision to antagonize, injure, or even kill a person Kris has known for some time all the more tragic
Yeah, I think Kris and Berdly just have a friendly rivalry at worst. I don't think they really hate each other.
I mean its pretty much confirmed they have at least hung out together before as checking him in the second battle shows that “he usally only gets this angry when you play games with him”
@StrastTheFox Well, Berdly thought it's just a dream at the time, so it isn't like he would just straight up ice Kriss, but they probably aren't the best of friends.
@StrastTheFox Honestly, I doubt it's intentional on his part- even really goofy enemies like ViroVirokuns can kill you despite acting benevolently in their minds and being "friendly." I feel like being able to game over to Berdly doesn't mean they hate each other, personally. xD
It is said in the game that they played video games together. I think when you CHECK him when it is the cyber city battle (or it could be roller coaster battle idk) it says smith like “he’s not usually this angry unless you play video games together” I think kris and berdly played “super smashing fighters” or possibly dragon blazers together (probably more likely smash though)

I think the sweepstakes was the best thing to happen, full of secret lore, chance to win real life prizes, and it's a charity! And ofc looks like the typical scam website-

26:35 I think I remember reading somewhere that in the Japanese version of Deltarune spamton's line "no stop no please it burns" is a little different in that it specifies that it's his eyes that are burning from a blinding light. This would be worth noting because the Japanese localization is overseen by Toby himself and that line is one of the two that made people think spamton fell in the acid pool in the first place
Yeah, I kinda figure that's the case, too! Of course, in the middle of recording, I was too tired to think of that. xD It was 7 AM and I wanted to get as much recorded because we weren't sure if the sweepstakes site was gonna stay up. The Japanese translation is really interesting!
"blinding light" could also have allusions to his "HEAVEN" and the Angel. He has seen the light, and it has blinded him, scorching his soul permanently.
Ok crack theory: I just finished analyzing Plato's Allegory of the Cave in English and I wonder if that connects. The allegory basically covers the idea of people waking up to a completely different reality, realizing their world-view has been restricted and what they thought they knew no longer matters because it was always only a tiny, warped portion of this bigger world. For example, people being trapped in a cave and only seeing other people as shadows from the outside, but then being freed and allowed to go outside.
A large part of it goes over the idea that this realization, this enlightenment to the bigger picture, "burns". In the allegory, it burns for the people going outside and seeing the sun, but it's meant to portray that it's extremely difficult to accept this new reality and wrap your head around it. I wonder if that "no stop please it burns" line, could be taken directly when the Knight/Gaster/whoever woke Spamton up to the fact he's in a dark world? That the realization burned?
Fun fact: while apple seeds don’t contain arsenic, they do contain trace amounts of cyanide! Noelle just got her poisons mixed up.

the sweepstakes made me wonder how someone can make something so low effort, and yet so high effort as well, and with a BROKEN WRIST.....then I remembered its toby fox. And that man's a legend.

Yeah! And that stream from Fangamer that concluded the Spamton Sweepstakes was probably one of the most bizarre and weirdest streams I've ever seen, I mean that in an amazing way!
Anyone else assumed Noelle has a piano at her house even before the sweepstakes?
I didn't think much of it, but it does fit with the rich family vibe that the Holidays give.
Also they're very themed after a holiday that's very music based, and the piano is a really common (feeling) instrument to sing around as a family?
The story of Noelle and the mystery egg and the way it's worded makes me wonder if there's something... metatextual, about it. The experiences Noelle has with the egg makes me think it's either some disguised insight into Gaster's backstory or a meta-commentary from Toby speaking through Noelle about him creating Gaster as a character.
I think it'll definitely lead to something later. What's interesting about Noelle is how tied to creepypasta and game glitches she is. It makes the Chapter 2 weird route make a whole lot of sense in hindsight, tbh.

Its so cool that you documented it for those who joined the fandom after the event, this video will be the closest thing to living the experience for themselves! They've would never know the utter dread that seizes you when you're faced by an image of spamton sitting ominously on a toilet tho.

Oh, thanks for clarifying! :) That's neat. And yeah, the captions took hours- like over 12, I think? But I do think it helps with video accessibility and performance. I'm glad that this unorthodox format is vibing with people. I wasn't sure if having something like this rather than something more structured would appeal as much. xD
I wonder if in the Susie apple scene (New Girl page) Kris whispers "She already did" as they were adopted by monsters. Although it's not entirely clear what the circumstances were. It's a bit dark but I think it could work. Sort of unsure if Toby plans to get into Kris' backstory in regards to how they ended up becoming a Dreemurr. At least with Chara (I don't think Kris is Chara btw) it was pretty tragic. They didn't intend to find the Kingdom of Monsters when they climbed Mt. Ebott. They hated humanity and never talked about why. This likely implies they experienced some sort of abuse which led them to Mt. Ebott.
Kris seems to have some aversion to humans iirc they immediately close a book in a library because humans are in it. To have such a strong reaction yeah it does make one wonder what Kris has gone through.
Gosh I loved the sweepstakes so much! I like how half of the secrets were very goofy, while the other half was super serious, like Susie and Kris's history and Spamton going through a crisis. Idk, I just love the duality of Toby's games lmao. Also one of the few things that (I think) you missed were the pink and yellow eyes that appear when you repeatedly click on the chair. Perhaps Tenna? It's like they don't want us to see something and they also send us back which is weird. Also kind of powerful if they can control where we are. The chair in general is very mysterious too and I really don't know what to make of it
Yeah, I missed that and I neglected to show the prize descriptions for the Berdly statue and Mona Spamton. But the eyes are very mysterious and it's hard to say if they're meant to bE Spamton or if those eyes are gonna be a recurring design motif.
@@Dorked I legit think both those eyes and the ones in the mansion are Spamton due to the fact we know now Spamton’s bracketed dialogue are things other people say and it turns out that ‘Clown around town’ is an obscure line Lancer can say in the mansion before he petrifies. I think he’s got some kind of a way of watching what goes on in there but is too physically weak to actually enter the place himself.
The Berdley in Noelle's comments part read really differently to me. He had an account with no icon, color, as well as his phone number in his name suggesting he hasn't even been on the site before (and maybe hasn't even spent that much time on the web?). When he asks to be the mod of her blog I'm not sure he even understands what he's asking for, and is just trying to interact with Noelle on a new platform. Then Noelle, trying to be "nice" says no without helping his understanding of the situation at all, just assuming Berdley knows he's doing something wrong when he clearly doesn't. It's behavior I've seen from Noelle a few times that I don't see people talk about.
Given Spamton's element, it's very fitting that your cat interrupts in this video.

Gosh, I remember just obsessing over the website when it first came out. I was analyzing every bit of code and I woke up early that day just so I didn't miss anything (not like I was sleeping well my mind was very distracted). Thanks for posting this, I completely forgot just how awesome this was and was just reminded of this now!

35:08 I still subscribe to the acid theory, it's the only real way Spamton's panic over what the Swatchlings would do to him if he went inside would make sense unless it's some arbitrary torture we just don't know about, and the fact that he can enlarge his head but not the rest of his body seems to counter he was always that way. Plus, the "a little shorter than the others" is in brackets, so he could just be metaphorically referring to his wealth.

I just recently stumbled upon your channel and I love it so much. I’m also a 30-something millennial (so very much a senior here in the DR/UT fandom) and the Sweepstakes made me feel SO nostalgic. I had a little Angelfire blog about gaming back in the day just like Noelle. I’m so happy to have found a big presence in this fandom who’s my age and also recognizes all these fun references!

The sweepstakes was very wild, I think this is a very good recap even though in some things feels outdated, it could be useful as a resume in the future, in case we want to look retrospectively of some details. Also, it is always funny to remember our first impression of this because was kind of unexpected and cool, and crazy at the same time. But in a good way.
Yeah, that's why I added the disclaimer at the start, to make it clear it was recorded before we had all the answers. xD It was 100% meant to capture the experience of being there and watching the madness unfold.

I think there's this recurring thing with doors for sure. Even with the unused intro Toby discussed last year, there was talk of a big, white door.

I kinda know what you mean in the title, but i took it more as a compliment. I'm glad the younger generations are even like... remotely interested in the dumb meme's of old internet. especially when you consider like... 5% of people were using it vs. the 95% of people using it now... I won't say it was a total improvement or not, but looking back on those memories gives me a bittersweet feeling knowing they won't ever be replicated for me again, but I'm hopeful someone else will come along and make their own memories that are similar (if that makes any sense). anything other than social media trash fires or telling people off constantly, just some of that good ol' late 90's to early 00's "not taking it seriously" kind of internet. YTMND will never not make me feel old, but if i hadn't left and still used it I probably wouldn't have that feeling y'know? memories are weird, and can do weird things with your emotions sometimes, and it increases exponentially over time and distance. if you read all of this, thanks.

I really enjoyed this reaction to the Sweepstakes. I think it had some good insight on some of the pages on the website. Also, is there a confirmed point in the Deltarune timeline where this occurs? That line about the Knight could have a different meaning depending on when in Deltarune this happened.
I think the Twitter Q&A is after chapter 2, since he does mention that he didn't get to show his EX form.
@@Dorked Thanks for replying! And after Chapter 2 does make sense with that line, especially since it mentions some people stopping him, probably the Lancer Fan Club. The idea that Spamton knows he has an EX form but doesn't know what it looks like is hilarious to me. And this makes me assume that Knight line was like you said, Spamton feigning ignorance, since he doesn't even know that the Knight exists, according to that line. Or he just got cut off.

I wasn't a kid in the late nineties, only graduating into being a toddler from 1999-2001, but even in the early 00s, when I started being a computer kid, some websites were still like this! I was only able to get the tail end of all the fun "late 90s"(/early 00s) nostalgia. I was unsupervised so I also remember the good 4chan as well as YTMND. I LOVED YTMND. It hosted some of the most popular old internet memes, like the Running in the Nineties (lol internet) Ronald McDonald.
Also if you didn't know, in the early 00s the worm on a string was also a gimmick toy, like the Fushigi ball and stuff. At Walmarts and Targets and stuff I'd see like... TV advertisement stands specifically dedicated to the worm on a string. Essentially it was like, "do a cool magic trick by making the worm look like it's moving around in your hands and the worm can do tricks if you master the craft!" Kind of like Tech Decks but... a worm on a string.
The pog Spamton also looks kind of like Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff, a Homestuck spinoff(?? it's referenced by the characters and canonically exists in Homestuck, but Hussie also updated it whenever, had its own website and everything so Idk what to call it rly) which also had incredibly heavy JPEG artifacting
I had the GBA version of the Petz series, I think it was Dogz? I really like the references to old internet creepy "hidden" media secrets like "if you go to this area in Pokémon Sapphire, something Creepy will happen......" and stuff like Ben Drowned.
The candle totally looks like an old Yankee Candle, even in the totle... back from before they switched their candles to looking like Bath & Body Works candles. And omg I love the little suits everyone gets.
Maybe [Lyrics Jeanist] could be a reference to uhh. Best Jeanist from MHA? Crackpot idea take it or leave it. I didn't know Pipis was a real restaurant/food (???) I thought it was a reference to the McElroy brother's Vine. Pipis room.
I love how Spamton references the MLM/MLM (men who love men + multilevel marketing). confusion with his Businessman Loving Businessman. Lol. Also do you think the computer world being so populated with cats has to do with it being the internet? There was and still is a huge span of time where the internet was/is obsessed with cats. I Can Has Cheezburger, Not Even Doom Music/NEDM, cat videos on CZcams... Idk might be a thing??

Soy sauce and cigarettes, if I recall correctly. Which honestly, cigarettes on their own are unpleasant-smelling for me, so I don't think I even WANT to know how soy sauce affects things, LOL.

one thing that occurs to me is, this suggests some concerning things about the Dark World's ability to make anything people fear that _could not have happened in the Light World_ into reality

Probably more like in the same way one save file is "canon" to the other save files. They share many similarities, but ultimately these are different universes with different, non-intersecting timelines.

I will admit, for a long time I thought the whole “going still” thing was Kris being released from whoever was controlling them (contrary to those saying it was because they were being controlled to play the piano). I say this because they clearly can’t play the piano when we’re controlling them, but maybe what they are “remembering” is their ability to play the piano at all, which is why they play so obsessively afterward: they want to play while they can before we/the person controlling them comes back. It does seem that the piano represents Kris’ agency in some ways. Like in the first chapter, when they are unable to play the hospital piano, the nurse thinks they look a bit sick after, while in chapter 2 they look actively angered as noted by Susie. This, along with Kris being more actively expressive in chapter 2 as well as Lancer’s line that Kris “looks like they don’t care” when picking a team name in chapter 1, tells me that Kris might be gaining more and more of their agency as we play through the chapters.

Personally, I just can't agree with that interpretation. I don't believe Kris was controlled by anyone until we were thrust into their life in Chapter 1. To me, personally, it reads more as a trauma response and them using the piano to get their feelings out and also just being self-conscious about it. Noelle did describe it as if they remembered something, after all. But that's just my take!
