  • This webinar addressed several initiatives currently underway at TWI and NSIRC to progress engineering critical assessment (ECA) from the qualitative (is the structure safe, based on established best practice?) to quantitative (what is the probability of failure, and how does this impact on engineering risk?).
    The seminar presented progress on a number of current projects, including:
    - TWI Core Research Programme (CRP): A comparison between ‘top down’ (risk-based inspection/RBI) and ‘bottom-up’ (probabilistic fracture mechanics/PFM) approaches to reliability of pressure vessels and pressure piping, and the implications for codes and standards;
    - National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC): Probabilistic treatment of welding residual stress, and how this can be incorporated into PFM calculations;
    Industry-driven programmes;
    - Progress towards incorporating PFM into codes and standards.
