appreciate the test. Like I said, full auto dont do their justice but each to your own. I use my R8 with HDR PQ on, so it is 10bit 4k 422 instead of 8bit 420, overheating warning comes quickly if you are behind the camera and screen folded in. No overheating if screen flips out. Battery life at 4k 422 10bit is really poor but a 22w usb PD powerbank can effectively supply 10x the juice.
the canon stabilization was way better in both modes. regarding the noise, sony is know to denoise their footage and its very apparent, you can also raise denoise level in the canon. did you use both equal settings, shutter speed, aperture? i know you adjusted iso but i didnt hear of shutter speed if that was left on auto or manual adjustment. in auto canon tend to prefer to 1/100 sony prefers 1/50 and that can make a huge difference in low light.
Yeah, I just put it on Auto on both and that is all I did for this particular test, I will continue more in depth ones with different setttings as well. Both of these are great cameras IMO.. Thank you!😊😊
If you put a native Sony lens on the Sony, the stabilisation is quite a bit better. There’s some secret sauce on that Sony don’t share with third party lens makers. Also it would have been better without a stabilised lens on the Canon. When you ran the 12800 on the Sony were you in Slog as it’s only base ISO at that in Slog. So there was no second ISO if not in Slog. There’s next to no noise on that camera in Slog 3 at 12800. The Sony destroys the Canon in low light.
Amazing test, thanks. Wish more people did the same back to back comparisons. Well, they both have FF sensor, but Canon has 24MP while Sony has 12MP. Which means that Sony has substantially bigger pixel size. Bigger pixels collect more light. Hence the better low-light performance and dynamic range. Therefore Sony is a safer choice for vloggers and is a clear winner here. However, Canon R8 feels like a better do-it-all camera, both for stills and video. And is cheaper.
It’s apparent the zv-e1 has jumps and jerks when the frame reaches the end of the sensor and jumps over to another portion of the sensor to compensate. Not sure what people are seeing, but I do believe the dynamic active stabe is over-hyped.
Hey! I know you mentioned you were in auto mode for sony, but the colours on sony look so much more pleasing. The typical creamy sony look. Was the picture profile you shot was s cinetone? Or something else. Because I want to get the sony A7c and I'm unsure if that'll lool similar to yours, but I hope it will.
What pp they were shot at ? The problem with sony is inconsistence in colors, shooting indoors is a nightmare, the colors and skin tones looks terrible where Canon will thrive in any lighting scenario, yes the Sony has more dinamic range but that's isn't a deal breaker for me, Clog3 will have plenty dr for my daily usage, documenting my family and so on. I have shot with the zve1 and knowing my skin tones and my family's skin tone I can safely say that Canon is the best in that regard, giving such a pleasant look.
Great Question! I think I like the zve 1 slightly more for the S cinetone straight out of camera.. but honestly the R8 is a great deal, especially now you can get it around 1399 on sale or used! That is APSC range price! If battery life is important then the ZVE1 is better for that, but that does not really matter to me, I use dummy batteries in studio. leaning towards the ZVE1 as better for me, but it is a very slight edge..
I just don't like the look of the r8. I saw videos saying it was basically the same as the r6. Lol yea right, I don't like it though. Id rather have the m50 or the rp then the r8 from what I have seen
I returned my Zve1 and got the R8 mainly because of the skin tones, sony skin tones are freaking ugly, I mainly shoot family stuff and getting the R8 for half of the price was a wise decision.

Being a canon user I can see r8 is not even close Ze E1 annihilated canon

White balance is all over the place on the R8. EV1 definitely better
Love the enthusiasm but no ND filter and auto WB needs to be switched to manual to adjust and balance to each other.
Stab is better on the R8, and the E1 is equally better in lowlight. Pick your poison. Good comparison though. Thank you!

Sony color is great for white skin making it turn to brown which is not natural. Canon is best natural color for skin.

I returned my Zve1 and got the R8 mainly because of the skin tones, sony skin tones are freaking ugly, I mainly shoot family stuff and getting the R8 for half of the price was a wise decision.
