    I’ve been doing 18 hours not eating and 6 hour eating window for the past four days and I think you are very right about starving yourself is working for inflammation. I am feeling much better. I drink a bit of goat kefir in the mornings and some bone broth, I know they actually break the fast but I found it’s still working for me. My insides are absolutely cleansed and i slept so much better and felt so much better last couple of nights.

    Love your channel. Great information, well presented. I've been dealing with gut issues for about 5 years. First trip to primary care in 2018 was told to take omeprazole (got an eye-roll when I mentioned adrenal fatigue and slow gut motility). No mention of reflux, by the way. Went to see him again in 2019 as symptoms never went away, and was told to take omeprazole twice daily for 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, I found myself nauseous and even threw up once. A year later in 2020 (still not knowing I had SIBO) I got on a health kick eating lots of kale and broccoli to the point I ended up in the ER vomiting. The day before my ER trip I called my primary care doc and he prescribed a prescription strength antacid. Finally this year, after a CT scan to rule out anything serious, the lightbulb went off that I had SIBO (no thanks to any doctor I saw). I took a 4 week course of anti-microbials that totally alleviated symptoms.
    But it's been about another 4 weeks since I stopped taking the anti-microbial supplements, and some of that brain fog is starting to set back in. Long story short, I think I'm going to try the Elemental Diet. I understand the point you make about not ignoring the root cause, but in my case I started addressing the root cause about 4 years ago (way too much stress), but the SIBO hasn't budged. Maybe in a month or two I will update the results.

      @@onlyonearmy2521 Still battling, but here's what I've learned. I couldn't stick with Elemental more than a few days. Felt great while doing it, but didn't have the willpower. But it turns out it wasn't needed. The anti-microbials were sufficient to eradicate SIBO. Took me another year to realize that SIBO was the easy part. Fixing the microbiome in the large intestine is the hard part. I'm just starting that journey now. It's the opposite approach compared to SIBO. Rather than killing things off, you need to nurture and grow the microbiome. Build up bacterial diversity => tolerate fiber + fodmaps => make more short chain fatty acids => better health. I think the key to doing that is with homemade fermented foods. Will check back in another 2 years and let you know how it went.

    I didn’t do ED to eradicate the sibo… I did it to reduce horrible reactions to food and give myself a much needed break while I worked on my sibo. For me it was such a relief to not have to think about what I could and couldn’t eat, having to constantly cook, having to think about what supplements to take to help me digest… it was a massive help and it didn’t taste bad at all. It also wasn’t miserable.
    If someone goes in thinking it’s some sort of cute all, they will be horribly disappointed… but if they go in looking at this as a tool, it can be helpful.
    Agreed the marketing is awful… dr ruscio saying it’s such a savior for people… you know that desperate people with Sibo will be all over it and also people without sibo will use it as a weight loss tool which is not it’s intent. People need to do research, talk to their doc or practitioner so they know what’s best for them individually.
    I don’t find this rant helpful at all… a more objective view would be much more helpful

    Very thought provoking video - thanks Nikki. I agree with the concern around the ED marketing. I use it with some clients but am always looking for/treating underlying causes and also working to rebuild the microbiome as well. So I think the ED certainly has its place, but there is a lot of work outside of it that needs doing as well. It's not a magic bullet. Also, I heard Dr Ruscio making some dubious claims about probiotics which were obviously a way to sell his own brand of probiotics rather than people buying evidence based strains.

    Maybe the high eradication rate is due to the MCTs present helping to eliminate the pathogenic bacteria? If it's just like a fast like you're saying, maybe people that aren't "cured" can experience higher eradication rates if they took more effective antifungals/antimicrobials during their elemental dieting? Just a thought.

    To your point about starving the body and putting it in anti-inflammatory/recovery mode, I tried a Medical Medium Mono Cleanse out of desperation. It was basically celery juice, water with lemon juice, and plain steamed potatoes for 3 days (recommended for 7). Much of my bloating and cramping decreased (I'd say 65-70% down). I don't think I could do it for 7 days because you have to eat like 5 pounds of potatoes a day to hit at least 1700 calories and you feel like you're starving. However the reduction of extreme bloating and trapped gas was worth it. Finally got a positive SIBO test & waiting on my doctor to tell me what's next.

    Good to see this perspective Dr, as I was considering the ED based on methane SIBO reading of 30, 1 round of rifaximin which seemed to help with the painful gases/bloating, but not constipation… and then the gases have come back…
    I would really like to consider fasting… but my issue is the bloating starts if I go empty for more than say 6 hours long and I also have a pelvic / perineal pain condition which then worsens due to shooting gases hitting the perineum etc… and then I end up having to eat some peppermint gel capsule/warm water tea/worst case - a painkiller… which defeats the whole SIBO… so, wonder how I can incorporate fasting effectively…

    • @Padraigp
      @Padraigp Před 8 měsíci

      I am pretty sure you're allowed drink herbals during the fast. So you could drink all the peppermint and ginger tea during the fasting period. You can have coffee and lemon juice and others things that don't raise your blood sugar significantly.. so you dont have to not ingest anything... id day you could even eat things like sour kraut and green leaves like herbs and bitter greens that stimulate your digestive things. Just not a whole huge meal of greens ...

    I wonder if sometimes failure of elemental diet (and by 'failure', I mean : catastrophic results with doubled gas levels, for example) could sometimes be explained by the possibility of a proximal SIBO.
    I don't know if you think the distinction between proximal and distal SIBO is relevant, but one could imagine that a high proliferation could feed on the ED liquid, without allowing time for it to be absorbed. And I would point out that this would only concern ED formulas/recipes with type of sugar, because on the other hand I've seen a brand of ED that proposes a dextrose free formula, and that states that this dextrose free formula is advised in case of suspicion of a proximal SIBO. This is a theory, and I've come across testimonials like this before in the 'SIBO space' (and God knows we read a lot of rubbish there😉). So...what do you think about it ?
    Thank you very much (you have become my #1 reference for digestive problems!).

    I did a 14-day fast 5 years ago involving broths, vegetables juices, and anti parasite and anti microbial herbs, and enemas, this cleared my digestive issues for 1-year… they came back due to me stupidly going back to regularly eating pizza and drinking beer… also I wasn’t drinking the elemental diet shakes which are loaded with sugars or sugar alternatives… people aren’t getting anywhere with elemental diet probably because these shakes are essentially protein shakes of questionable quality and priced extortionately… also, it’s not such a big deal gradually returning to eating a normal diet after fasting… I respect the honest content and knowledge on this channel though, I do think that people should go with their instincts, anyway, the above fast worked for me, it maybe be anecdotal but it’s a real life experience (these seem to be lacking these days, just a bunch of well meaning and semi-well meaning doctors and naturopaths, who have never experienced any issues, giving advice)
