Is There Such a Thing as "The One"? Does God Predestine Your Spouse?

  • (My Newest Book) The One: How to Know and Trust God’s Sovereign Plan for Your Future Marriage: amzn.to/2HIbuXa
    Is there such a a thing as the one? Does god predestine your spouse? Does God plan who you will marry? Does God choose your husband or wife? Does God choose your mate?
    These are complicated questions that go beyond the topic of relationships and are really more theological. If you are a Calvinist, you must say that God plans your marriage because he plans everything. If you are an Arminian, you will say that God does not plan who you who you will marry because man's free will is what determines the outcomes.
    Is there such a thing as the one? You will answer this question differently based upon your understanding of God's sovereignty and man's free will. I believe that God does choose your spouse but he will bring about "the one" through you making free choices.
    However, I respect that some do not believe in "the one" and say there is no such thing because they have a different understanding of what the Bible says about God's will and man's will.
    My biggest point is that you should make sure you are basing your beliefs on Scripture and what the Bible actually says rather than your personal opinion about "Is there such a thing as the one?"

    When God gives you a dream...you will know. There will be no question. When God tells you something, its personal...he will make sure that you have understood that its definitely from him. My sheep know my voice. Believe and don't doubt. God knows what you will think before you think it, what you will say before you say it...Isaiah 46:10, he declares the end from the beginning. He can and will show you who you will marry, if its in his will...but you got to step close to him first and ask him. Just think it or say it. He knows you already. Hes an awesome God.

      Adoknight Official that is not entirely true. Read the whole chapter with the help of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit will show you that this commandment, "seek ye first...," is appropriate and applicable to all occasions, even on waiting on God, to know His choice of a spouse and His timing of fulfilling that holy calling in each of us, and any other activities, not according to our works or merit, but according to God's purpose and grace which was given each of us in Christ before time began, for the mere reason that He is our Father and also that we are prone bc of our sinful and or fleshly nature or the devil deceiving us at taking matters in our hands, instead of trusting God, and leaning on our understanding, to solve the situations challenges difficulties hardships problems and i should add, which are a fabric of our spiritual growth and well- being in Christ, that we encounter in our relationships with things, ideas and people.
      Throughout scripture God admonishes, obey my voice and I will be your God. Let us take God at His word. Father in Jesus name let it be unto each of us according to Your word, accordin Your purpose and grace which was given each of us in Christ before time began!

    My husband and I have been married for 12 years. It's only been in the last 2 years that we've come to realize how perfectly we compliment one another! We married in our 40's, both of us having very different lives, but both of our lives had been tumultuous. We'd both been through different hells. Our marriage was tested HARD recently, from severe bullying by extended family members. We went to couple's therapy. Our therapist is a former Pastor. We realize now how we are healing each other, protecting each other, learning together, celebrating our victories, and fixing our mistakes.
    Yes, God made me for him. And God made him for me. It's not always easy, and it's rarely perfect, but we feel God beaming at us as we struggle TOGETHER.
    Blessed and thankful.

    I am praying for and listening for my husband. I met someone who was obsessed with the idea of the one and used that and God as a scapegoat for his CLEAR bad behavior in relationships and his previous marriage. I saw him get super stressed over the idea of 'the one' ...and the spirit of that reminded me a lot of what I used to encounter in the new age. God is not a God of confusion. Focus on drawing near to God and his will- pray to be a wife (or husband). Pray for your future spouse..walk in the Spirit and you will know them when you see him. I believe God placed the desire to be a wife on my heart so I am confident that I will be. :) But Satan wants to whisper to God's children,"It's too late, etc." so we rush into the wrong thing and accept a counterfeit. BE STILL and God will go before you!

    I was hesitant to like this one until you clarified what “the one” meant to you. Yes you said it wonderfully. The one isn’t the person God has for you that you’ll never have problems with or makes you “feel a certain special way” since we know that emotions can be tracked to just about anyone. What God DOES have for us who are called to marry is the right person for the right season that will help us accomplish God’s will for our lives. Not saying emotions and decision making is irrelevant here, but rather that the ultimate purpose of every marriage is for both parties to enhance each other and bring each other closer to their God given destiny, glorifying Him in the process. The more we live on our knees, the more we see who God has for us

      @@oomybeauty...you're not going to like this response, but God only allow divorce for adultery, and he only allows separation if the departing party is a non believer... but God still beholds them to the spouse. people say that God wouldn't do that, but God says he does, and he will. read Luke 45:7, read John 3:16.... think about it, does anything happen without God's knowledge? isn't our lives predestined? What does this mean? our problem is we try to apply human logic, and common sense to God's thinking... his thinking is above ours, we will never understand his thinking... all of this is written, why do we think otherwise? ... God tests us, he puts us through extreme trials... and yet, we think that God doesn't know or ordain, when God is behind it all... you say these things are demonic, not a Christian marriage, but what does Eph.6:10-20 tell/teach us... • @gabbi3067
    @gabbi3067 Před 6 lety +311

    If God’s will is sovereign, then you could say that God “determines” who’s going to Hell. But the Bible says in 2 Peter 3:9 that it’s not God’s will that any man should perish. If sending people to Hell is not God’s will, yet people still go there, then that means that people send themselves there. God talks about us having free will all throughout the Bible. Just because He knows what’s going to happen doesn’t mean that He orchestrates all of those events. Similarly, I believe that people have the choice to do what they want and marry who they want, even if that’s not the person that God had in mind. If one person chooses not to marry the one that God has chosen for him/her (thereby leaving their God-chosen potential spouse without a husband/wife) I believe that God can choose someone else for the person whose original future husband/wife is now taken.
    The Bible says that God can turn any situation around for good. We mess us and God re-routes us. That’s what I believe. Like you said, it’s complicated and it would take more studying but with the dynamics of free choice, I don’t see how God could possibly get His way in everything. At the end of time, God’s plans will ultimately prevail (eternal bliss for those who chose Jesus), but in this life and right here in a sinful world, people constantly make the wrong choices. If people can choose to make the wrong choices in so many areas, why would choosing the wrong spouse be any different?
    Edit: In John 14:30 the Bible says that Satan is the god of this world...in the same verse the Bible does says that Satan has no power over Him (Jesus), nonetheless, Satan has some kind of rule over this world. Satan can’t control believers but the influence of sin is still there and as long as someone is sinning (disobedience is a sin as well) that person is not walking in God’s will because God hates sin. I’ve never been on board with the Calvinist view because I feel that the Bible has numerous examples of people choosing to do their own thing and facing the dire consequences. But the hope is that God can transform the lives of those who turn to Him and rely wholeheartedly on Him.

    I've been with the one for 15 years, and believe me, the odds were stacked against us ever knowing each other that it took several huge barriers to be moved that ONLY God could have done it. There was no prayer, no faith, no desire to know the one. This was college and party time, yet we were meant to find each other like two magnets. We are imperfect for each other and come from different Christian denominations but we complement each other like a well oiled machine. You won't know it til years after you find the one: you'll recognize who, what, and how you got to meet and know the one, you will laugh and be shocked at how messy and MAYBE unChristian-like the whole process was. Depending how dense you are, God will literally use the least expected people and situations to impose His will. You're on His timeline and His stage, stick to the script.

    I believe that God has predestined a spouse for those who are called for marriage. Maybe it's difficult to understand how things happen with the sovereign will of God and man's free will, but God said in His words - "Delight in me and I will give you the desires of your heart. For it is I who gave you those desires." Indeed God is sovereign and it's up to us to listen to Him or not if we want to be with the person He prepared for us.

    God told me who "the one" was through an angel... he literally said "he's the one". I didnt believe it at first, but I prayed for confirmation over & over. I received confirmation through the bible, everytime I opened it for a while all he led me to was scriptures about Angel's & them speaking to God's people. I also, asked him if he is the one let him message me now awhile back, I know that's far fetched but it happened. I tried going another way, being with another guy... but he kept leading me back to him. Even in my worst state, God was still sending me signs. We're not married yet, things arent perfect right now, but I think we both believe in our spirit we're meant to be together. I dont know why. But after going against what God told me first, I would rather trust him with this & it hurt me than not & it hurt me. I truly believe God sent him & for some heavenly reason let me know he was the one.

    I agree with your last point. I have personally found that many people who are resistant to this idea of "the one," they assume that people who do believe in "the one," have unrealistic expectations of this person. Meaning, they think that we think we expect that person to be Mr. or Ms. Perfect. But, we know that the ONLY perfect person was Yeshua our Messiah.
    To me, for someone to be "the one" does NOT mean they're perfect. It means that the person, with all they are, with all their strengths and shortcomings, are compatible with my strengths and shortcomings. To me, them being "the one" does NOT mean I give an excuse to divorce them later because they turned out to be imperfect (which is what opponents to the idea of "the one" believe). Rather, it means that because I appreciate that God took the time to make the right person for me, I honor that gift by being diligent to nurture and maintain that relationship. Meaning, scripture teaches that we ought to be good stewards of what He gives us. The marriage relationship, I believe is one of those things we should be a good steward of.

    You are very correct!! If u are living a holy life and seeking God's will then when u meet someone u will be able to discern and screen them through the word of God that is already told u what to look for in a mate....The problem is, if u are not living holy then your will is not surrendered to the Lord Jesus Christ and your discernment is tossed out the window and u will screen a potential mate through the flesh and soul only.....If u are led by the Spirit u will run into that person and u will know without a doubt through the counsel of the Holyspirit if the choice is of God....I must meet that criteria of godly living to receive that kind of mate for that other person seeking God will be deserving of the same....If marriage is ordained by God for u and u follow his will it will happen...My parents were not saved when they met and they got saved later...God's will was still accomplished sovereignly in that matter....They did not know God and they were equally yoked sinners....They became equally yoked saints.....But, if u have the instruction prior to marriage and u are born again then seek God and hear his heart for u.....I was married and he was a believer and so was I....He was bound by pornography and committed adultery on me and I did not get the counsel of God on these things early on.....I wanted to be married!!!! I did not know the bondages he had and he divorced me ...I was not unfaithful so I am free to get the one for me....God was sovereign even in my divorce.....God didn't want unfaithfulness but he knew all of that would happen....I believe I will ultimately meet my match for the glory of God and his purpose....So God is sovereign and brings things to pass ....Hold on...It ain't over yet!!!!

      Romans 9: What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all!15 For he says to Moses,
      “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
      and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”[f]
      16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. 17 For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”[g] 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.
      19 One of you will say to me: “Then why does God still blame us? For who is able to resist his will?”20 But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’”[h] 21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?
      22 What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patiencethe objects of his wrath-prepared for destruction?23 What if he did this to make the riches of his gloryknown to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory-

    In the Biblical couples in the case of Rebecca where the servant prayed for a wife for Isaac and as soon as soon as the servant stop praying, Rebecca came out met the criteria symbolizing that was who God wanted Isaac to marry. Even the same with Jacob and Rachel as soon as he saw her he loved her. I mean he got tricked into marrying Leah (hence the free choice) but he still ended up marrying Rachel. And even when Esther married the king, even Mordecai said that she was chosen or became queen for a time such as this. So I do feel that God can choose one.

I guess it was additionally encouraging for me to hear becos i thought God had also revealed to me my future husband whom i now also admire. However, you said to look at the circumstances as well and not be too caught up in what God has revealed. Based on circumstances, things are quite disappointing becos from a great friendship where we had liked each other before(i asked him directly and he said he did and even thought of a possible future tgt but he feel not the time now as both of us were not ready). Afterwards, i guessed i ruined it by being too blunt with my feelings that i poured out to him which made him feel forced. I guess its due to my impatience. I had apologised and explained to him and tried to keep as much distance to make sure he doesnt misunderstand me as forcing him again. Things has been stagnant for many months now but i also know God might still need to do His work. What do you think are the chances of us getting together in the end? I feel i need some counsel

    You've dealt with this supremely difficult and complex situation brilliantly. It's not possible to deal with it quickly, but you've used the short time you have really well. I've got more answers to life's questions than I could ever imagine, but I always struggle with this one. It would be easier if I like many other people hadn't been sent the wrong way by the endless amount of false information from the media. The films and dramas we watch would generally suggest the opposite to God's word and comes up with ludicrous statements such as "There's plenty more fish in the sea". When I first met my wife, (who is now my ex wife) I prayed about it as usual and the Lord just said "She's the one." I'd waited 15 years for her and was married 25 years. She went back into the world.
    I discovered this scripture yesterday from the Living Bible instead of my usual KJV/NKJV but accepting it is like taking in the hook, line and sinker. Psalm 139:16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.

      Hey brother, it’s been some time since you posted. I’m about to get married in June. I trust that the Lord is answering your prayers. I pray that you know that your wife will not be the solution to your struggle with sexual lust. You must trust that Jesus is the solution. There is no sin Jesus didn’t die for. He doesn’t intend for us to live in bondage. His way of purity is the truth and it is much better than the way of this world, but I confess that the world is very tempting. Trust in the guidance of the Spirit. I believe he will reveal to you a woman who can fit the position. It’s your job to love her the way Christ has loved you, to the best of your ability. God bless.

Now I'm not so sure. Such a hard concept of God's sovereignty vs free will. But one thing is certain. If I expect to have a great second marriage, I must approach it with a servants heart looking to improve someone else's life and stop focusing on my own. Since our spouse isn't really our final destiny, I believe we will learn the lessons we're meant to learn, or teach the ones we're meant to teach, but there isn't "the one" to do that with.

      Agreed. The plague of narcissism is more rampant than ever around the world, propagated and accelerated by: technology, social media, instant gratification, and overall increase in lawlessness and godless cultural thought. Paul warned Timothy that near the end, it was be this way. We the Church need to be vigilant in our being reminded of that, and do all we can to avoid being trapped in those cycles. "Self" is the new idol of choice today. Nothing new under the sun. "Self" was Lucifer's idol of choice when the first sin was ever conceived. Its close-cousin "Pride" rides shotgun with "self-worship." What was Jesus' command to anyone who might follow Him? Right off the bat... "He must DENY HIMSELF and take up his cross and follow Me." Jesus made it clear that "self" is the primary obstacle getting in the way of every man or woman... and the God that created them and loves them.

    And those He predestined, He also called; those He called, He also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. - Romans 8:30 The life of every believer of Jesus Christ has already been predestined by God. He knows everything about us, I mean if the hairs on our head are all literally numbered by Him of course it's not hard to believe that He knows who we are predestined to marry. I'm so glad to see someone else believes that God does have a role to play in who we marry and it's not just coincidence it's a predestined spouse. I've always believed in a predestined spouse, the one and only. The part people get confused about is the waiting and trusting in God part. But there again we can be assured that God makes all things beautiful in it's time and in His time He will beautify that aspect of our lives if we can be patient enough to trust Him. He's a good and faithful Father who desires the best for His children.

    Thank you very much Mark, for this video. I definitely agree with you. Many years ago I read a book called 'God is a Matchmaker' by Derek Prince who had a very powerful, international ministry. In this book he talks about how God lead him to his frist wife and after she died. he was lead to his second wife, both who were absolutely excellent women of God, praying, godly wives who served alongside Derek Prince in his ministry and who were a pillars of strength and support to that ministry. I also believe that in order to be led of God to the person God knows will be best suited to you, you have to surrender your free will to HIM and walk in obedience to His Word, and desire His will for your life - living a godly life.. You can't be doing your own thing out there, in your own way and then expect God to suddenly break into your world and point the one out....if God just dropped the best spouse into your world, would you be ready, and prepared to handle this person, and the responsibility of marriage? I have heard the testimonies of several godly couples and how they spent time praying for a godly mate, someone who God knew would be the best fit, and through patience, faithfully serving God, and continuously praying, seeking God's will, they were eventually directed and guided to that specific person. If you invite God to be part of this area in your life, HE will be faithful to lead and guide on the right path so you can connect with the one He has prepared for you. I am 54 years old, never married and no kids but as a single I choose to walk in Gods will for my life, and in obedience to His Word, knowing He will work things for me eventually. God bless you!

      There is a sovereign will and anythin in that we will not miss

  • @The4Tifier
    @The4Tifier Před 6 lety +76

    In terms of man's free will, I'm going to leave this comment here for the sake of anyone who needs Biblical context on free will;
    It has been clear since Genesis that man has free will. This is why God placed the Forbidden Tree in the Garden of Eden; *because how can man willingly choose to follow God if there is no other choice*, and *how can man be judged for their sins (thus needing Jesus as their savior) if God is the one who allowed Sin into the world by making Adam and Eve sin?
    Even so, we see throughout time and the Bible that man alone is not able to do anything good because of their sinful nature as a result of The Fall. This is why God divinely intervenes and gives Man the Law in the Old Testament so that His people are not completely destroyed physically, mentally and spiritually like other sinful nations which fell as quickly as they rose.
    It is because of this total depravity that God sent His Son so that not only would we be saved from our sinful nature and be re-united with God, but also for God to do His will through us. How do we do this? Well, Jesus tells us in scripture how he was able to do what he did;
    John 5: 19
    "Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does..."
    John 6: 38
    "For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me..."
    John 8: 28
    "...you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me."
    Jesus is saying that everything he does, every action and word, is the Will of God; nothing He does is of his own will. While Jesus certainly would have had free will, and even expresses this in the Garden before he is taken to his crucifixion (not by will, but yours be done), he humbly submitted to God's will in all things.
    This is what we Christians should do as well. How do we do this? First, by fulling accepting that there is absolutely nothing good we can do on our own. Even if it is a "good" thing, like donating to charity or volunteering, on our own we simply do this to "feel good", to earn other's approval and/or to earn God's approval. Yet once again, there is nothing good we can do on our own, so God can never be pleased with that;
    Ephesians 2: 8-10
    For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
    Instead, we must accept God's incredible grace and unconditional love, and dedicate our lives to learning more about this love so that we can better love God and others in all things that we do. We do this by reading the Bible and following God's commands.
