Zoom G1X FOUR: Cab simulations and "The Secret"

- Spoiler alert: The secret is the cab mic setting. Cabinet simulations seem to vary wildly in their influence on tone, but on the G1 FOUR it's pretty clear that the mic function makes all the difference.

I have seen somebody commented about this on his previous video... Nice of you to listen to others and show a better demo... Cheers mate
Yeah cool man, and if you have any other suggestions I'm always interested :) Gearfacts
Don't stop making making these videos you are very informative thanks man so helpful
Hah, I get this message just when I was feeling really weary of making CZcams videos. Now I'm motivated again - thanks TSWHM :)
No sure why no one ever seems to be able to dial in good crunch in zoom videos. It's possible, believe me. I have the g1xon, and you can get excellent sounding overdrive/distortion/crunch if you actually tweak the settings yourself instead of relying on the preset patches, whether you want light od for blues, solid for rock, or crazy for metal. No wonder comments always say how cheap they sound. But they don't if you know what you're doing.
Yep that's true. The Zoom pedal I've kept long-term is the original 3030 from 1994 which I've tweaked endlessly. Love it.
@@gearfacts My g1xon produces some great sounds when tweaked well..
@@WallyPeterson The trick is mixing the od's and distortions with the Graphic EQ.
@@karrazaki89 Yeah. The presets, which is all that was shown in this video apart from the cab switching, do little to bring out the charm in anyone's rig #gearfacts
@@JosephEarly That's what I do! Don't forget to watch my tutorial :) #gearfacts
The pedal was released in 2019 but the intro is from the 90's
Taken as a compliment :)

Awesome man, enjoy :) #gearfacts
Hi friend,
Thank you for sharing. Could we create more effect from 50-59 slot? If ok, how can we do it?
ThichVongCo I think you can kinky save 50 patches but I might check the manual about that. Thanks for watching Gearfacts:)
It just arrived, thanks for the guide.
Awesome man #gearfacts
How do I get the effect at 1:43 to use the expression pedal as a pitch shifter/wah with the distortion. I can’t figure it out and that was a big selling point on the unit for me, as I just bought it. Thanks
I don't have this pedal anymore but I think you can select the expression pedal as an 'effect' in the chain, so it occupies its own slot beside the other effects. Then you go in and edit it, and pitch is one of the choices. Or try editing your pitch effect and seeing if you can assign it to the expression pedal. Or, last suggestion, find a preset patch that uses the expression to control pitch, then build your sound around by editing the other effects.
@@gearfacts thank you so much I figured it out!
Can someone explain what the cabinet mic setting actually means? Does it simulate micing the amp rather than a direct feed?
Yep, that's exactly what it does
Does this have a pedal that allows to change octaves and make a 6 string sound like a bass?
It does, but the sound is not that much like a bass guitar...
Hi!
Can you add a Bass amp or effect (from B1 four) via library software to the G1 four?
Or are they exclusive to each unit?
Sadly no, they are mutually exclusive :( Gearfacts
Which means of course, you have to program the B1x4 from the ground up.
Can you tell me please if the Zoom G1X4 has the same effects included as the Zoom MS-70CDR ?
Not quite all of them, but it covers as much of the same ground as any audience would be able to hear :) #gearfacts
i can't really see the tones in the intro in your camera, but sounds great! I like the mic amp settings, didn't really realize that option before. Trying to figure out when I want to use that or not - ill play around
My final bit of advice if I may - Go with what sounds good to YOUR ears. Since I've reviewed this pedal and a few others, I've found that there are people out there who casually bully others into going with convention rather than their own pleasure in sound. I call them Nazis :) #Gearfacts
In the old G1Xon (the one I have) there is a section in the patch settings to adjust the expression pedal. When you make a patch with say: overdrive, tremolo and delay you can scroll through different exp pdl funtions like drive, tremolo speed, trem depth, delay mix, delay time etc. You can also program the amount for heel down and toe down ( like delay time 200ms heel down and 800ms toe down) I'm sure this pedal must have these functions. Try it out.
A nice one is reverse delay with the exp pedal controlling the delay mix 0% to mix 100% so you can adjust this effect with the expression pedal and go from a normal sound to psychedelic Hendrix on the fly.
Ahhh ok ...I was finding the expression pedal to be a bit limited so this is good information. Thanks Case :) Gearfacts
@@gearfacts per patch the expression pedal can only have one of these functions but it's up to you what it does.
I have made a patch where the expression pedal only gives a bit of volume boost for a solo, 1 patch where it controlls the speed of the Leslie Box fx (with ramp up an break effect) 1 patch with Tape Delay time where you hear the 'analog' effect of the sound going up or down the moment when you use the expression pedal and change the tape delay time. etc etc.
It may all sound a bit complicated but once you know where to adjust these expression pedal settings, it's a piece of cake.
@@gearfacts Hmm... I just downloaded the fx list from the Zoom site and I think what I said is not possible with this new pedal. There's a special 'expression pedal fx section' with a drive, a delay etc. that you can controle with the exp. pedal but not all fx (like Reverse Delay which van be controlled with exp pdl on the old G1Xon.) I really think this is a step back compared to the G1Xon I have...
Sorry for giving you the wrong info.
There are some new fx in the G1Xfour that are very nice but I'm not sure about the overall functionality.
I'll probably buy one anyway.
I owned zoom g3xn which I think is similar with g1xfour, I already compared it with g1xon. The pedal function is rather dissapointing, you can't choose which parameter you want to control with the pedal and the effect than can use the pedal is limited on the Pedal effect category only. But the drive, amp and cabinet is far better than g1xon. Still if G1xFour avalaible in my country I'd buy one because of its compact size & can be powered with batteries. And probably I'm going to sell my g3xn.
@@bluesound666 Thanks.
I wanted to buy one right away but maybe I'll wait and see if there will be some updates and/or more 'pedal fx' available in the sound lab software. I use the G1Xon mainly for some modulation and delay/reverb fx
Gearfact can you make a demo how to set an ambient effect or shimverb to this pedal?thank you
Sorry Ariel, it's gone now ...I only get these instruments for a short time :)
cant figure out how to move a patch to another slot, trying to rearrange them, is that possible to be done in the unit itself? anyone thanks!
Yes I think you choose 'copy' from the main menu. There might even be a swap option. Sorry I'm not quite sure, I haven't had this pedal for a while :)
Most of the videos I've seen on this pedal are of people using electric guitars. I know it has an acoustic simulator, but do you have any suggestions on which settings to use when making a new patch with a good tone for an acoustic guitar running through a PA system? Just a good sound with some subtle added effects to make it stand out without going overboard?
Soft chorus and a short, tight reverb works well imho :)

Just bought the G1XFour.....can I make my own Bank of patches in the empty Bank 5 and if so how do I add patches to say empty bank 50
Yes, you can add your own patches. Download the manual for instructions on how to save them. I highly recommend you hook it up to a computer if you're able- It's MUCH easier than trying to use the pedal interface.
Awesome review bro. Question. What cables do i need to connect it to a computer? Thanks in advance bro. Cheersss!!!!
Micro USB to ordinary USB :)
I use this thing on my phone. It's pretty amazing, if you haven't bought one.
Ok, so for example, I think that few presets sound bad and after turning MIC on I found those sound ok. So can I overwrite them? Save changes I made? For example: preset 11 sounded bad, I turned MIC on, overwritten that and the next time I choose preset no. 11 it would sound great with MIC on. Can I do that?
Changes should save automatically unless you specifically override that fiction in the utilities menu.
@@gearfacts Ok, thank you :) Just ordered one. Let's see how it works :)
If you look under the front end of the pedal on the g1x fours, there’s a little button that isn’t pressed by the pedal. What does that do?
Hmm, I didn't notice it at the time. Nothing in the manual about it?
Not that I saw
Yes! That is what I was talking about! The the cab sim in any digital device is crucial to sound more like a guitar amp (captured by a mic). In the Zoom N series you can blend between a dynamic or a condenser mic and cut or boost some of the high and low frequencies! Very good man!
Cool man! I'm grateful that you made this suggestion, I think the subject is important and the demo turned out quite well. All I've got to do now is learn how to play guitar properly haha :) GF
sounds muffled in the overdriven parts, what amplifier did you use?
It was a studio monitor. That is the actual sound of the G1xFOUR. Check out my recent upload comparing it to the analog Zoom 3030, it reveals a big difference. Thanks for watching Gearfacts :)
About the Mic On/off... is this also true for the B1Xfour?
Yes it is. Let your ears be the guide, though. Many would have you believe that there's only ONE way to set up a sound. Some of my favorite sounds have no amp/mic simulation. Go with what makes you smile :) #gearfacts
Being accustomed to Line 6 AIR technology, I don’t underestimate how important this feature is. As much as I enjoy hearing all the standard sounds in this box, I hope someone will specify whether or not it includes all the same effects that were uploaded to the 3030 in the 90s - or has Zoom done away with them?
Sorry I missed this excellent question when you posted it a year ago. As a person who loves the zoom 3030 I can say no, there are lots of sounds from that wonderful old pedal that are missing on the G1xFOUR :(
Thank you
Can you make a vid on how to create a empty patch, ? so that when i would like to switch from one to another i dont have to click the foot stomp 100 times to find a new patch in the middle of a song. So going from clean to solo to boost or something like that. It would be easier to find on the fly.
I don’t know if it helps but in this (great) video he makes an empty patch by setting all of the blocks to ‘bypass’
How do you switch from clean to distorted?
Create your clean sound, then copy it to the next patch so you have two identical clean sounds. Then go to the second patch and add a distortion effect. You can then switch between the two as if you were just switching on a distortion pedal :) #gearfacts
Which is better the zoom g1x four or the mooer ge-150?
Tough choice, I think I'd go for the Zoom ...I'd have to do a side-by-side comparison though :) #gearfacts
What would be the use of the mic off setting? Also, between this and the Mooer GE100 which one would be better?
Definitely the Zoom imho :) #Gearfacts
Thanks! Really appreciate it
Gearfacts is zoom better?
If you play to an amplifier, turning mic on or off will change the tone. He demonstrates this in the video. It will not affect playback to headphones as much.
The LCD screen on the unit can barely be read by viewers.
100% fair comment. My videos are a bit more professional these days.
Is the Mic on or off just a preference or is there some benefit to either one when recording?
Some ppl insist it has to be ON but keep and open mind and let your ears decide. I've had some superb patches that didn't involve the mic function or even any kind of amp simulation :) #gearfacts
If you turn it off you are just getting direct signal from the amp. Then you can use an IR of your own choice in your DAW. With the mic on there is no need for an IR.... mic off and direct input sounds terrible without an impulse response
@@END3RCAM what is the difference between turning on the cab sim effects but setting the mic off. To not Having cab effects on at all, to having mic on? That’s 3 different setting with 3 different sounds but what they are supposed to be?
im conecting the zoom to a champ 20 and sounded better with mic on? i though it was supposed to be off when connected directly to an amp...
Not necessarily, you’ve just got to go with what your ears are telling you. Don’t let other people dictate what is “right” or “correct”, the only opinion t hat really matters is yours :)
Could you explain what is the configuration for the effect in 1:39, please?
I haven't got the pedal anymore sorry, it was probably a preset though.
You can tell by looking at the screen. He's lit it really nice and bright so it's extra easy to read!
Hi if i want to use Zoom g1 Four with My headphones i need to use the cab simulation and the amp simulation or online the cab simulation. Thanks
Yes most people agree that you need to have the cab sim on. Trust your ears though. I've found some patches just sound clearer and brighter without cab sim. Don't assume you 'must' do anything, if you like the sound, then it's a good sound. It's what makes YOU smile that matters when it comes to guitar tone :)
Gearfacts Thanks, but i want to know if i have to use also an amp simulation or is ok to use only the cab simulation.
Should do i turn on cab sim play on solid state amp??
Sometimes. It's absolutely important that you go with whatever sounds good to YOUR ears. Many guitarists are pushy and will tell you what sounds good as if they know everything - forget about that, go with what sounds good to you and own it :)
Nice Vid! How can i erase an effect? i just see an image with a hand on black, but wich button do i have to press? i hope was clear
Hi Ivan, you can't erase an effect, you have to scroll through until you fill the slot with the "No effect" symbol. I think. I actually haven't had this pedal for a long time
@@gearfacts Thanks! That's works. 😀
Gotta question...Based on going direct to the PA....To maybe move the G1Four up a notch in tone...can using a DI or a Tube DI like a Art MP Tube DI help? The G1Four sounds good but it is getting on in age, Just trying to save a few buck by upgrading the sound chain :) I mean the next option is a UA Dream 65 but its $350, I own the G1Four adding another $100-150 to upgrade the tone makes sense :)
Yep that’d help I think. Also try a Nux multi-fx if you can, I found their tone to be much more ‘classic’ than Zoom.
I'm confused...If I'm runing this direct to a PA does the cab mic'ing need to be on or off?
Usually you would leave it on, but try it both ways and let your ears choose.
Does it have a compressor pedal?
Yes it has two kinds of compression :) #gearfacts

Yep I like them too. The 3030 was my favorite :) #gearfacts
OK @@gearfacts. Even though I just wrote this in my own comment thread, I will bring it up here again. How much of what was uploaded into the 3030 is in this or the B version?
@@Shred_The_Weapon This is a good and relevant question! The FOUR has *almost* everything that the 3030 does and lots of additional stuff. However, it does it all very differently. Many would argue (me included) that the analog drive system in the 3030 sounds better even though it only has 8 drive sounds to choose from. There's one other BIG omission in the FOUR and every other Zoom guitar unit since the 3030: The STEP effect. Pedals of many brands have it, but only the 3030 allows you to smooth the edges of each step so you can create a beautiful oscillating lead sound which is superb for solos with long notes and deep bends. I have never heard this sound on any other effects unit, and I miss it deeply! Good to hear from you again, STW!

No, it has no separate or dedicated bass settings. They make a bass version of the G1FOUR though, it looks the same just with a red chassis.

Not really. You could probably form one with a blend of pitch shift and other effects. If you want a mind-blowing bass simulator, track down a Boss GT5. They're old but they last forever and there's a preset that is a totally thumping bass sound. I think I demonstrated it in one of my early videos :) Gearfacts

Can anyone play solos and make the strings scream? I don't need a pedal to play a chord
I do. Need a pedal for chords, I mean. My soloing is even worse :/
So the amp mic is off on all the factory presets?
Weirdly, yes
@@gearfacts I’m actually glad to hear that, I was thinking all these presets sound terrible.
@@todds5956 I know right! That was kind of a big controversy when this pedal was released, everyone was saying "What has Zoom done here, it sounds so gutless!"

A fair point indeed. This was preceded with a general demo video which covers wider ground ...the pedal is still very distortion-oriented though, it seems to always be pulling in that direction.

I have read somewhere that if you link the pedalboard to an ampli, "Mic" emulation ( and maybe "Ampli" emulation too ) should be set to "Off". And when used with a full range loudspeaker, public address or with a Pc recording its sound, they should be switched to "On"....
Dose it sound better then the 505? It sounds the same as that.

@@gearfacts see when you write things like that you are not being constructive. I think it's a great unit especially for what it costs.
@@socialdef3 My point was that the quality of the effects hasn't changed much in 20 years. Other features are great, sure, and I've said that many many times. The original poster was just saying that the quality of the fx hadn't changed much, and he's right.
I'm thinking of getting one of these, been playing guitar for 30 years and I've had everything from analog to digital, but now I need something cheap and very portable, I've had the Zoom MS-50g and I loved it, but it's one button form factor turned it into a one trick pony on live situations, but it had a lot more effects than this unit, would you guys recommend the Zoom G1X Four or the Mooer GE150, I've read the Zoom has terrible cab and amp simulators and distortions compared to the Mooer, but the Zoom has really great reverbs, delays and modulation effects, on the other side the Zoom runs on batteries and USB power (so it could run off a power bank in theory) while the Mooer has a lot more effects but doesn't run on batteries, has better cab and amp simulators and can combine more affects at a time.
Sounds to me like you're the perfect candidate to own a Zoom G1XFOUR :) Take a moment to try out a Nux multi effects pedal though. They have a slightly more analog feel if that's your preference :) #gearfacts
I am a beginner guitarist and bought the G1X Four to explore effects and thought it sounded like total arse - this was through an old Behringer bass/keyboard amp, so I figured, it was the amp (because the amp is full range, etc.). I did a factory reset and still sounded better, but was still a yuge disappointment. Since it's not a full IR device I didn't pay the cab configs much mind. A couple weeks ago I stumbled across it editing a patch on my PC... wait... the mike is off by default? Dafuq? I turned it on... oh my god it sounds SO much better! Still not great - I use it primarily as a headphone amp, but at least now it's _usable_ through the full-range amp.
Turning the cab mic on makes for a YUGE improvement. It sounded bad... I mean, really really bad and disappointing out of the box (it was factory sealed, zero signs of previous opening, and yet a factory reset cleared up some bad sound but it still sounded anemic... until turning the cab mike on).
I mostly practice near my modeling amp so I've been using that as a headphone amp at night with much better sounds, but still at least now that I know the mike is off in cabs any time I load up a new patch I know _why_ the Zoom sounds like ass when I use the G1x.
Yeah why did they distribute it with this crazy default setting? But yeah I agree it's still nothing special. Better for super-far-out tones rather than what the boffins refer to as "tone" :)
I'm still waiting for Zoom to drop the red Zoom B1/B1-X FOUR pedals.

The cabinets are only used for PC recording. They are not suitable for use in an amplifier. There are some that are, but some that are not because they squeeze and compact the sound and make it whiny, excessively bright and without body.
Yep I'd generally agree with that. Certainly I'd advise users to experiment though. Guitar playing has always evolved by stepping outside conventions :)

I just got ZoomG1X Four and This thing even on headphones can be too loud if you want (i though that after 50% volume it will start to sound crappy because of clipping, and 50% volume will be too quiet to play on headphones) and the bass there is great.
The guy on the video didn't used MIC simulation on CABs so it will all sound crap without a real AMP/CAB, you can see it clearly here 9:50 , all the magic is in this option to make it sound decent.
The sound quality on ZoomG1X Four isn't great, but it's a medium quality sound that is good for the price it cost, I though that it will have a crappy sound quality on high gains, but bought it anyway for Equalization, noise gate, delays etc but they are not GREAT, there are many crappy stuff that I dont want to use so just removed them from software by ZOOM LAB (for very long time wanted HELIX, but I won't spend that kind of money if I can't shred on guitar, so bought it as a cheap replacement for learning time), but was suprised that it can actually sound decent using high gain, I hope it will sound even better with AMP (just tested it on headphones directly from ZoomG1X four).
Also even if you chose an CAB you can change how it sound with one simple option there, which is awesome in my opinion.
Sadly ZOOM LAB don't allow you to download or try any users patches. I have BLACKSTAR amp and their program allows users to upload their presets and others to download it.
