Matt, you might not realize this but this movie was actually originally titled, “Clicking and Clacking and Beeping and Booping”. It also had the working titles of “Slowest Door in the West” and “Nice going, FORBIN!!”.
One of my favorite films. I evem have sound bytes from the film in my Windows computer.
Colossus sounds like Soundwave from Transformers. haha

Wonderful to see you guys tackle Colossus: The Forbin Project. Just like The Green Slime, it was a movie that was played on TNT and TBS a lot during the early 1990s though, unlike The Green Slime, I was probably too young to grasp it fully though, thankfully, Colossus has been appreciated in my later years and I'm pretty sad that the sequel books weren't adapted to film. Granted, the sequel books get crazy plot-wise but, still, A for ambition. ALSO, "Danger! High Voltage" reference? You guys are right up my own obscure tastes!
The sequel books were terrible. The movie is one of my favorites.
In High School, I was murderer #2 in Macbeth. The "vile blows and buffets of this world" guy.

I completely agree about what they did to Macbeth's lines, and it was precisely that reason that I loved it. I have always struggled with Shakespeare, that "what the hell are they trying to say" kind of hurdle, and turning it into conversational dialogue suddenly cleared so much of that up for me!
I saw this movie as a 13 year old kid on TV, and I liked it despite the TV movie quality and cliché premise (already in the 80's it was a ridiculously tiresome cliché that AI:s should conquer the world, and a precisious reader of Galaxy Science Fiction understood that it was a cliché already in the 50's). The Forbin Project was and is more intelligent than most sci-fi movies.
Just based on your discussion and the clips, the whole concept just grabbed me. I think I might actually track down a copy of the novel. Just the hook of "We turned on our supercomputer and found out there was another one... they're talking to each other," was instantly interesting.
I'm with Craig -- I have always loved this movie. As for Matt, I appreciated "He's Charles Forbin, for God's sake -- hubba hubba!" (The director is JOSEPH Sargent -- and yes, Pelham 123 is amazing.) Great Shakespeare from Craig! Thank you so much for this.
I remember those shiny edge blankets too! But the ones we had were light blue.
I'm still figuring out how I feel about Drive My Car, but I do know one thing: When the title popped up 40 minutes in, I laughed out loud. Having a cold open that is as long as most films entire first act is like something out of a parody of long, thoughtful cinema and I loved it!

I have been a Computer Engineer my entire career (over 40-years). Only a "Fool" would not leave a 'Back Door' ...
I think In the original novel forbin did program A backdoor into the system but unfortunately colossus gained too much too quickly and Once it hooked up and became one with guardian it became impossible to use any back door as 1 system Would always be watching the others back. I don't think they understood back The concept of an artificial intelligence changing its own Programming code but I'm pretty sure that's what the novel itself is implying.

This film is the epitome of a perfect candidate for remaking/rebooting. The entire time I seriously thought the twist would be that COLOSSUS & GUARDIAN would calculate every response from humanity and manipulate the planet into nuclear disarmament? “Conquering” the world makes the computers the common enemy the world needed to be manipulated into peace.

My heartfelt compliments on both the choice of movie and background LP 😎👍 On a semi-related note, the track “World Control” by ‘90s industrial band Manufacture samples lots of Colossus’ dialogue from the film, and is worth a listen 😉 On yet another related note, I always associate this film with a similarly slow sci-fi procedural from around the same time, The Andromeda Strain… Seen It? 😁

Oh no! You reacted to the pan and scan version! Only the blu-ray and laser disc versions have the wide screen presentation. In fact, until the blu-ray version came out only the laser disc had the original aspect ratio. I love this movie so much that I actually considered buying a laser disc player solely to watch this film it its original aspect.
Craig- your connection to and quote of the Shakespeare passage was the insight of someone who has done the passage creating a really valuable connection. What a great visualization of the core of the conflict in the film. Thanks for that.

might be gauche to suggest this, but I think this movie is a perfect candidate for a remake.
SEEN IT? "The Wind and the Lion" (1975) - Sean Connery as a Moroccan chieftain... with a heavy Scots accent. And Brian Keith spot on as Teddy Roosevelt, Candace Bergen looking lovely, and a bunch of fine character actors bringing up the rear. It's great fun, romantic rather than campy and has a great Jerry Goldsmith score to boot.
And speaking of "Pelham 123", how about another great thriller from 1974, "The Odessa File" (Jon Voight, Maximillian Schell)?

I remember watching it when it first came out and being blown away by it. A half century later, my reaction is different.
I remember watching this in like 2009 on CZcams. I've always remembered that ending, very different from other movies in the genre.

Seen it? Richard III with Ian McKellen, a bizarre and imaginative Shakespeare adaptation. It's very weird to watch this knowing that just a couple years later he would be Gandalf.

It takes on the attitude of a benevolent and yet sad God. It's seen all that we have done how we've all screwed up how we've ruined Nearly everything. And yet much like God, It still forgives us And offers us a chance at redemption that Or damnation. I don't Think that was the original filmmakers or novel writers Intentions but that's definitely how it comes off to me at the end of the movie mankind essentially created its own God and God gave him the ultimatum. Worship and obey and love me or face ultimate damnation and hellfire

I love the fact when I watch the Lego Star Wars stuff with my kids or play basically any Star Wars video game, that it’s Matt’s heavy breathing coming out of Vader.

Seen it? The Black Hole. One of the most fun and bonkers Sci-fi movies I’ve ever seen, and Ernest Borgnine wears a practical sweater the whole time. The finale of this movie is totally incredible, even if it requires you to ignore every known law of physics.
Can't say I'd call The Black Hole fun, but it is interesting, at least as an example of Disney experimenting with sci-fi

The real Tragedy of Macbeth is the movie not winning Best production design and Best cinematography. This year I'm more disappointed with the Oscars than ever.

Surprised no one recognized the woman Forbin beds is Webster's adopted mom.
Seen it: Oscar? Either the original with Louis De Funès or the American remake with Silvester Stallone? It's a fun bottle comedy of errors. But I can't imagine wierder pairing of actors playing the same role. De Funès being animated angry and sly to Stallone's slow, powerful and smug performance.
I just did my first Scene it request... for Oscar! I'm particularly interested in why critics disliked it so much: I thought it was really great!
@@inotterwords6115 didn't mean to step on your 'seen it' 😅 I have suggestions planned for couple of months now and this was the time for Oscar.
I think that critics didn't like it because of Stallone. I remember how he played the character, but can't say if he did a good job because I haven't seen the remake for a while. Nevertheless, I think critics seen him as a meathead because of the roles he was mostly typecasted at, which resulted in this reputation. It never happened to his biggest rival - Arnold Schwarzenegger, because Schwarzenegger showed how intelligent he was outside of his films. You can see that in Pumping Iron, how he philosophies the bodybuilding aspect of his life and how spiritual the pain becomes. Something Stallone's not capable of.
Always was curious about this movie, since it was one of the first ones to take the idea of the revolting supercomputer that enslaves humanity, only in this case its the computer thinking its doing humanity a service rather then defending itself or acting out of hate.

Tumbbad - seen it? A fascinating story about greed that is set during the end of the British occupation of India, it mixes history and myth through drama, horror, and suspense. It starts out confusing and ends up amazing. It’s both deeply entrenched in the culture that bore it yet is extremely universal due to its underlying themes. I caught myself thinking about it for days afterwards and would love to hear your take on it.
Also, The Night House- seen it? I still don’t know whether I liked this film or hated it, but it is one I would be curious to hear your thoughts on. It is beautifully shot with some astonishing practical effects and interesting ideas. Unfortunately, it’s also a bit of a mess and the characters are so one-dimensional and that I found myself extremely frustrated with it. The best description of the movie that I’ve come across is “almost great.” It’s only from 2021, yet I already hope it will be remade in the future with better storytelling, character development, and a clearer idea of what it wants to be.
Have you guys seen The Green Knight? it was a very different kind of modern movie visually stunning but bizarre.
I like the show and I’ve always appreciate you guys. I’m coming back to the show after I hiatus. With all due respect it’s been a long time and I’m very surprised you guys aren’t using lavalier mics yet.
Honestly, I'm not so sure that an A.I. taking over the would would necessarily be such a terrible thing if it meant an end to war and other societal ills like famine, pollution, etc.

The first 90 seconds was so disappointing- you watched a movie you'd been wanting to watch for a long time but you didn't watch it with us!?
And then you talk about a LEGO production of the movie and you will voice the JEJ part and I'm thinking "Oh boy! He's going to do a line from the movie in his James Real Jones impression!" And we're left with nothing.

Seen It? -> Jagged Edge with Glenn Close, Jeff Bridges and a loveably potty-mouthed Robert Loggia. A suspenseful thriller with red herrings thrown at you until the revelation is exposed. One of my favorites of all time.

Like someone else said, this movie was on ALL THE TIME, and I watched it ALL THE TIME, and I hated it EVERY DANG TIME. I do like Craig's baffled look upon the reveal.

It a chunky ass 1960s computer. It's going to stop working if someone breathes on it. It's also connected to other sites through the wondrous technology of "probably manually switched telephones."
And if you just say no, what's it going to do? Launch all the missiles? If missile 1 is met with no, then by induction (it's already "solved" math), all subsequent missiles will also be met with no, therefore it's not a valid strategy.
I think I missed something... what happened to the AI colossus was first talking to?

presumably it''s dictating the same orders to its own people in tandum with Colossus - or was voluntarily absorbed into the faster, American version. just guessing
boy, I couldn't disagree with you guys more. I guess it helps if you are familiar with the technical ins and outs of AI, but the exposition is by FAR the strongest done in any movie (with the exception of maybe Ex Machina). In fact it's my favorite part of the movie.
And life follows fiction - AI bots developing their own language to communicate is something that is happening right now, and of course there are the LLMs and transformer units that are actually going down the path right now to learn science and mathematics from first principles. So I get chills when I hear that exposition, which again tracks what we are seeing right now. Up to - and including - the fact that the system is 'better than what they thought'. Systems right now are turning out to be better than what the researchers thought, with small language models being put on smartphones literally showing themselves to be competent in subjects as human experts.
As for Braeden's performance well I think you guys wanted a different movie. In general, scientists that head large projects aren't engaging, outgoing and social, they are very reserved and choose their words carefully - just like Braeden. And so that just adds realism to the movie for me. Any terminator film or terminator knockoff should do for your guys, in general they are dumb - but slickly done - fun that is really entertaining on a more visceral level.
Anyways I get it. I'm glad you liked the movie but in general I think you pay way too much attention to the slick superficial level of film for my taste.

Seen it? -> Hellzapoppin! Starring Olsen and Johnson and Martha Raye. This is the most amazing movie I have ever seen and I cannot believe there haven’t been any movies like it since it’s release. If you like slapstick comedy and musicals, don’t miss it!
