What's that rustling you hear behind you? Don't look now, but there is a Mummy coming to steal your scroll! Boris Karloff visits us in the basement as we kick off a very spooky October.
In Seen It, we discuss non-traditional horror: singing cannibals, heads like erasers and the end of the world.

If Matt and Craig want a good Halloween-adjacent movie with a heroic black cat, I suggest Kiki’s Delivery Service by those talented folks at Studio Ghibli. Jiji is loyal, cute as a button, and very snarky. (I have a plush of him sitting next to me we speak.)

The Lord of the Rings movies, particularly the first, can be seen as a horror movie if you ask me. Like most horror movies it opens (after the voice over history lesson) with nice normal people comfortable in their quaint lives before they have a run in with evil and they're catapulted into a world of terror. You could pick just about any orc (any orc used for a close up I mean) and make that the sole monster in a horror movie and it would work, everything surrounding them is like what you would see in a horror movie, right down to their clothes. Golum as a character seems like he was pulled out of a horror movie, his mind and body have literally been twisted by this malignant force to grotesque results, he's sympathetic and revolting all at once and that's exactly what you would want in a character like his in a good horror movie. Then you have how it's shot, it's hard to describe but if you watch them again with that in mind I think you'll notice it, the angles Peter Jackson uses, the sound design, it's all very creepy and gets under your skin like in a horror movie. There are a half a dozen other things I didn't talk about just to keep this a readable length, the army of the dead, the mines of Moria, etc, but trust me, the next time you watch those movies pay attention and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Nothing to do with Halloween, but if you have not already seen it, I suggest 1983’s Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. With an East v. West culture clash so pronounced that its performances deliberately reflect it, what reads on paper like a queer variation on The Bridge on the River Kwai becomes much more; as we gain insight into these characters, MCML congeals into a study of nothing less than masculinity itself. I probably like it more than most, but it is recommendable on some significant factors alone, among them: one of Bowie’s best performances; the start of YMO star Sakamoto’s second career as a film composer; and the first dramatic role by Japanese comedian “Beat” Takeshi Kitano, who would go on to -become the greatest yakuza director not named Kinji Fukasaku- ruin Zatoichi for Matt Sloan. That last bit may undermine the film, though, as Sloan might find sadistic satisfaction in the film’s most heart-wrenching scene.
P.S. Sorry, Craig, but I can’t satiate that side of you yet; I’ve been shopping around that screenplay where Ethan Hawke and Shia LaBeouf get treated like Lars von Trier heroines, but no one’s returned my calls.
