To compress the pistons I use the old brake pads to evenly apply pressure to push them in. I’ve never needed to use a tool to compress these pistons. For track days I have been able to swap out all pads on all four wheels in less than 45 minutes. This is a very easy job. Thx for the video.
Fantastic video giving clear step by step information on how to replace disc and pads out of a F30. My F31 (33000 miles ) is up for a front brake pad change and BMW have quoted £835 to replace all 4 corners. Costed out at £312 for parts so i am just going to do it myself.
Great brake job! TRW pads are showing alot of curiosity from Akebono fans. ZF now owns TRW for those who didn't know which gives confidence. Polishing those pins is very important indeed. You can lose wheel horsepower from delayed pad retraction. Another hidden often forgotten wheel horsepower thief is the caliper pistons. The seal builds crud around the pistons. Removing and polishing the pistons then putting a light coat of molykote silicone grease can give you a performance edge.
Thanks FCP, this was a great video with really clear well thought out instructions. Never changed brakes and rotors before and following this video was super easy to do. Also saved around $1k of garage labor!!!
The Zimmerman after market one piece discs are notorious for warping. There’s a reason why the original Brembo discs are in two parts. If pins are pitted/corroded, replace them along with the clip. It’s recommended by Brembo to open the bleed nipples when retracting the pistons. The BMW ABS pump doesn’t like fluid forced back through the unit and is understood to cause premature failure of the pump. Just unnecessary to do so.due to size of brakes they are noisy. There’s a lubricant provided by Brembo to help reduce this that also helps prevent galvanic corrosion, use it.
Great video. By coincidence I have fitted the Zinnerman Disc with the Z Coat. Yes the callipers are very light but the discs are really heavy (370mm). With regards to the brake fluid I use a small syringe / pipet to suck the displaced brake fluid out as the eight pistons will displace a fair amount of fluid which will spill from the reservoir.
Excellent well filmed informative video. Great camera angles. I have these brakes on my car and this was a great help in helping me diagnose a vibration problem ❤❤ thanks very much.
Brake pins remind me of my 2002tii, pins are so much easier! Granted the brakes from my 2002tii that was totaled went into my 1967 2000ti along with the subframe and the TII motor. Four piston calipers are always the best!
Recommend changing rotors with every brake pad change on a BMW F3X with M-Sport Brakes? My BMW E9X M3 recommends new rotors with every brake pad change, which gets expensive.
I have the exact same old rotors and just ordered the same Zimmermann Coated Z with zimmermann pads 👍🏽 I’m thinking to paint them black before installing;)
Thanks again for doing these! Looking forward to the "non M-Sport" brake job videos. Thanks guys! (Did we decide to reinstall the old brakes before putting the wheel back on at the end..? Ha!) 😆😉
I LOVE THIS DIY's! Keep them coming! I think it will be nice to have some B48 and B58 engine DIYs too. Like engine valve cover gasket and the oil housing gasket, they look a little tricky for B48 and B58 engines. There isn't available right now.
Have you had any complaints about noise with this setup? I have the same rotors, but with akebono pads, and the noise is annoyingly loud, but only when driving. I think the pads are slightly hitting the slots in the rotor and makes the noise. On the highway next to barriers its very audible. When braking, it is smooth. I just can't get it to go away, bleed, push the pads back, etc. I'm very confused. Any advice?
got the same problem after I switched to brembo dimpled discs & silver ceramic pads. The noise comes from the front wheels only though... Have you managed to figure this out?
Is there anything that can be done to eliminate or minimize the ticking sound the M Performance brakes make at any speed? Really annoying after a while. Will just drilled, but not slotted rotors help with that?
@@cw9023 Unfortunately no. I'm about to swap out the brake pads and see if perhaps that might make a difference. When it's time for rotors I'm just going with some F80 rotors.
Quick question. I need to replace all 4 of my rotors. My pads were recently changed and they are new. My question is, can I remove the rotors without having to disassemble the pads as well by just removing the caliper bolts and removing as one unit?
Zimmerman is still a high quality brand. They explain in the video that this is a lower-cost alternative (being half as expensive) for the floating rotors from the same brand. The weight savings are there but are they worth spending twice as much on rotors? That's up to the owner.
Zimmerman is the highest quality. They are precision balanced, zero varience, and tempered to prevent warping. If you drive in the tripple digits your steering wheel will have zero vibration from the brakes.
so my 2017 330i wagon has the blue m sport calipers but what seems like regular rotors.. can i just update the rotors alone to a drilled and slotted set and be fine?
I have the same problem now I have a clunky noise when I brake for the first time going forward or in reverse. Sounds like the pads move slightly 🤷🏻♂️ I have bremo pads now pins and clips and still no difference
when changing the brake pad wear sensor do i have to disconnect the battery first be for pulling the changing the sensor? Also if i disconnect the battery will i have to have the car reprogramed to the battery again,? I worry disconnecting electrical parts of the car with battery connected as I think it might trigger the car into thinking some thing has failed.
We have Lisle 29100 available which should do the trick! You can use the tool along with the old pads to act as "backing plates" while you compress the pistons back.
I need to do me brakes in the next few weeks, how do you determine if you need to replace the rotors at the same time? I have a '17 340 xdrive with about 36k miles on it.
Brake rotors should last longer than pads - especially if this is the first brake job since the car left the factory and it has OE parts. I am about to do the pads on my 2016 340i - it has 52K miles and I will not be replacing the rotors unless I see any obvious damage. As a check, measure the thickness of the rotor, most manufacturers have a recommended minimum thickness they can reach before needing replacement.
Hi SS, bed in the procedure is going to be pretty standard for these pads. Often times manufacturers will include specifics, depending on the type of pad you are installing.
Informative video but didn’t clean brake dust off the inside of the callipers and no copper ease on the back of the new pads either 😬 they gonna be squealing in a couple of weeks 😂
I just had done my front brakes today, and tried moving them as shown at 13:34 but they didn’t move like that at all. Had trouble with corrosion on the pins and tried cleaning them up as much as possible as well. After the job I noticed it sounded like the pads were scraping on the new rotor face, but went away after 10 miles of driving. Did I do everything correct? @fcpeuro

BMW charges a ridiculous amount for brakes service. Definitely worth learning to do it yourself.

I'm the UK. TRW are OEM for almost everything lately.
This channel and retailer are a great help to the BMW community, thanks guys!

Great job as always Garrett! I'm putting these calipers on my e32 and wanted a better understanding of how they went together etc and this did it 👍
Top job thanks for sharing 👍🏻 Gotta do on mine this week
Another one from FCP euro 😂👍🏻
This video is simply awesome. Thank you for sharing your insights. 🙂

Great!! Thank you guys!! Please help us to know how to flush the cooling system in the B58 and B48... it's so confused that double expansion tank!!!
Alrighty I got some new pads, rotors, jacks and tools. Now I just need a BMW F30 with an M Sport package :)
You've got just the right attitude man
🤣🤣
Cracking video and great setup though these are fixed caliper and don't forget to pump the brake before the road test 💥🚗
Even easier than my old ISF which was also very easy lol

They truly are!
You should clean the pistons before pushing them back to caliper, otherwise you might damage the seals
These are just like my 2013 Tundra brakes. Good video

same problem here

Perhaps the reason they replaced those 18mm bolts is to prevent people who don’t use torque wrenches from over torquing the bolts
You didnt put any kind of copper slip behind the pads or on the pins? I find my m sport brakes squeal a lot if i dont apply grease.
Always a good idea to use a bit on the pins and back of pads!
great video like always! is there a need to bleed the brake fluid when doing these pads?
thanks a lot. so wonderfully explained and shown. Could you, please, do the same for bmw3 g20? We would appriciate it very much. God bless!
Please do a brake change for a G30 5 series! Cheers!
Working on it!

How come at 1:15 you said floating style calipers? Arent these fixed piston calipers?
Quick question, why Brembo discs and TRW pads as opposed to Brembo all round? Thanks
Very unusual for a bolt that needs repalcing (stretch bolt) to just have a torque setting, not torque plus degrees.
What if you end up using the old bolts to put it back together but I cleaned them will that be a problem??
Are these callipers the same as the m sport blue callipers or are the blue ones different (apart from colour)
How do you troubleshoot, knocking after changing rotors and pads?
Can we get an F85/F86 Brake job instruction? I saw the F15/F16 video.
Not a fan of these solid aftermarket rotors. When I see guys installing cheaper aftermarket parts I wonder what else has been done on the cheap.

Do you put anti seize or anything on the hub after cleaning and before putting the rotor on?
Would this kit work on a 1.5 litre 318 2016 (f 30) model? If yes, would it be an upgrade? Or other hardware/software need change as well.
Thanks
When standing still if I hit the brakes I hear a metallic sqwanching sound. Any idea why???
You may have a pad installed backwards. i.e. inside out.
Is it necessary to replace the caliper bolts? Also is it necessary to replace the brake pad spring clip? How do you tell if either need replacing?
Hi MotoBoy, both are reusable and typically last a long time. You may want to replace them if they have been damaged, or for aesthetics .
What kind of digital torque wrench is it? I would like to know if you guy sell it
Hi Kenny, we do not sell that, but Gareth is using a Matco digital torque wrench!
Can you recommended Ceramic Brake pads for my g20 I have the mperformance BBK 4 piston kit installed in it.
Do you have the picture of the comparison between the old and the new pads?
Sorry, we were not really snapping any photos during this DIY!
Doze the break bad changes in size or we can use the usually break pad that com from factory ?
Is the M Sport brakes the same as the brembos, are those the same thing vs the stock or are there three versions of brakes for the F-30?
I’ve just fitted mine and I can hear the pads clunk during breaking to a stop. This happens a few times during a drive. Is this normal?
Was it a constant knock or a single knock/clunk when braking to a stop? And did you end up finding out what was causing it?
