  • From Milan to Seattle, our full interview with then-Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is now available. During a long-form interview, Schultz reflects on a series of life-changing events, including haunting memories of his war-stricken father, appreciation for Bill Gates Sr.’s intimidation tactic and regret during his time as the Seattle SuperSonics owner. Truly good interview of a remarkable man. But I wish he had been more kind to the father of the girl whom he took out on a date when he was young and was living in a Brooklyn project. Most fathers in the same situation would have felt the same - the difference was that that particular father was very honest about how he felt. It was prejudice but we - particularly the fathers among us - are only human.

Saying as a people leader you don’t expect anything that you don’t expect from yourself doesn’t really work. Most CEOs are never home, they don’t know their kids and they are in love with the power and money. And that is the choice they have made. Even high performers who work 70 hours a week, usually desire a bit more balance in life. Also, many CEOs I have been around are nasty people, they are insecure and can’t be trusted. I have seen CEO’s that I have worked for be praised for being wonderful people, and those who are around them know differently. Howard may be amazing but I doubt it.
