- Building A Budget Kurt Cobain Mustang | Part 1
Part 1 of Building a Budget Kurt Cobain Mustang I show the ideas behind the build, I'm hope to replicate the Iconic Fiesta Red Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang which was used on the Nirvana In Utero tour on a budget using a Squier Bullet Mustang HH Neck and a Squier Bullet Vintage Modified Mustang Fiesta Red Body.

#Mustang #Cobain #Nirvana - Hudba
(Fingers crossed...) And if it doesn't work out, well, you can just smash it up on the floor like Cobain did and proudly display it on the wall, lol!
haha good god no I'll make it work :)
@@theguitarmanifesto Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, bro! Anticipating the whole process, from start to finish. Best of luck 😎
I'm pretty handy with modding guitars not done it for a while but it'll come good in the end, eventually 😂😂
I'm right handed 😂
cant wait to see this whole series. my dream is to buy these squier mustangs by the sack and fill em with different pickups, switches, tuners, etc.
That sounds like an awesome plan dude, looking forward to building it
I kinda like my bullet mustang's neck better than my competition mustang... the new competition mustangs have a Clapton v , or mine is just rare i guess
That’s gonna be a sweet guitar😎
Most definitely looking forward to this one :)
WOW this is gonna be a cool project 😎 saw the vid come up on facebook and tapped on it straight away haha this is gonna be class 😎😎😎😎🎸👌
😂😂 that's awesome bro 😎👌 it's gonna be a fun build for sure
This is great always was hoping someone would do thie
Fuck yes I'm on it bro ;)
i like this idea, love the channel dude
Yeah I'm looking forward to it, glad you like the channel dude
YES DUDE! this is awesome!
Yeah dude I'm all over this one 👌🎸
I want to start a guitar building replicas for myself, for fun... But I never really even touched the "insides" of guitars, will changing pickups, or all those wires be so hard? Or couple of tutorials will help? I want to build a Vandalism and Mustang
I show how to solder later in the series, I also built a vandalism Strat check them videos out
Need a soldering iron, and some patience
If the brand new Fender classic gear tuners we’re available, I’d get those! I’d love to put em on my p90 Mustang. I recently acquired the new American performer Mustang in penny. A bit pricey but I just couldn’t resist. I’m so glad I got, it turned out to be an absolutely magic Mustang. Nicest Mustang I’ve tried so far! The bridge works just a smoothly as the original but without any of the old problems. The pickups sound like a classic mustang, only higher output. The neck a silky smooth satin finish with a really nice fret job. And the tuners look classic but have a modern ratio. So those new tuners is what I’d love to get another set of. Hopefully Fender start selling them separately. I wish they also sold Mustang necks and Mustang parts in general. And the classic white F tuners, I wonder why Fender no longer use them. Only Fender Japan. But an exciting project you’ve started!
I've done the exact same project with a sonic blue vm mustang. I've got a white JB in the bridge & a white SD lil59 in the neck. I've got both switches wired for full humbucker, off, & coil split for both pickups. Don't forget to shim the neck for the T.O.M. bridge. I used a 1° shim from Stew Mac. I was also able to use a Cobain Mustang pickguard I ordered from WD pickguards & it fit pretty good considering it wasn't supposed to, lol. A little trimming by the neck pocket saved me from routing the ugly original 1. Don't forget to ground the bridge or tail piece. I'm sure you've already found that hidden wire in the bridge thimble hole. I didn't find that until I drilled the hole out & wrapped the wire around the drill bit, lol. Anyways, good luck man. Love the videos. 👍🎸
this is a pretty cool project, I have done a few myself, along with a good friend of mine. I currently have 2 of the VM Mustangs Blue and Red. Blue has Skystang humbucker bridge setup, and Red has the Roseland Ballroom setup, with hotrails in the bridge with red pearl pickguard. But in the neck positions I put Lipstick tubes because i love their bluesy sound and tone.
oh wow they sound like great guitars and I bet they were fun to build?
Please stay tuned to see how I progress, obviously with this build I'm trying to stay true to the original signature Cobain Fender Mustang so please let me know if you have any pointers :)
@@theguitarmanifesto Thanks! yes they were alot of fun. definitely a labor of love with them. though the soldering and setup belong with my friend Bob(who doubles as my tech from time to time) to stay true to the original guitars that Kurt played, would depend on the time period, and make of the guitars in general. for instance, the Red Mustang he got from Fender first in mid 1993 with a Red pickguard, that had Fender stock mustang pickups, and he simply had his tech Earnie put a White JB Jr in the bridge, and changed the stock bridge to a tuneomatic. but for the InUtero tour, it was changed to a white pearliod pickguard, with a black stock in the neck, and black SD JB in the bridge, to match the sound and style of the 3 blue Mustangs he had purchased around the late summer/early fall pre tour...
Yeah I get that I mean I'm trying to stay true to the actual Fender signature model, but I don't mind compromising with the original In Utero version or even going for a general Cobain vibe.
Ah yeah the wiring :) the part I'm not looking forward to, it's been a while since I've done such a task.
It's good you had your friend on hand to sort it out, I expect this to be a long winded project for sure
but again I need to keep it budget at the same time
@GANTOBARN I really dig the Roseland fiesta red look. Do you have any videos of yourself playing these 'stangs?
I also have a Squier Bullet Mustang and i'm trying to modify it like Kurt's Mustang. I founded a cheap Humbucker pickup branded "Donlis" on Aliexpress, it has almost the same specs than the Seymour Duncan JB and i installed it in my Bullet Mustang. Then i replaced the neck pickup with other single coil Donlis from a SSS set and i installed into the neck position. Now i'm waiting the switches and i can have some sort of type Cobain Mustang because i already have my white pearl pickguard with the SH combination.
A good little project, being it's not going to be exact to spec I'd probably give it a few personal touches but that's just me, things like a stacked single sized bridge pickup and a tele neck pickup just for something different, everybody is different so have at it and enjoy.
I like the idea Pete I may do something similar later down the line, it will really need a SD JB in there though for all the Nirvana fans
Awesome! Thanks for the video. I'm about to be doing this to a Vintage Modified Mustang I just picked up for stupid cheap.
There's 6 parts to this series be sure to check them all out, ah nice should make for a great project
@@theguitarmanifesto watched them all and I'll probably watch them a few more times. My Vintage Modified comes complete so I may re-use the single-coil, pots and switches. I want it to be a decent player and a wall piece. Funny enough I have a complete HH mustang also so I may swap necks like you did. Do you have specs on Kurt's neck? Radius? Fret wire size? Neck finish?
Very cool!! Reds generally not my colour but I can see this looking killer!!
Yeah bro it will be badass 🎸👌
That squire has some nice figuring in the back unless my eyes are deceiving me!
Looking forward to this project. Haven't got into DIYing guitars yet, so your tutorial might spark my interest and give me the courage to dismantle and assemble my guitars.
Hopefully it will give you some ideas etc glad you are looking forward to it 🎸😎
@@theguitarmanifesto Thanks, man.
Start with the cheapest guitar you can find used, if you mess it up u won't be bothered, but if you like what you've done then try on a guitar that you actually want
That's solid advice there
Another awseome video! Can;t wait for part 2 . I think Kurt favoured using a "tune o matic" gibson bridge. I have a jagstang with the texas special and sh4 Pups its amazing!.
Gonna be a good series hopefully will help a few people out and make a sweet guitar at the same time, great pickups for sure
@@theguitarmanifesto You've inspired me to look on ebay for spare parts lol . fancy making my own :D
Just don't buy the stuff I need for the build just yet we may have a bidding war 😂😂
Great nodding platform.the one thing I dont like is the stock bridge. It's hard to intonate.im gonna put a tele half- bridge on mine.great video and that fiesta red is cool.fender has very cool colors.old school
sounds like an interesting plan, stop the bridge floating and use brand new strings makes setting intonation much easier.
You should do a budget Jaguar by Kurt Cobain cause we all know that guitar is a bit expensive.
I've mentioned many times before I will be doing one later down the line bro for sure 🎸👌
@@theguitarmanifesto o sorry I'm new hear to your channel
Ah ok sorry bro didn't realise, welcome to the channel, I'm aim to do the build in the next few months
and inaccurate
Looking forward to seeing the end result
Wish I had the technical know-how to do all of it 😂😂😂😂
Wish I did too 😂😂
Gonna be a fun series 👌🎸
I would personally get a maple fret board, and a loaded single coil pickguard with the controls in tack. Rest of it I really like!!!
Not the Cobain way :)
Great video
I was so confused when I saw the bullet mustang at first, I had to make sure I clicked on the right video 😂😂
All about the storyline 😂😂 keep watching the series
@@theguitarmanifesto I watched the series from beginning to end 😉 and you have inspired me to do this to my VM mustang
@@liambeyer5988 ah that's awesome bro, keep me updated how your one turns out 🎸👌
@@theguitarmanifesto will do considering I am on this channel every day
@@liambeyer5988 Did you do it? How'd it turn out?
3 humbuckers would be cool
Oh and the tuners I use is fender/gotoh sd91 vintage tuners they are really nice but bit expensive
Nice tuners but obviously I need budget
Hey Rob! Do a tribute to Dookie!! It turned 25 today, I’m gonna record a video in a bit about it. Best album ever made!!
I bought Dookie the first week it came out I was 14 years old. I was heavily into Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins at the time, We didn't realise at the time how lucky we were to have such good music, it amazing me 25 years on kids are still digging the same music we did a generation ago. 👌🎸😎🇬🇧
Can you do a video how to install the tune o matic? I literally just ordered one for my mustang but there is no videos how to install it on a mustang
It'll be in the series dude, easy to do with the right tools
Do you reckon that the tuners on the bullet Mustang neck would be good with a trem (I am seriously considering putting the neck of the bullet on my vintage modified)
They're ok, more importantly lock the floating bridge
How would you go about buying a neck? I've looked everywhere and can't really find anything. I could buy a fender neck but those are expensive. So is going Warmoth. Any ideas?
They show up on eBay all the time, or maybe buy a used Mustang and strip it for parts sell the bits you don't need.
I dig this idea. I know it’s not a traditional but would a push pull coil split be reasonable on the bridge? 🤔
Ooh yeah it's an idea I could definitely entertain if it adds a little more wiring 😂😂
I just really like coil split. But I think this is a dope idea. Didn’t it have a competition stripe on it too?
Yeah I'm digging that Idea too, it's something I'd use a lot for sure
No not the Fiesta red one, the real one is in this video
czcams.com/video/nsWbX4RwPAw/video.html
This might be a dumb question but would it be possible to convert a hard tail mustang into one that can have the dynamic vibrato dropped in.
Yes you can had been done quite a few times, your measurements need to be bang on
Have you considered using a Seymour Duncan hot rail pickup or a jb Junior for the bridge pickup?
No like I said I'll be keeping quite true to the original KC Mustang 👌
@@theguitarmanifesto Kurts LPB Competition Mustang had a hot rail in the bridge
The Fiesta Red KC Mustang as per the video 😂😂
Rob, what's your favorite guitar under $400 new? Thanks!!!!
Definitely the Squier Deluxe Jazzmaster 🎸👌
I'm selling my Moxf6 workstation keyboard....A guy locally is offering a trade for his 78 fender music master. Black. Its vintage single coiled one pup ....only 3/4 scale though. What you think of them? USA I believe. Has that old played in look too! With a gig bag
Sounds like an awesome deal to me, wise investment too will only go up in value 🤘👌🎸
just curious, why did you use the bullet neck over the vintage modified neck?
I prefer the natural finish neck compared to gloss, the radius of the bullet neck is more suited to a tuneomatic bridge for better string action.
dude it's going to be the best fiesta red
Fuck yeah 🎸👌
@@theguitarmanifesto the fiesta red one is the one that I like the best. I bought one when they first came out. I still have it in a black fender case. I plan on getting a sonic blue one just haven't had the extra cash to purchase yet. Looking forward to see this guitar at the end of building it.
Yeah I've had a few of them over the years really are top drawer guitars, very fitting tribute to the Cobain guitar. That's great you have kept yours and will be getting the sonic blue one. Part 3 will next week 🎸👌
Good idea, maybe some vintage keys
I'll need to check the size of the holes as to what I can get, will be vintage or modern tuners
Holy shit. I was gonna do this lol
You can do it with me 👌🎸
@@theguitarmanifesto I didn't buy any of the materials yet. Haha
we're cool then bro 😂😂 when you're ready
@@theguitarmanifesto thanks. I can't wait for part two man. Keep up the good work
It's in the making bro. 👌🎸
Locking tuners? I recommend axetexch for parts online
I'll definitely check the website out :)
What's the name of the tune o matic bridge?
That one was from a Fender guitar
@@theguitarmanifesto ok thanks I will try to find one
@@mark880 there is plenty of generic Chinese ones on eBay
@@theguitarmanifesto okay I thanks want to mod a squier bullet
@@mark880 ok keep watching the series some good tips in there that might help you out
so do i have to buy a new body
No not at all
@@theguitarmanifesto Well im going for skystang 1 look so dont i need a new body since i need to fit in one pickup only. since a squier mustang has double pickups
KC Backplate?
if you can find me one cheap :)
I want to do this on a bullet Mustang, I don't want an exact replica but more of a Cobain style guitar. But I don't know if I'll be able to have the switches on the side. I'm not confident enough to make holes in the wood. Do you think Kurt would own a Surf Green Mustang? I don't feel like painting it either. Again, Cobain style not replica. ^^
Maybe just for a Seymour Duncan JB SH-4 on the bridge keep the rest stock for now
@@theguitarmanifesto Should I keep the stock humbucker on the neck? Or maybe go for a single coil?
All depends on the sound you're after and how confident you are modding guitars
@@theguitarmanifesto I'm going to look further on what I need and what I want. I never modded any guitar, gotta start somewhere right? 😊
Totally yes, you will need to think about pickguards to fit your Mustang too if you're putting in a single coil on the neck position
Where are you from, you sound proper Yorkshire
Milton Keynes 😂😂
I built one for less than $300. If you don't believe me....go to my Facebook profile. If I could, I'd post the pic on here.
Don't worry I believe you 😂😂
Since it is a budget build, probably you can use parts from Chinese guitar knock off sellers if they're cheap but of decent quality. Just my two cents.
I will where possible but a lot of the parts will need to be the real deal for it to sound pretty decent. The more expensive stuff I will get used so will be cheaper anyways
@@theguitarmanifesto You can save a lot for the cosmetics part by buying Chinese knockoffs like the pick guard. But yeah, sticking to the original stuff would probably pay off better especially in the sound quality and durability.
yeah the pickguard and vibrato as I linked in the video will be cheap chinese knockoffs for sure
25,5 scale for Cobains guitar ? nuts ?Cobain always used short scale when playing mustang
if you listen I said it's got a bullet Mustang HH neck on it which is 24" scale 💪 so to answer your question no I'm not nuts
