Part 6 Building A Budget Kurt Cobain Mustang
czcams.com/video/NNfvlj-Zc7o/video.html
I've always wanted a mustang configured like this. I'm horrible at electronics though.
just take your time it's pretty simple
@@theguitarmanifesto just take your take
@@fuchsia5899 *time
All part of the learning proccess with wiring, apart from that it looks and sounds definitely like a Kurt Cobain mustang!
I think I've found the problem the humbucker switch is wired differently to a stock single pickup
Been loving this series man, learning alot too! Awesome build
Thanks bro hopefully the next one I'll sort the switching out
Great work Rob. It sounds excellent 👍
It's getting there needs some more tweaking
Rob I really dig this guitar it sounds great to!! Rock on☮️🤘🎸
Thanks bro it does sound awesome
Sounds spot on to me, looks cool too, glad you shown the wiring issue, most people would of edited that out n shown the finished product, I'm soo doing this to my Mustang!
It does sound great, yeah I'd thought I document all the issues that can arise.
I think I know whats happened hopefully I'll fix it today.
Ah that's awesome go for it
Nice series Rob, sorry about the hangups, but it would be cool if you could do more of these types of videos. The mustang is sounding good.
Thanks bro yeah it's a bummer stripped it all apart today still no joy 😪 will be more to come including the Telemaster I made a video of last week
Amazing mate!
Thanks bro it's getting there
Looking and sounding very cool. I want a Mustang ! Cheers.
Thanks bro, you definitely need a Mustang
WOW bro I am really impressed by this, love everything about this guitar, colour, the sound, design it’s clasz and badass 😎😎😎 nice to listen to some Cobain music again too noone like him
It's turned out pretty darn good just wish I could sort the switching issue out.
Yeah dude more Nirvana to come
Wooow rob what a work amazing guitar and sounds like the fender signature model of kurt i say for me its best do this than buy the mustang from fender
It's getting there just need to fix the switching issues, sounding pretty good so far
Glad to see you use a decent soldering iron, that and good solder is more than half the battle, some people like to do things the hard way but not me.
Yeah they're not much more expensive than the cheap standalone ones.
I don't like to fuck around with crap gear
Daamn man, what a great result! Looks and sounds amazing! I’m sorry about the bridge but awesome if everything is still fine like this! Gotta say that fiesta red is one of the nicest reds that Fender do, and looks stunning on a Mustang! I’m also noticing that your playing has improved, more solid, you seem more confident playing. Sounded awesome to me! I’m almost tempted to try to build my own budget Cobain Mustang now, the last time I think I saw one was about 14-15 years ago I think 🤔 or it might’ve been a Jagstang not sure
Thanks bro it's getting there I think I know whats up with the switching I'll try and fix it today.
Yeah I love Fiesta red looks awesome on a Mustang.
Yeah go for it either a Jag or Mustang would be cool.
Not sure if you've seen it but I made a video of a Telemaster I'm modding next it has the look of a Jag-Stang
As a new guitar player I love the channel. Still searching for “my” guitar, hopefully it happens soon. The new player Strat is nice but I think I like the ceramics in my old standard better. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks dude keeping trying new guitars out stick to what you like
Very informative mate. I’ll defo be tackling this project soon. Much to my wife’s dismay 🤪 another guitar in the house lol
Glad it helps bro, yeah go for it I'm sure she'll understand
Compared the clip of the bridge pickup to the Lice on Nulle Ailleurs video and it sounds almost just like it! Nice job man
ive had cavity touchy problems too with my mustang... i widened it around the switches
Sweet
The great finale, at last. Thanks for those close ups. Those moments when you were silently doing the soldering work, that was intense, heavy breathing and all. I wonder if the heat from the soldering iron would affect the switches or the pots. But since you could play the guitar, probably it didn't. Yeah, your playing sounds just like the real deal, how Cobain hits those weird sounding chords. Grounding the wires, which I was waiting for, clearly explained and shown, thanks. Hoping you can sort out why those switches weren't cooperating with you. Great build, inspiring me to try out myself. Thanks, Rob, you're the man!
haha the heavy breathing is down to my allergies my nose is fucked :)
No it's not the heat, I have rewired it this morning 2 different ways still the same problem I'm thinking the humbucker is at fault.
Glad this series has helped you out, be cool if you could make your own one too.
Cobain was a genius for sure.
@@theguitarmanifesto Thanks again, Rob. Patiently waiting for the actual demo when you get it working fine. Speaking about Cobain riffs, I know I got the power chords right, but when I hear you play it, those correct weird notes come out. Clearly you know which strings to hit. Maybe you could even show how to correctly play them when you jam during your upcoming videos. Appreciating your great work, you are such a down to earth guy. Your channel deserves to have more subs.
Hopefully I'll locate the issue 😪
In terms of Cobains style I can't really explain it too well the best thing is to listen carefully to his live stuff and watch how he plays, I've been doing this for 27 years so kinda comes naturally now.
Never watch these guitar lesson videos or tabs they are mostly wrong.
as i expected, the best fiesta red
Damn straight bro
Looks good, strings need to come through the other side of the bridge and back under the cigar though!
Bridge pick up just sounds so much better when playing guitar driven music from Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins etc., This is just my opinion. Nice build mate!
Thanks bro yeah agree, check out the last in the series Montage Of Nevermind
Hey Rob, I took a screen shot of your video at 12:36, & to me it looks like the wires that go corner to corner in "an X shape" on the switches appear to not be wired right. Excuse me if I'm mistaken. But if you ignore the center lugs where the pickups are wired on, the corner lugs should be wired to the lug that is diagonally from it. The black wire on the neck switch is wired properly, but I think the white wire is not. It looks like the white wire goes to the same lug as the black wire does. And it should go to the lug that is diagonal from itself. And it looks like the bridge switch is wired the same way. Again, forgive me if I am wrong. I'm not trying to tell you how to wire your guitar. Just thought I might be able to help. Congrats on finishing it. It looks awesome man.
I'll double check it all today, thing it needs to be wired like a Jag-stang
Sounds great
Thanks dude, check out the Montage Of Nevermind video I made after this
Totally sounds right. It’s amazing how having another guitar with the same setting on whatever amp will be close, super close, but as soon as a Mustang, jagstang or signature Jaguar gets plugged in it’s immediately that tone. I’m getting a mustang 90 tomorrow morning and I plan on doing this build, slanting the p90s but adding the dynamic tailpiece and the proper mustang switching. Should be interesting. Yours came out sweet though. Good job.
I own a mustang 90 and I plan on doing this build. How are you going to add the tremolo?
Joon Lee it I add the tremolo I’d have to rout the body.
Joon Lee I might just add a tele bridge though and cut the metal plate to get the tele bridge pup slot out of the way. I’m in the fence about which way to go with the bridge.
🤘🤘
It looks and sounds grate mate can you do a jaguar next or maybe the blue one idk this was a really rad little series to watch or maybe even the telacaster paint job he had the sunburst painted blue with a Hart showing the sunburst finish
Dang who's paying for all these guitars ? 😂😂
The Meat Manifesto idk man CZcams 😂
😂😂 I wish they would
Brilliant work Rob , just a pity you didn't live next door to me i'd always be calling round :)...oh i hate soldering...and am i right in thinking the fumes from solder is toxic ???
To be fair I don't particularly like soldering, guess they are toxic 🤣😜
I have a question, i have a bullet Mustang with the same tremolo that you're showing, if i use the tremolo bar should i use top wraping for the strings or just normally like you put in this Mustang? Awesome video btw!🤘🏻 🤘🏻
thanks bro, just string it the standard way :)
Hi Rob, guitar looks stunning! Sorry to hear about the wiring problems, I've been having very similar issues with my jaguar, the bridge position coil split roller is stuck in single coil mode no matter where it is moved. I'm getting it fixed on Tuesday, I think it's just a bad solder joint. Guitar sounds ok, nothing personal to that guitar but to be honest I'm not the biggest fan of how any mustangs sound. I much prefer the sound of jags with humbuckers 😂, I'm busting to get my hands on the Cobain signature lol. Also what do you think of the squire classic vibe telecaster? I want to get a sunburst one with double binding and get a Seymour Duncan Hotrail in the bridge, I think it will be awsome! I played a cheaper fender tele in a local guitar shop and I think I've got a weakness for them 😂
Go for the Fender Classic Player HH much better sounding guitar and more versatile with the coil blending than the KC, I've had both the Cobain Jag I wasn't impressed with.
The Meat Manifesto I've got a classic player jag, but it's modded with the DiMarzio pickups that Kurt had in his, it's a great sounding guitar.
No need for the KC Jag then
Good job mate, did you find the correct wiring diagram for the humbucker and single coil?
From memory it had a faulty selector switch, been quite a few years since I recorded this video.
Hi Mister Manifesto, i'm tired boying expensive guitar, i'm thinking about taking one squier en put good pick up.
What's your opinion on your squier mustang with JB ?
Great chanel by the way ! greeting from Quebec
So awesome. Huge bummer that the switches are acting funky but you’ll get there.
Something is playing up, I took it apart this morning and wired it a different way still the same.
I'm sure the switches are the problem
I may take the switches apart
Ohh man. What an absolutely bummer. Hopefully you get it situated.
I've taken it apart totally wired it again 2 different ways still the same problem, I'm thinking the humbucker is the problem
The Meat Manifesto
Why would the humbucker effect it?
so far so good rob! i might have a solution to the switches being temperamental. i did a rewiring of my duo sonic last summer and i tested the electronics before screwing in the pickguard and it was okay however once i screwed the pickguard on and strung her up nothing was coming through. through trial and error i figured out that i put the toggle switch upside down! something about it being upside down lead it to short out once the electronics were snug inside the cavity. i flipped the switch around and she’s been rocking out ever since 🤟🏻 so maybe you could take a look at your pickup switches and see if they’re facing the right way under the pickguard? anyways it sounds good so far rob! i’m really digging it 👍🏻
I'll check the switches but I'm sure these can be fitted either way I've taken some apart before on my old Japanese Mustang, but thanks I'll definitely give it a go.
I've found a wiring diagram for a Jagstang looks like the Humbucker needs wiring in different to a single coil, will be trying it today
I know you said the Jaguar was on the horizon, but maybe one day after that do you think you'd do an Eddie Vedder "arrow" tele?
That's a fine guitar too, you know I had a black sparkle Tele about 3 years ago and it did cross my mind back then but I wasn't making CZcams videos then. It's been noted
Would it be possible to do a jaguar Kurt Cobain budget build and add some humbuckers anything is possible just an idea I came up with?
It's on the to do list 🎸👌
Hey man, cool vids. One thing, strings are 10-52 if you wanna get Kurt's sound !
Cheers
Yep I stated he used Dean Markleys 10-52s in the series, I was using what I had at the time
@@theguitarmanifesto All right. Yes and probably Ernie Ball too, that's the ones i put on my Vandalism Strat, check my channel you'll see some cool stuff ;)
I want one
It's a fine Guitar
i always use a "lighter" to burn off the exess plastic on the wire's you have to be quick though !
😄👌
@@theguitarmanifesto And since i gave up smoking , oh 3 years ago...,could i find a lighter? nope , but they are part of my "tool-kit" :)
it is almost 2021 and squier didnt release left handed versions of these :(
Ah now this has just reminded , some people "twist" the wires together then solder , others just a blob of solder on each...does it make any difference as to how you do it ???...thanks Rob
I don't like twisting wires together makes it hard work if you ever need to take it apart
@@shellydrew100 no worries bro 💪
If I wanted to do a Gibson style 3 way switch it would be a whole lot easier on the wiring right?
Most definitely, check this video out similar wiring setup with 3 way toggle
czcams.com/video/iYjH_mEulD4/video.html
what wiring diagram did you use?
looks great also sounds same as fender
Yeah it's up there
Great mod. By the way, what amp do you use? Your sound's so~~~ good.
Thanks bro, I use Garageband
You mean ipad app??? Wow~surprised.
No on the iMac, I've made a few videos of my setup
This is how I use garageband czcams.com/video/WPuASaq7DzE/video.html
NICE. Badass Mustang, play the shit out of it.
Oh I will 🎸💪
Hey I'm doing a jagstang project and was wondering if it is possible to wire the same you are doing here.
Yes wiring is the same, that sounds interesting what body and parts you using?
@@theguitarmanifesto I'm not sure yet. This is my first time doing the wiring and assembly myself. The body I think I'll get from warmoth.
Getting there, a bit more tinkering she'll be good.
Hopefully I think I've found the problem the humbucker switch needs to be wired different to a stock single coil
@@theguitarmanifesto might pay to get the multimeter out and make a plan of the switching before reassembly. some switches have weird tag configuration always found it pays to check the flow with a meter. although quite often these days I'm slack and don't bother if it's a standard layout.
I double checked everything this morning even rewired it an alternative way and still have exactly the same problem, I think it's a problem with the humbucker
@@theguitarmanifesto these things happen, it's a bummer but everything is fixable, just a pain to have to do it, or return it for a replacement and wait for it to arrive, annoying either way.
Well done. I once put a Seymour Duncan JB jr. in a Japanese Fender Competition Mustang, but the result was rather disappointing. It sounded dull and lifeless.
@@divaria Thanks. I don't have the Mustang anymore, but I have a Fender American Special Strat with the Atomic Humbucker on the bridge, which does the job pretty well.
i need the soldering paper. where do i get this?
What paper?
Why did they discontinue the Kurt Cobain mustang?as nirvana fan myself I would have wanted it to have in my collection of guitars instead of having to redo everything with the squier
@alexandre moreira when do you think will have it in stock online ?
😋
Is this a keeper because of the sentimental value. If you were to sell how much would you sell this for
I'm not interested bro in 'keepers'
Will probably strip it back down worth more in parts
Is there money to be made from buying and selling guitar/ parts? Also finding a maple neck for under £100 is a pain in the ass haha
Not a lot
Did you use a 250k pot for the humbucker?
Used the stock pots like on Kurt Cobain's Mustang, sound fine as is
How do I fix the problem of the humbucker down switch when it’s down sounds light for some reason so any help?
Do you mean quiet? You need to raise it closer to the strings.
No the top pickup of the humbucker
Bottom doesn’t sound same volume as the top one
When I press down the pick guard of the switch next the humbucker then it made sound louder but when let go it goes back to quiet
It’s the same problem you had how do I fix that
No idea why people use cloth wire. It makes no difference and is a pain to work with. That and 80% of the wire was normal pvc anyway!!
Personal preference each to their own 🎸😎 don't know where the 80% come from?
The Meat Manifesto I’m being facetious! Ignore me.. i tried cloth and failed miserably!! I loved what you did with the mustang. I’m really into modding, so these vids are like therapy to me!! Your channel is my latest find, keep it up bud!!
😂😂 I find it easier to use just make sure you use the pull back version saves trimming the end pieces.
Plenty more mod videos to come and glad you're enjoying them.
Welcome to the channel 🎸😎👌
So you built a guitar that don't work properly maybe you should do part 6 on how to fix the the switch for the bridge humbucker no hate but dude this is more of a video on how to build a mustang that don't work
No this was due to a faulty switch I later found out
Maybe u should make the video dick. U get the idea
@@theguitarmanifesto glad you found the issue and it was a simple fix. Thanks for sharing the series. It’s been inspirational. I’m going to be building a Cobain Lake Placid Blue Competition Mustang, as used in the Smells Like Teen Spirit video, from a Harley Benton MS-60 Vintage Left Handed. Not sure whether to do the SD pup change as that guitar had single pups. Loving the sound of your build, though. And you can play, too.🤘🏼
