    Had a test ride on 2020 790r yesterday, bike is a hoot! Really enjoyed it on the road- plenty fast. Suspension felt outstanding. Off road I’m a relative newbie but what little I did felt fine and controlled. I think I will pull the trigger and get one ( good deals in uk on 790 ) I’m prepared to get any issues sorted as they happen, I have a good dealer. Reckon any minor ( in the big picture ) issues will be worth putting up with, yes it is expensive but once sorted I think it will be an awesome bike. Looked at and rode the T7, is not so cheap now (£9600) and for me would need suspension work & I prefer tubeless rims for an easy life. Also I like the electronics on 790- they really seem to work.
    Each to their own.

    Great review! You have covered some serious miles. I thought I had ridden a lot with 8500 on mine this year... Anyway, your cruise control issue is likely due to a bad clutch lever switch. You will probably notice that when it acts up you also can't start the bike when in gear. I got mine replaced under warranty. No problems since. (knock wood)

    I purchased the new KTM 890 Duke. Although not the adventurer , both bikes share the LC8C engine. I’m guessing KTM make a few adjustments to the mapping and torque but was always a little hesitant with KTM with the reliability aspects. I’ve now got 5000km on her trouble free and without doubt the best motorcycle I’ve ever owned. Sure there is smoother and more refined engines out there. But the parallel twin on the Ktm is like nothing else I’ve ridden. Thanks for sharing.
    As soon as my kids grow up I will be switching to an “adventurer “also. 👍

      It is a bit odd isn't it. :) One either loves a KTM for the ride it provides and puts up with the niggles, or finds something else to ride. I've owned a "sensible" Tiger 800XC since 2014, reliable as the day is long and a good bike. It's been gathering dust since this one arrived on the scene. *shrug*

    I know this is an older video but I appreciate the long term ownership video going over the 790 as we all hear the pros & cons in this internet age.
    I'm prepared for a few challenges as I had a Pan America for a year and a half with it's particular issues. (I had a 2018 -1290 for a short time but it was a bit mahusive for me) Hopefully Kim sorted a few of them in the couple years between the release of the 790 and my second year 890.

      What's involved in going to single brake in front?

    • @riderdooder
      @riderdooder Před 2 lety +2

      @@johnboy3100 there’s a kit on Rottweilerperformance with all the pieces you’ll need. I can’t remember if they have a tutorial video. We didn’t watch any tutorial or anything and came out the other end okay. Have to remove the tank and do some cable routing and a brake bleed, but it was worth it for me. Drops 7 or 8 lbs of unsprung weight, and the braking performance is still decent. The fork really came alive afterward. The main reason I did the switch was because I destroyed a rotor, and it was almost the same cost to buy another rotor as it was to get the kit. So you’ll have an extra expensive part in case you destroy the one!

      Good point. I don't really think about the chain drive much since most but not all my bikes have used one. I've owned a couple of bikes with shaft drive and it is nice to not have to think about giving the chain some attention. The biggest downside of shaft drive for me is not being able to change gear ratios to suit what I want to do with the bike. Whatever ratio the manufacturer settled on is the one you have.

Haven't ridden in 25 years (last bike was a 1984 GPZ 1100), and after thumbing through the 400+ page owners manual, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with the bewildering array of modes, ABS, traction control options, and wondering if I should spend the money to have the Rally mode, cruise control, and quick shift unlocked before I take delivery.
    Any advice to shorten my learning curve?

    • @Windblown
      @Windblown  Před 3 lety +3

      Nice way to jump back into riding! Yeah, bikes have changed a bunch. I'd hold off on the upgrades and just ride the bike. The quickshift is kind of neat. I have mine disabled though and never use it. The Cruise is nice for extended hwy blasts and I use it then, otherwise not important. The Rally mode is cool and I do occasionally make use of it but 99.99% of the time I have ABS set to offroad, throttle mode set to street, and TC set around 5. That's a setting that is very similar to what you can set with the stock baked in modes without buying Rally mode. In short, I'm pretty old school in a lot of ways too and once I find a setting I like I just leave it there and seldom bother with pushing a bunch of buttons and changing modes. Enjoy!

      Before you go you may want to inspect the fuel pump and add a fuel sock if the quality of gas will be questionable. I'd also look at installing a pre filter to supplement the air filter. Take along an oil filter so you can do an oil change if needed. If you have a good skidplate and handguards you should be good to go. Have a great trip!

    Thank you for your review. I’m considering an upgrade to the 790. Would you say that this bike at 44000km is still a good option? That kind of kms fits my price range? Do I wait a bit and buy newer model with less KM? I also looked at the 1050 (stunning bike) but I do about 60% of my riding on dirt. So this would work better for me. Plus the weight is a massive factor for me. I am tall but light rider and love an agile bike. I’m currently on a g310 but it’s evident that I ride way too hard for this little bike. I need to sell it before I break it. 😂 Thank you.

    When you say "fuel sending unit failed" are you saying the fuel gauge quit working (no big deal) or the fuel pump quit working (disabling the motorcycle)? Thanks for the 25k feedback as I research a 890 R...

  • @wxm8562
    @wxm8562 Před 2 lety

    Good to see a real world review by someone with 25k miles of personal experience. I'm guessing you chose the R version because you ride more aggressive terrain where the upgraded suspension is necessary? How do you feel the R works for long stretches of pavement at highway speeds? I considered the R for the suspension but I wouldn't be doing anything too much more than dirt and gravel and I think the regular version might be a little more geared toward the average person that will be riding these bikes. The tiny windshield on the R doesn't look like it'd give you any protection.

    • @Windblown
      @Windblown  Před 2 lety

      Hi Bill. Thanks. Yeah, the R was chosen for the longer suspension travel plus I have a 34" inseam so I even added the tall seat to mine and slightly lowered pegs to open up some leg room. The R was no issue on pavement. Wind management isn't stellar. With the stock R screen it ranges from ok in the low position to head throbbing in the high position for me. Have a buddy that rides the S and loves it and we've ridden some pretty tough terrain together. If the S doesn't feel to cramped and you're not planning on blasting over rocks and trees I'd say the S will work every bit as well.

      Hi Giles. The ride that convinced me to search for something I'd enjoy a bit more for long days on pavement was a trip I took that was a bit over 900 miles on pavement to get to a 1200 mile long Dual-sport route, then 900 miles back home. I wanted more comfort yet still be able to handle the hardest riding I want to do when a long way from home. The 790 filled that role for me better. Though the 690 was a hoot on the 1200 miles DS route! I have not heard of any major issues with the 890. A few reports of poor cold starting and that's about it.

I had meant to mention that I occasionally had to thumb the starter a couple of times early on in the ownership when cold starting and forgot to bring it up as it never caused me a problem. I did go through the valves at 12k miles as standard maintenance and didn't run into any concerns. I've added a fair number of modifications to the bike and one of them is a fuel controller and that eliminated the occasional cold start issue. Going over the list of mods would have doubled the length of the video, LOL. Maybe I should do a video of just the mods and why I made each of them?

    • @Windblown
      @Windblown  Před 2 lety +1

      If the tank is building pressure it's due to the vent not working properly. There are two hoses that attach to the tank under the front of the plastic ring surrounding the gas cap. The one on the right is a gas overflow/water drain line that drains the well under the cap. The one on the left is the tank vent line that allows air to enter and escape from the tank. If this line is pinched the tank can't vent the pressure created as the gas heats up. It also won't let air if it's pinched to let tank pressure equalize. The other problem can be the flapper valves built into the locking mechanism of the gas cap itself. Removing the flapper valves will eliminate the problem. There is a long thread on the subject on ADVrider.com On the second page I posted photos of where the flapper valve is buried inside the gas cap. Here's a link to the subject - advrider.com/f/threads/vapor-pressure-build-in-gas-tank.1432023/

    What do you say about it's off road performance compared to 690 enduro

    • @Windblown
      @Windblown  Před 3 lety +3

      The 690 is better in three areas. 1) If the terrain is so difficult you have to slow down to a walking pace or less and find yourself constantly putting a foot down then the lighter weight of the 690 is an advantage. In super soft terrain (deep mud, sand, etc) the extra weight of the 790 requires a bit more speed to avoid getting bogged down. 3) If the terrain is super tight and you find yourself having to squeeze through trees or boulders the 690s narrower profile wins. However the turning radius seems better on the 790 so on twisty terrain there are times the 790 can be better.
      The 790 is better in fast chop and high speed moderate hits (larger rocks, trees, etc) It's suspension is more predictable, the front does not deflect off rocks like the 690 tends to sometimes do. The 790 just tracks better overall. The 790's low center of gravity gives it great natural slow speed balance and I find it's easier to stay on the pegs at slower speeds on the 790.
      Overall - Any time I can be moving fast enough to keep my feet on the pegs and the terrain is open enough to allow the 790s wider stance down low to slip thru I prefer the 790.

    • @Windblown
      @Windblown  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks! Lifting bikes doesn't get easier with age, that's for sure! My method goes against the grain of most every "How to lift your ADV bike" video or article which is almost always demonstrated on nice flat level ground with good traction. The problem with lifting with your back to the bike as often shown is the rider exerts a good deal of sideways force on the bike especially early in the lift which will cause the tires to slide when on leaves. mud, or wet rocks or unstable ground. The other issue with that technique is that it requires tucking the lower handlebar in towards the bike which causes the front wheel to contact the ground further from the point you are lifting and increases resistance to the lift. So... My goto method is to swing the lower handlebar out towards the front of the bike and lift with both hands under the bottom of the lower handguard. This swings the back of the front tire down and gets it "under the bike" quicker as you lift. It also exerts much less sideways force (though you can still use sideways force if conditions allow by walking forward to ease strain on the back. It's still not much fun but it makes the difference between getting the bike back up and not getting it back up for me. Hope that helps! YMMV.

Sure, it gives the bike a better center of gravity, but cracking a fuel tank while you're out in the middle of nowhere is a situation I'd rather avoid. Steel only moves and bends so many times before it comes apart. The stress fractures were predictable. The tanks HAVE to hit something some time.
