    Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
    Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on CZcams. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
    Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

    My thought process on being a burden to spouses is that my wife chose me. She knew every single thing "wrong" with me and all the things I will need help with from day to day and in the future. She decided that wasn't burdensome. That doesn't mean I wouldn't be a burden on someone else though and I know I would be because I've been that before for my family. They struggled with me a lot throughout the years and I felt that every day, my wife hasn't once in 14 years made me feel like I'm a burden in any way to her. After about 10 years I finally realized she's right. I'm not a burden to her. I'm the human that brings her joy and comfort. I make her laugh every day. I am a positive part of her life every single day and that doesn't sound like a burden. I'm almost sure hannah feels similarly.

      Well said, and I am happy that you and your wife found love and joy together. That’s a special thing to find in life and not everyone has the luck to find their person (able bodied or different in their own special way)❤️ I wish you many more years of happiness together!

      It's beautiful that you were brave enough to finally realize and accept what she's been telling you... that you're not a burden. It takes courage to accept that. And Lord knows some people will always want you to believe the worst. But that's about them, not you. ❤️❤️

    • @dreamcrone
      @dreamcrone Před 2 lety +9

      I can’t believe how rude some people can be! No one should make assumptions about other’s relationship. It is actually much more information about them! They can only imagine it being a burden because they would feel that way! Your relationship is inspirational, not because one of you has a disability, but because you desire to give to each other to the best of your abilities. You work at it, and you communicate well. Ignore the short sighted.❤️

    Hannah: what misconceptions did you have about disability / inter-abled relationships before meeting Shane, that you wish you could go back and tell your earlier self different?
    Shane: are there any misconceptions you have had about inter-abled relationships ( things you thought would be a big thing, turned out not to be a thing at all)?

      @LadyAurian Před 2 lety +10

      Very true. But I also wonder, do these people go around leaving those comments to couples where the husband is essentially a man child that does nothing even though he could? I rather doubt they do. I think they just mind that Shane doesn't do those things because it's by disability that doesn't, rather than choice, which is ridiculous.

    I grew up with a kid whose Dad had CP. He was active in the school, boy scouts, community. My Dad was friends with him so we got together frequently with our families. My friend Doug was frequently teased, bullied embarrassed, sad by so many children about his Dad calling him the "R" word, stupid, goofy and much worse they would imitate how he walked and talked. Since you guys want kids, how will you handle if your child finds themselves being bullied or teasing them about Shane? How do you feel its best addressed with the parents of the bullying kids? I grew up in the late 60s early 70s so things may be different now, more awareness. Doug's Dad was super funny and soooo smart. Worked full time in an academic position and there were 4 kids in his home.

I have 2 sisters that are paraprofessional aides and there are programs in schools for disability awareness or inclusion. The biggest thing I get now is kids coming up to me asking why my hands/face are like that. Rude? Maybe, but I love answering then because it puts the kid more at ease.

I love talking to people about my disability, especially kids because then they can say disabled people are cool! It’s also funny watching the reaction of the parents with the kids because they cringe when the kid asks me a question and are apologetic about it. I always say I’d rather them ask rather than stare and wonder, usually relaxes them.

    • @mahna_mahna
      @mahna_mahna Před 2 lety +1

      I am so glad there's much more of an effort at inclusion and sensitivity than when I was in school. My 10 y.o. son has ASD (with most of the hallmarks of what they previously called Asperger's) and ADHD, with a good deal of sensory processing issues and physical and verbal tics. His school has been so accommodating and invested in him, which I can't all put down to it being a small Montessori school. The culture really has changed, no matter how many people try to drag us back. There used to be much more of strong cultural link between being able-bodied/minded and "acting right" and being disabled/non-neurotypical and "acting wrong." It's not perfect, but people are much more able to realize a person's worth is independent of that.

    Question for Monday grub bag: Hannah, have you had exposure to the disability community prior to meeting Shane? If so, what was that like? Did it help you in any way when you met Shane? Or have you had no experience?

    Well, I absolutely love you both. You both are such an inspiration. I am a single father of two girls which I raised for the last 12 years. I have had them watch your videos with me so they would understand why I look forward to seeing you both. I tell them it’s like hanging out with friends. About this video on a funny note. Shane while you are sitting in your recliner chair smoking your pipe and pondering the universe you can look up on the wall above the fireplace and see the beautiful picture of the moon that Hannah took. Lol

    I was told in my past two relationships that “well you should feel lucky/grateful/or excuse my lying (etc.etc.) because “you know, you’re a lot with your physical disabilities.” I feel tears coming up just writing this. My question is do you know any lovely couples like yourselves where the woman is disabled and the man loves her for all that she is, as she is and doesn’t feel burdened or say she is?
    Thanks very much. That’s the least of my faults. Lol 😂 I don’t like going anywhere unless my list of ‘important’ questions is answered either Hannah. 😊💕

      You bring up a good point because it’s true the only couples I follow on CZcams is where the male is disabled. My daughter is physically disabled she’s only six but your comment really puts it in perspective for me for her future.

      I'm glad you know your worth when others have been too dense to see it. That doesn't take away the loneliness, I know, but it keeps you from being with people who don't deserve you. Be gentle with yourself and hang in there!

      @@crystalortega2156 thank you so much for responding. I have faith for your daughter moving forward in all ways. I know that’s easy to say. Things are changing. I want to see more inclusion especially for upcoming generations. I admit, I selfishly want my own love story too. People like Hannah and Shane are one ‘forever’ example of that. I hope they share that they at least know some couples where the man is able bodied and the woman has limitations. I want to be seen so your daughter feels free and all children that being a physically challenged female doesn’t at mean there’s a stigma that prevents us from love like anyone else. I want to meet someone too. I truly want evidence that it works both ways. I want a loving, funny, beautiful relationship and I’m not seeing it in the media (nor my love life yet). I’m hoping Shane, Hannah, or anyone comes forward. We all deserve to see ourselves represented to help us know we’re lovable and valuable partners. I am finally becoming more vocal as I’m getting older. I’m determined to do what it takes to switch the roles. I want to see equality. When I find my forever love and there aren’t any visible examples for children like your daughter to actually ‘see’, I’ll consider making a channel with my true loves full commitment. Every child no matter their situation deserves and frankly needs to see themselves as lovable contributing members of society. That’s the true disability if they don’t see themselves reflected in society. Sorry, ranting. It’s meant from my heart. Wishing you, your daughter and loved ones every blessing. Thank you so much for relighting my spark. ☀️🦋🌸💕💫

      @@BumblesZ You were not ranting lol. your comment was absolutely beautiful it actually made me cry because of your passion and I would love to see physically disabled women represented with love as you mentioned so my daughter understands that she isn’t alone and you know that she can find love too granted she’s only 6 years old right now but trust me 10 years goes by really quickly and when she’s 16 and she’s looking for that boyfriend and nobody wants her you know it’ll be amazing for her to see channels such as yours to show her love will come her way. I appreciate your comment and I do hope you find that true love. It’s women like you that really allow me to see a bright future for my daughter. ❤️❤️

    Shane, I think you are the very opposite of a burden. I mean, it's obvious. You provide Hannah with one of the most unique life experiences two people can share. Just because you can't make a meal I think minimizes your contribution (I know you know this). You give Hannah so much and how could she fight back and tolerate the haters if her tank wasn't full from what you give her. You are not a burden - No way. I'm sorry you have to tolerate such a comment from anyone.

    Do you know what I find amazing? that long before you two came here, you agreed to be there for each other and you would find each other and you would be there as a couple to love each other to help each other, so I think it's amazing that you found each other, this is an agreement between you two long before you came to this world, you don't remember it but you made it ,you made that Pact,that's why you guys are where you are today,you two have always been a couple,and thought it would be fun and challenging to have one of you guys have a disability and the other not,and to see if you would make it even if faced with this particular challenge, back then you knew it would go so fast,this life, but now that your here,it can almost be forgotten, but you two are doing it,what a great love!it will go down in the eternal book of love as one of the great ones,you have an innumerable amount of watchers cheering you on,God is so good.
