- Mt Ruapehu is located in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand. It's a popular destination for skiing, snowboarding, hiking, nature lovers and holiday goers. Ruapehu is home to two ski fields, Whakapapa and Turoa.
We stayed at Powderhorn Chateau in the small town of Ohakune. It's a warm and cosy accommodation with friendly staff, located roughly 20 mins from Turoa and about 45 mins from Whakapapa.

Whakapapa is NZ's largest ski area. It's also where you'll find Happy Valley, a fully self contained learners' area with a gentle slope for beginners. Furthermore, it's home to the Sky Waka, New Zealand's longest gondola ride.
We recommend booking online in advance to skip the queues. Just remember to collect your snow pass first before you go pick up your rentals and allow yourself at least an hour for finding parking, collecting your snow pass card, going down to get your rentals and getting kitted out. It can get very busy!

TIP: when booking online, if you're choosing multiple different types of passes/packages (like what we had i.e. one ski rental with group lesson and one snowboarding rental), the transactions need to be done separately. The website doesn't seem to let you put it all together in one single transaction.

Hahahaha we have been on a roll with the good food lately. Recently I've been watching some vice carribean food episodes last night there was a special shop called MacKenzies that make conch salad 🥗 I was salivating big time 😂 my conclusion is I don't think Auckland has any proper Caribbean restaurants unfortunately. We're just going to need to explore the area ourselves one day.

Hahahaha thanks Nikki each week you say it's your favorite video 😂👍 mt ruapehu is the only natural ski field in the north island. It's a really popular spot too in summer you can hike up mt tongariro which is an amazing day walk. We did that in one of our much older vlogs.

Went here for school snow camp back in 2009 and it was the best experience. That's 13 years ago and I can't stop telling my wife and kids about it. This is the year I get to do it all over again with them, I can't wait. great Video 👏

Oh Yen you had me in giggles when you slipped over and still travelled down the slope on your back! I did the exact same thing and can only turn 1 way too! LOL!
Hahahah it was almost a synchronised fall with Peter 😆 I was like oh no.. how do I stop.. didn't learn that in our ski lesson hahahaha 😅 but funnily he did say just go on your back for a fun slide 🤣👍 I'm glad I didn't crash into anyone though!

Digging the fire pit they have in the restaurant - nice to warm up from that cold weather
😅 💯 we're not built for the cold but it was awesome to see the snow and luckily those wooden rooms retain heat really well

As someone who has grown up going skiing two weeks a year for 20 years, I have to say I'm impressed by how quickly Yen has picked it up. The learning curve for skiing is actually a lot steeper than for snowboardin.
Tip for Yen: if you look at the footage, you'll notice that youre bum is sticking out a little bit when you ski. That's because you're leaning backwards a little (it's what every beginning skier does instinctively). Try leaning more to the front - that's why the shins of your skiing boots are so high: to support you when you put your body weight forward. You'll find that you have a lot more control over your skis if you do so, but it feels a bit counter-intuitive at first.
Might I suggest you both wear helmets next time? Especially snowboarders have a high risk of skull fractures when falling...

Great point about the helmets. As we were editing we did think it would have been much better if we wore helmets ⛑️ especially since we fell over so many times 😅 💯 will do that next time around..

Just got back from the mountain yesterday, so it was fun to see your experience of it pop up in my feed. My first time and it was super fun, busy as because of school holidays though. Always like your videos.
😅 hahaha yeah my friends always tell me it's crazy busy in school holidays too. Lucky we went just a lil before the break.
This cozy resort and yummy foods almost make us want to be back in Winter... almost! Haha Peter plate looks just amazing. You'll need a nap after that. We haven't gone skiing in a while. We miss it.. Yen did great! We do better with snowboarding.

😁 it's always fun/ scary getting out of your comfort zone and trying something new. Skiing and snow boarding definitely a cool activity to do in winter. The courses are varied enough so you don't have to be a pro to enjoy it

😁 the lessons are about 2 hours long so hopefully you'll be able to have a decent attempt after that. It's a bit tricky but after a few tries hopefully you'll be able to get it. N yeah if not the toboggan is always fun 🤙😊

Peter & Yen, you know i can't keep quiet when i hear or see lamb shank's - do you remember the sound & facial expression that Homer Simpson make's when he's salivating about food.....yea, well that's me...hahaha. The ski resort and view's looked amazing. - there was a video scene (10.45) where Yen was skiing and then Peter speed's pass on his snowboard...it would have been the perfect shot...until that lady in the white got in the way - i don't know Pete...you should have taken her out. lol. Another great video guy's.

Hello hello 😁👋 thanks for watching. You can take your own car down then just check the morning report if the weather is fine you can drive up yourself. If it's terrible you may be able to catch a public shuttle up the mountain ⛰ there is the option to install chains yourself but we're too amateur to take that option 😂

🤔 I'm pretty sure all the snow ❄ is real but I think if anything they may have the blowers distribute it over the fields from other areas.

😅 you're sharp picking that up... yes unfortunately ski trips are def on the expensive end. The whole two days ended up over $1000 including petrol and food. There are nice local bakeries in the area where you can get breakfast and lunch for under $10.

259$ per night? That's darn expensive. Usually all your stays in Air Bnb's in NZ is around 100$ per night and they seem quite comfortable and spacious too. Why this one was so expensive?
Hello fair point, I found a lot of the airbnb in the area were around 200 ish because they were all for 4+ people. It was harder to find cheaper accommodation for just a couple. So instead we opted to stay at a nice place we've visited before.
I think Yen should just stick to saying going that way. Nice job though.👍😊
