    So cool man. I bought a 78 dt400b and I have been restoring it the past year and a half. I want to be riding it this summer.

    1977-78 have the Hitachi electrical system which is a lot better than previous but regardless, your source coil is going to fail and leave you stranded eventually. You may never be able to achieve proper combustion if its weak. But since its the hitachi system it will probably last awhile with just the coil replaced. I love these bikes. If you do happen to replace the electrical they are incredibly reliable bikes.

      Thanks for the info, I'll see if this has the original coil. I did figure out yesterday that it is not charging the battery, I suspect the regulator has failed but haven't tested it yet.

    These were a man's bike. Worth fixing. Pretty easy to work on. Doesn't look like the right flywheel nut, but it might not matter.
    The whole bike needs a restoration imo.
    My brother had two 250's, a 76/77 and a 78, I always liked the 400. Yours look pretty low mileage. I love it. ❤️

    Hi. Nice bike. I had one in the 1990 bought it for £50 quid. I rebuilt it but used it for off road. Mine did have the decompression cable that combines with the kick start but never used it. I did the frame in purple because that was Yamaha colour back then. When you kick bring the piston to the top then use your body weight to kick it over or connect the cable to the kick start for the decompression. I fitted longer front forks and raised the back up it was a lot better. There’s not many of these bikes left mine was red and white. Nice bike you’re enjoy it a lot. UK

    nice you got it sorted, might want to lap that flywheel taper to ensure it doesn't happen again :)

    • @ForceMoto
      @ForceMoto  Před 4 měsíci

      How do I do that? I've lapped valves but never a crankshaft. Would I just use a grinding compound and spin the flywheel around on it?

    • @TerraRoot
      @TerraRoot Před 4 měsíci

      @@ForceMotothat's exactly it, valve grinding compound and a few twists/spins, same as valves it should be a nice dull colour, but all over the taper surface.

    Two stroke bikes I had started easily usually 4 stroke such as big thumping xl 500 not so much. 😮btw dont overtighten thats worse than undertight as damage threads are a pain use torque wrench. 😊

    It probably has a compression release on it is there a viewing bubble on the head

    • @kermit8619
      @kermit8619 Před 4 měsíci

      In 1977 the Yamaha TT500 4 strokes had a viewing window on the head . For easy start , at compression you pull the decompressor lever and slowly turn the motor until the little tab show in the little window .You are then right past the compression and ready to kick it .

    These are great old bikes. I had a DT 250 and a DT 175MX for years and they were super reliable, but their electricals are dodgy.
    One little moan though. No gloves on and its been snowing?

    • @ForceMoto
      @ForceMoto  Před 4 měsíci +1

      You're right, it's smart to always wear gloves. Especially if the roads are slick. I'll definitely wear all my gear when I take this bike to a trail!

  • @mikeholbrook5084
    @mikeholbrook5084 Před 11 dny

    Get some gloves. You'll thank me later because you will fall off at some point. Clean the carb and check the jetting against stock jetting. You might not be getting enough fuel at high rpm. Check where the slide lock is at too.
