    I've just bought one of these and mine is perfect. I get a full 16:9 screen. Though why it has a 4:3 setting on there is beyond me. The display is perfect crystal clear. So I'm not sure why all these negative faults. I think it depends on the camera ppl have. Mine was well over 2k (English pounds). I've used it for a good few weeks now, best thing I've invested in ages. I get no grid lines either on the display. Though not sure if that's an optional thing.. I love it

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 9 lety

      davefilms345 Good to hear, that you like it. As said in the video - Just for framing it´s quite ok (and the sharpness is also good - Though not as good as some other screens, where you can also dial in a little bit of sharpness additionally to see the focus point more easily - Just if you want to - Even without the focus assist features enabled then the focus pulling is possible more easily).
      But keep also in mind: All of the software features of the DC-70 are a little bit faulty / not working as they should. If you can live with that - It´s an usable option. That´s true. I just don´t like screens, which are not working as advertised (or which have major software flaws, which are limiting the usability).
      Btw.: The grid was from the Sony VG30 camera (which was attached to the DC-70 screen for this review / test). I mentioned it in the video (through a text block). The DC-70 isn´t offering the thirds-grid-feature as an option (which I would love to have with every external field monitor though) ^^.

    Hi, so I actually bought the monitor. I don't want to watch the whole video again so: was there any way to know how much battery life is left? Seems to work quite fine with my just bought a6300 otherwise. Just have to get some shoemount or such for it... :)

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 7 lety

      Hi there. Hmm. No. There´s no way to check the battery on the screen directly.
      But that´s a limitation of nearly all monitors (only a few offer an on-display percentage indicator).
      You can use a Swit 8972 though. There you can check the battery with a button.
      Though also not THAT useful (as you need the watch at the BACK of the screen ^^).
      Another solution: Use an external battery plate for the NP-F batteries.
      (But that´s only useful if you use a rig with rails, where you can mount the battery plate.)
      But if there´s space for the plate, you can modify a voltage indicator inbetween the screen an the battery plate.
      That way you know exactly how low the voltage is.
      (And if the voltage drops to 6.2V or 6.0V for example, you know, that the battery is empty.
      At least my NP-F970 batteries are switching of at around 5.8V up to 6.0V ^^.)
      Hmm. I need to make a video about my battery solution ...
      (As I am using the NP-F batteries exactly that way ...)
      Hope that helps. ^^

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 8 lety

      +joseeduardosd Try another HDMI source to verify that the screen is still working. If it´s ok - Then it´s maybe the cable which is broke OR the HDMI port of your camera. If it´s not the monitor you can also try to connect your camera with the same cable to another monitor or TV btw. - If it´s then also not working it´s on the side of the cable or camera. But I think it´s the monitor - Got already a few feedbacks according defect units - It seems like it´s really TOO CHEAP made overall. =/

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 8 lety

      Ok. Then it´s really the screen which is defective (as I suspected). I hope you still have warranty on it. It´s also possible that only the port is defective (and needs a repair). But if it´s not covered by warranty, it´s questionable if the costs at a local repair store are a wise investment (as the screen is supercheap from scratch on) ...

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 8 lety

      Hello there - Try to connect the monitor to other HDMI devices. Maybe your camera isn´t outputting a signal at all. OR: It´s outputting a signal, which isn´t compatible to the screen. Which camera do you use btw.? Also try out a different HDMI cable (if you have one available) - Because sometimes also the cables are crap (which are included with many field monitors). THOUGH: Overall the quality is quite low (of the DC-70). So I also wouldn´t be surprised, if both screens you got are defect from scratch on. Well - It´s not fixing your problem with the DC-70 - But maybe it´s a good idea to check out the Feelworld FW759 instead (or if it´s price wise ok the new FW760). They are WORLDS ahead of the DC-70 (picture wise, features wise, built quality wise AND they work as they should) ...

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 9 lety

      Ale Rodas Photography Ok. I hope I understand you right: You switch the monitor on, connect it to the D3200 and you loose the image on the DC-70 after a few seconds? Or do you loose it as soon as you start recording on the D3200 (the D3200 drops the resolution to 720P as far as I know) - Maybe there´s a problem with the HDMI output signal. In general you could try out the screen on your computer (just connect it over HDMI, DVI to HDMI or DisplayPort to HDMI) - If it´s still not working, it´s defect. IF it´s working, it´s maybe the cable you´re using (I also had already bad cables) - OR it´s the D3200 (defect port OR the internal settings are wrong - Try to set the HDMI output to 1080P or 720P if possible - Don´t let it on "Auto" - As often the screens are then not recognized right ^^).

    Viltrox recently released a version II of this monitor... allegedly with false colors and stuff... have you had the chance to check it?

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 7 lety

      No. Sorry. I saw the DC-70HD already a few weeks ago. But it´s still coming in the quite bad enclosure (with the fiddly wheel to choose everything and the super cheap on/off switch - Also the DC plug is still above the wheel - So it´s not usable with a more low profile 90° DC plug - As the cable is blocking the wheel then ... Also still no function buttons to switch features on/off directly). So I didn´t even kept it in my backhead for a test. And since I know that Feelworld is offering a very good quality (and also a very good color accuracy out of the box), I am more focusing on them now for future tests (as they are in the same price range - Or even cheaper here in central europe). For example the FW760 (1920x1080 panel) model - Or the Feelworld F7 (also 1920x1080 panel) with the different enclosure. Would more lean towards the F7 actually ...

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 7 lety

      Hi there. Yes. The DC-50 is quite old already - And so there´s only a mini HDMI cable included. I am using actually (mainly) the DeleyCon cables. But they are not that easy to get everywhere with micro HDMI to HDMI and with shorter lengths. I recommend to go for a 0.5m cable - It´s the perfect length (1m is too long already and 0.3m sometimes too short - OR not available at all ^^). Here´s a general link to Amazon: amzn.to/2sscNT9 - Search tag "slim micro HDMI 0.5m". Its important, to add the "slim" tag, so you´re getting the thinner cables. The thicker ones are WAY too stiff for camera use - They are just adding strain to your connections - Especially on the micro HDMI port of your A6300. The LINDY Cromo seems nice (and look quite similar to the DeleyCon - But with even higher quality ^^): amzn.to/2uviHiM If you´re not located in the us, then just use the search tag "slim micro HDMI 0.5m" at your local amazon page. ^^

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 2 lety

      Hmm. Regarding the Viltrox page only FM500H / QM71D / QM91D and the NP-F series batteries (NP-F550/570/750/770/950/970 and similar ones). Btw.: The model is quite old already (the video was shot in 2014). Better check out for example the more rugged Atomos Shinobi (5 or 7 inch models) - They offer a hard front and are therefor quite safe to transport / quite resistant against a breaking panel. And used they are quite affordable available sometimes (at least the 5 inch model). Or check out the SWIT CM-55C (5 inch) or SWIT CM-S75C (7 inch). All listed model also comie with high brightness screens (the 7 inch models even with 2200 and 3000 nits for outdoor shooting). Maybe save some money instead of going for a cheaper model ^^. Have fun shooting. LG

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 9 lety

      KISHOR WAGHANNA Sure. The X920 has live-view HDMI out (as far as I know you can even disable the overlays to get a "clean" feed). Though: I recommend to switch to a fixed 1080P output (if selectable in the HDMI out settings - Not 1080i or "AUTO") - As the DC-70 is working better with progressive signals (the image is better / "clearer"). That´s also the case with many other (newer) screens - MustHD M501H, Aputure VS-2 and so on. So always try out the signal types (if you use a new field monitor with your equipment). Just a general (important) info =).
      Hope that helps ^^.

    will the FW 759 work with a blackmagic cinema camera since that has SDI ports?

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 7 lety +1

      You need a converter to adapt the SDI to an HDMI singal. Atomos is for example selling such adapters (which you can put inbetween the NP-F Battery and the monitor (so the adapter AND the monitor both get the power from the same battery). I recommend to start a search for a used model - They sell for quite cheap from time to time. Or buy an SDI monitor from scratch on. Btw. a hint: ALWAYS plug and unplug SDI cables which no device is running. Otherwise you could get a static discharge (which is easily damaging the BMCC camera). Happens quite alot - And it´s a mess to repair (as the SDI output is sitting on the same board as the other hardware) (!)

      oh my god. thank you so much. this was incredibly helpful. i probably would have left the cables while devices were running. you saved me tons of headache today. that i thank you for. as for the setup, i guess i have to look for a SDI converter then. bummer!

      As you saw at 26:15 its only possible vertically (not horizontally). There is only this option in the menu. If you want a screen which flips both (horizontally, veritcally or both) then check out the Feelworld screens. Even the quite old FW759 model supports it. There are now also way better models on the market. Feelworld FH7 (7" full HD), F550 or F570 (5" models - also with full HD panels) or the brand new Feelworld T7 (which is similar to the FH7 - But its equipped with a metal housing). ^^

    Hi.. What are the alternative monitors you walked about to this monitor? Can you list them here? Make/Model #

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 10 lety +2

      wwsvs Well - There´s the H056 (V2) I also reviewed within my channel - There´s no website (from the producer) as it´s kind of an "OEM" model. But you can find it on Ebay from various dealers (as "5.6 1280x800 external monitor" or similar). It´s a quite good "middle way" inbetween price, features and overall performance. And it´s resolution wise / sharpness wise a very good choice.If you want something smaller & lighter at about the same price you can also check out the quite new MustHD H501 (5" 800x480 resoution) screen. It´s one of the best (affordable) sollutions for mounting on a shoulder rig for example (as it´s not THAT huge and heavy) - AND you get a remote control (which you can mount on your handles or on the fluid head handle to control the andvanced features remotely for example - Also REALLY nice). You can check it out at www.musthd.comThere are also bigger models (M601 and M701) from MustHD - But they are way pricier. Though: Check out the bigger M701 model (7" 1280x800 resolution) - Not THAT dirt cheap any more (especially compared to the also 1280x800 resolution H056 (V2) screen). BUT: You get a very good (and high resolution) IPS panel (with better color reproduction, viewing angles and black levels) - The other models only have less quality TN panels. AND: You also get the same remote feature (like with the already mentioned M501 screen). Also really nice for stationary shots on a tripod (as you don´t need to touch always the screen to enable or disable a software feature). Forget about the M601 (5.6" model) - It´s only equipped with a TN panel AND it´s only a 6 bit panel too (the M501 and M701 are equipped with higher quality 8 bit versions) (!)Btw.: Sure - There are also the cheaper lilliput models (with higher resolutions) - But I would only check out the 1024x600 resolution models (as they are cheap enough to be an option) - The "5D-II" model for example - Or the quite similar (but better built) 665P model. They are quite ok resolution and overall performance wise - BUT: The Lilliputs are quite bad software wise - They kind of ALL have software issues. Especially the "advanced features" (like peaking, histogram and so on) are often faulty - Or they are at least dropping / ignoring the calibration settings (according the image - brightness, sharpness, saturation and so on). So I would only go for the standard editions (as they are even cheaper available - And you don´t pay for features which are faulty - And / or at least quite "annoying"). Built quality wise and image wise the both mentioned lilliputs are quite ok (!)Well - These are the options which are worth mentioning.(And which I mentioned partly in the video - At least the H056 and M501 / M701.)HTH (hope that helps) ^^

      Well - The H056 (V2) is listen on Ebay quite often as "1280x800 HD 5.6" monitor". It´s more or less an non-brand monitor (just called "HD field monitor").
      The MustHD screens you can find directly from the manufacturer here: www.musthd.com (they also include free express shipment with their prices - So you can order there without any additional costs according the shipment).
      The Lilliput screens you can also find on the official Lilliput websites / webshops. OR on Ebay / online communities used and new.

      Yes it is / should be. But better check out my Feelworld FW759 video - It´s a WAY better screen. Both - the Feelworld FW759 and FW760 - are signifficantly better (overall) - But especially also according the factory colors. Worth every cent you pay more for those models (and the FW760 is even 4K compatible over the HDMI input - So it´s also way more future proof). Hope that helps ^^. LG

      I am not sure - I think it was a battery I had lying around. But you can also power it over the 2.5mm port at the back (with compatible 3rd party ac/dc adapters). Btw.: Overall it´s better to keep an eye on the Feelworld FW759 or the new F7. Those are WAY better models - in every aspect - Especially the Feelworld F7. The Viltrox DC70 isn´t really worth its price in my opinion - Especially nowadays, where more and more 1080P panel models get released ...

    will it work with Nikon D3200?

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 9 lety +1

      Hi. Hmm. Is it outputting a live-view picture over HDMI (if you connect a TV set for example)? If yes, then you can also use the DC-70 with it (to use it for composition / framing). Though: Keep in mind that (as far as I know) not the entire screen is used - As the D3200 (like other Nikon / Sony / Canon DSLRs) are also displaying overlays - And it´s not outputting a clean 1080P image (and a different aspect ratio). But it´s still better than the (way smaller) internal screen ^^.
      Btw.: I am not THAT of a fan of the Viltrox DC-70 - The hardware quality also seems to be not the best (as I got now the THIRD confirmation of a dead DC-70 after just a few days / weeks of usage).
      Alternatives are maybe the "FEELWORLD FW-759" (or it´s 1:1 identical brother - The "SEETEC ST-699"). They also offer an 1280x800 7" IPS screen, focus peaking and also a few other features (at a quite good price of around 120 up to 130 bucks incl. shipment). I don´t know how good it is - But it´s at least an alternative (you could check out or keep in mind) ^^.

      Nope. Only HDMI. Check out following models (all with native 1080P panel and alot of software features): Feelword G70: amzn.to/2tTwHm2 Feelword G55: amzn.to/2tT7hFi Or Lilliput Q7: amzn.to/2t0DOwa Or Lillput Q5: amzn.to/2rWkTD9 Alternatively go for an used SDI recorder - They are getting cheaper and cheaper. (Atomos Samurai Blade or the 1st revision of the Atomos Shogun for example.) They cost maybe even less - AND offer also really nice software features. Especially the Soghun with the native 7" 1080P screen. The Samurai Blade is nice too. But only 5" (and 1280 resolution).

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 8 lety

      Definitely FW759! WAY better colours, sharpness and "working" features.
      The bugs of the DC-70 are now maybe fixed (with newer firmware versions).
      But even if they are fixed now - Again: FW759. Best bang for the buck screen actually.

    • @MuxyMusic
      @MuxyMusic Před 8 lety

      do you think having all the feature buttons on the fw759 is better, thanks for that

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 8 lety

      Sure. With the DC-70 it´s quite annoying to enable and disable the features. AND as said: The FW759 is in basically every aspect better (also sharpness, image "clarity", colours, features and so on).
      But test our your camera first (if the HDMI is working the way you need it) - With a TV for example. I always get messages from people with cameras, which are not outputting and HDMI signal ...

    • @MuxyMusic
      @MuxyMusic Před 8 lety

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 8 lety

      MuxyMusic Yes. Sure it works with the 7D Mk2. Just mentioned it, because many people don´t test their cameras before buying (and then the disappointment is big that no picture output is possible). The DC-50 is btw. also not the best (according overall quality). If you want a VERY good 5" model, just search for the IKAN DH5 (or the new DH5e). It´s also available under other brands (Neway, PortKeys and so on). But you can get the DH5 also used / as a display model quite cheap. Just check out Ebay ^^. It´s not the cheapest model - But coming with A LOT of features (and a really good 5" 1920x1080 IPS panel). Definitely worth a look. Btw.: The PortKeys you actually can also find under "IKAN LH5s" - Don´t ask me why they are selling it with this naming -.-

      @AustrianGeek  Před 9 lety +1

      Elemino Musgrove Well - It´s better to have high expectations instead of low ones ^^.
      And it makes no sense to say "it´s ok for the price" if you´re unhappy with it a few days or weeks after purchasing it.
      You can still buy it - But you know at least of all the "quirks" and cons it has BEFORE doing so ... =)

    • @Elemino
      @Elemino Před 9 lety

      I don't disagree about the cons of the device, but it seems you expected it to be a lot better. lol
      I just feel if you're a professional and have a camera that cost a few thousand dollars, you probably shouldn't buy a monitor that only cost $150. I'm betting for the intended market, this is fairly suitable, but the features that don't work are still disappointing.
      The battery this thing uses is very common, and most devices that use that battery don't include it, so there's no surprise there. Will it power up with USB power?

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 9 lety +1

      Elemino Musgrove Maybe true yes (according the intended market).
      But many people don´t WANT to invest in a good monitor.
      (Not even while owning super expensive cameras and other equipment. ^^)
      The USB btw. is only intended to be used for firmware updates (as far as I know).
      (At least there wasn´t stated anything according powering it from the USB port.) =)

    • @Elemino
      @Elemino Před 9 lety

      I'm not surprised. I was a TV salesman for years. People love spending thousands on a TV, but want to cheap out on the accessories.
      I'll have to try USB power when I get one. I plan to buy the 25,600 mAh battery pack by Anker on Amazon. The more USB powered devices, the better.

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 9 lety

      Oh. Ok. *g* - So I don´t need to tell you such stuff ^^. About the USB powering: These units are normaly not designed to be powered from the USB port (they are normaly only used once to transfer the firmware to the screen).
      There´s a high risk that you BREAK your screen - As you cannot be even sure, that it´s a standard USB protocol they are using for the transfer - It´s just a physical USB port (so to be honest: I wouldn´t recommend to test this out).
      You could make a workaround though. Just get a DC-to-DC step up converter and connect it to the PowerBank USB port (You only need a USB power cable with open ends and a 2.5mm DC calbe). It´s more DIY (I know). But that way it´s working for sure (also of a USB port - AS FAR as the USB port is delivering enough power!). Or if your PowerBank has other outputs (9V, 12V) you could even try to connect it directly to the 2.5mm DC plug at the back. But it´s maybe a good idea, to measure first the power consumption of the DC-70 - So you don´t overload your PowerBank (especially if you use one of the USB port with the DC-to-DC step up converster) ^^.

    Can I input HDMi signal and output SDI with Viltrox DC-70ex? Thank you.

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 6 lety

      As far as I found online not. Such a feature is called "cross conversion" and it semms like its not available on the DC-70ex. The Aputure VS-5x supports it as far as I remember - And just a hand full of other screens. But you don´t need to invest that much - You can also use a normal HDMI in / out screen, and use an HDMI to SDI converter at the output. There is for example also a converter available from Atomos (called the "H2S"), which is usable INBETWEEN the NP-F battery and the screen. It´s only supporting up to 1080P as fara s I know (because it´s a 3G SDI converter). But you can simply mount it at the back of any field monitor (which uses NP-F batteries). And that way you can really choose any model you like ^^.

      Thank you for reply. Hm, now I really don't know what is true: I just ask a seller on ebay about this and get this answer:

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 6 lety

      Hi there again. Checked it again - Nope. Nothing stated (even on the Viltrox page). Too bad that they also dont link to the right pdf on the viltrox (download) page. So I cannot link to the right manual here. Maybe ask Viltrox directly. But it´s just too cheap to support cross conversion ^^. Here a list of a few units which supports it: Aputure VS-5x, Lilliput Q5, Lilliput Q7, Lilliput 662/S and also the SmallHD SDI units are supporting it (the 502 for example). But you can still use an external converter. Directly on the camera (to get the signal already from the camera side over SDI and then route it through to the SDI out). Or you can also convert the HDMI output to SDI (and use standard HDMI between the camera and the monitor ^^). LG

    • @urosfri
      @urosfri Před 6 lety

      Yes, I have this micro converters:
      www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/microconverters
      but want to make a more friendly setup for my crane, If that monitor would support cross conversion, than I would not need extra adapter, extra power..One thing more than can go wrong when you are on setup.
      And I can't believe that guy from ebay sold me a thing that does not do that what I was asking for.. I just pay for it yesterday.
      About other monitors over 400 or 500 EUR / $, it is better to invest a little more and buy recorder, Inferno, Shogun..
      I just wanted something simple.

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 6 lety

      Ah. Ok. You´re using already adapters. Sure - It´s more of a mess to use those. Overall you could still wait for a good offer of the Atomos H2S (to make the package smaller) - Use a super thin and short HDMI cable and it should be not that much bigger / buliker and heavier than the fully integrated solution ^^. Saw them go for 60 to 80 bucks from time to time. If you go for the Atomos S2H you also don´t need extra power (if your monitor uses NP-F batteries). Just mount it inbetween the battery and the screen ^^.
      About the dealer(s) online: I have to defend them a little bit - They get hundrets up to thousands of messages per day. And if even Viltrox is not stating clearly what´s offered and what´s not according the DC-70ex, it is not surprising that dealers also deliver false information to customers. I also searched quite a while til I was quite sure, that it´s (really) not offering HDMI to SDI cross conversion. And honestly: I am still not 100% sure ^^.
      About recorders: Keep in mind - Only the older ones (atomos Shogun/Assassin for example) are good as monitors because the newer ones (Flame and Inferno) are coming with quite loud fans. The older ones also come with fans - But they are more silent. Just keep that in mind - Many people went for the Flame series (Ninja with HDMI only or Shogun with SDI + HMDI) and they got rid of them again just because of the higher noise levels ...
      About the screen: Just test it - Maybe it´s working. I whish you luck ^^. =)

    For about 50 dollars/euros more you can get the new DC-70 HD with an 1920x1200 IPS display and it has much better build quality with an all aluminum casing. I also tried the Feelworld FW760 for about the same price but it's build quality does not compare, all plastic and feels very cheap and flimsy.

Both are coming with the same feature set compared to the FW760 - But with more robust casings. Will it work with SONY A57.. And is it good or bad product..

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek  Před 9 lety

      Hmm. It work yes. But keep in mind, that the Sony SLT cameras (like the A57) are outputting an a little bit "weird" picture. It´s a 4/3 aspect ratio in a 16:9 video stream. So you cannot use the whole external screen to display the image. It´s a common problem with the Sony DSLRs (like with the older canons - Which always drop to 480P while recording ^^).
      About the screen: I am not that of a fan of it (as it´s just not working as promised). You can only use it for framing (even the focus assist feature is way too strong and not as helpful quite often). If you really want something better, check out the H056 (V2) screen. It´s way better (also way more rugged) - And it´s at least working as it should (you can check out the test video within my channel).
      Btw.: If you want something even better, check out the MustHD screens. Especially the M701H is really nice (it´s like an upgrade of the H056 V2 - Better panel and better features). But it´s also priced way higher. The M501H is also quite nice (VERY color accurate). But I don´t know if it´s helping anything (as it´s only an 5" 800x480 screen - AND you only get that weird upscaled 4/3 signal from your Sony -.-).
      Well - Hope that helps. ^^

Did you try the unit with another HDMI source? Maybe it´s not compatible to the source (or the HDMI out format) you´re using actually (or your HDMI port / unit is broken - wouldn´t be surprised - Heard already from other brand new non working units ...).

      If you still don´t get a signal, it´s maybe a defect. Try the screen with another HDMI source. Let´s say: A computer / notebook with HDMI out or a receiver / dvd player for example - So you know at least, that the screen (and it´s HDMI port) is working as it should. As said - I already heard from a few defect units (brand new ones). Maybe you need a replacement unit.
