That line hits so hard. Gary is such a tragic character. That this made this my favorite in the trilogy. Simon and Nick are so good at switching up their characters, and those emotional moments .
But Simon kills it in that scene. It’s so heartbreaking.
Fun Fact: The name of each pub they visit relates to the following scene.
another fun fact, you can tell whos the blanks based on the colour of the clothes they wear, i believe eveyrone whos not human has blue and those who are have green
Each pub where a brawl occurs has blue paint splattered on the sign
that is epic! never realised! 🎉
I can't believe you didn't react on the reveal that Gary is suicidal and... That might be the reason why he wanted to do the golden mile one more time before killing himself as the whole thing is hinted all throughout the movie...
Gary didn't bring any luggage with him unlike his buddies, possibly bcuz he has no plan on going back to London.
When one of his friend saw his childhood bully, Gary told him something like don't bottle up your emotions as it may comeback and be harmful or something like that and after saying that, gary said "and so I heard" hinting that he heard that a lot in his therapy sessions.
In the worlds end, andy saw his bandages showing the he's hurting himself. And that's the reason why Gary doesn't want to show his arms in the smoke house. Gary could've removed the hospital tag but he left it attached so that when he finally kill himself, his family and friends will know that he has been having anxiety or depression and that's the reason why he committed suicide and it's not his family or friends fault.
Gary had issues moving on and he's stuck in the past, he obviously doesn't want to age and wants everything to be the same when he was still in Newton haven. But despite he's fear of getting old he never shaves, beard is obviously a sign of aging but he didn't shave. The reason is bcuz Gary is not allowed to have razors in the hospital he's in. He obviously doesn't live in an apartment if you check the scene in the beginning when he was getting dressed, it's a hospital or something. Another hint of him hurting himself. And in the end of the movie, he finally shaves to signify that he's finally free and moved on.
Out of the three movies in this trilogy this is my favorite one, there are layers in the plot and I'm pretty sure there more if you rewatch it.
I think I rewatched it everyday for a week, and caught something new every time. The easy ones like how they disappear in the same order as they did as teenagers, and the more difficult ones like you just explained. I work in a high intensity CPS facility, and have had to control the entire 'no razors' and self harm situations.
What I really appreciate is how they don't beat you over the head with it and just give you subtle hints here and there to piece together. More powerful that way, even moreso than some movies meant to deal directly with the subject matter.
He did react to it and mention it in the full length reaction, just didn't make it into the edit here. He was like "wait do those bandages mean what I think it means, this got really dark" or something along those lines.
Massive props - never noticed any of that!
Not gonna lie, I had to pause the film to see the bandages properly. I could tell that something was supposed to have been revealed there, but I very much missed the bandages the first two times I watched the scene.
I've seen it so many times and I've never noticed this I'll have to keep an eye out next time
My mom said you're her favorite person I watch. Saw me watching at breakfast before work and said, "I always enjoy hearing him. He's smart and he's funny."
Haha that's awesome! I've passed the 'mom' test 😄
lmao that's sweet, tell her she's an honorary subscriber!
Check out “Paul”. Another Simon pegg film that’s completely underrated.
Omg yes!
that is my favorite film from Simon Pegg actually, so pure and awesome
Certainly Cornetto adjacent.
@@Mr_Momus ‘Cornetto-adjacent’ is a brilliant instance of term use on your part.
Very solid watch.
Hot Fuzz: Simon Pegg character's is a professional at his job. Nick Frost character's is an average at his job
Shawn of The Dead: Simon Pegg character's is an average at his job. Nick Frost character's is broke.
At World's End: Simon Pegg character's is broke. Nick Frost character's is a professional at his job
Shaun*
I was going to post this, you put it well tho
All theses films has a different view about the question of the individual (childish, closed, unsuitable) Vs society.
Shan at first he don't to loose his "freedom" (childish selfishness) against zombies of a routine society. He may lose the woman he loves, so he has to take his life into his own hands.
Hot Fuzz the town's board is what he can become, a fascist dystopia. He needs to relax. Stop wanting everything to always be perfect.
World's end he is a social misfit who fights the current society where everyone is standardized (a mix of the 2 society of the 2 others movies). He is a nostalgic who must abandon the past to grow up.
I love how the opening scene literally spoils the whole movie and you never notice until a second watch great writing
Being the huge fan of Edgar Wright I am, the first time I watched that intro sequence I thought "well, that's it. I'm sure we just watched the whole movie right there." I was not wrong.
It had the same feel as "Bloody Mary first thing, couple at the little princess, bite at the king's head, then stumble back here for shots. BANG!" except on a bigger scale.
I didn't notice this until just now but at the beginning you can see some sort of shooting star or maybe its the robot dudes first contact
@@x9gwalker415 Edgar's confirmed that it was the aliens arrival at Newton haven plus basil says remember the shooting star that was them on June 22nd 1990
@@omardrummond5138 ooh snap ive seen this movie soo many times and still picking up small details. Thanks man I had no idea
If you like Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and you haven't seen "Paul," I highly recommend it.
Yeah great choice!
Yes love Paul!
That was a fun one.
I think this movie really stands out in the trilogy because of how mature and sincere it can get when dealing with gary and depression. of course it is most obvious in the reveal between gary and andy at the world’s end, but watching it a second time there are many smaller hints that gary is suicidal throughout, and it makes the film a bit sad on a rewatch. gary is the only one who didn’t bring any luggage on the trip, because he was planning on killing himself after completing the golden mile. they mention that he doesn’t go swimming anymore, and he refuses to show the scar on his elbow because he would have to roll up his sleeves and expose his wrists. you also realize that it isn’t just an aa meeting at the start, but a suicidal support group in the hospital he was living in. there are so many more details regarding these themes within the movie but I’m tired so I’m going to stop writing. but yeah this is my favorite of the trilogy, glad you enjoyed it
For me, the best of the trilogy, and the most intricately structured. The amount of set-ups and call-backs listed on its TV Tropes page is dizzying.
Plus, ofc: "THEY TOLD ME WHEN TO GO TO BED," twinned with the reveal of Gary's bandaged wrists, is the most harrowing moment in any of them.
I love how the protagonists of each Cornetto film face a new chronologial challenge in how to live - Shaun is a young man maturing / settling down, Nicholas Angel is a slightly older workaholic who learns to appreciate life / community - and Gary, sadly, is a lost soul - who grew old(ish) without growing up and faces real despair. Simpon Pegg went into the depths for this performance.
I love this movie - one of the most underappreciated movies of the 2010s. Most people quickly disregarded it as "the worst of the 3" because of the different tone but it's neck and neck with Hot Fuzz in my opinion. The pacing, dialogue, directing is about as good as you can get and the callbacks are consistently hilarious. Definitely one that needs multiple viewings to catch every joke (especially the early foreshadowing for the first 30 minutes) and it gets better with each viewing.
This is my favourite of the Cornetto films simply because of the huge amount of foreshadowing along with all the visual humour. If you watch it again you realise that the first attempt of the Golden Mile mirrors exactly what happens throughout the film. Also all the names of the pubs reference the events that happen in them i.e. The Old Familiar looks exactly like the First Post, The Famous Cock is the bar where Gary's recognised, and the Trusty Servant is where they see the Rev. Green, one of the robots collaborators.
I know a lot of people think this is the weakest of the three but I think this one actually is the best at genre blending. Shaun obviously was flawless in horror AND comedy but the dramatic side was never too deep in it, where as in The World's End I think the backstory, the motivations and the personality flaws are really concrete and real.
I love how Edgar Wright got two James Bonds to come back as villains in his movies. What a cheeky bugger! XD Also another cool note, the voice of the android leader is Bill Nighy (Phil from Shaun of The Dead, chief Inspector in Hot Fuzz, and a whole other roles)!
And Pierce Brosnan and Rosamund Pike is of course a Die Another Day reunion
@@michaeljohn1978 Oh yeah! You're right! XD
If you want to see more from Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, you should watch Paul. Also there’s a great British sci-fi movie called Attack the Block that Nick Frost is in with John Boyega.
or the TV show 'spaced', which is hilarious. theyre both in it, but its written by pegg & jessica stevenson (who is also very funny). its UK show from before 'shaun of the dead'.
Attack the Block is hilarious 🤣
@@derkaiser1306 spaced is a must watch
@@derkaiser1306 yup. One of the episodes was based on Resident Evil, and that episode inspired Shaun Of the Dead
Something I always thought was especially interesting was that one of the baddies in Hot Fuzz and one in The World's End were also back to back James Bond actors.
Good point never put that together lol
If they make a fourth film they have to give Daniel Craig a part in it.
Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright have both joked/wished they could retroactively/digitally add Sean Connery or Roger Moore to Shaun of the Dead.
Or just cast Bill Nighy as James Bond
And Rosamund Pike was in the last Brosnan Bond.
You would love the show “Spaced.” It’s all on CZcams and it’s the beginning of their work.
This is an amazing show they had so much talent way back when they began
Might be too British for him to fully enjoy all the subtler aspects haha
Just finished Spaced again yesterday, actually. LOOOVE that show. (Nice to see both Tires and Marsha in this :) )
@@hopefulkoala01435 You wouldn't happen to have 20 quid I could borrow...? :D
Fun fact: this film was filmed in my hometown ‘Letchworth Garden City’ in the U.K.
What are the pubs like? lol
I know Hot Fuzz was filmed mainly in Wells in Somerset. I can't think of any significant movies that were filmed here in Torbay, though.
Oh, maybe Blackball (2003), but it wsan't that great.
And "Warhorse" was filmed mainly on Dartmoor I think, but that doesn't count. lol
Oh, and "Churchill: The Hollywood Years (2004)" was filmed around here, but I never saw it. It looked pretty bad.
(it was a spoof, starring Christian Slater as a G.I.... as... Winston Churchill. Yeah, I know.)
@@danculbert6349 You mean the same England that is in the UK? Moron.
Most of it was filmed in Letchworth, but a couple of the scenes are actually Dorking in Surrey, which is my home town :D
@@robertwinslade3104 same here came here to say that also they filmed the outside of the pubs the inside is somewhere else as the club is the cinema and one of the pubs is the train station
Hahaha hell yes man! This is my favorite Edgar Wright film! It's so good. Also..we gotta do the World's End pub run someday haha.
It’s personally my favorite of the Cornetto Trilogy, I don’t know believe it’s the best, Hot Fuzz is arguably the best made, but The World End is endearing, hilarious and entertaining
wasn’t expecting to see you here man haha just came from your little women video!
you two need to collab sometime! you’re my favourite movie commentary channels aside from Pretty Much It
Edgar Wright always putting out the good stuff! Can't wait to see your video for American Psycho 😄
You two are keeping me sane through these times, thank you both for the amazing videos!
This is the most mature of the Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy in a number of ways. I have a particular fondness for this one; though I feel Hot Fuzz is probably the most fun; and Shaun of the Dead is probably the most successful in its genre.
I appreciated this movie more on repeat viewings, as the revelations put new shading on characters' words and actions, especially Gary's, and you better see the parallels with the original attempt at the Golden Mile.
Having been a teen goth and Sisters of Mercy fan, I got a few more tidbits of humor in this movie that most people don't. Like: When the choir and musical notes of blank Gary's entrance played, I was the only one in the theater who laughed, having instantly recognized Sisters of Mercy's "This Corrosion." (The song plays again at the end.)
This is by far my favorite of the trilogy and I genuinely do not understand why it is not held in more high regard. I may be biased because this is my favorite genre explored by the Cornetto films. Gary King is such a unique character for movies, yet I know a lot of guys like him in real life. Your reactions are often the highlight of my week! Keep them coming!
You could react to "Office Space." Mike Judge had a lot of influence on other comedic filmmakers.
Yes! 100% Office Space & Idiocracy!
Gotta be a patreon to suggest what he watches
Can’t wait to watch this commentary 😍
Hope you enjoy!
"You've got blue on you"
I saw this DVD when it came out in K Mart Australia. Being a huge fan of the other 2 movies didn't look at the back of the DVD cover bought it went home and watched. Seeing you enjoy the twist the same way I did without knowing anything brought back memories.
Btw your reactions to movies the best I've seen. Must be the calm voice lol
3:09 Girl on the left from Shaun of the Dead ("There is a girl in the garden")
"She's SO drunk!"
This film is a walking foreshadowing from start to finish, that's what I love about this film
Every Edgar Wright movie is that
Any chance you'll be reviewing "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" or "Snatch" soon?
Guy Ritchie... Another awesome director
Vinnie Jones.
Those films are so hilariously unaware of how stupid their dialogue sounds, it's an extra layer of comedy on top lol. Characters taking themselves seriously saying those cockneyisms so unnaturally pretending like it's normal conversation and I have to burst out laughing at several points.
Or layer cake.
Or if you want to watch a real headfuck of a film it's gotta be revolver. I've watched that film multiple times and am still confused but in the good way
The funny part is I didn't like the ending during my first watch. It seemed like a cop-out or overdrawn silly gag at first, but now it is possibly my favourite part of all 3 films. It perhaps doesn't fit with our expectation or that we don't like something weirdly different, but the dialogue is actually pretty revealing. Like humanity's obsession with productivity and 'good' life, which are pretty easily attainable goals for a very well-engineered machine. So, an ideal human is easily replaceable by 'all-knowing network'. The only thing that does make us human, is our flaws and traits our society looks down upon. This blends very well with the character of Gary King and his contrast with his more well-to-do and mature friends throughout the movie.
Another good one if you don’t watch any trailers is cabin In the woods
Of the 3, this is probably my favorite tone shift. Because it comes out of nowhere, and it goes 0 to 60 in a single frame. It's awesome.
As someone in the UK I always enjoy watching people outside the UKv actually enjoy our films.
People say that this one wasn't as good as the other two and I DISAGREE STRONGLY! I love all three equally and that's not even me just pandering I really do they are all so different in concept but execution was amazing and the jokes carry. It was great to see their rolls reverse and get a great display of their acting prowess through the trilogy. This one hits close to home too dude it's great 🖤
The voice of the network at the end is actually Bill Nighy... He was Kevin in "Shaun of the Dead" and the chief inspector in "Hot Fuzz"... And also Davy Jones in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise
Paul should be on the list to watch. A couple of other suggestions, the films Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
Simon pegg is my favorite actor all his characters he plays make you believe he's that person
He is really a good actor. I want to see him in other type of movies (other genres, thriller or drama)
@@SD-eo8bx it would be cool to see him play a serial killer or something, I think he would do a good job
Yeah that would definitely be cool
@@NickiTwix He did play an odd character in 'A Fantastic Fear of Everything'.
@@ajivins1 great movie too
This is my favourite of the three films because of the twist at the end. As a person who's struggled with thoughts of suicide and self harm in the past, I loved the idea that the main comic relief of the film was in fact just a deeply broken man, because it rings true to the reality of people in those kinds of situations, a lot of them do put on a carefree mask and try to be the kind of person to make people laugh.
rewatching this movie, is so hard especially towards the end.. Hot Fuzz is the best of the 3
If you notice, the main color associated with Blanks is Blue. When there's potentially Blanks around, there's a heavy amount of blue used on them or the scene around them. That's why O-Man and Peter are the only ones wearing blue, they're are the only ones to be taken by Blanks.
this movie is incredibly underrated I'm glad you enjoyed it
You’re the best up and coming creator ok this platform. Genuine reactions and a great upload schedule. Keep up the good work
You should check out: “Dead mans shoes” That guy, Paddy Considine will blow your mind.
Paddy was unemployed, not an actor on his way to the unemployment exchange when the director saw him and asked if he wanted to be in a film...
Dead Man's Shoes is a great film.
A Room For Romeo Brass is awesome too.
Heartbreaking, funny, pathetic, horrible, bleak, brutal - very cool film.
@@ajivins1 Is that right? that's crazy.
been loving watching things with you man. thanks for the high quality company
Pretty sure the girl to the left of Simon Pegg in the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting was the zombie girl in the back garden in Sean of the Dead.
I love how they've kept getting characters back from previous films.
The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy would be a great one to watch.
I love this movie. I'm so glad you watched it.
Hey Brandon! I wanted to let you know (if you’re not already aware) that Edgar Wrights student film “Dead Wright” is a great movie he made when he was 18. It’s about 40 minutes long and is freely available on CZcams. Just search up the title and you should find it easily. I think it would make an awesome reaction video! 😃👍
This is my favorite one of the bunch. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are both great
Your vids always make my day bro!
I just love your reviews\ viewings! Your voice is so calming!
Should watch the movie "Paul" it stars Simon Pegg Nick Frost and Seth Rogan
also Jason Bateman, hilarious Kristen Wiig and the legend: Sigourney Weaver.
I just wrote the same thing...the more the better
Paul is good too
it's a movie for geeks. Or is it nerds... Never been able to do the difference. Anyway, i squeed a bit at almost the end.
your reactions make me very happy. seeing you enjoy watching these films is like seeing my three grown children watch films unfamiliar to them. blessings.
I have lived in London for 5 years and visited the areas around. I love that the movie is giving "explanation" on why all the pubs are becoming generic, with the same food menu not cooked on site anymore, but distributed by some generic big food industry brand. Same with the beer in fact. All in all very sad, I would try to avoid these generic "pubs" by all means.
Just noticed the girl next to Peg at the support group meeting was the grocery store girl who gets pushed onto the metal pipe in Shaun's backyard in Shaun of the Dead!
The voice of the light at the end is the actor who played Philip in Shaun of the Dead
Love the channel! I just discovered it recently and am currently watching you go through the Breaking Bad series. I got depressed when CZcams went down earlier today because I was in the middle of that playlist lol! Keep up the good work!
When I watch these reactions it's like I'm rewatching the film all over again. Thanks 😊
The arm grabbing Gary's face at 13:35 reminds me of the first episode of series one of Doctor Who when an Auton's arm does the same thing to Rose Tyler.
Brandon, videos highlight of my week man
Yes Paul. Simon and Nick together with great cast
I remember first watching it in theaters, and it hit close to home with the Gary King (Simon Pegg) character. A man struggling with depression and feeling like he peaked early in life and has nothing to live for, or to look forward to. The lack of a love life, no job, etc. I was able to really empathize with that character on such a level it left me feeling depressed at the end.
The only other film character that I related to so closely that I was left feeling super depressed after was Seymour Parish (Robin Williams) in the film "One Hour Photo." The loneliness and isolation he portrayed was stunning. The way the character blended into the background and practically disappeared when he wasn't making himself noticed just felt so relatable to me.
If you haven't seen it, or reacted to it you should do One Hour Photo. Williams' acting is amazing in it.
Someone mentioned Spaced. You have to watch that and you will see how it mirrors these stylized movies and how they even rehashed scenes. You will also recognize actors like the lady when they first come to town, she's Marsha the landlady from Spaced.
Love the content mate, keep it up
Bro one of my favorite films, thanks for the content!!! keep it up homeboy!
Fun fact (source: screening of the film with Wright, Pegg, and Frost Q&A :D): for the bathroom fight scene, they wanted the actual fight (minus robot effects) to be real as possible, including having the actors playing the teens actually be teens. Meaning they needed to track down 5 extremely skilled combat performers who were also high school age, which is a tall order! They ended up casting via gymnasts, circuses and other performing companies; I believe all 5 of the boys in that scene were originally acrobats and had little or no acting experience before this film. That's how legit they wanted these robot fights to be!
The only movie I ever saw at the Cinema where I was the only person there. Great Times!
I'm so happy you watched this, also I subbed
The Worlds End Pub (the actual final pub they used) is 5 minutes drive from my house
Love your reviews mate 👍
Perfect ending to the trilogy - awesome reaction as usual bro'!
I love his use of out of focus lights with the blank's faces and something like the light's in Scott Pilgrim being heart shaped.
Dude i love ur content so much! thank you!
Just watched this last night, great timing!
Sorry if someone has already mentioned this - I scrolled a bit and didn't notice it. But this film was extremely personal to Simon Pegg. During the movie you bring up alcoholism, and in reality it was Pegg who was battling alcoholism in his life (he's gone over this in interviews, they're well worth seeking out), and he was actually sober by the time this movie was written/filmed. This movie is basically about his battle with alcoholism, with this pub crawl essentially being his addiction, and his refusal to quit it even though it's putting the people he cares about in danger.
The woman sitting next to Gary in the therapy session was Mary, the zombie Shaun and Ed took out in "Shaun Of The Dead".
The image of "The King's Head" was Simon Pegg, made to look like a 18th century king. Fittingly, his last name in the movie was King.
My lifes complete , the one movie I've been waiting for you to watch 😂 "what's the Shakespeare play ?" , "A winters tale ?" " yeah whats it called ?" ... " A winter's tale "
The choreography of this one (and Kingsman too) is made by the extraordinary Brad Allan, you can see his combat skills in Gorgeous, he's the little guy who fights Jackie Chan twice in this movie (in the middle and at the end)...
You are the only reactor I actually like, great insights and commentary! keep it up mate
The woman next to Peg in the support group played "Mary" the zombie in Shaun's garden.
Gary: I just want to have fun.
Andy: We live. In a society.
The guy that plays Rev Green is Tyres in their first outing (Spaced tv show)
The way Simon Pegg was dressed at the end of the film makes me confident that he could play a decent Roland Deschaine in a Dark Tower movie.
You should watch BBC Sherlock. First season only had 3 episodes. If you like British Dramedy, you should check it out.
One of my absolute favorites!
all the seasons have 3 episodes
This film deserves multiple viewings to catch every little detail that you miss the first time through.
a lot of the cast members specially those that appear across all the films were actually part of a comedy group, I think even from college, that has done a lot of work and tv shows together which is why pegg and frost had them in all the movies >
One day this movie will be taught in film classes just for its use of foreshadowing. On subsequent rewatches you'll notice more details and not a word is waste in the dialogue.
Anyone notice the woman sitting next to Gary in the support group scene was the same actress that played Mary the zombie in the garden in Shaun of the Dead
Funny story: I actually watched this move with someone a while back. "Have you ever seen it before?" "Yeah, it's about these five guys who go on a pub crawl and catch up on their lives." Me, "......" Bathroom fight scene: "What movie did I think this was!? What movie did I watch before!? Did I fall asleep the last time!?" :-D
Gotta watch Paul!
Have you seen The Big Lebowski?? I promise you won’t regret watching it. Really enjoying all the awesome work you do Brandon, you rock!
final gag from the film, the Housemartins 'Happy Hour' as credit music
The clever thing about this film is the whole film is laid out at the start, it just gives a brief overview of it all. Also most Americans won't know this but The World's End is a common name for a Pub in the UK.
It's worth mentioning, if no one else has, that the fight choreography was done by one of the guys who did the fights for The matrix movies.
in the beginning, in the support group. woman on shaun's left. that's Mary from that scene in Shaun of the Dead in shauns back garden.
Aw man this movie's so good! I remember I was a huge fan of the other two movies and bought the dvd for this one without knowing anything. I still remember how shocked I was after the plot twist
That's David Bradley. He played the new William Hartnell's first doctor
I love how the photo shown at “The King’s Head” is just Simon Pegg in a wig. Man I love this movie
The woman next to Simon Pegg at the support group is the first zombie they see in Shaun of the Dead, the woman in the backyard that falls on the pole.
Mentions of like 8:20 "they've all just been franchised, there's no nuance" and 13:25 "things seemed a bit unnatural earlier" got me like yeah! Those are big themes fr the film, the impersonal cookie cutter changes and feeling that smth is eerie about a place that used to be familiar, which you used to fit into in a happier past but can't anymore no matter how you try... Btw I'm /so/ pleased to hear you reference Kingsman, it makes perfect sense bc they actually used the same stunt choreographer! Brad Allan's really got this feel fr mixed martial arts as well as superb creativity re: environmental prop use i think, those fighting sequences are a joy to watch. Aaaa i just love this movie a lot and i love the elements you picked up on.
Since you've seen this, have you and will you react to the movie Paul?
