Just wanted to say it’s so cool that you are picking up ~25% of the total audience watching these release videos. That’s a cool benchmark for where your channel has reached, and a testament to the value you add to the community.
I've been thrilled at the response to these!
@@stecon5 I wonder if he actually is picking up 25%. I watch both and it makes me wonder how many more people there are like me.
@@SamanthaVimes177 I only watch Chris' walkthrough
I have followed some of the playtest but lost interest halfway through it. I am not as such interested in Todd and Jeremy's advertising talk. But keen on hearing Chris' take on the new stuff. I am pretty sure I am not going to play DnD 2024. But I am interested in hearing Chris' analysis of the content.
@@Magnushamann I count as a double count there, but not with all of the videos. It depends on if I catch the day's video. I'm guessing it's a small percentage.
So they removed the flexibility of changing a spell per level of the expanded list... maybe it is for the best...
I was shocked at how much they glossed over! Still think sorcs are my new favorite full caster though :)
Fancy seeing you here! Excited to see the next collab video you two are cooking up 👀
Ditto! The Sorcerer is definitely one of my new favorites
So sorcerer gets to cast these higher level spells without concentration, and it's OK, but God forbid the Ranger cast their level 1 Hunter's Mark without concentration. THAT WOULD BREAK THE GAME!
Very strange
Yeah, that is the dumbest bs. And gets homebrewed at any game I run.
Came here to say the same thing
In my homebrew it was favored foe that lost the concentration requisite, i also increased the number of daily uses by making it a short rest ability
Literally just move concentrationless HM to a level 5 feature or something and the dip problem is solved.
All the transformation ones going off at once, you become a one eyed, one horned, flying purple potted plant
Better that than a one-eyed, one-horned, flying purple rock and roll star?
"Not again..."
Sure looks strange to me.
😆@@TreantmonksTemple
@@brianj.841 that's reserved for the bard/sorcerer multiclass
Sorcorer and Wizard now stand apart mechanically as much as they do thematically. Such good changes.
They did good work to set sorcerers apart from wizards in the UA, even when they both shared the same spell list.
Now that the spell lists are seperate again, it just cements what makes them different even more
Apparently there's going to be a video/videos on Warlock Invocations and Sorcerer Metamagic, so hopefully we get more detail then
I hadn't heard, that's great news!
@@TreantmonksTemple Someone said that Todd mentioned in in the live chat of today's video. Admittedly this is hearsay so take it with a grain of salt, but I hope it's true.
@@marimbaguy715 I hope it's true, too. Jeremy teased that all the metamagics got reworked, but didn't give examples. I predict the Careful spell metamagic now allows for 0 damage on succesful saves. I wonder if they kept the playtest version of Twinned spell.
Earlier I watched the original video on accident and was like "man I expected Chris to have more to say but he's being super quiet" only to realize after the video was already over what was happening
That sounds like a wake and bake story if I ever heard one
OOOOOH YES! So excited about this vid!
Yeah, Jeremy gives wordy but vague presentations. I can't wait for Chris to release the floodgates and put meat onto the patchwork skeletons they've been sharing.
The could have titled this video NEW DRACONIC AND WILD MAGIC SUBCLASSES
@@TreantmonksTemple EXACTLY! But we didn’t really even get the specifics for them!
Will the shadow sorcerer be back?@@TreantmonksTemple
@@2099Spartan Not in the 2024 PHB, no. It will almost certainly come back in a later source book. Until then, you can ask your DM to let you use the old version, since supposedly that works, we will see.
I imagine myself as Palpatine screaming “Unlimited power!” as I unleash innate sorcery and arcane apotheosis to destroy my foes! 😂😈
Officially my new favorite Full Caster. Innate Sorcery was genuinely one of my favorite new features in the playtest.
@@malmasterson3890 What is innate sorcery? I have SPELL RAGE!
I feel like it should improve at later levels like giving +2 to DC for spells or something
@@kongoaurius I mean, in comparison to the way Rage scales it would be severely broken. A +1 to your spell save DC is infinitely better than a +1 damage to your attacks. I think that the features you get later that add on to Innate Sorcery is more than enough. A Sorcerer will always appreciate an extra +1 to DC & Adv on atk no matter the level.
@@kongoaurius sorcerer can get to 30dc with disadv on saves
Advantage on spell attacks after a bonus action makes me think Bugbear Sorcerer for a nice Scorching Ray nova. Get Alert from a background, and take Fighter 2 at some point for Action Surge. Transmute spell to avoid Fire resistance. Worked well on Scribes Wizard, and would be even better with advantage to attacks.
These reaction videos are exactly what I would have asked for if I had the option to custom create how these reveals were presented. Thanks for everything you do for the community Chris!
Thank you!
It's not just Tides of Chaos: Wild Magic Surge itself says the DM "can" ask you to roll for Wild Magic, so you can technically never use any of the subclass features other than Tides of Chaos 1/day and Spell Bombardment.
As a DM, my call previously was if you use Tides, on a future spell cast, roll a die - evens surge, odds no surge. Balanced out for the situations in which folks would just spam the advantage every turn on things like chromatic orb, without making it so that no wild magic ever happened, either.
I think I would make them roll every time they used a spell slot for a surge and if they roll the spell slot level or lower it's a surge.
As a player, if I'm playing a wild magic sorcerer, I am doing it because I want to roll on that table.
I understand mechanically it's an important feature, but I typically forget Tides of Chaos exists.
Me all reveal season: If they keep spell rage the same my first character is a wildmagic sorcerer
Me after this reveal: Yup
I know exactly what they didn't talk about that you can't say right now. Got to be that they removed the ability to change out spells on your subclass spell list because that would be a significant nerf. I mean that's the reason why clockwork soul is so powerful it's the ability to remove some of the less desirable spells and include the better ones like shield and counterspell, etc.
That's my guess too
I assume the same. That is an over-tuning of extended spell lists that they most likely don't want to keep now that they give it to all sorcerer subclasses going forward.
Tracking an enemy and getting an extra clickety clack: must use concentration.
A fucking dragon: no concentration needed.
Ok wizards of the coast. Ok
Thank you for all the hard work on this, Chris. It’s so helpful to get your commentary and the class reveals all in one place. Plus you drop these videos so fast!
I know its a long shot, but I really want the Sorcerous Burst cantrip that explodes on max dice to scale by 2d4.
It would put it, at base, an edge stronger than a control attack cantrip and when exploding a little ahead of damage cantrips like Fire Bolt.
Plus, d4 being the smallest die means your more likely to do the fun thing!
Maybe if I don't like what they landed on I'll homebrew it 😆
Draconic was "such a beloved subclass" in 2014 because wildmagic sucked so hard and there was no other option.
Wild Magic is great! But I can see it's a bit "out there" and not for every table.
@@iolair1973 wild magic is awful.
Okay, Draconic Sorcerer now compete with other Sorcerer subclasses and that's cool, BUT what I really want to know is if they can compete with Evocation Wizard at being a blaster because man, i've played both subclass and I reallly couldn't make a single argument to go Draconic Sorcerer instead of Evocation (and also compete at being a dragon, the first time I played a campaing to level 20 we had the biggest bruh moment ever at our table when the Divination Wizard could turn into a Adult Gold Dragon but the Draconic Sorcerer couldn't)
Storm/divine soul. Two that needed updates the most to match up with current standards vs aberrant mind and clockwork soul with very little changes and easy to port over already.
Guess I’ll just tempestuous magic myself out of here.
That said. Storm/weather stuff is so missing from this book that I feel like a storm based book is in the works. But with celestial warlock I thought divine soul would have been a nice tag along buddy
I feel like Circle of the Sea druids have eaten up Storm Sorcerer.
@@TreantmonksTempleI certainly hope not. thematically my favourite subclass.😢
I'm happy to hear you say that the gap between strongest and weakest (casters and martials) has been noticeably narrowed. It feels that way on the outside looking in, and I'm glad to hear you say it.
It's also good to hear that Sorcerers and Warlocks seem so evenly balanced between themselves. I'm a Wizard player (who also enjoys Sorcerers), but like you I've long wanted to see the gap narrowed.
I'm eager to read the spells. They gave us nothing on that front. I can't wait to see the details and your opinions on spells and spellcasting in August!
Speaking about playtests, I quite enjoyed seeing Knotkwightrite the Wild Magic Sorcerer standing in lava on purpose to show off his fire immunity, then blasting himself with a fireball on top of that while his epic theme song played in the background.
So glad they eased up the Wild Surge table... I could never play the 2014 version knowing I might TPK my party trying to cast Mage Armor.
How all of these changes will affect D&DBeyond is the elephant in the room. Considering they never got the base Sorcerer to work correctly within D&DB, for those that had access to spells they could change out, I have a concern for how all of these new options are going to function.
I liked the spells of Aberrant Sorcerer, I just wish the lore was more open to Psionic themes instead of creepy, slimy Cthulhu magic
Metamagic doesn't work on Foundry (or at least the build my DM usages)
It's really odd that they never implemented it for sorcerers.
Because it's something that took me an hour to do and make it work using their subclass builder. And they do things beyond what the builder can do all the time
I think Chris hinting that Aberrant and Clockwork were nerfed is exactly related to this feature. I think that the ability to swap spells out from your subclass spell list got removed entirely. Which, I mean yeah, I get. Was a lot for new players to understand (even if it was so fun to do for us who already understood).
Thanks Treantmonk, just finished listening to the monk video so now I'll get onto this one! Appreciate your honest reviews and insights like always ❤
I can’t wait for Chris’ assessment of the wild magic table
Other classes: look everyone, we are trying to balance the classes
Sorcerer first feature: Haha no we are not
Love the videos Chris!! I CANNOT WAIT for the detailed videos coming in August!
I've watched several of these videos and this time I've turned Todd's verbal contributions into a drinking game: every time he gives a one word filler response ("yeah, right, mhmm, perfect") I take a drink. I'm already buzzed and ain't even at the subclasses yet🎉
This is so hilariously true
Sorcerer becomes a very interesting 1 level dip for Bards who want to deal some melee damage like Valor Bard. Advantage Booming Blade & GFB (or True Strike if those are not printed) are a hugely significant DPR boost. Fingers crossed that subclass gets some love because its UA was quite underwhelming...
Something else to point out. With the new changes to Heroic Inspiration, you can now also use it to rereoll a bad effect on the Wild Magic table.
The ability I am most curious about though is the new ability to recover sorcery points. If it is simply what was shown in the playtest it's woefully insufficient.
Love to see this channel getting a bump. This is easily the most underrated D&D channel on CZcams
A thought occurred to me while watching this. A part of me was thinking that the order of class reveals was a bit weird, since I don't see any real pattern. It's not alphabetically, or by class type, or anything I could really pick out.
Then I started to think about the community's reception, and I think they are doing a Hype Sandwich. Basically open with classes that you know will be received well, close with classes that you know will be received well, and sandwich the controversial changes in the middle. I saw a bunch of positive reception at the start, a lot of dissatisfaction with specifically Paladin and Ranger, and am starting to see the positivity return this week.
If so, it's a pretty savvy marketing move. Start off strong so you don't immediately sour first impressions and wrap up strong to end with some hype, and the less popular stuff in the middle won't ever be too fresh in people's minds.
I am so excited to play the 2024 version! I love these reaction videos too, I probably wouldn’t even watch these videos if Chris didn’t comment on them!As a casual player, I hope D&D gets super popular again!
Looks great! So happy about always prepared extended spell lists for every subclass (except Wild Magic, it would be too reliable of course)
I think it can be even more reliable if you are human since they get inspiration for free and now you could technically use it to reroll a surge
I've been more excited for this one than any of the others. Thanks for your hard work, Chris! It's been great to hear your reactions to these videos.
Signature spell with no concentration, what an idea, I bet they won’t leave out a glaring exception to that
I'm guessing you mean Hunter's Mark for the Ranger, and I agree 100%.
Sorcerer was my first ever DnD character. Seems like he may have a triumphant return!
I've only seen wild magic in play in one campaign, and my DM was great at leaning into the subclass. He was always on board with the player utilizing the features and even included items, plot points, and other scenarios where it really made a difference.
Can’t wait for your new spell ranking tiers when the embargo is lifted!
Isn't it wild that the channel Dingo Doodles became popular thanks a player rolling on the wild magic table? Life really can be unpredictable like that sometimes 😂
My favorite class! Thank you for covering this with you most valuable insight.
Chris. I think I speak for everyone here in the comment section: We need the wild magic sorcerer table as soon as you are free to reveal it.
Here early!!!!! Don’t think we’ll get much here. Hoping we do, especially hearing the beginning of your video! Thanks for your hard work like always!!
Edit: judging purely off your reaction here. I’m afraid (for clockwork and Abberant) that you won’t be able to change spells off the free spell list that they get. Just my guess here but judging off facial expression and trying your most not to say anything but still trying to say something that would be my guess for the adjustment.
Edit: now that the sorcerer has dropped on beyond sad to confirm that I was correct.
Yea, it's a very significant power nerf, but I think it's needed. It was already stronger than most wizards because you could have so many extra juicy powerful spells, I would put it in the top 5 subclasses in the game. With the large amount of buffs the class just got, even with the probable nerfs to the broken metamagic options, it would be way too strong and would easily overshadow the rest of the party.
This is exactly my thought when I got to that part. If that is the case I'm sticking with old version, because this change will suck tremendously
My dm recently suggested your content to me and I gotta say thanks for the uploads, this series is super informative and gets me excited for my next monk lol
Really looking forward to Wild Magic. Your outro framing sorcerers, wizards, and warlocks as close in relative power level has me hyped!
I made "tank" subclass calculation for abjurer last time, but missed some point that i clarify this time. i will use average monster DPR based on Bixby book, as only closed reference to new CR power-level. For every class i calculated 3 numbers- first number is maximum extra Hit Points it grant at a time, second how much it give in total per long rest from feature alone (with 2 short rests), and third if it uses ALL spellslots included from arcane recovery to turn them into HP. For warlock it is potentially infinite, but i will take 24 combat rounds as maximum possible. And for the sorcerer i will assume that Clockwork spending all sorcery point on the ward and benefit from restoration to the maximum.
At level 3
Monster DPR: ~10
Abjurer: 9/9/29
Moon druid: 9/36/-
Fiend Warlock: 6/144/-
Clockwork Sorcerer: -
At level 6
Monster DPR: ~26
Abjurer: 16/16/60
Moon druid: 18/90/270
Fiend Warlock: 10/240/-
Clockwork Sorcerer: 22.5/63/148.5
At level 10
Monster DPR: ~36
Abjurer: 25/25/117
Moon druid: 30/150/600
Fiend Warlock: 15/360/-
Clockwork Sorcerer: 22.5/117/301.5
So Clockwork Sorcerer is also much better abjurer than abjurer. And synergize with own expanded spell list or Armor of agathist. I dont know how Abjurer was printed like that, it cant survive a single hit. Every other "tank" caster is just better. But overall Moon Druid is the best and only valuable option to actually stay in melee as a caster.
For the meme here calculation on Twilight domain with new cleric at level 6: 9.5/475/1425(it is also for whole party)... no comments
Great video. Really looking forward to your coverage for when more is revealed.
Thank you for adding some substance through analysis to these videos. Jeremy Crawford seems to have perfected the art of talking for an entire hour without actually saying anything. These reveal videos are becoming nothing but fluff. I half expect the Bard video to be an hour of talking about the artwork.
Sad to hear about the tashad subclass being reduced in power, I assume most of it comes from not being able to switch spells by school from any arcane class but it is probably now limited to the sorcerer only.
This is my prediction now we wait for august -_-
House rules introduce themselves
The main reason to the positive responses is of course your content. But I believe the fact that we can see you, adds to the succes as well. I think it brings a more complete viewing experience.
I am excited for the sorcerer changes but I feel that clockwork is a really bad fit thematically for sorcerer, and it is relatively recent anyway so doesn't need changes mechanically. I really wish that they had instead included shadow or divine soul (or both) since those will now just straight up suck until reworked.
Agreed
Im so happy summon dragon is back. Its my favorite spell for stars druids with the protected concentration.
As a draconic bloodline sorcerer (with a 3 level dip in warlock), I am loving the changes.
Back when i created my character at level 1, we were restricted to 2014 PHB subclasses. A new DM. Over time he got more comfortable with the game and opened up our options widely, but I'm pretty attached to the deaconic theme. So he honebrewed a bunch of "feats" to create bonus spells he figured were draconic themed. Fitting the aberration template, they were all within two schools of magic (transmutation and abjuration), and some are better than others.
But i could trafe spells out at level up.
The DM was suggesting we consider switching our existing characters to the 2024 versions, but was deciding if we would need to keep that homebrew bonus spells.
Im very glad to hear that draconic spells are just built in now.
Hopefully, I can trade out if i just get something that really doesn't work.
Shame about the dragon wings. Them being permanent was a big part of why they were cool imo
My go to source for information always!
Great review Chris! Thanks for what you do!
I think Sorcerer looks very good overall. I'm really happy most subclasses are getting thematic subclass spells and really hope they continue the trend when creating new subclasses in the future. I guess my only complaint is that they didn't rework Storm Sorcerer, but that's just because it's one of my favorites and it totally deserves to get Call Lightning xD
I'll also guess Twin Spell didn't return to the 2014 version considering the capstone, otherwise it'd be pretty insane.
I wanted to see shadow sorcery so I can have a shadow pup that can protect me 😊
At least Sea Druid delivers much better on the theme than Storm Sorcerer ever did.
Oh snap, are Clockwork and Aberrant not allowed to switch out their bonus spells anymore?!
That would be so sad.
Coffee and DnD with Treantmonk!
Best morning show ever!
I was hoping sorcerers would get that funky little cantrip they had in the playtest - or at least a version of it. Whomp whomp
I figured they just didn't mention it.. As soon as I saw it Sorcererous Burst became my favorite damage cantrip.. I hope to god they didn't scrap it..
@@5-Volt we’ll hope together! 🤞
That freeze-frame at 27 minutes in lol
I absolutely enjoy your channel.
Thank you!
If I was to guess the nerf to clockwork and aberrant mind it is that they removed the option to swap the spells out for other abjuration/transmutation etc spells. And you just get what is on the list. So no more Armor of Agathys on the cloackwork sorc. :(
*Tilted head nod, smile* That’s perfect.
Hey babe, wake up! A new Treantmonk reaction just dropped!
Treantmonk said that Aberrant and Clockwork got a nerf. He also said that the Draconic spell list was arguably better than Aberrant Mind's. My guess is that you can't swap out spells from their lists anymore
Looking forward to August 1st!
My sorcerers are all superheroes, specifically The X-Men. Happy he mentioned it while distinguishing RP between casters. Excited to see the changes to Clockwork and Aberrant. 🤓
Movement speeds are always important if you have the tactical skill to use it, but reliably always on flight even if slow is great as well. I'd call that a wash in power myself, but I'd rather have always on flight in most cases here - it just fits the theme and flavour so much better IMO.
Ahh yes, the real video I was waiting for today.
oh nooooo. my favorite was the clockwork soul...... 😮💨 great work Treantmonk!
"So Abberant Sorcery and Clockwork Sorcery were both so *beloved* and so *solid* that they have made the migration _intact."_
"The core functionality, the things you love, are still there."
😂 so that was a lieeee
I can't wait for your analysis on which class is "objectively" the most powerful after you're able to reveal everything in August! Thanks for continuing to be the best source of D&D information
I get the feeling that spell swapping in Aberrant and Clockwork are gone which makes since and puts them more in line with other classes with extra preparations like Cleric and now Warlock
Thanks so much for making these videos Chris they have been giving me something to look forward to throughout the week!!!
I can’t wait to see everything you reveal in August
Excited about the wild magic changes. It was incredibly fun if you had DM buy in. I ran a Life Cleric 1/Wild Sorcerer X build that was the ultimate support with Twin Metamagic, Boosted Healing, etc. It was amazing because I was the best person for getting the party out of OR into trouble. Good times.
I just hope that turning into a potted plant is still number 42 on the table.
Chris in the house dropping facts and coffee like a mad man! 🎉
I hope they kept the bonus to charisma checks with dragon NPCs, I’m tired of all the features being combat focused. It’s nice to have a social feature that fits the subclass
great video love these reaction videos cant wait for the bard best wishes
I *think* I know what the "objective power reduction" for Clockwork and Aberrant Mind is... And I'm glad!
Thanks again for doing these!
I hope it's removing the ability to exchange spells on the extended spell list. I love extended spell lists due to the challenge of finding use for spells that I wouldn't normally prepare. They're what ensure that subclasses provide different experiences than just playing another arcane spellcaster with the same set of top tier spells that you always pick.
@@SortKaffe yeah, that's my guess/hope as well. The way Clerics do Domain spells was always good. Just give that to Sorcerers (and Warlocks).
I feel like the Tasha sorcerers weren’t beloved for their flavor but for power level, most notably their extended spell options
To me it would have been cool if they'd made Sorcerer a Constitution caster. That fit nicely with the "innate caster" thing.
Yeaaaaah!! Thanks Chris 🎉
the sorcerer got a lot of love in this playtest im really looking forward to what made it through
Definitely going Wild Magic for my first PC. LOVE the insanity that can ensue.
Will be fun (during August?) to learn your thoughts about the comparisons of the spellcasters
As long as Tasha's mind whip is still in the book I am happy to play aberrant mind
Really hope an article comes up about this, they left a lot out just from the play test alone
The wild magic sounds so cool now! Did get urge to play one…
Wow. Sorcerers got some seriously cool new features. Sure would be nice if they'd spent this kind of time on the Ranger.
Flight is a huge advantage. As long as it’s a decent duration and doesn’t require concentration I am ok with it
Yeah, if you have to concentrate you might as well just cast fly.
Really surprised they revealed as little as they did. I'd have thought they atleast would go over some meta magic option.
Still really excitted for it, sorcerer has always been my favorite and i'm loving what i'm hearing of the changes
a minute ago! i finally caught it right away.
The fact that they said so little has me even more hyped for the release!
So, the Dnd article on the Sorcerer just came out, and yep there were changes. I don't like the nerfs to the Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul, not being able to switch out the initial spell list incantations is a large blow though I understand the reasons for the change. Meta magic is better (mostly), and there was no mention of the two new spells exclusive to the class - Sorcerous Burst, and Arcane Eruption hopefully they are still available. I encourage everyone interested to go check out the article. Take care all.
I came back to say the same, and yeah it's unfortunate but not unexpected. Given where they went with the Bard & Magic Initiate, it makes sense that this was something they wanted to enforce wholesale whilst keeping features like this uniform so there's no confusion. If Arcane Eruption is in the book then it was worth it imo.😊
Feels to me like we got almost no new information - guess we'll have to wait for you to drop your vid's. Sorcerer first please :)
Really glad the redid the wild surge table. I was worried that they were gonna just copy-paste it from the 2014 like they implied in the UA.
Really interested for this one. I thought the playtest was fascinating but not sure where they were actually going to go with it
just watched the official sorcerer video now here to see what additional information and thoughts you have to add and just got taken out by the line '2014 sorcerers had a reputation of being weak.' HUH??? THEY WERE??? im playing a 2014 sorcerer at the minute and never got that feeling at all. thats crazy to me, but i guess i've never played with people who optimise.
thank you for making these breakdowns!
