We, like most, started out as part time RVers. For 13 years we spent our entire 2-3-week vacation (split up as they wouldn't let me take more than a week at a time) camping in our Aliner hard sided pop-up pulled by a little Chevy Cobalt SS. We never camped on weekends as I never got a weekend day off, and was forced to work 6-7 days a week, sometimes not seeing home for a month at a time. Needless to say, we were really looking forward to retirement. Five years ago, I retired at 62. We purchased a 1999 National Tropical Class A MH, sold everything and went FT with our little Cobalt in tow. It was the best decision we ever made.
We discovered we'd rather boondock, living virtually for free in the wilderness than live in expensive RV parks, wedged into small campsites with fellow campers all lined up like sardines in a can. We boondocked for 10 months straight last year with 620 watts of solar and a 560ah battery. However, we FTed for 3 years with only a pair of flooded lead acid golf cart batteries. You make do with what you've got till you can afford to do better.
We've since done much better, adding another 4,400 watts of solar and a 16.3Kwh 48v battery bank making us electrically independent. We can now live off-grid just like we are plugged into a campground power pole running our mini split A/C or heat 24/7 if needed. We live this lifestyle on our Social Security and a couple of small pensions, so saving money by boondocking lets us do the tourist thing, seeing the USA (towing our Chevrolet), getting to see all the great natural beauty this country has to offer without feeling deprived due to budget constraints. It's nice being debt free empty nesters and finally having the time to enjoy our newfound freedom. I think we're well above average in this regard. We're free-range humans. Why be average?

We are now 11 months into our full time adventure. What has worked for us is staying in one place for a while, work camping, then moving on. We have work camped, in Pa., FL., and starting next week in GA. for 3 months. We feel that this method allows us to explore an area thoroughly, eat well and continue on. Is that average? Who knows. So far, it's worked for us. Till Cocktails...... Be safe and Be Well.

Love your channel. Family of 5 here, 12 -19 for kids ages, we are destination travelers. We pick our spot, either the mountains, beach, or boys trip. The only time we make over night stops on a trip is if it is long distance. From NC to NY we made a stop along the coast to enjoy 2 nights. on the way back, we stopped in the mountains for a couple nights. When we went from NC to Key Largo, we stopped on the way to sleep in Jekyll Island but stayed 2 nights on the way back to enjoy the area. Otherwise, our destination is typically 3.5 to 7 hours away. We typically have 9-12 trips per year with one long stay of 7-10 days, otherwise our stays are 3-6 nights.

We have been retired now for over 5 years each, bought new B van in 2020, since we live in Florida ( doesn’t everyone from NY) it’s easy to go and travel around this huge state and enjoy all it’s beauty. Ones the spring we usually head north for some “grand kids time” then around late July we head out in any direction until late September or October. This year it off to the Tetons, Yellowstone, Rushmore and a big maybe for Glacier before heading south then east for home.growing tired of the van so maybe an upgrade to a mid sized “C” is in future. Keep on moving around you guys!!

Traveling in our small class C I can see how you may want to upgrade from your class B. On the other hand your class B must be great to drive from place to place. We just left Jackson WY. Beautiful area just a little cold right now. Your are going to have an Amazing summer traveling to all those places. Glacier is my “Katrina” favorite. Safe travels and enjoy your summer!😊

    My thoughts are;
    You are exceptional RV's
You are full time, have a successful CZcams site with regular content updates.
You have taken the plunge to adventure outside of the regular RV sites with hookups.
    We are average RV's
I started long ago and was always happy to just be outside.
Under the stars, to tents to back of the truck to DIY cargo trailer to used RV and then on to the comfy 5th wheel RV.
This is new to the wife, so we have started slow, with the purchase of a used RV in 2022.
We mostly go to sites with at least electric and water hook-ups, if not full hook-ups. So far all only in Texas, it's a big state.
I am able to dine on exceptional meals daily. Father-in-law as a master chef and instructor and taught the wife everything she knows.
We are at the point where we are the point where we are planning more extended trips, including out of state.
I can work from anywhere, so it is not an issue for me. The wife still has to go in, so trips revolve around her vacation time, 4 weeks per year.
We make an effort to be out at least once per month. And at least 1 high end RV resort per year.
Once she is retired, the plan is to be gone for a month or more at a time. From there we will see where life takes us.

We are parttime campers. We will take a trip, deciding a couple places we want to go, usually national park and/or State Park and plan to stay at least a week in each place then return home. Last year we took a trip from Oregon to Tennessee, 4 months long, and will not do it again as it's not for me, and VERY expensive.

We completely understand not wanting to go on such long trips. When friends tell us we must be saving so much money we kinda giggle. It’s a job on its own just trying to stay on budget. Glad to hear you’re still traveling and enjoying yourselves whenever you can. Stay safe and have a wonderful summer.😊

We take 3 weeks a year and travel. This year we are 3 weeks in Myrtle Beach with our camper.
We spend a week every year in our camper at Cedar point.
Then we take extra days for Memorial Day and 4rh of July in our camper. Then we are mostly staying close to home weekend warriors even in the Michigan winters (skiing a few weekends a year)
Everyone needs to stay at one location for 2 weeks it’s so much more relaxing. We used to do a week here and week there but during covid we ended up at Myrtle Beach for the first time and spend 3 weeks and it changed our lives. Now our main vacation is between 2.5 to 3 weeks. We are still a part time. We only plan to take one long trip a year for a while till my wife is fully retired. I would say we are local escape campers. We travel 1 to 3 hour to a state park on Sunday and come home Wednesday so 3 nights away. Every other week april till end of October. We like to get away hike and cook over campfires. Taking full advantage of the 1/2 price state park camo grounds offers for seniors.

We think the biggest question is what is considered full time. Some people say you have to live and travel in it with no going to a house or anything all year long but a lot of people consider what the insurance companies call full time which is a minimum of 6 months.it is like the propane debate.

    • @oureverydaygetaway

So I’ve been RVing for a couple of years now. I’m on my third RV (can’t seem to pick a size to stay with). I was working 5-6 days per week and would pay a lot to run away for a weekend here and there. Then I got a Thousand Trail’s membership this January. It’s just the basic package with the encore addition. Since January I’ve done a ton of camping with my TT membership and take a lot more time off of work. I stay within a close radius of my home but I’m having a ball! I am a solo female only because my husband doesn’t want to go…. I’d love it if he did. So…long story short, i feel I’m an average RVer having an above average time!

The word "average" covers a lot of ground. I don't often pay close attention, but I think you were referring to weekends versus long, multi-week trips. We're fairly new to this, and both work full time, so probably right with you in the "below average" category. We quickly found out travel days don't count, so at the moment we're mainly setting up 4 day weekends somewhere in a 500 or so mile radius from home. So far our trips tend toward 4-8 weeks apart. Mostly lower cost state parks and small mom-n-pop parks, but willing to visit a more spendy location with a purpose. Either a meetup or some attraction we want to visit.

Not sure which category we are. Living in Mississippi, our weather is usually good from March until Early December. So we only put the camper away for 2-3 months max. During camping season we camp long weekends every other week and take 2-3 longer trips during the year. Usually a week in the summer and a week around Thanksgiving. This year we are going to the Keys for 9 days. Other than that we are staying within 2-3 hour drive from home. So what category are we??

I not sure what average would be but we may be above average for parttime RVing. Our parttime in a year is usually about 3-4 weekends with family and friends, 4 to 5 local trips of about 3-5 days each, 1 or 2 week long trips maybe 200-500 miles, and one 5-9 week trip covering thousands of miles. I usually don't get out from January and February but I use that time to do upgrades and fixes. One year, I want to do a FL / Southwest trip during the winter. CZcamsrs and Facebook have made it possible. You guys give us the confidence to get out there. If it weren't for content from CZcams we would probably only car camp doing local trips with only 1 or 2 long trips (200-500 miles). We have seen and experienced so much more since we started RVing in 2019. Thank you. ❤

I can't believe how many people have not keyed in on Han's dice that he had hung in the Falcon. I won't turn this into a nerd fest dissertation over the gold dice, but we can be friends... I will say, our other summer obsession is showing our 57 Chevy Bel Air that we built for our dad, it does have the obligatory fuzzy dice hanging from the mirror. You can't go wrong with dice on the mirror! Fuzzy or gold! ;-)
I'm a part timer but living here in Alaska, our season is too short to be anything else unless you Snowbird and head out and down south for the winter. This summer through a business decision from my former employer of many years, I have the luxury to use my RV more than I normally would. I just put the lithium batteries back in for the summer today and turned back on the solar. Tomorrow flush the tanks and lines to clear out the antifreeze and put the keurig back in and do a little spring cleaning.
But am i an Average or below / above? I had to think about this one. To Alaska standards for local RVers, I'm above average or so I feel. I have no illusions that I have moved up to glamping and am quite comfortable in my rig with all the upgrades I have done. The affore mentioned solar and lithium was a total game changer. The onboard cellular network (just can't justify Star Link), 3000 watt inverter that can run everything, suspension upgrades to the trailer, the 12 volt pellet smoker and more. Locals don't usually go as far as I have. I try to get out and enjoy our short summers, both at the car shows and the campgrounds. When the weather is nice, Alaska can be spectacular. This is my 56'th summer starting up in Alaska. Its my point of origin and hopefully my destination. Though as I get older, I look forward to finding a way to retire and Snowbird with a RV to see America. Now am I an average RV'er down in the lower 48? Most all CZcams content on the RV lifestyle that I have watched says I'm aspiring with a good toe hold. I have the desire, better than factory hardware, I just need to find that friendly slot machine in Vegas to finance a comfortable full time RV retirement. But until then, weekend warrior it is with a comfortable glamper.
Things are thawing out and warming up in Anchorage. Not sure what your Itinerary for your drive up is, but its getting warmer. Overnights are finally above freezing, a couple more weeks and we should be in the 40's at night. Hopefully we have a much dryer summer than the last two for your adventure. I'm out camping rain or shine, but the shine is much more appreciated. The last two summers were fish chokers. So far this spring has been mostly sunny. Fingers crossed that we have more sun than rain!

As new RVers, we purchased our travel trailer 11 months ago. We were able to go about 12 long weekends, 2 week long trips - all of these were within an 8 hour driving radius. We also took the entire month of Oct to explore the NE. We did have to work some from the road. So I don't know, I felt when compared to my friends and family we were super blessed 'above average' as we traveled more in 11 months than many of them have had the opportunity to do in many years!

Thanks, interesting topic... We are similar to you. I don't consider y'all full timers. Even if you don't own a home, you definitely have a "homebase" and come off the road for extended periods. We travel 75-80% of the year even though we still own a home. Our year typically includes a 5-6 month excursion trip with average stays of a week (not including overnight stops); as well as 2-4 destination trips of 4-6 week durations. The other 20-25% of the year is family and personal business time. Prefered campgrounds are NPS, NFS, CoE, BLM, State Parks, Regional\County\City parks, NGO\Utility Company parks and campgrounds. Last choice (under 20%) are commercial campgrounds. We have done yearly TT Camping Pass a couple times when the excursion trip was to TT prevelant areas and cost effective. Mixing in short boondocking stays and using NP Lifetime Senior discount as well as discounts in some State's Parks, our average nightly is under $30. I consider almost all (with a few exceptions) of our campground selections to have been above average to excellent. This nightly average can easily be reduced.
