- Erwin Rommel, one of five children of an artillery lieutenant, was born on 15 November 1891 in Württemberg, then part of the German Empire. In 1910, at the age of 18, Rommel joined the German army and by the outbreak of the First World War, which began on 28 July 1914, he held a position of an infantry officer.
Rommel fought primarily in France and Italy. He successfully employed the tactics of penetrating enemy lines with heavy covering fire coupled with rapid advances, as well as moving forward rapidly to a flanking position to arrive at the rear of hostile positions, to achieve tactical surprise.
After striking successes at the Battle of Caporetto and in the capture of the Italian town of Longorone, Rommel was promoted to the rank of captain in January 1918.
On 11 November of the same year, the First World War ended.

Rommel was much like Canaris and the other German officers, field marshals and Generals involved with the growing German resistance weren’t loyal towards Nazism but instead to Germany and Hitler deemed it a threat.
My father served in the British Army's campaign all the way from Abyssinia to Tunisia, it left him with a lifelong dislike of camels, a love for astronomy and the ability to swear in Arabic. Desert rats might understand this.
During the North Africa campaign, Rommel had a personal driver named Hellmut von Leipzig (1921 - 2016), an officer and a leutnant in the Brandenburgers who served as his driver/chauffeur while serving in the Afrika Korps as a volunteer.
Numerous POWs from Rommel's Afrika Corps were held at Ft. Dix, NJ, where my father did his basic training in 1944. He said they were very tough and extremely loyal to Herr General Rommel.
My dad, fought against Rommel in North Africa and who was captured by the Nazis in 1944 and held until the end of the war, had a grudging respect for Rommel.
Thank You again, for having Excellent videos , Important, and Informative.
The Einsatzgruppen operated in North Africa , when Rommel was " running the show" , THAT shocked me ( I had always thought of him as a " reluctant " Nazi until I learned that )
That's what we were told in British schools.
American schools also, and the majority of historys I've read.
@@victorialamphear430to be fair it's not like Rommel wanted them there in the first place unfortunately theirs very little a man of Rommel's rank can do when whichever of the infamous death squad are sent
So were there tears shed or not then, Mr. Narrator
Left to the eye and heart of the beholder. †
It was an informative and wonderful historical coverage video about field Marshall Erwin Rommel
My father served in the English army that defeated Romel. I remember sitting with my dad during the final stage of the 1966 World Cup when he became quite emotional, despite his dementia and cheered on the boys when Hurstzy and Ballzy propelled England to the very top of the world rankings.
My opinion of Rommel always has been that he was a devoted soldier, an exemplary officer in the service of his country. He was never an ideological Nazi supporter, but of course, as a practical matter, was committed to serving his country under der Furor. He was not alone in seeing the war was already lost, nor devoted to the "final solution", but in the momentum of the time, he was faced with the inner dilemma of becoming a "traitor" to his country, or going against the grain of the evermore fanatical Hitler and the evil regime he had created.
Good evening, and again, Thank You.
Hi Renee. Thanks for being with us :)
@@WorldHistoryVideos Hello. My Absolute Favorite History Channel! You're Very Appreciated!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
he was ok with the Nazi's at the beginning of WW2...
He seemed to have no issues with them until Germany started losing the war, funny that...
@@Warriorking.1963Strange how that happens, when something starts to go bad all of a sudden this ain’t for you
Tears were 50/50 shed in a bittersweet way for General Erwin Rommel (1891 - 1944)
🫡
Tears were shed for Erwin Rommel.
"The Royal English Navy?! That's a new one to me.
Thank you World History for another educational and cultural episode. Your narrator has elegance and amazing pronunciation. 🤍
He was an officer and a gentleman. Well respected and a superb leader
Crazy how Rommel was a son of an artillery officer, he was made to be a leader
There were tears for this man
For the world’s sake, I’m thankful Hitler and Mussolini were incompetent fools. The Italian army was horrendous, and Hitler acted on his lack of patience. If both were better with battle planning, we may be under Nazi rule today.
Royal English Navy what the hell are you on about.
My hackles rose and stomach churned when I heard this, destroyed any credibility.
Rrrrromel lol u gotta love how this guy talks😂🤌🏾
He was the commander of Hitler's body guard before the war
Guard Battalion, not the SS Bodyguards. The Guard Battalion was a German Army unit.
Rommel was never a nazi , was a great general but on the wrong side he was a military man and never liked hitler but never spoke up if that would of done and good he did take his own life to save his family, thats a loyal man to me ,no matter what its easy to judge looking back we were ont there
Erwin Rommel Aka The Desert Fox
A well disciplined soldier 🤕
Even after his death Rommel's former wartime enemies would meet at his gravesite every year for some time afterwards.
He organized pearl and guns also of 20 years
His son became mayor of Stuttgart.
Soooo... some tears shed for Rommel??
This time it is up to you to decide ...
👍
RIP
Erwin Rommel
(1891-1944)
I don't know, maybe he was a German soldier first and fought for Germany regardless of the filth who ran the country. That doesn't excuse him though.
Strange as is is, there were many tears shed for this Nazi
Rommel was an aggressive, yet fair commander. I read something that was written about him. It said “as his old opponent on the battlefield I have no complaints against him. Rommel and his soldiers fought against us hard but clean.” I think that kinda says a lot about his character.
Isn't NAZI Hero and a War Criminal much the same thing?
A soldier that follows the Geneva convention and doesn't commit crimes against humanity is not a criminal.
@@steve20118 Yeah; but a soldier following the Geneva convention is hardly likely to become a Nazi hero, are they?

You could be a member of the Nazi Party and being a very couragious soldier! Michel Widmann was the Rommel of the Waffen SS and he never killed any Jews, just like Erwin...
@GhostRider92-ws8tr I never said Wehrmacht and SS were the same - I will say though, there are a lot of dumb people that watch this channel.
