I'm 51 and TERRIFIED of snakes except the hognose! But i watch snake videos to educate myself about them so i know where to avoid them, learn their habits, etc. I live in Texas so we DO have venomous snakes around, but so far around my house I've seen those small black garter snakes. I'd rather have hognose snakes because at least they don't dart around!

I’m 68 and fascinated by snakes. But like a lot of people, I’m not confident when handling them by myself. Back in the 90’s I bought a beautiful baby corn snake. Hoping I could overcome my anxiety I tried handling her. She never actually bit me but would give me a warning hiss. I kept her for 2 years but as she got bigger and bigger I got even less confident with her. I returned her to the breeder, knowing that she could be rehomed to someone who was more confident than me. Back then there was very little ready advice. If only there was a Snake discovery channel then. If I was a few years younger I would happily go out and buy a Western Hognose. I love your channel, you are such ambassadors for reptiles. 🇬🇧

Lovely snakes you have! I have 3 westerns and an eastern hognose myself. My eastern is captive bred, and actually takes f/t mice with no problems. Every now and then I have to rub a bit of toad scent on his mouse to jump-start him eating, but most days he does unscented. He's about a year old now, and eats an unscented hopper mouse every 4-5 days. I'll probably move that to once a week when he's finished growing.

Initially, I checked for the rattle of a rattle-snake, negative. It hissed and swelled its head. My first thought was 'Cobra'...in Wisconsin!?...nope. He turned over to play dead (the only time he ever did, after that he was okay with me handling him), and vomited up a toad. So, I knew what he ate! My mother let me put toads in the freezer, for winter food. I kept him a couple of years, then took him back where I found him, and let him go. The only pet reptile I ever had. I found an Eastern yesterday morning, but it's coloration on top was dark and bland. The bottom however was a brilliant rose pinkish color. The top had bands on it, but they were harder to see because of it's more UNATTRACTIVE dark olive coloration. It did literally everything you talked about, including throwing up a blood sac as it was playing dead. It hissed EXTREMELY loudly and bluffed me, before it gave up, turned belly up opened it's mouth stuck out it's tongue, and went completely motionless. I flipped him over a couple of times and lol, he kept just going belly up again. Finally I just left him alone, stood about 10 feet from him, and waited for him to do the coast is clear thing hehe. It took about 7 or 8 minutes, but he finally scampered upon his way. And yes, he bluff struck at me, I'd say about 10 or so times, before he played dead. He was freaking hilarious! And gross. He made a mess all over himself when he played dead. Still hilarious tho. And before anyone on here wants to say something negative, NO I did not hurt him, Nor would I ever do that to a snake. And the only reason I messed with him alittle, is because hognose snakes are fairly rare and knowing what I know about them, I wanted to see if it was all true. Lmao, yes...Yes it is! They are such funny little snakes! This was in Southeast Missouri bythway, about 20 minutes from the Arkansas State line, and about 20 miles from Poplar Bluff Missouri.

She is by far the coolest chic ive seen on CZcams. And so cute and down to earth. If only i can find a woman like her. Most woman i meet, freak out around retiles. I like a woman that likes reptiles because i like reptiles. Duh. I am a land surveyor and do a lot if work in the woods. I come across snakes all the time and cant resist picking them up for a closer look, even the ones that are venomous. Everyone at work alls me the snake man. My boss has told me never to bring back any more snakes to the office because of once there was an accidental release and the from desk receptionist almost had a heart attack! Lol. I have 2 hognose snakes and 3 huge blue tale skinks and a sqirrel, all from different job sites. All were babies that would have possibly died due sections of their enviroments being chopped down for developement.

They are native to southeast Wyoming and we don’t have a huge abundance of toads, they are here but you would really have to look, there are however a TON of field mice, no doubt in my mind that’s part of the reason the westerns are more inclined to eat rodents

I didn't; I actually quite like the normal morph. My friend/roommate is considering a sand boa, so maybe he'll get an interesting morph. I've been enjoying learning about snakes; my girlfriend has had a black milk snake for some time and is thinking about getting a rainbow boa.

I'm sad now. I caught an eastern H.N. yesterday and now realize I must release it because it's full grown and will probably never take a mouse for food. It is such a calm loving snake.

Please do one of these videos on garter snakes! I'm getting one or more, and I want to know everything about them! Please please please teach us how to care for and breed garters! Mine, unfortunately, have to be wild caught because there are no breeders in my area, and they are completely native here, so I want to try to breed them to give a captive bred option!

The Eastern Hognose has all but disappeared here in east TN. I haven't been able to confirm their presence, not even with road kills for about 20 years now. Sadly the last I found was a road kill about 20 yrs ago.
