- Derek & The Dominos - "Got To Get Better In A Little While" (E. Clapton)
The Johnny Cash Show, 1970.
Music-only performance that didn't make it to the initial broadcast.
Audio: Bonus track from the UMC 2011 40th Anniversary remaster of "Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs".
Saw Clapton live in the late 70’s. The Dominos stuff was always my favorite. How can a band have a loose jamming feel yet be so tight. Answer, awesome musicians.
Jimmy Gordon complimented all the musicians he played with. He was a human metronome.
Logically, the footage must have existed of this performance, along with the other track that wasn't included in the final program, "Blues Power". The spontaneous and enthusiastic response of the audience to EC's playing midway through his solo is also instructive-they couldn't wait to the end to applaud his fluid, melodic lines.
This band should've never stopped!
Time machine
Such a shame there is so little live film footage of Derek and the Dominos
They werent around very long, one album and live album and that was that. I'm sure if Eric hadnt got caught in serious heroin habit the Dominos could have been huge, by the album really hit it was all over for the Dominos. But to your comment yeah its a shame.
I thought they ended because Duane Allman died in 1971
@@hmmmmmm69 No - Duane had decided to remain with the Allman Bros. Personal problems with both Eric & Jim Gordon
@@allanbriggs807 Jim thought he was bigger than he really was.
Isn’t that true the same with the original Allman Brothers Band. Many great bands with so little video of them. Jim Gordon was blessed with incredible talent but cursed with untreated mental illness . He self medicated with drugs that didn’t treat the illness. Sad story. I guess most of the really effective medications weren’t available in the 1970’s.
Great song from one of the best bands ever assembled.
What a band. Powerful rhythm section, soulful keys and singing and simply great guitar playing.
Only thing better would sky dog playing with them
Clapton's best band.Whitlock is the key.
@@randallkennedy2066 I agree - This band was superior to D&TD .
This band is Derek and the Dominoes 🤔
On drums ladies and Gentlemen... The outstanding Jim Gordon.
Listen to some of those fills! And how he carries the melody and is ALWAYS exactly on the beat...
Legendary drummer and most tragic story what happened to him from mental instability.
I hope he's doing okay in his current circumstances.
It's a sad coda to his gifted legacy.
One of the greatest rock drummers of all time - does receive due credit (and I accept he had personal mental health issues)
@@sfeigh No he has been refused parole as he won't accept required medication..
I spent a month in the hospital and this song really helped me through
Everything Eric Clapton touches is super cool. And Derek and the Domino's is no exception
THIS is the song they should have broadcast on the Johnny Cash show!
And Blues power
Dude, it's way to long.
The best of the best riding it out……the great Slowhand !!!!
Fabulous performance, do wish they had filmed it, but only It's Too Late and the duets with Carl Perkins and Johnny made the show. You can hear Johnny saying that if the producer is OK with it, Eric has agreed to play another song for you guys. This one is pretty rocked up for Johnny's show, but it's so great, D & D for my money is the best EC ever was. Love it! ❤️
High energy, high speed, and tight, tight, tight! What n amazing performance!
Agreed, Bobby is killin those keys and background vocals
This Album… not much to say but absolute greatness. We all wish the dominos lived on longer than they did, however it’s clips like this that make them a timeless group. Recent receiver of the 40th anniversary 2-disc edition of the album and recent viewer of their time on the Johnny cash show and holy cow was it everything I asked for and more. Long live Eric, Duane, Bobby, Carl, Jim, and the rest of the dominos. One of the greatest bands to ever live
That band was tight and rockin'!
This is as good as it gets
My very first rock concert---16 years old, Derek and the Dominos---November 1970, Painters Mill Maryland. First time smoked pot too---oh boy a double dose. Very few if any, concerts after that experience ever lived up to that one and I went to many in Chicago. Maybe it was the Pot? Naw---it was the music and the Players.
I saw them with Duane Allman playing the 1st part of the show. 1st song was Layla. Plenty of pot too. in December 1970 at Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa. Great show.
Wow, I wish I could say I saw Derek & the Domino's. Incredible
I was 16. It was my 3rd concert. I saw 5Hendrix at the Baltimore Civic Center in May, 1969, my 1st concert, I was 15!,
Then I saw Spirit and Iron Butterfly in Baltimore. Then we moved to Tampa. I have seen a lot of concerts since then.
@@charlesmyers8150 my first 3 were Ozzy, Kiss & Metallica in the mid 90s when I was 15, ha! Hendrix, young Clapton and SRV would be if I could pick anyone choices.Duane would have been so great to see as well! Thanks for sharing!
My first too...Music Hall in Cincinnati, day after Thanksgiving. HS sophomore.
Juts groovin on Jim Gordon's drumming here. Just listen to the detail! Little hi-hat "slurps" and "barks" sprinkled all around. Amazing!
His drumming here is incredible. Studio-grade drumming, and his fills are super-funky on this song.
I wish Clapton had these musicians in 1974. That was the first tour I got to see him on. He had Carl Radle with him for a number of years.
70 - 71...and then 74-79
@@pabloperez4063 Thank you Pablo, after this many decades it gets a bit foggy. Carl was a great bass player.
@@danielcombs3207in fact, the bass lines in let it rain and why does love are memorable
Brilliant 👏🏻
What a group ....legends
It would be great to release this entire performance even it's only 3 or 4 songs.
Best ever....friggin insane...
This is a professional rock 'n' roll outfit.
Bobby's backing vocals on this song make it!
Don't forget Duane Allman on this album. In my opinion one of the best guitarist of all time!!!!!
Such a great singer Clapton
He ain't bad.
Thanks to Delaney Bramlett
The best x me
Holy smokes. I have never heard this version before. Back in olden days, we used to mail CD’s all around. There was a guy from Australia that I corresponded with and together we thought we had the complete recorded history. I did have a Johnny Cash disk, but this was not on it.
Thank you so much for posting!!!!!! Fabulous recording!
Lo effin L. Mailing cds in the "old days"
I'd forgotten about his wah wah pedal days!
Nicked one pedal off George..amongst other things..Doh..
I'm still trying to forget. Clapton is not my favorite wahwah guy, although White Room was really good...
@@jimparker7778 and Tales of brave Ulysses
Thanks for posting! I forgot about how good this version is!
Bobby Whitlock talks about the set they did that was not filmed on his channel recently, what a shame we don't have the visual.
Bobby Whitlock and Coco Carmel have a great channel where they talk about all sorts of things, including playing the Cash show (as you know). Anyone that hasn’t subscribed should. Great stories
@@thomasminarchickjr.7355 i watch those every day. Great stuff.
@@thomasminarchickjr.7355 - Ditto!!
I never miss a talk on the Whitlocks channel
Great feel to this song. Damn…
Those were the Days , my Friend ...
Awesome tune absolutely love this song
Who the F told the film crew to call it a day?? At least the audio guy had the presence of mind to keep rolling as they played a few more for the youngsters in the audience.
Holy Hannah is this amazing...like outfunkifiying anything from the Band...tight as ducks caboose.
Too bad! Thanks for this.
I've never missed a single Clapton Show going back to the late 70s anytime he's been anywhere near the NY City area. When people ask me why.... I've never failed to provide them with a reason 👆 How do you NOT LOVE CLAPTON ? Never fails to leave jaws on the floor, even 55 years later
Probably sat next to you at some point!
@@joed9414 When was the last time you saw him ?
How many times have you seen him? Lucky you. Living in Northwest Spain, I could only once (1995 from the cradle tour
@@joed9414 That could be a good possibility man !
@@pabloperez4063 Dozens upon dozens of times. I just can't help myself. I always buy tix for multiple nites when he's coming thru. I used to do the same thing when the Allman Brothers would play their Spring Residency at the Beacon Theater. I'd buy tickets for at least 10 shows. 2009 was incredible as it was their 40th Anniversary Tour.
I usually try to get seats close to the front left cause that's where Greg always is. I got lucky and scored a single, front row dead center seat. Everyone knew it was gonna be a special Tour cause of the Anniversary, and sure enough, a good ways into the show, Warren Haynes just kinda casually says "Would y'all please welcome Mr Eric Clapton to the Stage"...and Eric strolls out and The roof almost came off the building. Beyond phenomenal. I've been really fortunate, living so close to NY City, to have seen some really incredible shows since the late 70s. There's always a few that really stand out. That was one of them. 😁
One of the greatest band ever
Got to get better in a little while, good words for today. This version has a little more zip than the live Fillmore track.
Wish there was a video footage of this. The band sounds really amazing
Me too, this is mildly disappointing. They recorded the other song…..
There must be.
@@pabloperez4063 As far as I am aware , there is no video footage. Would love to be proven wrong. - also very little video footage of delaney, Bonnie & friends. (the forrunner of D&TD)
They were!
@@allanbriggs807 if some songs were recorded that program... Why should they stop the camera for this number?
Bobby and the Dominos !!!
Simply no words. Just hearing
Bad ass version, playing to a country audience nonetheless ... kicking ass and taking names! Best 4 piece band ever?
Actuallly they emptied the Ryman of the country audience after most of the taping and let the rock crowd in for D&D.
Derek and the Dominos was the best band that Clapton played with
In the running... but there was The Beatles.
@@scottmcgrew6937 The best band he was ever in.

Those 2 bar fills are so good. And he always adds just the right thing to keep a section moving along.
I'm almost 53 and I believe old music is way better than the new
For sure
Well appreciate this gem in 2020. bless you❤ happy new yeqr.
They also did Blues Power. Separate audience was brought in for this portion of the Cash Show.
Ain't no need to be a wall flower.
Now I'm livin' on BLUES POWER!
Blues power sounds even better. It can be found in Yt
Lots of Band, vibe to this song, I know Clapton was a big fan.
Oh definitely in this era for EC. His 68 to 76 was almost completely immersed in this sound besides his love for the Tulsa sound.
And Dylan spirit is noticia let in his 76 studio album
Show me a better band. Ever. It’s unbelievable.
hopefully the video will surface one of these days.
I dream with this
I hearbai many little Duane inspired things in Eric's DD luve stuff. WONDERFUL. Thanks EC!!!
Theres no Duane at all in this song...
Bobby got a you tube discussion, some great guitar work.Live too
He's got some great stories and insights!
Originally aired on January 6, 1971.
Wow! Love, love!
Best band ever!!!!
Absolutely 👍
Best rhythm section ever
Alongside CREAM and BLIND FAITH
No Mike that was The Beatles.
@@jasonkeith9317 yes them too! :-)
Top 5.
The only song performed on the Johnny Cash Show by the Dominos was It's Too Late. This recording was from the BBC's Top Of The Pops, recorded in NY City.
And to add to that...who really thinks these kids today are still gonna be listening to the crap they call music 50 years from now ? ✌
Listen to Jim Gordon's drum work!
He's one of the best.
He killed his mother in 1983 ! He is still in mental hospital ! Sad 😔

Sounds like the Speed that Mr Cash handed out before the show has kicked in!! NICE! 😋
From what I remember they had a picnic table behind the curtain and it was lined with blow from one end to the other.
They could--and probably did in concert--jam for about 20 minutes more on this song. I used to see Jim Gordon where I worked in California. Sadly, he was a shadow of his former self. Not many of the medical staff knew who he was, or that he had won a Grammy. I soon enough educated them on that.
did you ever chat with him?
Steve F Never had a real chance. He did request a book about rock musicians once from his social worker. Probably wanted to show who he had performed with.
Was he in a nursing home? It’s sad if he is, because he was such a good musician.
@@jonathanhandsmusic Prison. He killed his mother.
Der beste Eric ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guess something is wrong with me, but I hardly recognize Clapton. The long hair, clean shaven, and no glasses. Not to mention, young.
Marauw! CAT was not yet living but he is enjoying it.
Jim Gordan is just as inspiring as Steve Gadd.
Then there is the hammer of the gods ginger baker!
He wasi n the Studio's playin Hits before the gadd..
very rare . this song had been recorded for a second Derek album that never got off the ground . the public didnt hear the studio track for many years .
It was played at just about every D&D show from 10/1970 on.
I dont understand why D & D were not videod at the Fillmore East shows?? Someone missed the boat big time on that!!!
They weren't together long enough, they only toured once, if I'm not mistaken. I was lucky enough to see them in Chicago, November 1970.
-@@marywarren4206- What venue?
Me likey!!!😁
Wonder if this is the original mix or if there is a better one out there... vocals in the background and not even close to being out front.
but why is there only one video of Derek and the dominos? yet at the time there were so many bands and artists who were filmed, why not D&TD?
Great version...Quinn Sullivan does a great version of this, also...
Actually, they performed some countryish numbers for the TV show. Then the audience changed out for the Dominos rock'n'roll show.
Today, the acts come to the Ryman in Nashville and turn it up to "12" such that no one can hear a damn thing.
I always wanted those sideburns in High School but no way Jose
Could not wear that album out. Lord knows I tried.
We lost Eric for a bit after this.
Too drinky! 😉
But we did eventually get him back though thank God.

Funky Shit... (me likes)
Best band Clapton ever had, not even close. And he threw it all away to do heroin for a couple years as a hermit. Nothing he's done since has ever been this good. Fucking shame. If this is the Johnny Cash show its the short concert after the show, after the country audience left and the kids circling the block were let in. It was not video taped. Ryman Theater, Nashville.
You speak the truth. When he came back after his drug induced "exile", he was not the same artist, he had lost the "fire" that had made him great. Sure, he had chart and "monetary" successes after that, but IMO that "magic" was long gone. When he did return, the only person I believe that continued to play with him was the bassist, Carl Radle, the rest of guys, Gordon and Whitlock did not return. Don't know if it would have lasted much longer, anyway, Clapton isn't the kind of personality that is going to just "blend" into a "band" forever, I think his ego needed to be out front. He's always struck me as a bit pompous and a loner, don't think he could have sustained even a "sideband" in the likes of Tom Petty or Bruce Springsteen.
Uh, the best band was Cream. Live Dominos not even close. Sound like a pot-addled hippie band.
90's Clapton was his best era imo absolutely on fire during that decade!!
@@OroborusFMA You are comparing apples and oranges. Two completely different types of bands. D&TD were an excellent band all round. I'm not into "best" as that is so subjective. IMHO Delaney Bonnie & Friends (DB&F) was a superior band to Derek & the Dominoes - but that's just my opinion. DB&F had a brilliant horn section and the Bramletts as vocalists.
Too bad Clapton thought he was a singer rather than a guitar player. He left his best stuff behind him after this album.
He's both and a pretty damn good songwriter to boot.
He is the 3 things----guitarist, songwriter and singing. And lately, a good book writer with his autobiography, which is highly recommended
Maybe or maybe not.
This is crap.
